If Jupiter is in your 1st house, Jupiter was just below the eastern edge of the sky when you were born. It had not come up yet. It rose in the next hour or two.
That is the rule under Placidus houses, the method most US apps use. Under whole sign houses, the older method, the answer is split. Half the time Jupiter was still below the edge. The other half it had already come up.
So the two methods agree only half the time on who has Jupiter in the 1st house. We counted where they split, how common the placement is for US births, and the clock times in New York for babies born in 2026 and 2027. The method is at the end, so you can check each number.
Where Jupiter sits when it is in your 1st house
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house stands for one field of life.
The houses are fixed to the ground, not to the stars. The line where the sky meets the land in the east is the start of the chart. The point of the zodiac on that line is your ascendant, or rising sign. We explain it in our guide to your rising sign and the face you wear first.
The 1st house starts at the ascendant and runs down, below the eastern edge. It is the slice of sky that is about to come up. Planets in it have not risen yet. Planets that rose a short while ago sit in the 12th house, just above the edge.
That surprises many people. The 1st house feels like the house of what shows. Yet in a Placidus chart, a 1st house Jupiter is still under the ground. The old writers saw it as a planet on its way up, pushing toward view. Our guide to the 1st house and what it holds covers the room itself. Here we stay with Jupiter in it.
How long Jupiter stays in the 1st house on a given day
The sky turns once a day, so every planet passes through every house each day. Jupiter spends about an hour and a half to two and a half hours in the 1st house. The exact time depends on where Jupiter is in the zodiac and how far north you live.
When Jupiter is in Cancer or Gemini, it rides high in the sky. From the US it crosses the low eastern band fast, in about an hour and a half. When Jupiter is in Sagittarius or Capricorn, it rides low. It takes close to two and a half hours.
Two ways to draw the 1st house
There are two common ways to cut the sky into houses. They give different answers for Jupiter.
Whole sign houses are the oldest way. The whole sign on the eastern edge is your 1st house, from its first degree to its last. So Jupiter is in your 1st house when it sits in the same sign as your ascendant. Our page on the whole sign house system sets out the rule.
Placidus houses cut the sky by time. The 1st house holds whatever will cross the eastern edge in the next third of its time below the ground. Most US sites and apps use Placidus.
The first method asks which sign is rising. The second asks what is about to rise. Those two questions give the same answer only part of the time.
Where the two methods agree, and where they split
We counted every day from 1940 to 2030, across the US, with births spread by where people live and by an even clock. Here is what we found for the babies who have Jupiter in the 1st house under Placidus.
| Where whole sign houses put that same Jupiter | Share of the Placidus 1st house births. |
|---|---|
| Also in the 1st house | 50.5 percent of them. |
| In the 2nd house | 47.6 percent of them. |
| In the 3rd house | 2.0 percent of them. |
So close to half of the Placidus cases move to the 2nd house under whole sign houses. Now turn it around. Take the babies with Jupiter in the 1st house under whole sign houses.
| Where Placidus puts that same Jupiter | Share of the whole sign 1st house births. |
|---|---|
| Also in the 1st house, not yet risen | 49.2 percent of them. |
| In the 12th house, already risen | 47.9 percent of them. |
| In the 2nd house, well below the edge | 1.4 percent of them. |
Almost half of whole sign cases have a Jupiter that already stood above the eastern edge. That is the gap between the two methods. Whole sign houses count a Jupiter that has just risen. Placidus counts a Jupiter that is about to rise.
The degree of Jupiter decides who agrees
The split is not random. It depends on how far Jupiter has moved through its sign. We split the 30 degrees of each sign into six bands and ran the count over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402.
| Jupiter’s degree in its sign | Placidus 1st house cases that are also whole sign 1st house. |
|---|---|
| 0 to 5 degrees | 8 percent of them. |
| 5 to 10 degrees | 25 percent of them. |
| 10 to 15 degrees | 42 percent of them. |
| 15 to 20 degrees | 59 percent of them. |
| 20 to 25 degrees | 75 percent of them. |
| 25 to 30 degrees | 86 percent of them. |
Here is why. A Placidus 1st house Jupiter sits a few degrees past the rising point. If Jupiter is late in its sign, the rising point is still in that same sign, so both methods say 1st house. If Jupiter is early in its sign, the rising point is still in the sign before. Whole sign houses then call it the 2nd house.
So look at your Jupiter’s degree. Past 20 degrees, the two methods nearly always agree. Under 5 degrees, they nearly always split.
How common is Jupiter in the 1st house?
A chart has twelve houses. If Jupiter spent the same time in each, one birth in twelve would have it in the 1st house. That is 8.33 percent.
