1st House Astrology: The Room Everyone Sees First

Think of a birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life. The planets are the furniture inside them. The first house is the room by the front door. It is the room everyone sees first.

It is also the one room your birth time decides on its own. Get the hour wrong and this room changes. We ran sixty years of US births to measure how often that happens, and the answer is below.

Inside this house, Mercury in the 1st house is one of the sharpest cases: thinking meeting the body and the first impression you make.

What the 1st house rules, in plain words

The 1st house rules four things. Your body. Your looks and style. Your manner, meaning the way you come across. And every fresh start you make.

That list is old. In the second century AD, the Greek astrologer Claudius Ptolemy tied this part of the chart to the body and to life itself in his book Tetrabiblos. William Lilly, writing in London in 1647, opened Christian Astrology with the same idea. He gave the first house the head, the face, and what he called the shape and stature of the body.

Venus in the first house shows what happens when a single planet takes the self as its subject.

Here is what belongs in the room, and what does not.

The 1st house coversIt does not cover
Your physical body and healthYour daily work and routine (6th house)
Your face, build and styleYour money and what you own (2nd house)
The first impression you makeYour marriage and close partners (7th house)
How you start thingsYour job title and public rank (10th house)
Your name and how you are knownYour private inner life (12th house)

The 1st house is the room you live in. The others are rooms you visit. That is why astrologers read it first.

Your 1st house is not your rising sign, and the gap matters

This is the mix-up we get asked about most. The two words point at one thing from two sides.

Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is a sign. It has a name, such as Leo or Pisces.

When the planet standing in that room is Saturn, the first read strangers take shifts towards caution, and we cover Saturn in the first house in its own guide.

Your 1st house is a place in the chart. It is the room that sign opens. The sign tells you the style of the room. The house tells you what is in it.

Of the placements that land here, Mars in the 1st house is the one that puts the appetite and anger squarely into the body and the first impression you make.

Put it this way. The rising sign is the paint on the walls. The 1st house is the space inside, with whatever furniture happens to sit there. Two people can both have Leo rising. One has Mars in that room. One has nothing in it at all. Same paint, very different room.

If you want the sign side of the story, read our guide to what your rising sign means. This page stays on the room.

The Greeks named this house after a clock

The Hellenistic astrologers were the Greek-speaking writers who shaped Western astrology between roughly 100 BC and 600 AD. They called the 1st house the Horoskopos. The word means the one that watches the hour.

One concrete case is Jupiter in the first house, where the self becomes the whole question.

That name is not decoration. It is a warning. The Greeks knew this house hangs on the clock, and they said so in the label. Vettius Valens, who wrote his Anthologies in the second century AD, called it the helm of the chart, the point from which the rest is steered.

The modern historian Chris Brennan traces that word back through the Greek sources in his work on Hellenistic astrology. Demetra George does the same in her books on ancient technique. Both agree on one point. Without a birth time, there is no Horoskopos, and with no Horoskopos there are no houses in the chart at all.

We counted. Here is what sits in the 1st house

Most articles on this house tell you what a planet there means. Almost none tell you how common it is. So we measured it.

How we counted. We took every day of US births from 1950 to 2009. Each birth counts by where people live and by the real hours babies are born, from CDC birth records. We used the whole sign house system, the oldest of the house systems, where each room is exactly one zodiac sign. We placed ten bodies: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Positions come from Swiss Ephemeris, and a second engine, astronomy-engine, gave the same figures.

What is in the 1st houseShare of charts
Nothing at all45.73%
One body33.00%
Two bodies14.23%
Three or more7.04%

Three or more bodies in one room is called a stellium. It happens in the 1st house in about one chart in fourteen. If you have one, our guide to what a stellium does goes further.

Which body turns up there most? Pluto, in 10.20% of charts. Then Uranus at 8.88% and Neptune at 8.80%. The Sun sits there in only 7.42%, the lowest of the ten, because it needs a birth around dawn, and fewer US babies arrive in those hours.

Pluto leads for a plain reason. Between 1950 and 2010 it crawled through Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Those are five of the six signs that rise most often. The next table explains why.

Some signs rise far more often than others

Ask most people and they will guess each sign rises one twelfth of the time, so 8.33% each. It is not close to true.

Signs do not climb over the horizon at the same speed. Some take over two hours to rise. Others clear the horizon in barely an hour. The slow ones catch far more births.

Rising signShare of US births
Leo10.58%
Virgo10.41%
Libra10.37%
Scorpio10.30%
Cancer9.93%
Sagittarius9.68%
Gemini8.16%
Capricorn7.92%
Taurus6.21%
Aquarius6.13%
Aries5.16%
Pisces5.16%

Leo rising is about twice as common as Aries or Pisces rising. So an Aries 1st house really is rare, and a Leo one really is not. Nobody publishes this, and it changes how you read a chart.

One caveat. These shares are for US births. Move toward the equator and the gaps shrink. Move farther north and they grow.

One hour of error, and the room moves

Here is the part that should worry you if your birth time is a guess.

We took the same charts and moved each birth time earlier and later by a set amount. Then we asked whether the 1st house could differ either way.

Birth time uncertain by1st house sign could differ1st house contents could differ
4 minutes either way6.7%5.1%
15 minutes either way25.0%19.1%
30 minutes either way50.0%38.1%
1 hour either way89.1%69.9%

Half an hour of doubt either way is already a coin toss. A full hour either way, and the sign could differ in nearly nine charts in ten. And if you keep the moment but move the birth to another US town, the 1st house sign differs in 52.3% of cases.

