Mercury is in Libra right now. It came in on September 10, 2026, and it leaves on September 30 at 7:44 AM New York time. That is a short visit of just under 20 days. Next year will be very different. In 2027, the planet will stay in or near Libra for 67 days, because it will turn back in the sky.
That gap is the key to this placement. I counted every visit over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400. In 42.5 percent of years, Mercury loops backward in or around Libra. Those loop years hold 67.6 percent of all the time Mercury spends in the sign. So about two people in three with Mercury in Libra were born in a loop year.
This page shows how that works, which birth years are loop years, and who can hold this Mercury at all. Then it turns to what the old authors say about it. The method is at the end, so you can check each figure.
What Mercury and Libra each bring
In a birth chart, Mercury stands for how you think and how you talk. It rules speech, letters, trade and learning. The Greek author Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies, tied it to learning, letters and reason. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, gave it rule over the rational part of the soul.
Libra is the seventh sign, the sign of the scales. The Sun enters it at the start of fall, when day and night are equal. It is an air sign, one of the three signs of ideas and contact. Venus rules it. So a Libra Mercury thinks in pairs. It weighs one side, then the other, and it looks for the fair word.
Our guide to the Libra sign covers the sign itself. This page stays with the planet, and with the sky clock that decides who gets it.
Two kinds of Libra year
Mercury turns back three or four times a year. The word for this is retrograde. It means the planet seems to move backward against the stars for about three weeks. It does this each time it passes between Earth and the Sun. The point where it seems to stop and turn is called a station.
When a turn falls in Libra, or just next to it, the visit stretches. The planet crosses part of the sign two or three times. When no turn falls there, it runs straight through. So each year is one of two kinds, and they barely look alike.
| Kind of year | What the visit looks like, over 1600 to 2400. |
| Straight run, no loop | 460 years out of 800, or 57.5 percent of them. |
| Time in Libra in a straight year | From 17.0 to 20.6 days, with a median of 17.8 days. |
| Loop year | 340 years out of 800, or 42.5 percent of them. |
| First entry to last exit in a loop year | From 55 to 68 days, with a median of 67 days. |
| Days truly inside Libra in a loop year | From 19 to 68 days, with a median of 51 days. |
The median is the middle value: half the years fall below it, half above. So a loop year gives Libra about 51 days of Mercury. A straight year gives it about 18. That is close to three times as much.
A loop year can play out in two ways. In 111 years out of 800, the planet turned back and forward again without leaving Libra. It stayed about 67 days in one piece. In the other 229 loop years, the visit was split in two. In 109 of those, it slipped back into Virgo for a while. In 120, it ran on into Scorpio, turned back, and came home to Libra.
Why two in three were born in a loop year
Now put the two kinds of year side by side. Straight years are more common. But each one adds only about 18 days. Loop years are fewer, yet each one adds about 51 days. Here is the sum over the full 800 years.
| Kind of year | Total days with Mercury in Libra | Share of all that time. |
| Straight years, 460 of them | About 22.8 years in total | 32.4 percent of it. |
| Loop years, 340 of them | About 47.7 years in total | 67.6 percent of it. |
If births are spread evenly through time, then 67.6 percent of the people with this Mercury were born in a loop year. That is about two in three. The other one in three came from a straight year, with its short 18 day window.
Does this hold up over a shorter span? Yes. Here is the same count, split by span of years. The figure barely moves.
| Span of years | Share of years with a loop | Share of Libra time that falls in loop years. |
| 1600 to 2000 | 42.5 percent | 67.5 percent. |
| 2000 to 2400 | 42.5 percent | 67.7 percent. |
| 1900 to 2000 | 42.0 percent | 67.0 percent. |
| 2000 to 2100 | 43.0 percent | 67.9 percent. |
One real limit: births are not spread evenly. More babies are born in some months, and the world grew a lot. But Mercury in Libra always falls in the same season, late August to mid November. So the season effect is the same for both kinds of year. The two in three stands.
Three years on, four years off
Loop years do not fall at random. They come in runs. Mercury laps the Sun, as seen from Earth, 22 times in just under seven years. So its turns come back to nearly the same spot in the sky about every seven years.