Our count comes close to that, with a small twist between the two methods.
| What we counted | Placidus houses | Whole sign houses. |
|---|---|---|
| US births 1940 to 2030, even clock | 8.30 percent | 8.53 percent. |
| US births 1940 to 2030, real US birth hours | 8.21 percent | 8.53 percent. |
| 67 full laps of Jupiter, 1607 to 2402, even clock | 8.35 percent | 8.46 percent. |
An even clock means a baby is as likely to be born at 4 a.m. as at 8 a.m. Real US birth hours come from the CDC natality file 2024. That file holds 3,638,436 US births, and only 666 of them lack a time.
The hospital clock is far from even. The 8 a.m. hour holds 6.3 percent of all births, since planned C-sections start then. The 4 a.m. hour holds 3.0 percent. Births induced with drugs pile up from noon to 5 p.m.
Why the hospital clock barely matters here
For the Sun, Mercury and Venus, those hours change the odds a lot. Those three stay close to the Sun, so each house matches a fixed part of the day.
Jupiter is different. It rises about four minutes earlier each day, and it takes about 13 months to come back to the same hour. Over a lifetime of birth years, Jupiter rises at every hour of the clock. The busy hours and the quiet hours cancel out. So over 1940 to 2030, the real hours move Placidus from 8.30 to 8.21 percent, and whole sign houses not at all.
That changes when you look at one year. We come back to it below, for babies born in 2026 and 2027.
Jupiter’s sign changes the odds, and the two methods pull apart
Now split the count by the sign Jupiter was in. Each row is the chance of Jupiter in the 1st house, among people born with Jupiter in that sign. This is over 67 full laps of Jupiter, with an even clock.
| Jupiter’s sign | Placidus 1st house | Whole sign 1st house. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 7.9 percent | 5.2 percent. |
| Taurus | 7.1 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| Gemini | 6.6 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| Cancer | 6.6 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Leo | 7.1 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| Virgo | 7.9 percent | 10.3 percent. |
| Libra | 8.8 percent | 10.3 percent. |
| Scorpio | 9.5 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| Sagittarius | 10.1 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Capricorn | 10.1 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| Aquarius | 9.5 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| Pisces | 8.8 percent | 5.2 percent. |
The two columns follow two different rules.
The Placidus column follows how high Jupiter rides. A Jupiter in Cancer or Gemini sits far north in the sky. From the US it spends a short time below the ground, so its 1st house slice is short. A Jupiter in Sagittarius or Capricorn sits far south and stays below the ground longer.
The whole sign column follows how long each sign takes to rise. From the US, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio climb over the eastern edge slowly. Aries and Pisces shoot past.
The two rules clash hardest in Cancer and Leo. There, whole sign houses give about 1.5 times the Placidus odds. And Jupiter was in Cancer in the first half of 2026 and is in Leo until July 2027.
Babies born in 2026 and 2027
Jupiter was in Cancer from 9 June 2025 to 30 June 2026. It is in Leo from 30 June 2026 to 26 July 2027, then it moves into Virgo. We cover those two stays in Jupiter in Cancer and Jupiter in Leo.
The clock times in New York
The table gives the window for Jupiter in the 1st house on the 15th of each month, in New York clock time. EST is winter time and EDT is summer time. We found each start and end with the Swiss Ephemeris, a sky engine many chart apps use, checking every 30 seconds.
| Birth date in New York | Placidus 1st house | Whole sign 1st house. |
|---|---|---|
| January 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 2:44 to 4:17 p.m. EST | 2:47 to 5:10 p.m. EST. |
| February 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 12:27 to 1:59 p.m. EST | 12:45 to 3:08 p.m. EST. |
| March 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 11:33 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. EDT | 11:55 a.m. to 2:18 p.m. EDT. |
| April 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 9:40 to 11:12 a.m. EDT | 9:53 a.m. to 12:16 p.m. EDT. |
| May 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 8:01 to 9:34 a.m. EDT | 7:55 to 10:18 a.m. EDT. |
| June 15, 2026, Jupiter in Cancer | 6:26 to 8:01 a.m. EDT | 5:54 to 8:16 a.m. EDT. |
| July 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 4:58 to 6:35 a.m. EDT | 6:18 to 8:51 a.m. EDT. |
| August 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 3:29 to 5:07 a.m. EDT | 4:16 to 6:49 a.m. EDT. |
| September 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 1:58 to 3:39 a.m. EDT | 2:14 to 4:47 a.m. EDT. |
| October 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 12:25 to 2:08 a.m. EDT | 12:16 to 2:49 a.m. EDT. |
| November 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 9:37 to 11:22 p.m. EST | 9:10 to 11:43 p.m. EST. |
| December 15, 2026, Jupiter in Leo | 7:45 to 9:30 p.m. EST | 7:12 to 9:45 p.m. EST. |
| January 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 5:35 to 7:19 p.m. EST | 5:11 to 7:43 p.m. EST. |
| February 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 3:15 to 4:57 p.m. EST | 3:09 to 5:41 p.m. EST. |
| March 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 2:10 to 3:51 p.m. EDT | 2:19 to 4:51 p.m. EDT. |
| April 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 12:02 to 1:43 p.m. EDT | 12:17 to 2:49 p.m. EDT. |
| May 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 10:11 to 11:53 a.m. EDT | 10:19 a.m. to 12:51 p.m. EDT. |
| June 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 8:28 to 10:11 a.m. EDT | 8:17 to 10:49 a.m. EDT. |
| July 15, 2027, Jupiter in Leo | 6:55 to 8:41 a.m. EDT | 6:19 to 8:52 a.m. EDT. |
The window slides close to two hours earlier each month. That is the Sun moving on while Jupiter stays close to one spot. Between two dates in the table, the times fall in between.
