Here is the short answer first. Jupiter in the 10th house means Jupiter was near the top of the sky when you were born. It was still climbing. It would reach its highest point within the next two hours or so.
On an even clock, about one chart in twelve has it. But US babies are not born at even hours, and Jupiter does not keep one hour. Its 10th house hour depends on where it stands from the Sun. So we counted US births with the real hours of the hospital day. A Jupiter close to the Sun lands in the 10th house about one time in ten. A Jupiter far to the west of the Sun lands there about one time in sixteen. The method is at the end, so you can check each number.
Where Jupiter sits when it is in your 10th house
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house stands for one part of life. The 10th house stands for your public role: your work, your name, and the people above you. Our guide to the 10th house and where it really starts covers the room itself. Here we stay with Jupiter in it.
The houses are fixed to the ground, not to the stars. The sky turns once a day. So every planet climbs in the east, peaks in the south, and sets in the west, each day.
The highest point of that daily path has a name. It is the Midheaven, the point of the zodiac due south at your birth. Most US sites and apps use Placidus houses. In that method, the 10th house starts at the Midheaven and runs back to the east. It holds the last third of a planet’s climb, from about two hours before its peak to the peak itself.
So Jupiter in the 10th house has a plain meaning in the sky. At your birth, Jupiter was high in the south east and still rising. Once it crossed the Midheaven, it moved on into the 9th house.
The Midheaven and the 10th house are not always one thing
There is a second way to draw the houses. Whole sign houses are the oldest method. The sign on the eastern skyline is your whole 1st house. The next sign is your 2nd house, and so on. So your 10th house is the tenth sign counted from your rising sign.
In that method, the Midheaven floats. It can land in the 9th, the 10th or the 11th house. Our guide to the Sun in the 10th house counted this for US births. The Midheaven lands in the whole sign 10th house in 60.7 percent of charts. It lands in the 9th in 19.7 percent and in the 11th in 19.6 percent.
That matters for Jupiter. We took the US births with Jupiter within 5 degrees of the Midheaven. Only 60.6 percent of them have Jupiter in the whole sign 10th house. The rest have it in the 9th or the 11th. So a Jupiter right on top of your chart can still sit outside the whole sign 10th house.
Two ways to draw the 10th house, two sets of people
The two methods give this house to about the same share of people. They do not give it to the same people. Here is where whole sign houses put the babies who have Jupiter in the Placidus 10th house.
| Where whole sign houses put that same Jupiter | Share of the Placidus 10th house births. |
|---|---|
| Also in the 10th house | 43.1 percent of them. |
| In the 11th house | 47.6 percent of them. |
| In the 9th house | 5.0 percent of them. |
| In the 12th house | 4.2 percent of them. |
So fewer than half agree. Now turn it around. Of the babies with Jupiter in the whole sign 10th house, 43.1 percent have it in the Placidus 10th. Another 47.1 percent have it in the Placidus 9th. For those, Jupiter had already passed its high point.
That fits what our other Jupiter pages found. On Jupiter in the 1st house, the two methods agree about half the time. Our pages on Jupiter in the 2nd house and in the 3rd house found the same kind of split. The 10th house is no different.
How long the window lasts depends on Jupiter’s sign
Jupiter passes through the 10th house once a day. How long it stays there depends on how high it rides.
The zodiac is the band of sky the Sun and planets move along. It is tilted. From the US, Gemini and Cancer ride high in the sky. A planet there spends a long time above the skyline. Sagittarius and Capricorn ride low. A planet there spends a short time above it.
The Placidus 10th house is one third of a planet’s time from rising to its peak. A long day path makes a long 10th house. So Jupiter in Gemini or Cancer stays in the 10th house about two and a half hours at US latitudes. Jupiter in Sagittarius or Capricorn stays about an hour and a half.
