Scorpio and Sagittarius Compatibility: The Scorpion’s Stars Belong to Sagittarius

Scorpio and Sagittarius compatibility is a question about neighbors. The two signs sit side by side on the zodiac wheel, and their birthdays can fall a single day apart. We asked three plain questions about the pair. How many US couples are a Scorpio and a Sagittarius? Did real marriages favor them? And what does the night sky say about the border between them?

The first answer is about 1 random US couple in 77. The second is no: in 10.3 million British marriages, the pair sat close to chance. The third answer is the surprise. No Scorpio is born with the Sun in front of the stars of the Scorpion. About 1 Sagittarius in 5 is. The Scorpion’s brightest star, Antares, now sits at 10 degrees of the sign Sagittarius. In the oldest rule book we have, that star acts like Mars with a touch of Jupiter. Mars rules Scorpio. Jupiter rules Sagittarius.

This guide shows how we got each answer, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The short answer, in six lines

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is a Scorpio and Sagittarius couple?About 1 random US couple in 77, or 1.30 percent.
What would an even split of signs give?1 couple in 72, or 1.39 percent.
Did real marriages favor the pair? No: 0.4 percent over chance, inside the noise.
How far apart are the signs? One sign, or 30 degrees: neighbors.
How many Scorpios are born under the Scorpion’s stars?None of them, 0 percent.
How many Sagittarians are born under the Scorpion’s stars?About 1 in 5, or 20 percent.

How many couples are Scorpio and Sagittarius?

Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Scorpio season runs from about October 23 to November 21. Sagittarius season runs from about November 22 to December 21. The exact hour moves a little each year. In 2026, the Sun enters Scorpio on October 23 at 5:38 a.m. and Sagittarius on November 22 at 2:23 a.m., New York time. Our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.

The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things set the count. The first is how long the Sun stays in the sign. The second is how many babies are born per day at that time of year. Both work against this pair. The Sun moves fast in late fall, since Earth nears its closest point to the Sun in early January. And US births slow down in late fall, with a dip around Thanksgiving.

If all twelve signs were equal8.33 percent8.33 percent1.39 percent, or 1 in 72.

Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Scorpio woman with a Sagittarius man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Scorpio share times the Sagittarius share.

Sagittarius is the third rarest Sun sign in US births, ahead of only Capricorn and Aquarius. Scorpio sits in the lower half too. So the pair lands below the even rate, in 53rd place out of 78 possible pairs. That place comes from the calendar and the birth rate, not from the stars.

How the neighbor pairs compare

Twelve pairs of signs sit side by side on the wheel. Here is where this one falls among them.

What ten million marriages showed

A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.

In 2007, the sociologist David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, looked at the married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain thing. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict? Do others marry less?

His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version of it in March 2008.

We pulled the Scorpio and Sagittarius cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you would get if people chose partners with no regard to sign.

Couples in the 2001 census, cleanedFoundExpected by chanceGap.
Scorpio wife, Sagittarius husband56,311 couples55,907 couples404 couples over.
Sagittarius wife, Scorpio husband55,906 couples55,859 couples47 couples over.
Both ways together112,217 couples111,766 couples0.4 percent over.

Is that surplus a sign of fate? Voas gives the scale. With 9.5 million couples spread over 144 cells, a cell can drift by up to 450 couples by chance alone. The first cell comes near that edge but stays inside it. The second cell is off by 47 couples out of fifty-six thousand. Out of 66 pairs of different signs, this one ranks ninth for surplus, which is what you would expect from a coin toss. The honest reading is simple. Scorpios and Sagittarians marry each other at about the rate the calendar sets.

Neighbors that cannot see each other

Count from Scorpio to Sagittarius and you move one sign, or 30 degrees. Ptolemy, the Greek writer of the second century, set out the links between signs in his book, the Tetrabiblos. He names four links that count: the sextile, the square, the trine and the opposition. Two signs side by side have none of them.

So Ptolemy puts them in a last group, in chapter 16. He calls such signs “disjunct” and “alien.” Signs one apart, he says, are turned away from each other. Later writers call this state aversion, from a Latin word for turning away. Chris Brennan explains it in his book Hellenistic Astrology. Signs in aversion do not deal with each other directly. That is a label for the geometry, not a verdict on a couple.

Modern astrologers added a small link for signs one apart. They call it the semi-sextile, half of a sextile. It is a minor aspect, one that carries less weight than the main four.

How many couples have a true semi-sextile?

By sign, every pair is one sign apart. By degree, the two Suns can sit anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The semi-sextile is exact at 30 degrees, right in the middle.

Astrologers allow a margin, called an orb, around the exact angle. Across our sign pairs, the shares come out the same each time. About 19 percent of pairs fall within 3 degrees of the exact angle. About 36 percent fall within 6 degrees. About 46 percent fall within 8 degrees, and about 56 percent within 10 degrees.