Look at July 2026. Jupiter had just entered Leo and sat near 3 degrees of the sign. The two methods then have almost no overlap: 4:58 to 6:35 a.m. for Placidus, 6:18 to 8:51 a.m. for whole sign houses. A baby born at 7 a.m. on July 15, 2026, in New York has Jupiter in the 1st house in one app and the 12th in the other. That is the degree rule from the table above.
By June 2027, Jupiter sits near 22 degrees of Leo. The two windows now almost match.
These are clock times, not Sun time. In New York the two differ by up to about 20 minutes over the year, plus one hour in summer. Chicago and Los Angeles have their own windows. Your chart app will work them out from your birth place.
The hospital clock does matter in a single year
Over decades, the hospital clock cancels out. Inside one year, it does not. When the Jupiter window falls on the busy morning hours, more babies get it. When it falls at 3 a.m., fewer do.
We ran the count for every US birth day of 2026 and 2027, with real 2024 birth hours.
| Month of birth | Placidus 1st house, real US hours | Whole sign 1st house, real US hours. |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 | 8.5 percent | 12.6 percent. |
| May 2026 | 8.7 percent | 12.5 percent. |
| July 2026 | 5.2 percent | 11.9 percent. |
| September 2026 | 5.3 percent | 7.6 percent. |
| November 2026 | 6.4 percent | 9.0 percent. |
| January 2027 | 7.4 percent | 10.5 percent. |
| April 2027 | 9.2 percent | 12.8 percent. |
| June 2027 | 9.2 percent | 13.1 percent. |
A US baby born in June 2027 is about 1.8 times as likely to have a Placidus 1st house Jupiter as one born in September 2026. In New York, the window fell between 8:30 and 10 a.m. in mid June 2027, and between 2 and 3:40 a.m. in mid September 2026.
Look at July 2026 again. Placidus gives 5.2 percent, but whole sign houses give 11.9 percent. The whole sign window sat on the 8 a.m. rush, while the Placidus window sat around dawn.
What the old texts say about Jupiter rising
The Greek writers called the rising point the Horoskopos, the hour marker. It gave the whole chart its name. A planet near it was a planet near the start of life.
Ptolemy, in his Tetrabiblos of about 150 AD, drew that first place with care. When he judged the length of life, he let it begin 5 degrees above the eastern edge and run 25 degrees below it. So his first place already took in a Jupiter that had just risen, a little like whole sign houses do.
Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies of the 2nd century, read Jupiter in the Horoskopos as a mark of good fortune. He wrote of rank, wealth and the favor of powerful people.
The Greek scheme of joys, the house where each planet was glad to be, did not put Jupiter in the 1st. Jupiter’s joy is the 11th house, the house of friends and good spirit. Mercury is the planet whose joy is the 1st. Chris Brennan sets out the scheme in his book Hellenistic Astrology, from 2017.
Lilly’s points, and a gap of two hours
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology of 1647, gave points for where a planet stood. A planet in the 1st house gained 5. A planet in the 12th house lost 5.
That makes the house line a cliff. A Jupiter about to rise scored plus 5. The same Jupiter, a couple of hours after it rose, scored minus 5. Lilly drew his houses by the Regiomontanus method. Like Placidus, it starts the 1st house at the rising point, so for him the eastern edge was the line that counted.
Whole sign houses erase that cliff. Half of their 1st house Jupiters would sit in Lilly’s 12th house. Which reading you trust starts with which house method you use.
