Mercury in Capricorn: More Common Than a Capricorn Sun

Here is a small puzzle. The Sun spends less time in Capricorn than in any other sign. Yet Mercury spends more time there than in nine of the twelve. So which is more common at birth, a Capricorn Sun or Mercury in Capricorn?

I ran the numbers over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400. Mercury is in Capricorn 8.96 percent of the time. The Sun is in Capricorn 8.06 percent of the time. So Mercury in Capricorn is about 11 percent more common than a Capricorn Sun. For each nine Capricorn Suns, there are about ten people with this Mercury.

This page explains why that happens, who holds this Mercury, how long each visit lasts, and when the next backward loops fall. The method is at the end, so you can check every figure.

Two clocks, one sign

Mercury is the planet of thought, speech and learning in a birth chart. It shows how you take in facts and how you put them into words. Capricorn is the earth sign of the winter solstice, ruled by Saturn. Put the two together and the old texts describe a mind that plans, weighs and speaks with care.

But before any reading, look at the clock. Each sign is a 30 degree slice of the sky. The Sun and this planet cross each slice at their own pace. That pace decides how many people are born with each placement.

The Sun runs fastest through Capricorn. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, so it moves quickest then. From here, that makes the Sun rush through this sign in 29.45 days, the shortest season of the year. Our guide to the Capricorn sign measures this and ranks all twelve seasons.

Mercury does the reverse. Over the long run, it spends a mean of 32.7 days a year in this sign. That is more than three days longer than the Sun. So the rarest Sun sign is one of the most common Mercury signs.

Sign Share of time with Mercury there Share of time with the Sun there.
Sagittarius 9.09 percent, the most of all 8.09 percent.
Scorpio 9.03 percent 8.19 percent.
Capricorn 8.96 percent, third of twelve 8.06 percent, the least of all.
Aquarius 8.65 percent 8.10 percent.
Gemini 7.57 percent, the least of all 8.58 percent.
Cancer 7.68 percent 8.61 percent, the most of all.

The pattern is plain. Where the Sun is slow, Mercury is thin. Where the Sun is fast, Mercury piles up. The two clocks run in opposite ways.

Why Mercury lingers here

The cause is Mercury’s own path around the Sun. Its orbit is the most stretched of all the planets. At its closest, it is 46 million kilometres from the Sun. At its farthest, it is 70 million. A planet slows down at the far end of its orbit and speeds up at the near end.

Its far end points toward about 18 degrees of Sagittarius. So it spends much more of its year on that side of the Sun. I measured it. Seen from the Sun, it sits in the Capricorn slice of sky 11.6 percent of the time. It sits in the Gemini slice only 5.4 percent of the time. That is more than twice as much.

From Earth, we see it next to the Sun, shifted a little to one side. That shift leans toward the slow side of its orbit. So it gets pulled into the signs near that end. The six signs from Virgo to Aquarius all hold it more than one twelfth of the time, which is 8.33 percent. The peak is Sagittarius, right at the slow end.

The Sun’s short season and Mercury’s long one come from two different orbits. Earth is fast in January. Mercury is slow on its far side. Both effects happen to meet in Capricorn.

Who is born with Mercury in Capricorn

Mercury never strays far from the Sun. In the 800 years, the widest gap I found with Mercury in this sign was 26.6 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So the Sun must sit in Capricorn, in the sign before it, or in the sign after it.

Here is how the people with this Mercury split by Sun sign. I measured the share of all the time it spends in this sign that falls under each Sun.

Sun sign at birth Share of people with Mercury in Capricorn.
Sun in Capricorn 51.1 percent of them.
Sun in Aquarius 29.7 percent of them.
Sun in Sagittarius 19.2 percent of them.
Any other Sun sign Zero, it cannot happen.

So almost half of the people with this Mercury are not Capricorns. And the second group is not the one most people guess. Aquarius Suns outnumber Sagittarius Suns by about three to two.

Why the tilt? With Mercury in this sign, it trails the Sun 56.4 percent of the time. On average, it sits 3.4 degrees behind. When it trails, the Sun has moved on, into Aquarius. When it runs ahead, the Sun is still back in Sagittarius. The lean toward the slow side of the orbit, seen above, is the same force at work.

Our Capricorn page asks the question the other way round. It starts from a Capricorn Sun and asks where the planet is. From a large draw of charts, it found Mercury in Capricorn for 57 in every 100, in Sagittarius for 26, and in Aquarius for 17. My exact count over 800 years gives 56.8, 26.5 and 16.8. The two routes agree, and both show the same lean behind the Sun.

