Virgo Venus and Libra Venus Compatibility: Venus Falls One Sign Before Her Home

Virgo Venus and Libra Venus compatibility joins two next-door signs with the widest gap in rank. In Virgo, Venus sits in her fall, her lowest seat. One sign later, in Libra, she is at home. The line between them is the autumn equinox, the point where the Sun crosses into the southern half of the sky.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about both signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Venus falls one sign before her home

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.

Partner Rank of Venus Ruler of the sign.
Virgo Venus Fall, her lowest seat. Mercury, who is exalted there too.
Libra Venus Home, or domicile. Venus herself.

Ptolemy explains both ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. In chapter 17 he hands out the homes. Venus gets Libra and Taurus, two signs he calls “extremely fertile.” They sit two signs from the homes of the Sun and Moon. That fits a planet that, in his words, “is never more than two signs removed from the sun.”

Chapter 19 gives the fall. Venus is moist by nature, Ptolemy wrote, so her power grows in Pisces, “where the beginning of the moist spring is indicated.” Virgo sits across the wheel and stands for the dry autumn. So Venus sinks there. Mercury, who is drier, is exalted in Virgo instead.

So one partner holds Venus as a guest in Mercury’s house. The other holds Venus in her own. Only two of the 78 Venus pairs set Venus at home beside Venus in fall. The other is Taurus and Virgo. Only here do the two signs touch.

A Virgo Venus loves through care and useful acts. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains why a fall is not the same as a detriment. A Libra Venus loves through balance, beauty and fair terms. Our page on Venus in Libra covers that placement in full. A weak rank is a label from old books. It is not a flaw in a person.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Virgo 8.41 percent Fifth of twelve.
Venus in Libra 8.32 percent Sixth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Virgo and the other Venus in Libra? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.40 percent, or about one couple in 71. That ranks 27th of the 78 Venus pairs, and sixth of the twelve next-door pairs.

Averse by sign: Ptolemy’s reading of neighbors

Virgo and Libra sit side by side, 30 degrees apart. Modern astrologers call that a semi-sextile. Ptolemy did not count it as an aspect. In chapter 13 he lists only four: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile.

Chapter 16 goes further. Signs one apart, he wrote, “are as it were averted from one another.” Averted means turned away, like two people standing back to back. He calls such signs “disjunct,” or alien. But he adds a condition. Signs are disjunct only if they share none of the ties he lists in chapters 14 and 15. So the question is whether Virgo and Libra have one of those ties.

Mirrored by degree: two readings of chapter 14

Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” Ptolemy defines them as parts of the zodiac “at an equal distance from the same equinoctial sign.” Such parts rise over the horizon in equal time. The part on the summer side commands. Here his text can be read in two ways.

The first reading uses whole signs. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his note 80. Virgo commands Scorpio. Libra and Aries “are left out of the scheme,” since they are the signs the count starts from. On that reading, Virgo and Libra have no tie at all. They are averted and disjunct.

The second reading uses exact degrees. The equinox point sits at 0 degrees Libra. Each degree of Virgo mirrors one degree of Libra across it: 20 degrees Virgo mirrors 10 degrees Libra, and so on. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), called such mirror points contra-antiscia. On this reading, the Virgo Venus commands, because Virgo lies on the summer side. The Libra Venus obeys.

We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points.

Margin around the mirror point Share of couples Reading.
1 degree 6.55 percent About one couple in 15.
3 degrees 18.99 percent About one couple in five.

So the answer depends on the reading. By whole signs, the two Venuses turn their backs. By degrees, about one couple in five has a real bond, and it runs through the equinox. The same split shows up across the spring point, in Aries Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility.

Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Virgo Venus people Note.
Cancer 8.65 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Leo 29.85 percent The largest group.
Virgo 23.66 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Libra 28.93 percent Venus one sign behind.
Scorpio 8.91 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Libra Venus people Note.
Leo 8.99 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Virgo 30.08 percent The largest group.
Libra 23.52 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Scorpio 28.37 percent Venus one sign behind.
Sagittarius 9.05 percent Venus two signs behind.

Four Sun signs show up in both lists: Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. So these partners share a Sun sign in 19.13 percent of couples, about one in five.