Here is the share of charts with Jupiter in the 10th house, by Jupiter’s sign. This uses an even clock, over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402.
| Jupiter’s sign | Placidus 10th house | Whole sign 10th house. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.8 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Taurus | 9.5 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| Gemini | 10.1 percent | 10.3 percent. |
| Cancer | 10.1 percent | 10.3 percent. |
| Leo | 9.5 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| Virgo | 8.8 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Libra | 7.9 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| Scorpio | 7.1 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| Sagittarius | 6.6 percent | 5.2 percent. |
| Capricorn | 6.6 percent | 5.2 percent. |
| Aquarius | 7.1 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| Pisces | 7.9 percent | 8.1 percent. |
This is the mirror of the 1st house. There, a low Jupiter in Sagittarius or Capricorn wins, because it spends long hours below the skyline. In the 10th house, a high Jupiter wins, because it spends long hours above it.
The whole sign column follows a close rule. Your 10th sign is three signs before your rising sign. For Jupiter in Capricorn to be there, Aries must be rising. Aries is one of the fastest signs to cross the eastern skyline. So few birth minutes give that chart.
The Sun sets the clock for Jupiter
Here is the part most pages skip. The hour when Jupiter is in the 10th house is not fixed. It depends on where Jupiter stands from the Sun.
The Sun peaks near noon, by the Sun. A Jupiter next to the Sun peaks near noon too. So it sits in the 10th house in the late morning. A Jupiter a quarter of the sky east of the Sun peaks near 6 p.m. A Jupiter across the sky from the Sun peaks near midnight. A Jupiter a quarter of the sky west of the Sun peaks near 6 a.m.
Astrologers call a Jupiter east of the Sun an evening Jupiter. It shines after dusk. A Jupiter west of the Sun is a morning Jupiter. It rises before the Sun.
Jupiter takes about 13 months to go round from the Sun and back. So its 10th house window slides round the clock, close to two hours earlier each month. Over one year of birth dates, it visits every hour of the day.
The table shows the usual clock hours for each case. Clock time means the time on a birth record, with summer time where it applied. It covers US births from 1940 to 2030.
| Where Jupiter stood from the Sun | Clock hours of the Placidus 10th house. |
|---|---|
| Next to the Sun, within 30 degrees | about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., peak in the 11 a.m. and noon hours. |
| Evening Jupiter, 30 to 150 degrees east | about 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., spread over the afternoon. |
| Facing the Sun, 150 to 180 degrees away | about 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., peak in the 11 p.m. hour. |
| Morning Jupiter, 30 to 150 degrees west | about 1 a.m. to 10 a.m., spread over the night. |
A note on the clock. Clock noon is rarely noon by the Sun. Our guide to the Sun in the 10th house found that the Sun peaks after 1 p.m. on 42.6 percent of days, for the US population. Summer time and the width of each time zone push the Sun’s noon late. So every window above runs later on a birth record than on a sundial.
What we measured: the hospital clock picks who gets it
If babies came at even hours, the angle to the Sun would change nothing. Each Jupiter spends its time in the 10th house every day, whatever the angle.
But US babies do not come at even hours. The CDC, the US public health agency, puts out every US birth record each year as a public file. The CDC natality file 2024 holds 3,638,436 births. Only 666 of them lack a time. The busiest hour is 8 a.m., with 6.27 percent of all births. The quietest is the 4 a.m. hour, with 3.02 percent. Planned C-sections, with no labor first, make up 23 percent of births and peak at 8 a.m.
