Sun in the 11th House: The Morning Birth Hospitals Book Most

If your Sun is in the 11th house, you were born in the morning. Under the house method most US apps use, that means about 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. by the Sun, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on most clocks.

Those are the busiest hours of a US maternity ward. Planned C-sections start at 8 a.m., and the rest of the day’s planned births follow. So this placement is more common than the math of twelve houses says. On an even clock it would be one birth in twelve. With the real US birth hours of 2024, it is about one birth in nine and a half.

This guide shows the clock times for your city, the count behind that figure, and what the old and new books say the Sun means here. Every number comes from our own count. The method is at the end, so you can check it.

The 11th house, in plain words

Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house covers one field of life.

The 11th house covers friends, allies, groups and the hopes you share with them. It also covers the gains that reach you through other people. The Greek writers had a warmer name for it. They called it the house of the Good Spirit, the room of luck and help from outside. Our guide to 11th house astrology and its old name tells that story in full.

The Sun stands for the core of you: the self you grow into, and where you want to shine. Put it in the 11th house and the self grows up in company. It finds out who it is through the people it stands beside and the aims it shares with them.

Now the sky part. The houses are not fixed to the stars. They are fixed to the ground under your feet. The 1st house starts at the east edge of the sky, where the Sun comes up. The 10th house sits near the top. The 12th and the 11th fill the climb between the two.

So the 11th house is the band of sky in the east, about two thirds of the way up. The Sun passes through it each morning, after it has cleared the low sky and before it reaches its high point. That is why this placement is tied to the clock. For the whole grid, see our guide to the twelve houses in astrology.

Two ways to draw the houses

There are two common ways to cut the sky, and they can give different answers for the Sun.

Whole sign houses are the oldest way. The sign rising in the east at your birth is your whole 1st house, the next sign is your 2nd, and so on. The Greek writers used this and nothing else.

Placidus houses cut the sky by time. The path of each planet from the east edge to its high point is split into three equal parts of time. Most US sites and apps use this one.

For the Sun, Placidus gives a clean rule. The Sun is in the 11th house during the middle third of the time between sunrise and its high point. We give both systems below, and we say which one each number uses.

What time of day puts the Sun in the 11th house

Start with Sun time. At noon by the Sun, the Sun stands highest in your sky. On the two equinox days, when day and night have the same length, the Sun rises at 6 a.m. by the Sun.

Split those six morning hours into thirds. The 12th house takes 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The 11th takes 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The 10th takes 10 a.m. to noon. So on those two days, the Sun is in the 11th house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. by the Sun, to the minute.

The rest of the year the window moves. In June the days are long, so the thirds are longer and start earlier. The window runs from about 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. by the Sun. In December the days are short. The window shrinks to about 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. by the Sun.

Sun time is not clock time

Your birth record shows clock time, not Sun time. Two things pull them apart.

First, your time zone is wide. The clock is the same across the whole zone, but the Sun reaches its high point later the farther west you live. Second, daylight saving time moves the clock one hour ahead from March to November. So an 8 a.m. Sun in July reads close to 9 a.m. on the wall.

Here is the Placidus window for the Sun in the 11th house in three big US cities, in local clock time. We found each start and end with the Swiss Ephemeris, the same engine many chart apps use. We checked the house of the Sun every thirty seconds.

EST, CST and PST are winter clock time. EDT, CDT and PDT are summer clock time. At the two equinoxes, all three cities match the 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sun rule, once you undo the time zone and the summer shift.

Look at June. In New York the window opens just before 8 a.m. on the clock and lasts two and a half hours. In December it opens near 9 a.m. and lasts an hour and a half. Since 2007, other years move these times by a minute or two, no more. Before 2007, summer time started in April and ended in late October, so check the clock rule for your birth year.

The odds at each clock hour

We then asked a plain question. Of all US babies born in a given clock hour, how many have the Sun in the 11th house under Placidus? We used every third day from 1940 to 2030, with a check every two minutes.