The birth dates follow from this. For births from 1900 to 2100, this Mercury falls between 29 Nov and 15 Feb. The Sun, at those times, ran from 8 degrees of Sagittarius to 26 degrees of Aquarius. A birthday outside that band rules it out. Inside the band, you need the year, since each year’s visit is shorter.

If your Sun is in Aquarius, the page on Mercury in Aquarius runs the same count for the next sign. It finds only half of those people are Aquarius Suns.

Short years and long years

Mercury turns back three or four times a year. The word for this is retrograde. It means the planet seems to move backward against the stars, as it passes between Earth and the Sun. These backward loops decide how long it stays in any sign.

Over the 800 years, the visits fall into two kinds. They barely overlap.

Kind of year How long Mercury stays in Capricorn.
No backward loop in the sign From 18.2 to 20.4 days, with a middle value of 18.7 days.
A backward loop in the sign From 57 to 67 days, first entry to last exit.
Days truly inside the sign in those long years From 22 to 67 days, with a middle value of 50.3 days.
Share of years with a loop 350 years out of 799, or 44 percent.

A long year can play out in two ways. Mercury can turn back and turn forward again without leaving the sign. That happened in 103 years. Or it can slip out into the next sign or the one before, then come back. That split the visit in two in 247 years.

So your birth year matters a lot. In 2022 to 2023, Mercury stayed 66.5 days in one piece. In 2026, it stayed 18.8 days. That long year gave this Mercury to about three and a half times as many births.

Mercury retrograde in Capricorn, 2020 to 2031

Here are the backward loops that touch this sign. A station is the moment the planet seems to stop and turn. Times are in UTC, the clock of Greenwich. Convert to local time before you compare with a birth time.

Loop What Mercury did.
Winter 2021 to 2022 In from 13 Dec 2021 to 2 Jan 2022. Turned back on 14 Jan in Aquarius. Back in on 26 Jan, turned forward on 4 Feb at 24 degrees, out on 14 Feb.
Winter 2022 to 2023 In from 6 Dec 2022. Turned back on 29 Dec at 24 degrees. Turned forward on 18 Jan at 8 degrees. Out on 11 Feb, all in one piece.
Winter 2023 to 2024 In from 1 Dec 2023. Turned back on 13 Dec at 8 degrees. Left for Sagittarius on 23 Dec. Back in on 14 Jan, out on 5 Feb.
Winters 2024 to 2028 No loop in the sign, only short visits of 18 to 20 days.
Winter 2028 to 2029 In from 10 Dec 2028 to 31 Dec. Turned back on 7 Jan in Aquarius. Back in on 13 Jan, turned forward on 27 Jan at 17 degrees, out on 13 Feb.
Winter 2029 to 2030 In from 3 Dec 2029. Turned back on 22 Dec at 17 degrees. Turned forward on 11 Jan at 1 degree. Out on 8 Feb, all in one piece.
Winter 2030 to 2031 In from 1 Dec 2030. Turned back on 6 Dec at 1 degree. Left for Sagittarius on 10 Dec. Back in on 12 Jan, out on 1 Feb.

Notice the rhythm. Loops come in runs of three winters, then skip three or four. The whole pattern repeats every seven years or so. Each run also walks backward through the sign. In 2022 the turns fell at 24 degrees, in 2023 at 8 degrees. In 2029 they fell at 17 degrees, in 2030 at 1 degree.

How common is a backward Mercury at birth in this sign? Of all the time it spends in this sign, 17.7 percent is spent moving backward. Across all signs, the figure is 19.2 percent. So it is a bit less common here than the average.

The short visits in the coming years are these. It is here from 25 Dec 2026 to 13 Jan 2027, and from 18 Dec 2027 to 6 Jan 2028.

What the old authors say about this Mercury

The old texts judge a planet by the sign it sits in. They call this essential dignity: how much claim a planet has on its sign. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, gives Capricorn to Saturn as its night house. A house, in this sense, is a sign that a planet rules. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and is exalted in Virgo. Exaltation is a second home, a sign where a planet is honoured.

Capricorn gives Mercury none of that. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, lists the rulers of the earth signs as Venus by day and the Moon by night. The three faces, ten degree slices of the sign, go to Jupiter, Mars and the Sun. The planet of speech holds no rule over any of them.

But Capricorn does Mercury no harm either. Mercury is weak in the signs opposite its own: Sagittarius and Pisces. And it falls in Pisces, the sign opposite its exaltation. So Mercury leaves a hostile sign, Sagittarius, and walks into a neutral one. Lilly calls a planet with no dignity peregrine, which means a wanderer or a guest.