So we weighted every birth minute by its real share of US births, month and weekday included. Here is what we found under Placidus, for US births from 1940 to 2030.
| Where Jupiter stood from the Sun | Even clock | Real US birth hours. |
|---|---|---|
| Next to the Sun, within 30 degrees | 8.37 percent | 10.47 percent. |
| Evening Jupiter, 30 to 90 degrees east | 8.34 percent | 9.57 percent. |
| Evening Jupiter, 90 to 150 degrees east | 8.30 percent | 8.05 percent. |
| Facing the Sun, 150 to 180 degrees away | 8.43 percent | 6.95 percent. |
| Morning Jupiter, 90 to 150 degrees west | 8.34 percent | 6.14 percent. |
| Morning Jupiter, 30 to 90 degrees west | 8.39 percent | 9.11 percent. |
| All US births | 8.36 percent | 8.57 percent. |
Read the even clock column first. Every row sits near 8.3 or 8.4 percent. The sky gives each case the same odds.
Now read the real hours column. A Jupiter next to the Sun sits in the 10th house in the late morning, when wards are busy. It lands there in one US birth in ten. That is close to the 10.43 percent our page on the Sun in the 10th house found for the Sun itself. It makes sense. A Jupiter next to the Sun keeps the Sun’s hours.
A morning Jupiter 90 to 150 degrees west of the Sun is the other end. It peaks between about 2 and 6 a.m. by the Sun. Its 10th house hours fall in the quiet part of the night. It lands there in one US birth in sixteen. The gap between the two rows is a factor of 1.7. The sky did not make it. The ward did.
A Jupiter that faces the Sun peaks near midnight. Its 10th house hours run late in the evening, and it lands there in about one birth in fourteen.
Why the total goes up, not down
For the 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses, our Jupiter pages found that real hours pull the total down a little. For the 10th house, the total goes up, from 8.36 to 8.57 percent. Why?
Jupiter spends more time near the Sun than across from it. In our 1940 to 2030 grid, it sat within 30 degrees of the Sun about 20 percent of the time. It sat within 30 degrees of the far point only 13.5 percent of the time. Our page on Jupiter in the 5th house found the same share, and explains why. Near the Sun, Jupiter moves forward and the gap closes slowly. So the busy late morning gets a Jupiter a little more of the time than the quiet night does.
Babies born in 2026 and 2027
Jupiter was in Cancer until June 30, 2026, UTC. It is in Leo until July 26, 2027, UTC, then it moves into Virgo. Both Cancer and Leo ride high. So on an even clock, 2026 babies get a 10th house Jupiter 9 to 10 percent of the time, not 8.3.
The angle to the Sun then moves the odds month by month. Jupiter faced the Sun on January 10, 2026. It passed behind the Sun on July 29, 2026. It faces the Sun again on the evening of February 10, 2027, in New York time. It passes behind the Sun again on August 31, 2027.
The table gives the Placidus 10th house window in New York on the 15th of the month. EST is winter time and EDT is summer time. The last column is the share of all US births that month with Jupiter in the Placidus 10th house, with real birth hours.
| Birth date in New York | Placidus 10th house window | US births that month with it. |
|---|---|---|
| January 15, 2026 | 9:10 to 11:37 p.m. EST | 8.7 percent. |
| March 15, 2026 | 6:00 to 8:27 p.m. EDT | 9.8 percent. |
| May 15, 2026 | 2:27 to 4:53 p.m. EDT | 11.2 percent. |
| July 15, 2026 | 11:21 a.m. to 1:44 p.m. EDT | 12.4 percent. |
| September 15, 2026 | 8:16 to 10:34 a.m. EDT | 12.0 percent. |
| November 15, 2026 | 3:55 to 6:10 a.m. EST | 6.8 percent. |
| January 15, 2027 | 11:49 p.m. to 2:04 a.m. EST | 7.4 percent. |
| March 15, 2027 | 8:27 to 10:45 p.m. EDT | 8.6 percent. |
| May 15, 2027 | 4:29 to 6:46 p.m. EDT | 10.1 percent. |
| July 15, 2027 | 1:09 to 3:23 p.m. EDT | 10.8 percent. |
Look at July 2026 and December 2026. In July, Jupiter was next to the Sun, and its window sat on the late morning. In December, Jupiter was a morning Jupiter far west of the Sun, and its window sat before dawn. July 2026 gave 12.4 percent. December 2026 gave 6.7 percent. That is close to two to one, in the same year and the same sign.
