Astrology illustration for Sun in the 10th house

Sun in the 10th House: Two in Five Are Born After Clock Noon

If your Sun is in the 10th house, you were born in the last hours before the Sun reached its highest point. Under the house method most US apps use, that means about 10 a.m. to noon by the Sun. On a US clock, it can mean anything from 10 a.m. to past 1 p.m.

That gap between the Sun and the clock is the heart of this guide. We timed the Sun’s high point for sixteen US cities, and for every county. In much of the country it comes after 1 p.m. on a summer clock. So a baby born at 12:30 p.m. in July can still have the Sun climbing toward the top of the sky.

We also counted how common this placement is with the real hours of US births. It is more common than one in twelve, because hospitals are busy in the late morning. Every number here comes from our own count, and the method is at the end so you can check it.

The 10th house and the top of the sky

Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house covers one field of life.

The 10th house covers your work in the world: the name you make, your rank, the deeds people know you for. Our guide to 10th house astrology covers the house on its own, and why it does not always start where you think.

The Sun stands for the core of you: the self you grow into, and where you want to shine. The old books call the Sun the light of the day. Put it in the 10th house and that light sits near the top of your sky.

Now the sky part. The houses are fixed to the ground under your feet, not to the stars. The 1st house starts at the east edge of the sky, where the Sun comes up. The 12th and 11th houses fill the climb. The 10th house is the last stretch before the top.

The top itself has a name. The Midheaven, or MC, is the point of the zodiac that crosses the line due south of you, high in the sky. When the Sun crosses that line, it is noon by the Sun. Our guide to the Midheaven in your chart explains what that point means.

Two ways to draw the 10th house

There are two common ways to cut the sky. For the 10th house, they give two quite different answers.

Placidus houses cut the sky by time. The path of the Sun from sunrise to its high point is split into three equal parts of time. The last third is the 10th house. Most US sites and apps use this one. Here the Midheaven is always the start of the 10th house, by design.

Whole sign houses are the oldest way. The sign rising in the east at your birth is your whole 1st house. The next sign is your 2nd, and so on. The 10th house is simply the tenth sign from the rising one. The Greek writers used this and nothing else.

Here is the catch. In whole sign houses, the Midheaven does not have to sit in the 10th house. It can fall in the 9th or the 11th. We checked this for US births. The Midheaven lands in the whole sign 10th house in 60.7 percent of US charts. It sits in the 9th in 19.7 percent, and in the 11th in 19.6 percent.

That fits what we found before. Our guide to Saturn in the 10th house found the Midheaven outside the 10th in 43.8 percent of New York charts. The farther north you were born, the more the two part ways.

Jupiter shows the same split: our count of Jupiter in the 10th house found the two systems agree on fewer than half of its US charts.

So a Sun in the whole sign 10th house is not the same as a Sun near the top of the sky. We give both systems below, and we say which one each number uses.

What time of day puts the Sun in the 10th house

Start with Sun time. At noon by the Sun, the Sun stands highest in your sky. On the two equinox days, when day and night have the same length, the Sun rises at 6 a.m. by the Sun.

Split those six morning hours into thirds. The 12th house takes 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The 11th takes 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The 10th takes 10 a.m. to noon. So on those two days, the Placidus 10th house runs from 10 a.m. to noon by the Sun.

The rest of the year the window moves, but its end stays put. It always closes at noon by the Sun, the moment the Sun crosses the Midheaven. In June the days are long, so the window opens earlier, near 9:30 a.m. by the Sun. In December it opens near 10:30 a.m. by the Sun. The window lasts about two and a half hours in June and one and a half in December.

Noon by the Sun is rarely noon on the clock

Your birth record shows clock time. Clock noon and Sun noon drift apart for three reasons.

First, your time zone is wide. The whole zone shares one clock, but the Sun reaches its high point later the farther west you live. Second, daylight saving time moves the clock one hour ahead from March to November. Third, the Sun runs a little fast or slow across the year, by up to sixteen minutes.

We timed the Sun’s high point in local clock time for sixteen US cities. We used the Swiss Ephemeris, the engine behind many chart apps, and checked it against a second formula. The two agree within four seconds.

EST, CST, MST and PST are winter clock time. EDT, CDT, MDT and PDT are summer clock time. The dates are January 15 and July 26, 2026.

Then we did the same for every county, weighted by the number of people who live there, for every day of 2026. In the lower 48 states, the Sun’s high point falls between 11:16 a.m. and 2:08 p.m. on the clock. The earliest is in the far north of Maine, just after the clocks fall back in November. The latest is at the west end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in early March, once summer time starts.