A neighbor pair has one twist of its own. A Scorpio born at the very end of the sign and a Sagittarius born at the very start can have Suns almost on top of each other. We measured it on US births. About 3.4 percent of Scorpio and Sagittarius couples have Suns within 8 degrees of each other, across the border. That is about 1 couple in 30. By degree, those two Suns form a near conjunction, the closest link there is.

The Scorpion’s stars belong to Sagittarius

Here is the part that sets this pair apart. The names of the signs come from star groups, called constellations. But the signs are not the constellations. The signs used in Western astrology are tied to the seasons. Scorpio is the second 30 degree slice after the fall equinox. Astrologers call this the tropical zodiac.

The star groups have slid away from those slices. Earth wobbles on its axis like a slow top, and the equinox drifts west against the stars. The drift is about 1 degree every 72 years. Over two thousand years it adds up to almost a full sign. Our guide to the tropical and sidereal zodiac explains the two ways to deal with it.

For most signs, the drift is a small shift. For this pair, it creates a swap. We checked which star group stood behind the Sun for every hour of Scorpio and Sagittarius season, from 2000 to 2014. We used the official star group borders, set by astronomers in 1930. Then we weighted each hour by the US births on that day.

Scorpius, the ScorpionNone, 0 percent20 percent of them.
Ophiuchus, the Serpent BearerNone, 0 percent63 percent of them.
Sagittarius, the ArcherNone, 0 percent13 percent of them.

Read the table from the top. A Scorpio is born with the Sun in front of the Virgin or the Scales. Not one is born under the Scorpion. A Sagittarius is born under the Scorpion one time in five, and under the Archer only about one time in eight.

A week in front of the Scorpion

The Scorpion star group is narrow along the Sun’s path. In 2026, the Sun crosses in front of it from November 23 at 12:30 p.m. to November 30 at 12:40 a.m., New York time. That is less than seven days. Then the Sun moves into Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, for about 18 days. It reaches the Archer’s stars only on December 18, at 8:10 a.m. New York time.

So the Scorpion’s week falls in the first days of Sagittarius season. It lines up with Thanksgiving week. US births drop by about 9 percent a day that week, compared with the rest of November. That is why the share is 20 percent of births, while the Scorpion covers 22 percent of the hours in the sign.

Is Ophiuchus a thirteenth sign?

No. Ophiuchus is a real star group, and the Sun does pass in front of it. But the tropical signs never tracked the star groups. They split the year of seasons into twelve equal parts. Our zodiac signs guide covers the question in full. For this pair, Ophiuchus explains one thing only: why most Sagittarians are born with neither the Scorpion nor the Archer behind the Sun.

Antares, a Mars star with a touch of Jupiter

The Scorpion has one star that everyone can find. It is Antares, a red giant in the heart of the figure. Its name means “rival of Mars,” for its red color. It is one of the brightest stars in the summer sky.

We worked out where Antares falls in the tropical zodiac. In 2000, it sat at 9 degrees 45 minutes of Sagittarius. In 2026, it sits at 10 degrees 8 minutes of Sagittarius. The Sun reaches that point each year around December 1 or 2. In 2026, that happens on December 2 at 2:37 a.m., New York time. Antares sits about 4.6 degrees south of the Sun’s path, so the Sun passes above it, not over it.

Farther along the same sign, at 27 degrees, lies the center of our galaxy, the thread of our page on Gemini and Sagittarius compatibility.

Ptolemy lists the nature of the bright stars in Book 1, chapter 9. For the body of the Scorpion, he writes this. The three stars there, “the middle one of which is tawny and rather bright and is called Antares,” act “the same as Mars and, in some degree, Jupiter.” For the Archer’s bow and hand, he gives the same two planets, Jupiter and Mars.

Mars rules Scorpio. Jupiter rules Sagittarius. So the brightest star of the Scorpion carries, in Ptolemy’s words, the natures of both rulers of this pair. And it now sits inside the sign of Sagittarius. It is a symbol, not a force. But few sign pairs have their two rulers written into a single star that stands on their border.

Mars and Jupiter, the two rulers

Each sign has a ruling planet, the planet said to be at home there. Ptolemy gives Scorpio to Mars and Sagittarius to Jupiter. Modern astrologers add Pluto to Scorpio as a second ruler, since its discovery in 1930.

The two old rulers are on opposite teams. The tradition splits the planets into a day team and a night team, called a sect. Jupiter works for the day team, led by the Sun. Mars works for the night team, led by the Moon. Ptolemy calls Jupiter a planet that does good and Mars one that does harm. Modern writers soften that. Robert Hand calls Jupiter the planet of growth and Mars the planet of drive and action.

Neither ruler has a major rank in the other’s sign. Mars is neither at home, raised up, nor weakened in Sagittarius. Jupiter is in the same spot in Scorpio. Each planet has only a small span of minor rank, called terms, in the other sign. So the tradition sees no strong tie between the two rulers, and no strong clash either.

