Libra Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility joins two signs set two apart, an angle called a sextile. In Libra, Venus is at home. In Sagittarius, she is a guest in the house of Jupiter, with no major rank of her own. Between the two signs sits Scorpio, and that sign turns out to shape the Sun signs of this couple.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about the two signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Venus at home, Venus as Jupiter’s guest
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. A planet with none of these ranks in a sign is called peregrine, which means a wanderer.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Ruler of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Venus | Home, or domicile. | Venus herself. |
| Sagittarius Venus | Peregrine, no major rank. | Jupiter. |
Ptolemy hands out the homes in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos. Venus gets Libra and Taurus. Jupiter gets Sagittarius and Pisces. Venus holds a few degrees of Sagittarius in the old tables of terms, a minor rank. She has no home, exaltation, fall or detriment there.
The tradition calls Venus and Jupiter the two benefics, the planets that bring good things. So one partner holds Venus in her own sign. The other holds her in the sign of her fellow benefic. A guest in a friendly house is still a guest, but not one in trouble.
A Libra Venus loves through balance, beauty and fair terms. Our page on Venus in Libra covers that placement in full. A Sagittarius Venus loves through freedom, honesty and shared adventure. Our page on Venus in Sagittarius explains it in detail.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Libra | 8.32 percent | Sixth of twelve. |
| Venus in Sagittarius | 8.23 percent | Ninth of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Libra and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.37 percent, or about one couple in 73. That ranks 45th of the 78 Venus pairs, and seventh of the twelve sextile pairs.
A sextile Ptolemy counted
Libra and Sagittarius sit two signs apart, 60 degrees on the wheel. That is a sextile. Ptolemy lists it among the four true aspects in chapter 13, with the opposition, the trine and the square. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both link signs of the same kind. Libra and Sagittarius are both masculine signs, in his terms, so the link holds.
Libra is air and Sagittarius is fire. Many astrologers say that air feeds fire. Libra is cardinal and starts things. Sagittarius is mutable and adapts as it goes.
Ptolemy’s mirror rules, read two ways
Ptolemy also linked signs that mirror each other. Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” They sit at equal distance from an equinox, so they rise over the horizon in equal time. Chapter 15 names signs that “behold” each other and are of equal power. They sit at equal distance from a solstice, so the Sun gives them days of equal length.
Each rule can be read in two ways. The first reading uses whole signs. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists those pairs in his notes. The second reading uses exact degrees, with the mirror set on 0 degrees Libra or 0 degrees Cancer. William Lilly called such mirror points antiscia and contra-antiscia.
| Rule and reading | Libra’s partner | Sagittarius’s partner. |
|---|---|---|
| Command and obey, whole signs, note 80 | None, Libra is left out | Leo, which commands Sagittarius. |
| Command and obey, exact degrees | Virgo, across the equinox | Cancer, across the equinox. |
| Behold, whole signs, note 83 | Aries | Aquarius. |
| Behold, exact degrees | Pisces, across 0 degrees Cancer | Capricorn, across 0 degrees Cancer. |
Neither sign names the other on any line. We checked the degrees too. No couple has its two Venuses on mirror points, even at a 3 degree margin. So the sextile is the only classical link between these two Venuses. By Ptolemy’s rules, that is enough.
The sextile in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses two signs apart can be anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. The exact sextile is 60. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. At an 8 degree orb, 46.28 percent of these couples come that close. That value is almost the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple.
The far edge tells more. At the same orb, 3.62 percent of these couples form a square by degree. Picture Venus at 1 degree Libra and at 29 degrees Sagittarius. The gap is 88 degrees, close to a right angle. By sign, that couple is a sextile. In the sky, it is a square.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Libra Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.99 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Virgo | 30.08 percent | The largest group. |
| Libra | 23.52 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Scorpio | 28.37 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Sagittarius | 9.05 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Sagittarius Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra | 9.48 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Scorpio | 29.18 percent | The largest group. |
| Sagittarius | 23.50 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Capricorn | 28.58 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Aquarius | 9.27 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
Scorpio holds a large share on both sides. More than one Libra Venus in four is a Scorpio Sun. So is more than one Sagittarius Venus in four. At least one partner is a Scorpio Sun in 49.3 percent of these couples, close to half.