What modern writers add
The modern reading moved Jupiter from luck to growth. Stephen Arroyo and Robert Hand read Jupiter as the urge to grow, to trust, and to find a wider meaning. In Liz Greene’s reading, Jupiter is faith in life, with the risk of taking on more than you can hold.
Put that urge in the 1st house and it shows up in the way you meet the world. Here is how the modern books describe it. We give it as the tradition gives it, not as a forecast.
A big first step. The 1st house is the house of starts. Jupiter there wants to start large, with hope set before the plan.
A warm front door. People read a 1st house Jupiter as open, easy and glad to see them. The old books even gave it a large, upright frame.
Too much of a good thing. Jupiter swells what it touches. In the 1st house that can mean promising more than you can deliver, or doing too much of what feels good.
A teacher’s stance. Jupiter rules long trips, study and belief. With it at the door, people come to you for a wide view.
Growth is not the same as luck. In the modern reading, the planet widens the door, and you still have to walk through.
Is your Jupiter in the 1st house? Check three things
First, find a birth time you can trust. The window for Jupiter in the 1st house lasts one and a half to two and a half hours. A time off by an hour can move Jupiter to the 12th or the 2nd house. Use the time on your long form birth record, not a family memory.
Second, find out which house method your app uses. Most US apps use Placidus. Some astrologers prefer whole sign houses. The two agree only about half the time on this placement.
Third, look at Jupiter’s degree. Past 20 degrees of its sign, both methods nearly always agree. Under 5 degrees, a Placidus 1st house Jupiter is almost always a whole sign 2nd house Jupiter. That house reads very differently, as our guide to Jupiter in the 2nd house shows, where the same appetite for more is spent on money and self worth.
How we counted
We want you to be able to check each number, so here is the full method.
Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau, weighted by head count. We grouped the counties into 303 cells, each with its own time zone rules.
Dates: every day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the official time zone rules, summer time included.
Birth hours: the CDC natality file 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. We used the 2024 pattern for every year. Past decades had fewer planned births, but over the long run Jupiter cancels out that pattern anyway.
Jupiter: the Swiss Ephemeris, built in Moshier mode, at its place along the zodiac. We compare that place with the house lines, as chart apps do.
Route one: an exact sum. For each day and each place, we solved for the start and end of the Jupiter window on the clock. Then we added up the births that fall inside it. We checked that rule against 20,000 charts built by the Swiss Ephemeris, with no mismatch.
Route two: 3 million charts drawn at random with a fixed seed, half on an even clock and half on real hours, each built with the Swiss Ephemeris. It gave 8.31 and 8.22 percent under Placidus, against 8.30 and 8.21 for route one. It gave 8.53 and 8.52 percent under whole sign houses, against 8.53 for route one. It gave 50.5 percent overlap between the two methods. The monthly values for September 2026 and June 2027 matched too.
The long run: we checked the Placidus and whole sign values over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402, each day, at US latitudes. Full laps matter. A window that stops part way through a lap gives extra weight to the signs Jupiter was in at the end.
Questions people ask
What does Jupiter in the 1st house mean in plain words?
Under Placidus houses, Jupiter sat just below the eastern edge of the sky at your birth and rose within the next two hours or so. Under whole sign houses, Jupiter shares the sign of your ascendant. The tradition reads it as growth and warmth in the way you meet the world.
How common is Jupiter in the 1st house?
About one US birth in twelve. From 1940 to 2030 we found 8.21 percent under Placidus with real US birth hours, and 8.53 percent under whole sign houses.
Why does one app put my Jupiter in the 1st house and another in the 12th or 2nd?
The two apps use different house methods. Only half of Placidus 1st house Jupiters are also whole sign 1st house Jupiters. The rest move to the 2nd house. Going the other way, 47.9 percent of whole sign 1st house Jupiters sit in the Placidus 12th.
Is Jupiter in the 1st house the same as Jupiter rising?
Close, but not quite. Under Placidus, a 1st house Jupiter is about to rise. A Jupiter that rose a short while ago is in the 12th house. Ptolemy’s first place took in 5 degrees above the edge, so he counted both.
What time of day gives Jupiter in the 1st house in 2026 and 2027?
It moves close to two hours earlier each month. In New York on October 15, 2026, the Placidus window was 12:25 to 2:08 a.m. EDT. On June 15, 2027, it is 8:28 to 10:11 a.m. EDT.
Is Jupiter strong in the 1st house?
William Lilly gave any planet in the 1st house 5 points, and took 5 away in the 12th. Valens read Jupiter at the rising point as good fortune. The Greek joy of Jupiter is the 11th house, not the 1st.