Clock hour of birthShare with the Sun in the 11th house.
Before 7 a.m.Almost none.
7 a.m. to 8 a.m.2.5 percent of births.
8 a.m. to 9 a.m.32.2 percent of births.
9 a.m. to 10 a.m.90.7 percent of births.
10 a.m. to 11 a.m.66.7 percent of births.
11 a.m. to noon7.3 percent of births.
Noon or laterAlmost none.

So a US baby born between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the clock has the Sun in the 11th house nine times in ten. The 8 a.m. hour is split, and the month decides. From April to July, about half of these babies or more have the Sun in the 11th house, and two in three in June. The rest of the year, most have it in the 12th, one room lower. That is nine in ten in January. Before 7 a.m. or after noon, the odds are close to zero.

How common is it? The hospital clock changes the answer

If babies were born at the same rate every minute of the day, the Sun would sit in each house one time in twelve. That is 8.33 percent. Our even clock count gave 8.36 percent under Placidus and 8.38 percent under whole sign houses.

Under Placidus on an even clock, the 11th house and the 8th house are twins. Each one is a third of the Sun’s time above the horizon, so each gets the same share, to the last digit. Our guide to the Sun in the 8th house found the same 8.36 percent. The hospital is what splits the twins.

The CDC, the US public health agency, puts every birth record into one public file each year. The 2024 file holds 3,638,436 births. Only 666 of them lack a time of birth. The busiest hour is 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., with 6.3 percent of all births. An even clock would give each hour 4.2 percent.

So we weighted our count by the real 2024 birth hours, with the month and the day of the week kept apart.

Birth hours usedPlacidus housesWhole sign houses.
Even clock8.36 percent8.38 percent.
Real US hours, 202410.51 percent10.47 percent.

With real hours, the Sun in the 11th house goes from one birth in twelve to one in nine and a half. That is a rise of about a quarter, in both systems.

Our 8th house guide drew its own 1.2 million random charts and got 10.56 percent for the 11th, which it rounds to 10.6. Our own draw gave 10.53 percent. Both sit within a few hundredths of the exact sum. They agree on the main point: under Placidus with real hours, the 11th house holds the Sun more than any other house. The 10th and the 9th come next, a hair behind.

Planned C-sections: the 8 a.m. slot

The CDC file says how each baby was born. For a C-section, it also says if labor had started first. A C-section with no labor first is a birth planned ahead. Hospitals book these at the start of the surgery day.

In 2024, 14.2 percent of these planned births took place in the 8 a.m. hour. Another 22.8 percent came between 9 a.m. and noon. That is the 11th house on the clock. Our guide to Venus in the 12th house found the same 8 a.m. peak in the same file.

So we ran the count for each kind of birth.

Kind of birth in 2024Share of all birthsSun in the 11th house, Placidus.
C-section with no labor first23 percent of births17.9 percent of these births.
C-section after labor had started9 percent of births8.7 percent of these births.
Vaginal birth, labor not induced40 percent of births8.8 percent of these births.
Labor induced with drugs, any delivery34 percent of births7.6 percent of these births.

A planned C-section baby has the Sun in the 11th house in more than one birth in six. That is more than twice the even clock rate. Births that start on their own sit close to one in twelve, as you would expect. The last row overlaps the second, since some induced labors end in a C-section.

Induced births go the other way. Induced means labor was started on purpose with drugs. The drip goes in during the morning, and the baby comes out in the afternoon, when the Sun has moved west. That is why the 8th house guide found induction behind the rise of the Sun in the 8th house.

Put it together and one figure stands out. Planned C-sections were 23 percent of US births in 2024. Yet they made up 39 percent of the babies born with the Sun in the 11th house. Close to two in five of these charts were set by a surgery schedule.

The same morning rush lifts a harsher planet too, and our guide to Mars in the 11th house finds three in four of those births by day.