Alaska runs later still. Anchorage reaches 2:10 p.m. in spring. The far west of Alaska passes 3 p.m.

Across the whole year and the whole US population, the Sun’s high point comes after 1 p.m. on 42.6 percent of days. It comes after 12:30 p.m. on 72.2 percent. In July alone, 77 percent of Americans see the Sun peak after 1 p.m. Clock noon is almost never Sun noon.

The 10th house window on the clock

From March to November, the window closes near 1 p.m. on the clock in all three cities. In winter it closes just before noon. The March and November rows look odd next to each other. That is summer time at work, not the sky.

Since 2007, other years move these times by a minute or two. Before 2007, summer time ran from April to late October. For older birth years, check the clock rule for your year.

The odds at each clock hour

We then asked a plain question. Of all US babies born in a given clock hour, how many have the Sun in the Placidus 10th house? We used every third day from 1940 to 2030, with a check every two minutes, across every county.

Clock hour of birthShare with the Sun in the 10th house.
Before 9 a.m.None.
9 a.m. to 10 a.m.1.0 percent of births.
10 a.m. to 11 a.m.33.2 percent of births.
11 a.m. to noon90.3 percent of births.
Noon to 1 p.m.63.4 percent of births.
1 p.m. to 2 p.m.12.6 percent of births.
2 p.m. or laterAlmost none.

So a US baby born between 11 a.m. and noon on the clock has the Sun in the 10th house nine times in ten. The noon hour still gives it more than six times in ten. Even the 1 p.m. hour gives it about one time in eight, mostly in summer and in the west of each time zone.

Turn the question around and the clock gap shows up plainly. Of all US babies with the Sun in the Placidus 10th house, 40.7 percent were born at 12:00 p.m. or later on the clock. Two in five were born after clock noon, yet before the Sun’s own noon.

Mercury in the 10th house shows the same clock gap: 45 percent of US births with it come at noon or later on the clock.

Whole sign houses: a window that drifts past noon

In whole sign houses, the Sun is in the 10th house while a set sign is rising. For a Sun in Aries, that is Cancer. For a Sun in Libra, it is Capricorn. The Sun’s height in the sky plays no direct part.

So the whole sign window drifts across the year. Here it is for New York, with the Placidus window beside it. Each date sits near the middle of a Sun sign.

Date in 2026Placidus 10th houseWhole sign 10th house.
January 5, Capricorn Sun10:30 a.m. to 12:02 p.m. EST10:55 a.m. to 12:07 p.m. EST.
March 5, Pisces Sun10:15 a.m. to 12:08 p.m. EST9:41 to 11:35 a.m. EST.
April 5, Aries Sun10:52 a.m. to 12:59 p.m. EDT10:33 a.m. to 12:56 p.m. EDT.
June 6, Gemini Sun10:27 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. EDT11:24 a.m. to 1:56 p.m. EDT.

October 8, Libra Sun10:51 a.m. to 12:44 p.m. EDT1:15 to 3:09 p.m. EDT.
November 7, Scorpio Sun10:00 to 11:40 a.m. EST12:11 to 1:37 p.m. EST.

Look at October. The Placidus window ends at 12:44 p.m. The whole sign window only starts at 1:15 p.m. The two do not touch. A Libra Sun in the whole sign 10th house has already passed its high point. By Sun time it sits between about 12:30 and 2:30 in the afternoon.

In early March it runs the other way. The whole sign window opens half an hour before the Placidus one and closes earlier too.

When the two systems agree

We counted the births with the Sun in both 10th houses at once. The answer is less than half the time.

Of US births with the Sun in the Placidus 10th house, 45 percent also have it in the whole sign 10th house. Another 45 percent have it in the whole sign 11th. The rest have it in the 9th or the 12th.

Now start from the other side. Of births with the Sun in the whole sign 10th house, 45 percent have it in the Placidus 10th. Another 45 percent have it in the Placidus 9th. That means the Sun has already crossed the top of the sky. By Sun time, about half of these whole sign cases fall after noon.

The Sun sign decides much of this. For an Aries or a Taurus Sun, the two systems agree most of the time. For a Libra or a Scorpio Sun, they almost never do. Only about one in twenty of those Placidus 10th house Suns is in the whole sign 10th as well.

How common is it? The hospital clock

If babies were born at the same rate every minute of the day, the Sun would sit in each house one time in twelve. That is 8.33 percent. Our even clock count gave 8.36 percent under Placidus.

The CDC, the US public health agency, puts every birth record into one public file each year. The CDC natality file for 2024 holds 3,638,436 births. Only 666 of them lack a time of birth. The three hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. hold 15.7 percent of all births. An even clock would give them 12.5 percent.

