Leo Venus and Libra Venus Compatibility: Venus at Home One Sextile From the Sun’s House

Leo Venus and Libra Venus compatibility joins a Venus in the Sun’s house with a Venus in her own. The two signs sit two apart, a friendly angle called a sextile. That angle is no accident. Ptolemy gave Libra to Venus because it forms a sextile with Leo, the Sun’s house. So this couple repeats the very link that made Libra her home.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about both signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

A guest of the Sun and a Venus at home

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.

Partner Rank of Venus Ruler of the sign.
Leo Venus No major rank. The Sun.
Libra Venus Home, or domicile. Venus herself.

Leo gives Venus no home, no exaltation and no weak place. She is a guest in the house of the Sun. Libra is one of her two homes, with Taurus. So one partner holds Venus as a visitor, and the other holds her as the owner of the house.

A Leo Venus loves out loud, with warmth, loyalty and a taste for the grand gesture. Our page on Venus in Leo covers that placement in full. A Libra Venus loves through balance, grace and fair terms. Our page on Venus in Libra explains why the old books call it her home.

Why Ptolemy gave Venus the sign a sextile from Leo

Ptolemy explains the homes in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, chapter 17. He starts with the two lights. Leo goes to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon, as the most northern and warmest signs. The other planets then take the signs on either side, in order of their distance.

Venus gets Libra and Taurus. These signs, he wrote, “preserve the harmony of the sextile aspect.” Libra is a sextile from Leo, the Sun’s house. Taurus is a sextile from Cancer, the Moon’s house. He adds a second reason. Venus “at most is never more than two signs removed from the sun in either direction.”

So the angle in this couple is not random. It is the very sextile Ptolemy used to place Venus in Libra. A Libra Venus sits two signs past the Sun’s own house. Our page on Leo and Libra compatibility by Sun sign builds its whole case on this link. Here it is only the starting point.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Leo 8.46 percent Fourth of twelve.
Venus in Libra 8.32 percent Sixth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Leo and the other Venus in Libra? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.41 percent, or about one couple in 71. That ranks 21st of the 78 Venus pairs, and fifth of the twelve sextile pairs.

Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Leo Venus people Note.
Gemini 8.37 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Cancer 29.84 percent The largest group.
Leo 23.88 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Virgo 29.16 percent Venus one sign behind.
Libra 8.76 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Libra Venus people Note.
Leo 8.99 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Virgo 30.08 percent The largest group.
Libra 23.52 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Scorpio 28.37 percent Venus one sign behind.
Sagittarius 9.05 percent Venus two signs behind.

One couple in eight shares a Sun sign

Three Sun signs show up in both lists: Leo, Virgo and Libra. Every Venus pair two signs apart shares three Sun signs. Pairs one sign apart share four, and pairs farther apart share two or fewer. We multiplied the matching shares and added them up.

Shared Sun sign Share of these couples Reading.
Both Virgo 8.77 percent About one couple in eleven.
Both Leo 2.15 percent About one couple in 47.
Both Libra 2.06 percent About one couple in 49.
Any shared Sun 12.98 percent About one couple in eight.

The surprise is Virgo. Neither partner has Venus in Virgo, yet two Virgo Suns are the most likely match. Virgo sits between Leo and Libra. A Virgo Sun can carry Venus one sign ahead, in Libra, or one sign behind, in Leo. Two Leo Suns or two Libra Suns are far rarer. For a Leo Sun, Venus in Libra is two signs ahead, near the edge of her range.

The likeliest couple is a Leo and a Virgo

Now combine two partners in full. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Leo with a Virgo counts once, whoever holds which Venus.

Sun pair Share of these couples Rank.
Leo and Virgo 9.80 percent First, about one couple in ten.
Virgo and Libra 9.49 percent Second.
Cancer and Virgo 8.98 percent Third.
Virgo and Virgo 8.77 percent Fourth.
Cancer and Scorpio 8.47 percent Fifth.

Virgo shows up in four of the top five. Even so, the top pair covers only one couple in ten. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.

How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Sextile 25.2 percent Two signs apart, like the Venuses.
Semi-sextile 24.5 percent Next-door signs.
Square 19.0 percent A tense right angle.
Same sign 13.0 percent The shared Suns above.
Trine 12.6 percent Four signs apart.
Quincunx 5.1 percent Five signs apart, with no classical aspect.
Opposition 0.8 percent Suns face to face.

Only one couple in four repeats the sextile in the Suns. For the rest, the Venus bond sits under a different Sun story. Read both layers.

Leo and Libra by Sun sign: not the same couple

Many readers land here because they are a Leo Sun and a Libra Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? In most cases, no. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign at 23.62 percent of birth moments. So a Leo Sun has Venus in Leo only about one time in four. The same holds for a Libra Sun and Venus in Libra.