How many have their ruler at home?

A planet is at home when it sits in the sign it rules. Our sign pages measured this share over long spans of time. About 14.21 percent of Scorpios have Mars in Scorpio. About 10.22 percent of Sagittarians have Jupiter in Sagittarius. So in most Scorpio and Sagittarius couples, neither partner has a ruler at home. Where Mars and Jupiter sit in each chart is part of the story the Sun signs leave out.

Each partner can carry the other’s sign

Mercury, the planet of thought and speech, never strays far from the Sun. From Earth, it stays within about 28 degrees of it. So for neighbor signs, Mercury crosses the border all the time.

Our Scorpio sign guide counts about 27 percent of Scorpios with Mercury in Sagittarius. Our Sagittarius sign guide counts about 20 percent of Sagittarians with Mercury in Scorpio. We checked both shares on our own run from 1600 to 2400, and they match.

So about a quarter of Scorpios think and speak in the style astrologers link to Sagittarius. About a fifth of Sagittarians do the reverse. For those couples, the partner’s sign is not foreign ground. It sits in their own chart.

What the pair means as a symbol

With the numbers set out, here is what astrologers read into the pair. Treat it as a way to talk, not a rule.

Scorpio is a water sign. In the old texts, water is cold and moist. Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, links water to feeling and to deep bonds. Liz Greene links water to what lies under the surface. Sagittarius is a fire sign, hot and dry. Arroyo links fire to drive, faith and a need to act on belief.

The two signs differ in mode as well. Ptolemy calls Scorpio a solid sign, one that falls in the middle of a season. Modern writers say fixed. Fixed signs are read as steady, loyal and slow to change course. He calls Sagittarius a two-bodied sign, one that falls at the end of a season. Modern writers say mutable. Mutable signs are read as flexible, restless and keen to move on.

The rulers add a layer. Mars stands for desire, courage and the will to act. Jupiter stands for faith, travel, teaching and wide views. Read together, the pair joins a partner who wants depth with one who wants range.

The same symbols name the friction points. A fixed water sign can want privacy and a close bond. A mutable fire sign can want space and frank talk. These are themes to talk about, not verdicts on a couple.

Look past the Sun signs

A Sun sign is one point in a chart. The Moon, Venus and Mars signs add a lot about daily life and love. Your Moon sign, the sign the Moon was in at birth, speaks to moods and needs. We cover Scorpio and Sagittarius Moon signs in a separate guide. Venus, the planet of love and taste, has its own page on Scorpio and Sagittarius Venus placements.

Sagittarius has another neighbor pair on the site. Our page on Libra and Sagittarius compatibility looks at a sextile ruled by Venus and Jupiter.

How we measured

You can redo every number on this page.

For birth shares, we used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked the pattern against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. We placed each birth day on the sky using the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side. The pair chance is two times the Scorpio share times the Sagittarius share. The rank compares all 78 pairs, the same sign pairs included.

The marriage counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, his cleaned version of census table C0792. Rows are wives and columns are husbands. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total.

For the star groups, we used two routes. Route one uses the open source Astronomy Engine library. For each hour, it finds the Sun’s place in the sky and looks up the star group with the official 1930 borders. Route two asks NASA’s JPL Horizons service for the same thing, hour by hour, for each year. Both routes then weight each hour by the births on that day. They agree to the hundredth of a percent: 20.27 and 20.26 percent of Sagittarians under the Scorpion. The place of Antares uses its standard star catalog position, turned into the zodiac of each date.

The Mercury check sampled the sky every six hours from 1600 to 2400. The quotes from Ptolemy come from the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 5 to 17, in the Robbins translation.

The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date, and many couples meet across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.

Questions people ask

Are Scorpio and Sagittarius compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Scorpio and Sagittarius couples within 0.4 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair joins a fixed water sign ruled by Mars with a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter.

What percentage of couples are Scorpio and Sagittarius?

About 1.30 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 77, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks 53rd of 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.

Is a Sagittarius born under the Scorpion constellation?

About 1 in 5 is. From 2000 to 2014, about 20 percent of US Sagittarius births had the Sun in front of the Scorpion’s stars. No Scorpio did. Most Sagittarians, about 63 percent, had the Sun in front of Ophiuchus.

Where is Antares in the zodiac?

At about 10 degrees of Sagittarius in 2026, in the tropical zodiac. The Sun reaches that point around December 1 or 2 each year. Ptolemy says Antares acts like Mars and, in some degree, Jupiter.

Do Scorpio and Sagittarius form an aspect?

Not in Ptolemy’s scheme. Signs one apart are in aversion, turned away from each other. Modern astrologers call the 30 degree link a semi-sextile, a minor aspect. With an 8 degree orb, about 46 percent of pairs have a true one.