The likeliest Suns are Virgo and Libra too

Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Virgo with a Libra counts once.

Sun pair Share of these couples Rank.
Virgo and Libra 14.27 percent First, about one couple in seven.
Leo and Virgo 11.11 percent Second.
Libra and Scorpio 10.30 percent Third.
Leo and Libra 9.62 percent Fourth.
Virgo and Scorpio 9.39 percent Fifth.

The most likely Sun pair is the same as the Venus pair: a Virgo Sun and a Libra Sun. Even so, it covers only one couple in seven. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.

How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Semi-sextile 37.3 percent Next-door signs, like the Venuses.
Sextile 24.2 percent A friendly link, two signs apart.
Same sign 19.1 percent Both Suns in one sign.
Square 13.5 percent A tense right angle.
Trine 5.2 percent Suns in easy step.
Quincunx 0.8 percent Only a Cancer Sun with a Sagittarius Sun.

The two Suns never face each other. In most couples they sit close, as the two Venuses do.

Virgo and Libra by Sun sign: not the same couple

Many readers land here because they are a Virgo Sun and a Libra Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not always. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments, across all signs. So a Virgo Sun and a Libra Sun with Venus in their own signs fit roughly one couple in 18. Venus can cross over, too: a Virgo Sun can hold Venus in Libra, and a Libra Sun can hold Venus in Virgo. Our page on Virgo and Libra compatibility by Sun sign counts that crossing.

Turn it around. In 41.61 percent of Virgo Venus and Libra Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 40th of the 78 pairs. In 5.56 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

The semi-sextile in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses in next-door signs can be anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The exact semi-sextile is 30. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. At an 8 degree orb, 46.15 percent of these couples come that close. That value is almost the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple.

The edges tell more. At the same orb, 7.18 percent of these couples form a different aspect by degree. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Virgo and at 1 degree Libra. The gap is 2 degrees, a conjunction across the border. Now picture 2 degrees Virgo and 29 degrees Libra. The gap is 57 degrees, close to a sextile. By sign, both couples are neighbors. In the sky, they form a real aspect.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Shared ground. Both care about how things are done. Manners, taste and a tidy plan all count.
  • Method and grace. The Virgo Venus wants the thing to work. The Libra Venus wants it to look and feel fair.
  • Pace. Virgo is mutable and adjusts fast. Libra is cardinal and starts things, then weighs every side.
  • The sore spot. Critique from the Virgo side can feel like a breach of peace. Politeness from the Libra side can hide a no.

A simple habit helps. Let the Virgo partner name one fix a week, and only one. Let the Libra partner answer with a plain yes or no, not a soft reply. Each then gets to love in their own way.

Ptolemy made Libra the exaltation of Saturn, the planet of limits, and the fall of the Sun. So the Libra Venus lives in a sign that values measure and fair terms. The Virgo Venus lives under Mercury, who counts and sorts. Read that way, both partners love by keeping things in order. They differ on whether order means working or looking right.

The same signs through other planets and pairs

The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Virgo Moon and Libra Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. A Virgo Venus meets its own sign in Virgo Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility. A Libra Venus meets her other home in Taurus Venus and Libra Venus compatibility.

Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So a home is not a promise, and a fall is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venus in Virgo and Venus in Libra compatible?

They are next-door signs, 30 degrees apart, an angle Ptolemy did not count. Venus is in her fall in Virgo and at home in Libra. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Virgo Venus and Libra Venus couple?

About one couple in 71, or 1.40 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 27th of the 78 Venus pairs.

Do Virgo and Libra command and obey each other?

By whole signs, no: Robbins leaves Libra out of that scheme in his note 80. By exact degrees, yes: Virgo commands and Libra obeys, and 18.99 percent of couples have Venuses on mirror points within 3 degrees.

What Sun signs are likeliest for this couple?

A Virgo Sun and a Libra Sun, in 14.27 percent of these couples. The partners share one Sun sign in 19.13 percent.

Why is Venus at home in Libra but in fall in Virgo?

Ptolemy gave Venus Libra and Taurus as fertile signs two away from the homes of the Sun and Moon. He put her fall in dry Virgo, across from moist Pisces, her exaltation.