Turn it around. In 41.78 percent of Leo Venus and Libra Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 28th of the 78 pairs. In 5.61 percent of couples, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can settle it.

No other tie in Ptolemy, under either reading

Ptolemy names ties beyond the aspects. In chapter 14, signs can “command” and “obey.” They sit at an equal distance from an equinox sign, Aries or Libra, and rise over the horizon in equal time. In chapter 15, signs “behold” each other. They sit at an equal distance from a solstice sign, Cancer or Capricorn, and share the same length of day.

His text can be read two ways. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists whole-sign pairs in his notes 80 and 83. By whole signs, Leo commands Sagittarius and beholds Gemini. Robbins notes that Aries and Libra “are left out of the scheme,” since the count starts from them. Libra beholds Aries.

The second reading uses exact degrees. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), used mirror points. An antiscion mirrors a degree across the solstice axis. A contra-antiscion mirrors it across the equinox axis. On this reading, Leo mirrors Taurus and Scorpio. Libra mirrors Pisces and Virgo. We counted Leo and Libra Venuses on mirror points: none by the solstice axis, and under half a percent by the equinox axis, even with a 3-degree margin.

So neither reading adds a tie. The sextile carries the bond alone. Ptolemy calls it harmonious in chapter 13, because both signs are of one kind. Leo and Libra are both masculine, the old term for fire and air signs.

The sextile in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses two signs apart can sit anywhere from 31 to 89 degrees apart. The exact sextile is 60 degrees. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with a true sextile Reading.
3 degrees 19.00 percent About one in five.
6 degrees 35.98 percent About one in three.
8 degrees 46.18 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.50 percent Just over half.

These values are near the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. With an 8-degree orb, 3.55 percent of these couples form a square in degrees instead. Picture Venus at 0 degrees Leo and 29 degrees Libra. The gap is 89 degrees. By sign, that is a sextile. In the sky, it is a square.

How the tradition reads this couple

Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this pair.

  • Common ground. Both love in company. Fire and air feed each other, and both signs like to be seen at their best.
  • Show and balance. The Leo Venus wants to be adored in public. The Libra Venus wants things to feel fair and pleasant.
  • Pace. Leo is fixed, a sign in the middle of a season, and holds its course. Libra is cardinal, a sign that opens a season, and starts new plans.
  • The soft spot. Leo can take a mild word as a slight. Libra can smooth over a real problem to keep the peace.

One simple habit helps. Once a week, each partner names one thing the other did well, out loud and in detail. Then each names one thing that still feels unfair. The Leo partner gets the praise that warms them. The Libra partner gets the fair hearing they need.

The tradition sees the Sun as a king and Venus as a gracious host. Read that way, the Leo Venus brings the stage, and the Libra Venus brings the manners. The sextile gives them a shared tongue. It does not settle who leads.

The same signs, through other planets and pairs

The Moon shows emotional needs, a separate layer from Venus. Our page on Leo Moon and Libra Moon compatibility reads the two signs through that layer. The other sextile from Leo lands in Gemini, traced in Gemini Venus and Leo Venus compatibility. One sign back from Libra, Venus sits in her fall, as Virgo Venus and Libra Venus compatibility shows. For all 78 pairs at a glance, see our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

What the data says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test on that scale exists for Venus signs.

So a sextile is not a promise, and a Venus at home is not a prize. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each entry of Venus and the Sun into a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the times. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It logged the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid shifted half an hour from the first. That makes more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree to within 0.01 of a point.

The pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 18.

Frequently asked questions

Are Leo Venus and Libra Venus compatible?

They form a sextile, which Ptolemy called harmonious. Venus is at home in Libra and has no major rank in Leo. With an 8-degree orb, 46.18 percent of these couples have a true sextile. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

How common is a Leo Venus and Libra Venus couple?

About one couple in 71, or 1.41 percent, over the years 1600 to 2400. That ranks 21st of the 78 Venus pairs and fifth of the twelve sextile pairs.

Can a Leo Venus and a Libra Venus share a Sun sign?

Yes, in about one couple in eight. Both partners can be Leo, Virgo or Libra Suns. Two Virgo Suns is the likeliest match, at 8.77 percent of these couples.

Why is Venus at home in Libra?

Ptolemy gave Venus Libra and Taurus because they form a sextile with the houses of the Sun and Moon. Libra is a sextile from Leo. Venus also never strays more than two signs from the Sun.

Does Leo command Libra in Ptolemy?

No. By whole signs, Leo commands Sagittarius, and Libra is left out of the scheme. By exact degrees, Leo mirrors Scorpio and Libra mirrors Virgo. Neither reading ties Leo to Libra.