There is one small claim. The terms are five unequal slices of each sign, each given to a planet. In the table of terms that Lilly took from Ptolemy, Mercury rules Capricorn from 6 to 12 degrees. In the older Egyptian table, it rules the first 7 degrees. Ptolemy himself found that odd. He asked why the Egyptians put Mercury first in Capricorn at all, since it has no rule there.

I measured how many people fall in those slices. Of all the time it spends in this sign, 20.2 percent falls between 6 and 12 degrees. For the Egyptian slice, the share is 23.5 percent. So about one person in five with this Mercury has it in its own term.

Vettius Valens, in the Anthologies, reads each planet through the lord of its sign. Chris Brennan and Demetra George have brought that habit back for modern readers. So the next step is clear. To read a Capricorn Mercury, find Saturn. Our page on Saturn in Capricorn covers the case where the host is at home.

Reading your Mercury by Sun sign

Modern writers such as Robert Hand and Stephen Arroyo treat the Sun as the core self and Mercury as the way that self thinks and talks. Since this Mercury comes with three kinds of Sun, it reads three ways.

With the Sun in Capricorn, mind and self pull the same way. You think in steps, costs and results, and you say only what you can stand behind. People trust your word because you rarely take it back. The risk is a mind with no other voice to test it, which can harden into “that is how it has always been done”.

With the Sun in Aquarius, the self wants to change the system. Mercury in Capricorn gives it a map of how the system truly works. That makes a practical reformer, one who knows the rules before breaking them. This is the second largest group, so it deserves more space than most pages give it.

With the Sun in Sagittarius, the self is broad, hopeful and quick to believe. Mercury in Capricorn adds the brake. You still dream big, but you check the budget. The page on Mercury in Sagittarius covers the other half of that pairing, where the mind runs as wide as the Sun.

The same Saturn-ruled care shows up in love when Venus in Capricorn sits beside it.

Liz Greene and the psychological school read the chart as a whole. No single factor speaks alone. The house, the aspects and Saturn’s place all change the picture. Use the Sun sign split as a first step, not the last word.

The method, so you can redo it

A number no one can check is worth nothing at all. Here is how I got these.

I used the astronomy-engine library. For each moment, I took the apparent place of Mercury and the Sun, seen from the centre of the Earth. I turned each into a tropical longitude, which is a position measured from the spring equinox of that date.

For the first route, I stepped through time every six hours, from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400. Each time Mercury or the Sun changed sign, I narrowed the moment by halving the step until it was exact to a fraction of a second. I found each turn the same way, from the sign of Mercury’s daily motion. Then I added up the exact time spent in each pair of signs. That gave 11,867 sign changes for Mercury and 5,044 turns.

For the second route, I did no search at all. I sampled every hour over the same 800 years, 7,012,656 points in all, with a separate routine for the Sun. Each share matched the first route to within 0.01 percent. I then checked eight entry and exit times from 2022 to 2029 against JPL Horizons, the NASA ephemeris. All agreed to within two minutes.

Why 800 years? Short windows mislead. Over 1950 to 2010, Mercury’s share in Capricorn comes out at 9.06 percent, against 8.96 percent over 800 years. The thesis holds on both windows. But for other planets the gap is large, so I use the long window by default.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mercury in Capricorn more common than a Capricorn Sun?

Yes. Over 800 years, Mercury is in Capricorn 8.96 percent of the time, and the Sun 8.06 percent. That makes it about 11 percent more common.

Can I have Mercury in Capricorn if I am not a Capricorn?

Yes, if your Sun is in Sagittarius or Aquarius. Of the people with this Mercury, 29.7 percent have an Aquarius Sun and 19.2 percent a Sagittarius Sun.

How long is Mercury in Capricorn each year?

About 18 to 20 days in a year with no backward loop there. In a year with a loop, the visit runs 57 to 67 days from first entry to last exit.

When is Mercury next retrograde in Capricorn?

Mercury next moves backward through Capricorn from 13 to 27 January 2029. The next loop wholly inside the sign runs from 22 December 2029 to 11 January 2030.

Which birth dates can have Mercury in Capricorn?

For births from 1900 to 2100, only 29 November to 15 February. The exact span in your birth year is shorter, so check the table above.

Is Mercury strong in Capricorn?

It is a guest in Saturn’s sign, with no house, exaltation or face there. It is not weak either. Its only claim is its term, from 6 to 12 degrees in Lilly’s table.