A worked example. Take a chart cast for New York on 16 May 1929 at 20:00 UTC. The ascendant falls at 7°58′ Libra. The 1st house is Libra, and not one of the ten bodies sits in it.

Now run the same day at 22:00 UTC. The ascendant is 1°41′ Scorpio. Every room has slid. The Sun moves from the 8th house to the 7th. The Moon moves from the 12th to the 11th. Pluto moves from the 10th to the 9th. Two hours of doubt rewrote the whole chart.

So chase the exact minute. A birth certificate, a hospital record, or a parent with a good memory beats any guess.

An empty 1st house is the normal case

Nearly half of all charts have nothing in this room. That is 45.73% by our count, and it puts the 1st house right in line with its neighbours. The 2nd house is empty in 46.65% of charts, the 7th in 48.25%, the 9th in 46.82%.

An empty room is not a missing life area. You still have a body, a face and a way of walking into a room. It means one thing only: no planet is camped there, so nothing is shouting.

Read an empty 1st house in two steps. First, look at the sign on the room, because that sign sets the tone by itself. Second, find the planet that rules that sign and see where it lives. Astrologers call that planet the chart ruler. If Aries is rising, the ruler is Mars, and wherever Mars sits is where your self-presentation gets its instructions.

A chart point for untamed appetite lands in this room for some readers, and Black Moon Lilith in the first house writes that refusal straight into the body and the first impression.

Robert Hand made this point clearly in his work on chart reading. The house holds the question. The ruler holds the answer.

Planets in the 1st house, one at a time

A planet here is worn on the outside. It shows in your face, your voice and your first thirty seconds in a room.

Body in the 1st houseWhat it puts on the surface
SunVisible presence, a need to be seen as yourself
MoonFeelings read straight off your face
MercuryQuick speech, a restless look, youthful manner
VenusCharm, an eye for looks, a soft first impression
MarsDirectness, physical drive, a sharp edge
JupiterBig manner, warmth, a body that expands
SaturnReserve, a serious face, slow warmth
UranusOdd angles, a look people do not forget
NeptuneSoft outlines, hard to pin down
PlutoIntensity, a gaze people feel

Two guides go deeper on the two most asked about: the Sun in the 1st house and the Moon in the 1st house.

Liz Greene, whose work joined astrology to depth psychology, reads a hard planet here with care. Saturn in the 1st is not a curse on your looks. It is a person who took longer to feel at ease in their own skin, and who grows into it with age.

The room across the hall

The 1st house faces the 7th. They sit opposite each other on the wheel, and they work as a pair. The 1st is you. The 7th is the other person: the partner, and also the open rival.

Lilly was blunt about this in 1647. In a legal case, he read the asker in the 1st house and the opponent in the 7th. Same axis, two ends. Our guide to the 7th house and partnership reads it from the other side.

When you feel pushed into a role by someone else, you are watching this axis move.

Dated transits crossing a 1st house now

A transit is a planet in today’s sky crossing a room in your birth chart. The slow planets stay for years. These dates are exact, and you can check them.

If your 1st house isWhat is crossing itSince or from
AriesNeptune26 January 2026
GeminiUranus26 April 2026
TaurusSaturn13 April 2028
CancerUranus22 May 2033

Neptune in the 1st blurs the outline others see. Uranus there breaks a look or a name and builds a new one. Saturn there tightens the frame, and asks you to earn the face you show.

Find your own 1st house in three steps

You need three facts: the date, the exact time, and the town.

  1. Get your birth time to the minute. Your birth certificate is the best source.
  2. Cast the chart and read the ascendant. The sign there is your 1st house.
  3. List every body in that sign. Those are your 1st house planets.

One trap. Chart software offers several ways to slice the twelve rooms. We used the whole sign system, where each room is one full sign. Placidus, the common default, cuts the rooms at uneven widths. A planet can sit in your 1st house under one system and your 12th under the other. Pick one system and stay with it.

Questions people ask about the 1st house

How do I find out my 1st house in astrology?

Cast your birth chart with your exact birth time and town. The sign on the ascendant is your 1st house under the whole sign system. Any planet in that sign is in your 1st house.

Is an empty 1st house bad?

No. It happens in 45.73% of the US birth charts we measured, so it is close to the normal case. Read the sign on the room, then follow the planet that rules that sign.

Which planet is not good in the 1st house?

Traditional astrology treats Saturn and Mars as the hard ones here. Lilly called them the infortunes. Modern readers treat them as demanding rather than bad: Saturn asks for patience with your own image, Mars for control of your temper.

What is the difference between the 1st house and the rising sign?

The rising sign is a zodiac sign. The 1st house is a place in the chart that the rising sign opens. The sign gives the room its style. The house holds whatever planets fall there.

What is the most powerful house in the birth chart?

The Hellenistic writers gave that rank to the 1st. Valens called it the helm of the chart. It carries the body and the life force, and it sets where all eleven other rooms begin.

How many planets are usually in the 1st house?

One, or none. Among US births from 1950 to 2009, 45.73% held nothing and 33.00% held exactly one body. Two or more is the minority at 21.27%.

Does my 1st house change during my life?

The sign never moves. It was fixed by the minute of your birth. What moves is the traffic through it: transiting planets cross the room for months or years at a time.

See your own first house

Reading about this room is one thing. Seeing yours is another. Astrovision builds your full birth chart from your date, time and town, and delivers it two ways: a written guide you can read, and a personal podcast you can listen to. Your 1st house gets named, with whatever sits in it.