So we weighted our count by the real 2024 birth hours, with the month and the day of the week kept apart.

Birth hours usedPlacidus housesWhole sign houses.
Even clock8.36 percent8.38 percent.
Real US hours, 202410.43 percent10.48 percent.

With real hours, the Sun in the 10th house goes from one birth in twelve to about one in 9.6. That is a rise of about a quarter, in both systems.

It is not the top house for the Sun, though. Under Placidus, our guide to the Sun in the 11th house found 10.51 percent, a hair more. The 10th comes second and the 9th third, at 10.36 percent. Our guide to the Sun in the 8th house drew 1.2 million random charts and rounds the 10th to 10.5 percent. The exact sum gives 10.43. Both agree on the order.

Planned C-sections: fewer here than one house down

The CDC file says how each baby was born. For a C-section, it also says if labor had started first. A C-section with no labor first is a birth planned ahead. In 2024 these were 23 percent of births.

Planned C-sections peak at 8 a.m., the first slot of the surgery day. That hour belongs to the 12th and 11th houses. They come back at noon, with 8.6 percent of planned births in the 12 p.m. hour. That second wave lands close to the top of the sky.

For the 8 a.m. slot, our guide to the Sun in the 12th house shows which of those two rooms gets it, month by month.

Kind of birth in 2024Share of all birthsSun in the 10th house, Placidus.
C-section with no labor first23 percent of births14.8 percent of these births.
C-section after labor had started9 percent of births8.8 percent of these births.
Vaginal birth, labor not induced40 percent of births9.1 percent of these births.
Labor induced with drugs, any delivery34 percent of births9.2 percent of these births.

A planned C-section baby has the Sun in the 10th house in about one birth in seven. That is less than the 17.9 percent our 11th house guide found one room lower, but still far above one in twelve. Births that start on their own sit near 9 percent.

The weekend shows the same pull. A weekday birth has the Sun in the 10th house 10.69 percent of the time. A weekend birth has it 9.46 percent of the time.

The season matters more than the hour

The 10th house window grows in summer, so your birth month shifts the odds a lot. With real hours and Placidus, 12.9 percent of June births have the Sun in the 10th house. In December it is 7.9 percent.

So your Sun sign shifts the odds too. The even clock column holds for any hour pattern. The real hours column is for a baby born under the 2024 pattern.

A Gemini or Cancer Sun is about 12.8 percent likely to sit in the Placidus 10th house. A Sagittarius or Capricorn Sun is about 8 percent likely. The tradition pairs the 10th house with Capricorn, the 10th sign. Yet a Capricorn Sun lands there least, because it shines in the short days of winter.

Whole sign houses give a steeper curve. With real hours, a Taurus Sun is in the whole sign 10th house 13.3 percent of the time. A Capricorn Sun is there 6.5 percent of the time, about half the rate.

Our guide to the Sun in Taurus gives the odds for all twelve houses, in both systems.

What the old books say about the Sun here

The Greek writers split the houses by strength. The four angles were the strong ones: the 1st, the 10th, the 7th and the 4th. Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology from 2017, sets out this scheme. He notes that the old word for these places meant busy or active.

Of the four, the 10th house is the most visible. Vettius Valens, in the Anthologies from the 2nd century, ties this place to action, deeds and rank. Demetra George, who spent years bringing the Greek texts back, keeps that sense in view: the place of what you do in public.

The Greeks gave each planet a house where it was glad to be. They called it the planet’s joy. The Sun’s joy is the 9th house, the room of God, just past the top of the sky. So the 10th house is not the Sun’s joy. It is the room of action right beside it.

A Sun above the horizon also makes a day chart. In the Greek system, the Sun leads the day team. So in a day chart the Sun is the main light of the whole chart.

Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos from the same century, lists five places he trusts when he judges the length of life. The 10th house is one of them.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology from 1647, keeps score with points. He gives five points to a planet in the 10th house. Only the 1st house matches it. The 11th gets four and the 9th two. For Lilly, a Sun in the 10th is in the strongest seat in the chart. He reads the house as rank, honor, trade and the mother.

The Moon also stands for the mother, so a Moon in the 10th house puts that theme in the same room twice.

What modern writers add

The modern reading moved the 10th house from rank to calling. Liz Greene reads the chart as a map of the inner life. In that frame the 10th becomes the self you show the world, and the parent who taught you what the world wants.

Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols from 1981, links the Midheaven to the goals you set for yourself in public. Stephen Arroyo reads the house of the Sun as the field of life where a person wants to feel most alive. Put that field in the 10th and the self comes alive through work that others can see.