The windows here are clock times, not Sun time. Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles have their own windows. Your chart app works them out from your birth place. Our page on Jupiter in the 9th house covers the room Jupiter enters once it passes the top of the sky.
What the old books say about Jupiter at the top
Numbers tell you how common a placement is. They do not tell you what it means. For that, astrologers turn to the books.
Vettius Valens wrote his Anthologies in the second century. In Mark Riley’s translation, his chapter on this room is headed “The X Place, Midheaven”. He opens with a condition. Both kinds of planets, the kind ones and the harsh ones, rejoice here if they hold certain roles in the chart. Then he writes that if the benefics are in it when rising, “tyrants and kings are born, governors of districts, men known by name in many places.” Jupiter is the greater benefic, the kinder of the two kind planets.
Note the conditions. Valens does not promise rank to every Jupiter here. He ties the best result to a planet “when rising”. Many readers of the Greek texts take that to mean a planet in its morning phase, one that rises before the Sun. Our count gives that case two faces. A morning Jupiter 30 to 90 degrees west of the Sun lands in the 10th house in 9.11 percent of US births. One 90 to 150 degrees west lands there in 6.14 percent, the lowest of all.
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book IV he judges the kind of work a person does. He takes it from two planets: the one that rose last before the Sun at dawn, and the one at the Midheaven. So the top of the chart was already tied to work in his day.
William Lilly kept the idea in 1647. In Christian Astrology he says the 10th house stands for kings, judges, officers in authority, mothers, honour, office, and “the profession or Trade any one useth”. He adds that Jupiter or the Sun “doe much fortunate this House” when they sit there. Lilly also gave points for where a planet stood. The 1st and 10th houses earned five points, the most of any room.
One idea does not fit. The Greeks gave each planet one room of joy. Firmicus Maternus and Paulus Alexandrinus give the same list. Jupiter’s joy is the 11th house, the room of good spirit and friends, just past the top of the chart. No planet has its joy in the 10th. Our page on Jupiter in the 11th house covers that room.
What modern writers add
Modern writers moved Jupiter from luck to growth. Robert Hand reads it as the urge to grow and to take part in something larger. Stephen Arroyo ties it to faith and to where you feel most free. Liz Greene reads it as trust that life will open up, with the risk of taking on more than you can hold.
Demetra George and Chris Brennan went back to the Greek sources. Brennan’s 2017 book, Hellenistic Astrology, sets out whole sign houses and the joys. Robert Hand also wrote a short book on whole sign houses in 2000. Both remind readers that the 10th sign and the Midheaven are two different things.
Put the urge to grow in the house of your public role, and here is how the books read it. We give it as the tradition gives it, not as a forecast.
- A wide aim. Jupiter here wants work that means something beyond the pay.
- A teacher’s stance. People come to you for the big picture, and you like to give it.
- Help from above. The old books read the 10th house for bosses and patrons. A kind planet here points to good will from them.
- A public face. What you do tends to be seen, for good and for ill.
- Too much of a good thing. Jupiter swells what it touches. Here it can mean a promise that runs ahead of the work.
None of this is a promise of a job, a title or a salary. A chart does not hand out careers. At most, the tradition says where your hope for growth points.
Is your Jupiter in the 10th house? Check three things
First, find a birth time you can trust. The window lasts one and a half to two and a half hours. A time off by an hour can move Jupiter to the 9th or the 11th house. Use the time on your birth record, not a family memory.
Second, find out which house method your app uses. Most US apps use Placidus. Some astrologers prefer whole sign houses. Fewer than half of Placidus 10th house Jupiters are also whole sign 10th house Jupiters.
Third, compare Jupiter with your Sun. A Jupiter next to the Sun needs a late morning birth to be here. A Jupiter across from the Sun needs a late evening birth. A morning Jupiter far west of the Sun needs a birth in the small hours. If your chart breaks that rule, check the time you entered.