Over the 800 years, the pattern was plain. Loop years came in runs of three, 96 times, or in runs of two, 26 times. Between them came runs of four straight years, 95 times, or three, 26 times. Three on, four off is the common beat.
Here are the loop years for births from 1950 to 2029. A loop year counts when the Libra visit holds a turn, or splits in two.
| Decade | Loop years for Mercury in Libra. |
| 1950s | 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1956. |
| 1960s | 1961, 1962, 1963, 1968 and 1969. |
| 1970s | 1974, 1975 and 1976. |
| 1980s | 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988 and 1989. |
| 1990s | 1994, 1995 and 1996. |
| 2000s | 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2009. |
| 2010s | 2014 and 2015. |
| 2020s | 2020, 2021, 2022, 2027, 2028 and 2029. |
If your birth year is on this list, and you were born between late August and mid November, your odds of having Mercury in Libra are high. If your year is not on the list, the window is short, about 17 to 20 days. You need your exact date to know.
Every Mercury in Libra from 2020 to 2031
Here is each visit in detail. Times are given in UTC, the clock of Greenwich, and in New York time. A turn at 1:00 AM UTC falls the evening before on the East Coast. So check the time zone before you compare with a birth time.
| Year | What Mercury did in and around Libra. |
| 2020, split loop | In on Sep 5 at 19:46 UTC, 3:46 PM New York. Out to Scorpio on Sep 27. Turned back on Oct 14 at 01:07 UTC, which is Oct 13 at 9:07 PM New York, at 11 degrees of Scorpio. Back in Libra on Oct 27, New York date. Turned forward on Nov 3 at 25 degrees of Libra. Out on Nov 10 at 4:54 PM New York. |
| 2021, loop in one piece | In on Aug 30 at 05:10 UTC, 1:10 AM New York. Turned back on Sep 27 at 25 degrees. Turned forward on Oct 18 at 10 degrees. Out on Nov 5 at 22:34 UTC, 6:34 PM New York. That is 67.7 days in the sign. |
| 2022, split loop | In on Aug 26 at 01:02 UTC, which is Aug 25 at 9:02 PM New York. Turned back on Sep 10 UTC, Sep 9 in New York, at 9 degrees. Back into Virgo on Sep 23. Turned forward on Oct 2 at 24 degrees of Virgo. Back in Libra on Oct 10. Out on Oct 29. |
| 2023 | Straight run. In on Oct 5 at 00:08 UTC, which is Oct 4 at 8:08 PM New York. Out on Oct 22. Just 17.3 days. |
| 2024 | Straight run from Sep 26 to Oct 13. Just 17.5 days. |
| 2025 | Straight run from Sep 18 to Oct 6. Just 18.3 days. |
| 2026 | Straight run. In on Sep 10 at 12:21 PM New York. Out on Sep 30 at 7:44 AM New York. Just 19.8 days. |
| 2027, split loop | In on Sep 3 at 7:36 AM New York. Out to Scorpio on Sep 27. Turns back on Oct 7 at 14:40 UTC, 10:40 AM New York, at 5 degrees of Scorpio. Back in Libra on Oct 16. Turns forward on Oct 28 at 19 degrees. Out on Nov 10 at 00:26 UTC, which is Nov 9 at 7:26 PM New York. |
| 2028, loop in one piece | In on Aug 27 at 9:07 AM New York. Turns back on Sep 19 at 12:30 PM New York, at 19 degrees. Turns forward on Oct 11 at 4 degrees. Out on Nov 2. That is 67.1 days in the sign. |
| 2029, split loop | In on Aug 27 at 02:23 UTC, which is Aug 26 at 10:23 PM New York. Turns back on Sep 2 at 2 degrees. Back into Virgo on Sep 8. Turns forward on Sep 25 UTC, which is Sep 24 at 10:02 PM New York, at 17 degrees of Virgo. Back in Libra on Oct 8. Out on Oct 26. |
| 2030 | Straight run from Oct 1 to Oct 18. Just 17.3 days. |
| 2031 | Straight run from Sep 23 to Oct 11. Just 17.7 days. |
Look at 2021 and 2023 side by side. In 2021, the sign held Mercury for 67.7 days. In 2023, it held it for 17.3 days. A child born in fall 2021 was close to four times as likely to get this Mercury as one born in fall 2023.