Weekdays and weekends

Hospitals book far fewer planned births on the weekend. In 2024, 13 percent of planned C-sections fell on a Saturday or a Sunday, against 21 percent of all births. The day of the week shows up in the count.

Day of birthSun in the 11th house, Placidus, real hours.
Monday10.87 percent.
Tuesday10.72 percent.
Wednesday10.64 percent.
Thursday10.52 percent.
Friday10.82 percent.
Saturday9.81 percent.
Sunday9.70 percent.

A weekday birth has the Sun in the 11th house 10.71 percent of the time. A weekend birth has it 9.76 percent of the time. Monday and Friday lead. Even on a Sunday the share stays above the even clock rate of 8.36 percent.

The season matters as much as the hour

The 11th house window grows in summer, so your birth month shifts the odds a lot. With real hours and Placidus, 13.0 percent of June births have the Sun in the 11th house. In December it is 8.1 percent.

Taurus Suns show the same pull. Our guide to the Sun in Taurus finds the 11th house is their most common home, at 12.2 percent, and two in three born with the Sun up.

That means your Sun sign shifts the odds too. The table gives the chance of a Sun in the 11th house for each Sun sign. The even clock column holds for any hour pattern. The real hours column is for a baby born under the 2024 pattern.

Sun signEven clockReal US hours, 2024.
Aries8.8 percent11.3 percent.
Taurus9.5 percent12.2 percent.
Gemini10.1 percent13.0 percent.
Cancer10.1 percent12.8 percent.

Scorpio7.1 percent8.9 percent.
Sagittarius6.6 percent8.2 percent.
Capricorn6.6 percent8.2 percent.
Aquarius7.1 percent8.8 percent.
Pisces7.9 percent9.9 percent.

The even clock column is the same as the one in our 8th house guide, sign for sign. That is the twin rule again. The real hours column is where they part. A Gemini Sun is about 13 percent likely to sit in the 11th house, against about 11 percent for the 8th.

There is an irony here. The tradition pairs the 11th house with Aquarius, the 11th sign. Yet an Aquarius Sun lands in the 11th house less than most, because it shines in the short days of winter.

Our guide to the Sun in Aquarius gives its share in every house, for both house systems.

What the old books say about the Sun here

The Greek writers gave each planet a house where it was glad to be. They called it the planet’s joy. The Sun’s joy is the 9th house, the room of God, just past the top of the sky. The 11th house is the joy of Jupiter, the planet of gifts.

So a Sun in the 11th house is climbing toward its joy. It sits in the house of the Good Spirit, two rooms before its own best seat. The old writers read the east half of the sky as the rising half, where things grow and gain strength.

Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos from the 2nd century, lists five places he trusts when he judges the length of life. The 11th house is one of them, under its name of the Good Spirit. The 8th house is not.

The old writers also cared about what a house can see. The 11th house looks at the 1st, the house of the self, across a friendly angle of sixty degrees. So a Sun there shines on things the native can see and use.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology from 1647, keeps score with points. He gives four points to a planet in the 11th house. Only the 1st and the 10th score more, with five. The 9th gets two, and the 12th loses five. For Lilly, a Sun in the 11th is one of the strong seats in the chart. He reads the house as friends, hope, trust and praise, and the help that comes from those above you.

What modern writers add

The modern reading moved the 11th house from luck to belonging. Liz Greene reads the chart as a map of the inner life. In that frame the 11th becomes the place where you find your people. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols from 1981, ties the house to the goals a group shares.

Stephen Arroyo reads the house of the Sun as the field of life where a person wants to feel most alive. Put that field in the 11th and the self comes alive in a crowd with a purpose. Demetra George, who spent years bringing the Greek texts back, keeps the older sense in view: the good that reaches you from outside.

Here is how those readings show up in a life. We give them as the tradition gives them, not as a forecast.

The self is built in a group. Many modern authors see these natives come into their own through a team, a club, a cause or a scene. They know who they are once they know who they stand with.

Hopes are part of the self. The 11th is the house of what you wish for. The Sun there wants a future to aim at, and it wants to share it.

