Gemini and Virgo compatibility starts with a twist. One planet rules both signs. Mercury is the host of Gemini and the host of Virgo. So you might expect these two to share a Mercury sign now and then.
They never do. We tracked Mercury for 800 years and checked the result against NASA data. In every Gemini and Virgo couple, the two Mercury points sit at least 16 degrees apart. They cannot share a sign, and they cannot meet in a close link. Yet half of these couples have their Mercury signs in a friendly angle.
This guide shows each step, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Gemini and Virgo couple? | About 1 random US couple in 65, or 1.53 percent. |
| Where does it rank among the 78 pairs? | Fifth, in a close pack near the top. |
| Did real marriages favor the pair? | No. They came in 0.14 percent under chance. |
| How far apart are the signs? | Three signs, or 90 degrees, a link called a square. |
| Can their Mercury signs match? | Never. The two Mercury points stay at least 16 degrees apart. |
| How many have Mercury signs in a trine or sextile? | About half of all couples, or 50 percent. |
How many US couples are Gemini and Virgo?
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Gemini season runs from about May 21 to June 20. Virgo season runs from about August 23 to September 22. The exact hour moves a bit each year, which is why our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.
The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things set the count. The first is the length of each season. The Sun moves slowest in early July, so the summer signs last a bit longer. The second is how many babies are born per day. In the US, births peak from July to September.
Here are the two shares, from 62.2 million US births by exact date.
| Sign | Share of US births, 2000 to 2014 | Rank among the twelve signs. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.96 percent | First. |
| Virgo | 8.94 percent | Second. |
| Gemini | 8.56 percent | Fourth, just behind Cancer. |
| Capricorn | 7.63 percent | Last. |
| If all signs were equal | 8.33 percent | No rank. |
A couple can be a Gemini woman with a Virgo man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Gemini share times the Virgo share. That gives 1.53 percent, or about 1 random US couple in 65. If all signs were equal, it would be 1 in 72.
There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Gemini and Virgo come fifth. Leo and Virgo sit on top, as our page on the most common Sun sign couple shows. Cancer and Leo come second, and Cancer and Virgo third. The top eight pairs sit within a tenth of a point of each other.
None of this comes from the stars. It comes from the calendar and from when US babies are born. A common pair is not a better pair. It is a pair you are more likely to meet.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain question. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict, and do others marry less?
His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version of it in March 2008.
We pulled the Gemini and Virgo cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you get if people pick partners with no regard to sign.
| Couples in the 2001 census | Found | Expected by chance | Gap. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo husband, Gemini wife | 69,282 couples | 69,448 couples | 0.24 percent fewer. |
| Gemini husband, Virgo wife | 69,423 couples | 69,453 couples | 0.04 percent fewer. |
| Both ways together | 138,705 couples | 138,901 couples | 0.14 percent fewer, about 200 couples. |
So Gemini and Virgo married a hair less than chance. Is that a curse? The size says no. Voas notes that with 9.5 million couples in a table of 144 cells, a cell can drift up to about 450 couples by chance alone. The larger Gemini and Virgo cell sits about 170 under. That is well inside the band. A square did not keep these couples apart.
A square: three signs apart
Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Cancer and Leo sit between Gemini and Virgo, so the two signs are 90 degrees apart. Astrologers call that angle a square. An aspect is an angle between two points in a chart that astrologers read as a link, and the square is one of the four classic ones.
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he sorts the aspects. Trines and sextiles join signs of the same kind, he says, so they are in tune. Squares and oppositions join signs of opposite kinds, so he calls them “disharmonious.” Gemini is a masculine sign in the old scheme, and Virgo a feminine one. So by his rule, this pair is a clash.
Ptolemy gives the pair one tie in its favor. In chapter 11 he calls four signs “bicorporeal,” which means double-bodied: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Each one ends a season and leads into the next. Today we call them mutable signs. So these two partners share a mode, the way a season ends, even as the square pulls them apart.
Jupiter rules the other half of that cross, and our page on Pisces and Sagittarius compatibility shows why that twin pair is rarer in US births.
Ptolemy lists two more ties between signs. Signs that “command and obey” take the same time to rise. Signs that “behold” each other have days of the same length. Gemini and Virgo share neither tie. We checked both ways of reading the rule: by whole signs, as the notes in the Robbins edition do, and degree by degree, as William Lilly does. Neither reading pairs these two.
Here is the catch with any aspect by sign. A Gemini Sun can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees of Gemini. The same goes for a Virgo Sun. So the true angle between two such Suns runs from about 60 to about 120 degrees. The leeway astrologers allow around an exact angle is called the orb.