One more note on short stays. The shortest full crossing in 800 years took 17.0 days. But a split loop can leave a far shorter piece. The planet can touch the edge of the sign for 1.6 days, turn, and leave. That is a stay, but not a crossing.
Who is born with Mercury in Libra
Mercury never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, it keeps close to it, like a dog on a lead. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, put that lead at 27 degrees. Over the 800 years, the widest gap I found with Mercury in Libra was 27.35 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So with Mercury in Libra, your Sun can only be in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio.
| Sun sign at birth | Share of people with Mercury in Libra. |
| Sun in Libra | 50.2 percent of them. |
| Sun in Virgo | 35.0 percent of them. |
| Sun in Scorpio | 14.9 percent of them. |
| Any other Sun sign | None, it cannot happen. |
So half the people with this Mercury are not Libras. And the big second group is Virgo, the sign before. Why? With Mercury in Libra, it runs ahead of the Sun 61.9 percent of the time. It is then an evening star, seen after sunset, when it can be seen at all. When it runs ahead, the Sun is still behind it, back in Virgo.
Our page on Mercury in Aquarius found the same half share, with the lean going the other way. There, 34.9 percent of those people have a Pisces Sun, the sign after. Libra is the mirror image. Here, the lean is toward the sign before.
If you are a Libra Sun, the count runs the other way round. Mercury is in Libra for 53 in every 100 Libra Suns. For about one in three, it sits in Scorpio. The page on Mercury in Scorpio reached the same one in three from its own sample. The last 14 in every 100 have Mercury in Virgo.
For births from 1900 to 2100, this Mercury falls between August 24 and November 11. A birthday outside that band rules it out. Inside the band, you need the year, as the list of loop years shows.
How common is it overall?
Over the 800 years, Mercury spends 8.81 percent of all time in Libra. That is about 32.2 days a year on average. A fair share would be one in twelve, or 8.33 percent. The Sun spends 8.32 percent of the time in Libra. So Mercury in Libra is about six percent more common than a Libra Sun.
Our page on Mercury in Pisces ranks all twelve signs this way. Libra comes fourth, behind Sagittarius, Scorpio and Capricorn. The cause is Mercury’s own orbit. It is stretched, and its slow far end faces the Sagittarius part of the sky. So signs near that end get more of its time.
The loop rate climbs the same way. Libra loops in 42.5 percent of years. Its opposite sign, Aries, loops in only 34.5 percent. Our page on Mercury in Capricorn found 44 percent there. So the scales of Libra are not level with Aries. Libra gets more loops and more time.
Born with Mercury moving backward
Some people with this Mercury were born while it was retrograde. Of all the time Mercury spends in Libra, 18.9 percent is spent moving backward. Across all signs, pages on this site put the figure at about 19.2 percent. So Libra sits close to the norm, about one person in five.
Every one of those people was born in a loop year, of course. Within loop years alone, the backward share rises to about 28 percent. So if you were born in, say, 2021 or 2028, check the dates of the turn in the table above.
In the tradition, a retrograde Mercury looks back before it moves on. Lilly wrote that Mercury stays retrograde for about 24 days. Modern readers see a mind that reviews and revises. For a Libra Mercury, that fits: the scale gets weighed twice.
What the old authors say about this Mercury
Libra is not one of Mercury’s own signs. It rules Gemini and Virgo. It is strongest in Virgo, where it is both at home and exalted, which means honored. Our page on Mercury in Virgo covers that sign. Libra sits right after it.
Still, Mercury has a claim in Libra. The old authors split the signs into four groups of three, by element. Each group had a set of rulers called triplicity lords. Lilly, following Dorotheus, gives the air group to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. Libra is an air sign. So in a night chart, Mercury rules the element of Libra. A night chart is one where the Sun was below the horizon at birth. Robert Hand wrote a whole book on this split, called Night and Day.