Help comes from the side. In the old reading, the gains of this house come through friends and patrons. The Sun there shines brightest when other people carry the light with it.

Fame is a group thing. A Sun here wins its name through a network, not alone on a stage. The house next door, covered in our guide to the Sun in the 10th house, is the one for the solo stage.

Is your Sun in the 11th house? Check these three things

First, you need a birth time you can trust. Look for the time on your long form birth record, not a family memory. A US birth outside the 7 a.m. to noon clock range almost never has the Sun in the 11th house under Placidus.

Second, know which house system your app uses. The two systems can give different answers for the same birth. On June 21, 2026, in New York, the Placidus window is 7:59 to 10:29 a.m. EDT. The whole sign window that day is 10:25 a.m. to 12:56 p.m. EDT. A baby born at 9 a.m. that day has the Sun in the 11th house in one system and the 12th in the other.

Third, allow for error near the edges. A time off by an hour can move the Sun one room. Late in the window it slides up into the 10th house. Early in the window it slides back down into the 12th, which we cover in our guide to the Sun in the 12th house.

If your birth was a planned C-section, your parents might remember the booking. A slot at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. points to the 12th or the 11th house. Look at the exact minute on the record before you decide which.

How we counted

We want you to be able to check this, so here is the full method. It is the same setup as our 8th house guide, so the two pages can be read side by side.

Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau and weighted by its head count. We grouped the counties into 303 cells, each with its own time zone. Puerto Rico is left out, as it is in the CDC file.

Dates: every day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the official time zone rules, war time and summer time included.

Birth hours: the CDC natality file for 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. For the kinds of birth, we used three fields of the same file: the way the baby was born, if labor was induced, and, for a C-section, if labor was tried first. We used the 2024 pattern for every year. Births in the 1970s had far fewer planned C-sections, so for older readers the true share sits between the even clock value and the 2024 value.

Route one: an exact sum. For the Sun, Placidus has a simple rule. The Sun is in the 11th house when it is between two thirds and one third of its morning time away from its high point. We solved for the start and end of that window each day, in each place. Then we added up the births that fall inside it. This gave 10.51 percent, and every figure by kind of birth, by weekday, by month and by sign.

Route two: a regular grid every third day and every two minutes, with our own formulas for the Sun and the rising degree. It gave the same 10.51 percent under Placidus, and 10.47 percent under whole sign houses. The clock hour table comes from this grid.

Route three: 1.2 million charts drawn at random with a fixed seed, each one built with the Swiss Ephemeris. It gave 10.53 percent, give or take 0.03, and 10.45 percent under whole sign houses. The three routes agree.

Questions people ask

How common is the Sun in the 11th house?

On an even clock, one chart in twelve, or 8.36 percent under Placidus. With real US birth hours from 2024, it rises to 10.51 percent under Placidus and 10.47 percent under whole sign houses. That makes it the most common house for the Sun under Placidus.

What time of day gives the Sun in the 11th house?

Under Placidus, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. by the Sun at the equinox. It starts earlier and runs longer in summer, and runs later and shorter in winter. On the clock, nearly all US cases fall between 7 a.m. and noon. The 9 a.m. hour has the best odds, at 90.7 percent.

Are C-section babies more likely to have the Sun in the 11th house?

Planned ones are. In the 2024 CDC file, 17.9 percent of C-sections with no labor first have the Sun in the 11th house under Placidus. That is more than twice the even clock rate, because hospitals book these births from 8 a.m. on.

Why does my app put my Sun in the 12th house instead?

Your app might use whole sign houses, or your birth time sits near the edge of the window. The two systems split the sky in different ways. On some days their windows for the 11th house are two hours apart.

Is the Sun in the 11th house a good placement?

In the old score books, yes. William Lilly gives a planet in the 11th house four points, one short of the best seats. The Greeks called the house the Good Spirit and trusted it for long life. Modern writers read it as a self built through friends, groups and shared hopes.