How we counted
We want you to be able to check each number, so here is the full method.
- Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau, weighted by head count. We grouped the counties into 303 cells, each with its own time zone rules.
- Dates: every third day from January 1, 1940, to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the real time zone rules, summer time included.
- Birth hours: the CDC natality file 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. We used the 2024 pattern for every year.
- Jupiter: the Swiss Ephemeris, the star table many chart apps use, in its built in Moshier mode, in the tropical zodiac.
- Houses: Placidus puts Jupiter in the 10th house in the last third of its climb to its peak. Whole sign houses put it there when its sign is ten signs on from the rising sign, counting the rising sign as the first.
Route one is an exact sum. For each day and each place, we solved for the start and end of the Jupiter window on the clock. Then we added up the births that fall inside it. We tested that rule on 20,000 random charts from 1600 to 2400 against the Swiss Ephemeris house routine. It matched in every case.
Route two is a random draw. We drew 600,000 US births with real hours, in two runs with fixed seeds and a standard number tool. The Swiss Ephemeris built each chart. That route gave 8.62 percent under Placidus, give or take 0.04, against 8.57 for route one. It gave 8.62 percent under whole sign houses, against 8.58. The rows by angle to the Sun matched too: 10.57 percent next to the Sun, 6.90 percent facing it, and 6.23 percent for the morning Jupiter far to the west. The overlap between the two methods, and the Midheaven figures, come from this route.
The long run: we ran route one over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from its entry into Aries on May 10, 1607, to its entry into Aries on March 4, 2402. We took every 23rd day, on 2024 clock rules. The even clock gave 8.31 percent under Placidus. The real hours gave 8.52 percent. Next to the Sun gave 10.43 percent, and the morning Jupiter far to the west 6.10 percent. A second random draw of 500,000 charts on an even clock, over the same laps, gave 8.30 percent, give or take 0.04. Full laps matter. A window that stops part way through a lap gives extra weight to the signs Jupiter was in at the end.
Two limits matter. The 2024 hours are one year’s pattern. Births in 1950 were not timed by surgery plans the way they are now. For an older reader, the true split sits between the even clock column and the real hours column. And clock time is not Sun time. The sky follows Sun time, so we used each place’s true longitude.
Questions people ask
What does Jupiter in the 10th house mean in plain words?
Under Placidus houses, Jupiter was high in the sky at your birth and still climbing. It reached its highest point within about two hours. The tradition reads it as growth tied to your public role. It is not a forecast of any job.
How common is Jupiter in the 10th house?
About one US birth in twelve. For births from 1940 to 2030, we found 8.36 percent under Placidus with an even clock. With real US birth hours it rises to 8.57 percent.
What time of day gives Jupiter in the 10th house?
It depends on where Jupiter stood from the Sun. Next to the Sun, the window runs from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the clock. Facing the Sun, it runs from about 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The window moves close to two hours earlier each month.
Is Jupiter in the 10th house the same as Jupiter on the Midheaven?
Close, but not quite. Under Placidus, a 10th house Jupiter has not yet reached the Midheaven. Under whole sign houses, even a Jupiter within 5 degrees of the Midheaven sits in the 10th house only 60.6 percent of the time.
Why does one app put my Jupiter in the 10th house and another in the 9th or 11th?
The apps use different house methods. Of US births with Jupiter in the Placidus 10th house, 47.6 percent have it in the whole sign 11th house instead. Going the other way, 47.1 percent of whole sign 10th house Jupiters sit in the Placidus 9th.
Is Jupiter strong in the 10th house?
William Lilly gave any planet in the 10th house five points, the top score. He wrote that Jupiter there does much to favor the house. Valens tied the best result to a Jupiter in its morning phase. The Greek joy of Jupiter is the 11th house, not the 10th.