When the Suns match, they are Scorpio two times in three
Three Sun signs show up in both lists: Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. So these partners share a Sun sign in 12.63 percent of couples, about one in eight. Here is how that splits.
| Shared Sun sign | Share of these couples | Part of all shared Suns. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio | 8.28 percent | About two in three. |
| Libra | 2.23 percent | About one in six. |
| Sagittarius | 2.13 percent | About one in six. |
So two Scorpio Suns are more likely than two Libra Suns and two Sagittarius Suns put together. The Sun sign that matches is most often the one between the two Venus signs, not either of them.
Now combine two partners in every way. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Libra with a Scorpio counts once.
| Sun pair | Share of these couples | Rank. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra and Scorpio | 9.55 percent | First, about one couple in ten. |
| Scorpio and Sagittarius | 9.31 percent | Second. |
| Virgo and Scorpio | 8.78 percent | Third. |
| Virgo and Capricorn | 8.60 percent | Fourth. |
| Scorpio and Scorpio | 8.28 percent | Fifth. |
| Scorpio and Capricorn | 8.11 percent | Sixth. |
Scorpio sits in five of the top six. Even so, the top pair covers only one couple in ten. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Sextile | 25.0 percent | Two signs apart, like the Venuses. |
| Semi-sextile | 24.3 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Square | 19.0 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Trine | 12.9 percent | Suns in easy step. |
| Same sign | 12.6 percent | Both Suns in one sign. |
| Quincunx | 5.4 percent | Five signs apart, an awkward angle. |
| Opposition | 0.8 percent | Only a Leo Sun with an Aquarius Sun. |
The Suns spread out more than the Venuses do. Only one couple in four has Suns at the same angle as their Venuses.
Libra and Sagittarius by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Libra Sun and a Sagittarius Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not always. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments, across all signs. A Libra Sun can hold Venus in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. Our page on Libra and Sagittarius compatibility by Sun sign reads the Sun pair on its own terms.
Turn it around. In 41.49 percent of Libra Venus and Sagittarius Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 52nd of the 78 pairs. In 5.53 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both like warmth, good talk and a sense of fair play. Both rulers are benefics.
- Pace. The Libra Venus plans the date. The Sagittarius Venus wants to change it on the way.
- Style. Libra values tact. Sagittarius values candor, even when it stings.
- The sore spot. The Libra Venus wants a partner close by. The Sagittarius Venus needs room to roam.
A simple habit helps. Plan one trip or new outing together each month, so freedom and partnership share a date. Let the Sagittarius partner say hard things kindly. Let the Libra partner say what they want before weighing every side.
Read in the old way, air gives fire room to burn, and fire gives air a reason to move. The sextile is a friendly link, not a strong one. It asks both partners to act on it.
The same signs through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Libra Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. A Sagittarius Venus meets its own sign in Sagittarius Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility. A Libra Venus meets another air sign in Libra Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility.
Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a sextile is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Libra and Venus in Sagittarius compatible?
They form a sextile, an angle Ptolemy counted as harmonious. Venus is at home in Libra and peregrine in Sagittarius, the house of Jupiter. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Libra Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?
About one couple in 73, or 1.37 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 45th of the 78 Venus pairs.
What Sun signs are likeliest for this couple?
A Libra Sun and a Scorpio Sun, in 9.55 percent of these couples. When the two Suns match, about two times in three both are Scorpio.
Do Libra and Sagittarius behold each other in Ptolemy?
No, on either reading. By whole signs, Robbins’s note 83 pairs Libra with Aries and Sagittarius with Aquarius. By exact degrees, Libra mirrors Pisces and Sagittarius mirrors Capricorn.
Is Venus weak in Sagittarius?
Not weak, but a guest. She has no major rank there, only a few degrees by term. The sign belongs to Jupiter, the other benefic.
