Your birth date tells you that the Sun was in Leo. It does not tell you where that Sun sits in your chart. That second fact comes from the hour, and the gap between the two is bigger than most people think.
I measured it. Take a Leo born on a known day in a known city, but with no birth time. Guess the house of the Sun with the best odds you can find. You will be right about one time in ten. With the hour, the same guess lands on one of two houses almost every time.
This page is about the Sun as a placement: the part of the chart it lights up, and how the clock decides that. The sign itself has its own page. Our guide to the Leo sign covers the traits, the dates and why the ruler of Leo is always at home.
Sign and house: two answers from two clocks
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. It has two layers. The sign is the stretch of sky a planet stands in. The house is the part of life that planet is said to run, like work, love or home.
The sign comes from the calendar. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so the date is enough to place it in Leo. The house comes from the turning of the Earth. The whole sky wheels past the horizon once a day, so the house of the Sun changes every two hours or so.
Think of a lamp in a house with twelve rooms. The date tells you the lamp is lit and what color it is. The hour tells you which room it is in. A bright lamp in the kitchen and the same lamp in the attic light up very different things.
This page uses whole sign houses. In that system, the sign on the eastern horizon at birth fills the whole first house. The next sign fills the second house, and so on round the circle. It is the oldest house system on record, used by Vettius Valens in his Anthologies in the second century. Our guide to the whole sign house system explains how it works.
Whole sign houses make one thing very plain. The house of a Leo Sun is just the rising sign read from a different angle. If Leo is rising, the Sun is in the first house. If Virgo is rising, Leo is the twelfth sign from it, so the Sun is in the twelfth house.
How long the Sun stays in Leo
The Sun spends a little over 31 days in Leo each year. I timed every stay from 1600 to 2400, which is 801 of them. The mean is 31.29 days. The shortest was 31.23 days and the longest was 31.35 days.
That is a spread of under three hours across eight centuries. The stay barely moves because the Earth’s orbit barely changes. What moves is the start date, because our calendar year is not a whole number of days long. The Leo sign page lists the start and end dates in detail.
Here are the next two stays, in US Eastern time.
| Year of the stay | Sun enters Leo | Sun leaves Leo. |
|---|---|---|
| Year 2026 | July 22 at 3:13 pm | August 22 at 10:19 pm. |
| Year 2027 | July 22 at 9:04 pm | August 23 at 4:14 am. |
If you were born on one of those edge days, only the exact minute settles your sign. Everyone else can be sure of the sign from the date alone. The house is a different story.
One birthday, twelve houses
Here is a real case. Take a baby born in New York on August 5, 2026. The Sun sits at about 13 degrees of Leo all day. Now watch its house change with the clock. These are the times the Sun moves into each new house, in local summer time.
| Clock time in New York | Rising sign at that time | House of the Leo Sun from then on. |
|---|---|---|
| From 12:39 am | Gemini rising | Third house. |
| From 2:34 am | Cancer rising | Second house. |
| From 4:56 am | Leo rising | First house. |
| From 7:29 am | Virgo rising | Twelfth house. |
| From 10:00 am | Libra rising | Eleventh house. |
| From 12:31 pm | Scorpio rising | Tenth house. |
| From 3:04 pm | Sagittarius rising | Ninth house. |
| From 5:26 pm | Capricorn rising | Eighth house. |
| From 7:21 pm | Aquarius rising | Seventh house. |
| From 8:47 pm | Pisces rising | Sixth house. |
| From 9:58 pm | Aries rising | Fifth house. |
| From 11:09 pm | Taurus rising | Fourth house. |
Before dawn the Sun sits below the eastern horizon, and it climbs up through the second and first houses. Around sunrise it crosses into the twelfth house, the one just above the horizon.
Look at the spread. The same birthday puts the Sun in every one of the twelve houses. Some houses hold it for a long time. The first and tenth each last about 2 hours and 33 minutes. The fifth and sixth each last only about 1 hour and 11 minutes.
That is the whole point in one table. A date of birth with no hour tells you nothing firm about the house.
Which house holds the most Leo Suns
One city on one day is a start. For the wide view, I built a grid of births across the world. It covers every Sun in Leo stay from 1900 to 2100, one birth every 15 minutes, in 4,454 cities of 100,000 people or more. Each city counts in line with its size.
| House of the Leo Sun | Rising sign that puts it there | Share of Leo Sun births. |
|---|---|---|
| First house | Leo rising | 9.7 percent. |
| Tenth house | Scorpio rising | 9.7 percent. |
| Second house | Cancer rising | 9.5 percent. |
| Ninth house | Sagittarius rising | 9.5 percent. |
| Eleventh house | Libra rising | 9.4 percent. |
| Twelfth house | Virgo rising | 9.4 percent. |
| Third house | Gemini rising | 8.4 percent. |
| Eighth house | Capricorn rising | 8.4 percent. |
| Fourth house | Taurus rising | 6.9 percent. |
| Seventh house | Aquarius rising | 6.9 percent. |
| Fifth house | Aries rising | 6.1 percent. |
| Sixth house | Pisces rising | 6.1 percent. |
The first house comes out on top, tied with the tenth. But the lead is thin. The best house holds under one Leo Sun in ten, and the worst still holds six in a hundred.