Here is how those readings show up in a life. We give them as the tradition gives them, not as a forecast. No house placement decides a career.

The self is built through work. Many modern authors see these natives come into their own through a role, a craft or a title. They know who they are once they know what they do.

Being seen is part of the goal. The 10th is the most public room in the chart. The Sun there wants its work to carry its name.

A parent sets the bar. The 10th house is one of the parent houses. Many writers read a Sun here as a child who measured itself against a strong parent, and later against a boss.

The climb is not over. A Placidus 10th house Sun has not yet reached its high point. The Greek writers read the east half of the sky as the rising half, where things grow and gain strength.

Is your Sun in the 10th house? Check these three things

First, you need a birth time you can trust. Look for the time on your long form birth record, not a family memory.

Second, know which house system your app uses. On October 8, 2026, in New York, a birth at 12:30 p.m. EDT has the Sun in the Placidus 10th house. The same birth has it in the whole sign 11th house. At 2 p.m. it is the other way round: whole sign 10th, Placidus 9th.

Third, work out your Sun time, not just your clock time. Take the Sun’s high point for your city and date. Under Placidus, the Sun is in the 10th house only before that moment. After it, the Sun has moved into the 9th house, covered in our guide to the Sun in the 9th house. A birth at 12:45 p.m. in Atlanta on July 26 is still in the 10th, since the Sun peaks there at 1:44 p.m.

If your birth time is near the edge, a few minutes can move the Sun one room. Early in the window it slides back into the 11th house. Late in the window it slides on into the 9th.

Mercury makes the same trip a little ahead of the Sun or a little behind it, as our guide to Mercury in the 9th house shows.

How we counted

We want you to be able to check this, so here is the full method. It is the same setup as our guides to the Sun in the 8th and the 11th house, so the pages can be read side by side.

Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau and weighted by its head count. We grouped the counties into 303 cells, each with its own time zone. Puerto Rico is left out, as it is in the CDC file.

Dates: every day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the official time zone rules, war time and summer time included.

Birth hours: the CDC natality file for 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. For the kinds of birth, we used three fields of the same file: the way the baby was born, if labor was induced, and, for a C-section, if labor was tried first. We used the 2024 pattern for every year. Births in the 1970s had far fewer planned C-sections, so for older readers the true share sits between the even clock value and the 2024 value.

Route one: an exact sum. Under Placidus, the Sun is in the 10th house from one third of its morning time before its high point until the high point itself. We solved for the start and end of that window each day, in each place. Then we added up the births that fall inside it. This gave 10.43 percent, and every figure by kind of birth, by weekday, by month and by sign.

Route two: a regular grid every third day and every two minutes, with our own formulas for the Sun and the rising degree. It gave the same 10.43 percent under Placidus, and 10.48 percent under whole sign houses. The clock hour table comes from this grid.

Route three: 1.2 million charts drawn at random with a fixed seed, each one built with the Swiss Ephemeris. It gave 10.42 percent under Placidus, give or take 0.03, and 10.46 percent under whole sign houses. The three routes agree. The Midheaven and system overlap figures come from this route and from a second grid every fifth day.

Sun noon on the clock: the Swiss Ephemeris time of the Sun’s high point for each city, checked against the standard formula with the Sun’s yearly drift. For the county range we used the formula for every day of 2026.

Questions people ask

What time of day gives the Sun in the 10th house?

Under Placidus, the last third of the morning, ending at noon by the Sun. At the equinox that is 10 a.m. to noon by the Sun. On a US clock the window runs from about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in summer, and closes near noon in winter.

Is noon on the clock the same as the Sun’s high point?

Almost never. In the lower 48 states the Sun peaks between 11:16 a.m. and 2:08 p.m. on the clock, by place and season. It comes after 1 p.m. on 42.6 percent of days for the US population.

How common is the Sun in the 10th house?

On an even clock, one chart in twelve. With real US birth hours from 2024, it rises to 10.43 percent under Placidus, about one birth in 9.6. Only the 11th house holds the Sun a little more.

Is a Sun in the 10th house the same as a Sun on the Midheaven?

Under Placidus, the Sun sits just before the Midheaven. Under whole sign houses, not always. The Midheaven falls outside the whole sign 10th house in about two US charts in five.

Why does my app put my Sun in the 9th or 11th house instead?

Your app might use the other house system, or your birth time sits near the edge of the window. For a Libra or Scorpio Sun, the two systems almost never agree on the 10th house. Nearly half of whole sign 10th house Suns are Placidus 9th house Suns.