Mercury also owns a short stretch inside the sign. Each sign was cut into five uneven slices, called terms or bounds. Lilly’s table gives Mercury the slice from 19 to 24 degrees of Libra. The older Egyptian table, used by Valens, gives it 6 to 14 degrees instead. So which degree your Mercury holds matters in the old reading.
Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology, explains how these rulers worked in practice. Demetra George covers the same tools in her books on ancient astrology. Neither makes Libra a weak sign for Mercury. It is a guest sign, with a few small rights.
Libra belongs to Venus, and Saturn is exalted there. Lilly reads Venus as the planet of taste and ease, and Saturn as the planet of rules and time. A Mercury in their sign works under both. It thinks with grace, and it thinks with a sense of fair rules. Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, ties the air signs to the wish to share ideas and to relate. Liz Greene links Libra to ideals, to how things ought to be.
Reading a Libra Mercury by year and Sun sign
These readings come from the tradition, not from science. Use them as a frame for your own chart.
If you were born in a loop year, your Mercury had a long stay in Libra. In the tradition, a long stay is a strong theme. The habit of weighing both sides runs deep. Decisions can take longer. They can also be more fair.
If you were born in a straight year, your Mercury passed through fast. The Libra tone is there, but it is one note among others. The sign your Mercury came from, or went to next, matters too.
With a Virgo Sun, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun, into the next sign. Mercury is also the ruler of Virgo. So a Virgo with Mercury in Libra has a ruler that has left home. The Virgo eye for detail gets a softer voice. The facts come out with tact.
With a Libra Sun, the Sun and Mercury share the sign. The mind and the self pull the same way. The wish for balance shows in both what you are and how you speak.
With a Scorpio Sun, Mercury trails behind the Sun, still in Libra. The Scorpio depth hides behind a calm, polite way of speaking. People hear the tact first and meet the depth later.
The method, so you can redo it
I used the free astronomy-engine library. It gives the position of each planet as seen from Earth, along the path of the Sun. The zodiac here is tropical, which means Libra starts at the fall equinox point.
Route one: I stepped through time from January 1, 1600, to January 1, 2400, every six hours. Each time Mercury or the Sun changed sign, I found the exact moment by halving the gap again and again. I did the same for each station. Then I summed the exact time in each sign. Visits less than 60 days apart were joined as one season. A season counts as a loop year if it holds a station or splits in two.
Route two: I downloaded daily positions of Mercury and the Sun from JPL Horizons, the NASA service. It uses the DE441 model. I redid every count on those files. The share of time came out at 8.818 percent, against 8.814 percent. The Sun sign split came out at 50.2, 35.0 and 14.9 percent, as before. The loop share of Libra time came out at 67.5 percent, against 67.6 percent. The widest gap from the Sun came out at 27.34 degrees.
For the dates from 2020 to 2031, I fetched JPL positions every ten minutes. Every entry and exit agreed with route one to within three minutes. Every station agreed to within ten minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Mercury in Libra each year?
In a straight year, from 17 to 21 days. In a loop year, it can stay up to 68 days. Over the long run, the average is about 32 days a year.
Is Mercury in Libra rare?
No. Over 1600 to 2400, it covers 8.81 percent of all time. That is more than one in twelve, and about six percent more than a Libra Sun.
Can I have Mercury in Libra if I am not a Libra?
Yes, if your Sun is in Virgo or Scorpio. About 35 percent of people with this Mercury are Virgo Suns, and about 15 percent are Scorpio Suns.
Which birth dates can have Mercury in Libra?
For births from 1900 to 2100, only dates from August 24 to November 11. The exact window each year depends on whether it was a loop year.
When is Mercury in Libra next?
The current visit ends on September 30, 2026. The next one starts on September 3, 2027, and turns into a loop. Mercury turns back on October 7, 2027, just past Libra, then returns.
Is Mercury strong in Libra?
It is a guest there. Libra is not its home or its place of honor. But in a night chart, Mercury rules the air element that Libra belongs to. And Lilly gives it the degrees from 19 to 24 of the sign.