The figure for the first house matches the share of Leo rising among Leo Suns on our Leo sign page. That page found it by a different method, with its own sample, and the two land close together.
Why the houses come in pairs
The table pairs up. First and tenth tie, second and ninth tie, and so on. The reason is the rising sign. Some signs cross the horizon slowly and some cross it fast. The slow ones stay up longer, so more births catch them.
North of the equator, the slow signs run from Cancer to Sagittarius. Leo and Scorpio take the same time to rise, and so do Cancer and Sagittarius. Those slow signs put a Leo Sun in the houses near the top of the table. The fast ones, Aries and Pisces, put it in the fifth and sixth houses. Our guide to the rising sign covers what it means once you have it.
Leo and Scorpio share that slow rising time, one of the old ties traced in our guide to Leo and Scorpio compatibility.
Latitude stretches the gap
The farther you are from the equator, the wider the gap. Here is the same count split by where the birth took place.
| Where the births took place | Most common house of the Leo Sun | Least common house. |
|---|---|---|
| Equator to 20 degrees north | Second and ninth, 9.2 percent each | Fifth and sixth, 7.1 percent each. |
| From 20 to 35 degrees north | Tenth and first, 9.8 percent each | Fifth and sixth, 6.0 percent each. |
| From 35 to 45 degrees north | First and tenth, 10.5 percent each | Fifth and sixth, 5.1 percent each. |
| North of 45 degrees | First, tenth, eleventh and twelfth, 12.0 percent each | Fifth and sixth, 3.5 percent each. |
| South of the equator | Third and eighth, 9.3 percent each | Eleventh and twelfth, 6.6 percent each. |
North of 45 degrees, which takes in London and Seattle, a Leo Sun is more than three times as likely to fall in the first house as in the fifth. South of the equator the pattern flips. There the slow signs run the other way, so the lower houses win.
The hour decides
Now add the birth time. The chaos turns into order. Here is the most likely house for each two hour slice of the day, by local clock time.
| Local clock time of birth | Most likely house | Next most likely house. |
|---|---|---|
| Midnight to 2 am | Third house, 58 percent | Fourth house, 31 percent. |
| From 2 am to 4 am | Second house, 62 percent | Third house, 32 percent. |
| From 4 am to 6 am | First house, 57 percent | Second house, 40 percent. |
| From 6 am to 8 am | First house, 51 percent | Twelfth house, 46 percent. |
| From 8 am to 10 am | Twelfth house, 60 percent | Eleventh house, 37 percent. |
| From 10 am to noon | Eleventh house, 64 percent | Tenth house, 30 percent. |
| Noon to 2 pm | Tenth house, 64 percent | Ninth house, 24 percent. |
| From 2 pm to 4 pm | Ninth house, 60 percent | Tenth house, 20 percent. |
| From 4 pm to 6 pm | Eighth house, 54 percent | Ninth house, 27 percent. |
| From 6 pm to 8 pm | Seventh house, 51 percent | Eighth house, 24 percent. |
| From 8 pm to 10 pm | Sixth house, 46 percent | Fifth house, 34 percent. |
| From 10 pm to midnight | Fourth house, 48 percent | Fifth house, 38 percent. |
Read it as a clock face. At dawn the Sun is near the eastern horizon, in the first or twelfth house. At noon it is high overhead, in the tenth. At dusk it sinks toward the seventh. At midnight it sits under your feet, near the fourth.
Known to the hour, the house narrows to two choices in at least 79 percent of cases. Known to the minute, it is exact. Known only to the day, the best guess is right 10.1 percent of the time.
Summer time muddies the clock a little. In much of the world, clocks in July and August run an hour ahead of the Sun. That is why the tenth house peaks just after noon on the clock, not before.
Day chart or night chart
The hour settles one more thing that the old writers cared about. Hellenistic astrologers split every chart into day and night. A day chart has the Sun above the horizon at birth. A night chart has it below. They called this the sect of the chart.
The Sun leads the day team. So a Leo born by day has the Sun in its own sign and on its own side. A Leo born at night has the Sun in its own sign but out of power, with the Moon in charge of the chart.
In my world sample, 54.7 percent of Leo Sun births are day births. North of the equator the share is 56.0 percent, since days in July and August run long. Chris Brennan lays out the rules of sect in his book Hellenistic Astrology. Demetra George covers them in Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice.
What each part of the chart does with a Leo Sun
The sign sets the tone of the Sun. The house sets the stage. Ptolemy named Leo the house of the Sun in the Tetrabiblos, and William Lilly kept that rule in Christian Astrology. That is why the Sun is strong in Leo wherever it falls. The house then says where that strength goes.
Here is how the tradition reads the Sun in each group of houses. These are readings from the old texts and modern writers, not tested facts.
Houses one and ten: the two most common
In the first house, the Sun sits on the rising sign. Leo is then both your Sun and your rising sign. The self you show and the self you are line up. Our page on the Sun in the first house goes further.
In the tenth house, the Sun sits at the top of the chart. The tenth is the place of career and public name. Valens saw the top of the chart as the place of action. A Leo Sun there wants a role people can see. Our page on the Sun in the tenth house covers this in depth.
Houses eleven, twelve, nine and two
The eleventh house is friends and hopes. A Leo Sun there shines in a group. The twelfth house is the hidden place. A Leo Sun there works best out of sight, which feels odd for such a bright sign.
The ninth house is travel, belief and study. Brennan notes that the Greeks called it God, and that the Sun had its joy there. The second house is money and what you own. A Leo Sun there builds worth it can hold in its hands.
The lower and western houses
In the fourth house, the Sun sits at the base of the chart. Home and family become the stage. In the seventh, it faces you from across the chart. Partners and rivals carry the light. Stephen Arroyo reads the Sun as the core of vital force. In the seventh, that force is met through other people.
The fifth and sixth are the rarest homes for a Leo Sun. The fifth is play, love affairs and children, a natural fit for Leo. The sixth is daily work and health. Liz Greene reads the Sun as the hero’s path, and in the sixth that path runs through craft and care.
What else to read next to the Sun
The Sun never works alone. A few other bodies change how a Leo Sun comes out.
Some Leo Sun charts also carry Mars in Leo, a placement with its own rules.
Fewer than one in four people with Venus in Leo also carry a Leo Sun, even though Venus never strays far from it.
Around one chart in 141 pairs that Sun with a Moon in Leo, and the needs then run in the same direction as the will.
A Leo with Venus in Libra carries the ruler of the partner sign, a tie traced in our guide to Leo and Libra compatibility.
The sign before changes the delivery: Sun in Cancer runs the same identity through protective feeling.
Sun in Virgo gives the same planet precision and repair to work with, and the result reads nothing like this.
Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, makes the same point about the Sun in every sign. It shows the will, but the rest of the chart shows how the will gets its way.
How I measured it
Every figure on this page comes from my own runs. Here is the method, so anyone can check it.
For the Sun, I used the astronomy-engine library, a standard ephemeris. An ephemeris is a table of where each body sits at a given moment. I used the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. I found each entry into Leo, at 120 degrees, and each exit, at 150 degrees, by halving the time window until it was exact to the second.
For the houses, I first used a regular grid with no random draws. It took every eighth year from 1900 to 2100 and one moment every 15 minutes of each Leo stay. Each moment was tested in 4,454 cities with 100,000 people or more, weighted by size. The rising sign came from the standard formula using star time and the tilt of the Earth.
Then I checked it by a second route. I drew 3 million births at random with a secure random number source. The Sun’s sign came straight from its position, with no date table. The rising sign came from a different calculation that turns the sky into the local horizon. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points on every house.
I ran that second route again on the years 1626 to 2425. Every house stayed within 0.05 points of the first result. Last, I checked three New York charts against our own chart server. All three gave the same house.
Two limits are worth saying. City sizes stand in for where people are born, so rural births are left out. And I spread births evenly across the day, while real hospitals book more births in the morning. Neither changes the main result: without the hour, no house holds as many as one Leo in ten.
For one placement, we measured what those real hours do: Venus in the 9th house goes from one US birth in twelve to about one in ten.
Questions people ask about the Sun in Leo
Does the Sun in Leo mean the same thing in every chart?
No. The sign is the same, but the house changes the stage. A Leo Sun in the tenth house points at career. A Leo Sun in the fourth points at home. The house can only be read from the birth time.
Which house is the Sun in Leo most likely to be in?
The first and tenth houses, each with about 9.7 percent of Leo Sun births worldwide. The fifth and sixth are the least likely, at about 6.1 percent each. The gap grows the farther north you were born.
Can I find my Sun’s house without a birth time?
Not with any confidence. The Sun moves through all twelve houses on every birthday. Without the hour, the best guess is right about one time in ten.
How long does the Sun stay in Leo?
About 31.29 days on average. Across the years 1600 to 2400, the shortest stay was 31.23 days and the longest was 31.35 days.
Is a Leo Sun stronger in a day chart?
In the Hellenistic tradition, yes. The Sun leads the day side of the chart, so a Leo born with the Sun above the horizon has it in its own sign and its own sect. About 55 percent of Leo Sun births are day births.