We have measured the true share on real US births. About 19 percent of couples fall within 3 degrees of the exact angle. About 36 percent fall within 6 degrees, 46 percent within 8, and 56 percent within 10. The share is the same for any two signs a set number of steps apart. It comes from the shape of the problem, not from these two signs. Our page on Pisces and Gemini walks through the same test for Gemini’s other square.
One ruler, two homes
In the old books, each sign has a planet that rules it, as a host rules a home. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo. It is the planet astrologers link with talk, plans and daily thinking.
Ptolemy explains the layout in chapter 17. The Sun and Moon took the two warmest signs, Leo and Cancer. Mercury, he writes, “never is farther removed from the sun than one sign in either direction.” So it got the two signs on each side of the Sun and Moon homes: Gemini next to Cancer, and Virgo next to Leo.
The two homes are not equal. In chapter 19 Ptolemy adds that Mercury is exalted in Virgo, which means it is at its strongest there. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), puts the peak at 15 degrees of Virgo. No other planet in the old scheme is exalted in one of its own homes. So Virgo holds Mercury twice, as host and as honored guest.
Gemini gets a different bonus. In chapter 18, Ptolemy splits the signs into four groups of three, called triangles. Gemini sits in the air group, which Saturn rules by day and Mercury by night. Virgo sits in the earth group, ruled by Venus by day and the Moon by night. So Mercury helps rule Gemini’s whole group, while in Virgo it rules the sign itself with extra weight.
That is the old picture of this pair: one planet, used two ways. In Gemini, Mercury is the quick voice of the air signs. In Virgo, it is the careful hand of the harvest. Our guides to Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Virgo cover each placement on its own.
The Mercury test: never the same sign
Many readers want to know if a couple “speaks the same language.” One simple check is whether the two partners have Mercury in the same sign. For most sign pairs, some couples pass. For Gemini and Virgo, none do.
The reason is Mercury’s leash. Seen from Earth, Mercury always stays close to the Sun. We tracked it every 3 hours from 1600 to 2400. The widest gap we found between Mercury and the Sun was 27.8 degrees. It never reaches 30 degrees, one full sign.
That rule settles a lot. A Gemini’s Mercury can be in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. A Virgo’s Mercury can be in Leo, Virgo or Libra. The two lists share no sign at all. Here is how the Mercury signs split, over the same 800 years.
| Where Mercury sits | Share of Gemini Suns | Share of Virgo Suns. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | 26.6 percent | None, never. |
| Gemini | 47.85 percent | None, never. |
| Cancer | 25.6 percent | None, never. |
| Leo | None, never | 14.1 percent. |
| Virgo | None, never | 49.5 percent. |
| Libra | None, never | 36.4 percent. |
The Gemini figure of 47.85 percent matches the count on our Gemini sign guide. The Virgo figure of 49.5 percent matches our Virgo sign guide.
Not even across the line
Two points in different signs can still sit close, one at the end of a sign and one at the start of the next. For this pair, that would mean a Gemini with Mercury late in Cancer and a Virgo with Mercury early in Leo. So we looked for the closest such case.
It never gets close. In Gemini season, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun by about 25 degrees at most. So a Gemini’s Mercury never gets past about 25 degrees of Cancer. In Virgo season, Mercury trails the Sun by 18.6 degrees at most. So a Virgo’s Mercury never falls back before about 11 degrees of Leo.
The gap between those two limits is 15.9 degrees. That is the closest a Gemini’s Mercury and a Virgo’s Mercury have come in 800 years. A conjunction, the link astrologers draw when two points sit within about 8 degrees, never happens for this pair. Not in one couple.
Why does Mercury trail so little in late summer? Mercury’s path around the Sun is the most stretched of all the planets. So its reach from the Sun changes with the time of year. In Virgo season, its reach behind the Sun is short, only about two thirds of its reach ahead. We checked both limit dates against NASA’s Horizons system. Both matched our figures to within 0.02 degrees.
Half the couples have friendly Mercury signs
So the Mercury signs never match. But they can still form a link by sign. Count the steps from the Gemini’s Mercury sign to the Virgo’s Mercury sign. Each step count is an aspect, just like the one between the two Suns.
| Steps between the Mercury signs | Name of the link | Share of Gemini and Virgo couples. |
|---|---|---|
| One sign, Cancer with Leo | Next door, no classic aspect | 3.6 percent. |
| Two signs | Sextile, a soft link | 19.4 percent. |
| Three signs | Square, the same link as the Suns | 36.7 percent. |
| Four signs | Trine, the softest link | 30.6 percent. |
| Five signs, Taurus with Libra | Quincunx, an awkward link | 9.7 percent. |
Add the trine and the sextile. That comes to 50.0 percent. So one Gemini and Virgo couple in two has Mercury signs in one of the soft links, even though their Suns form a square. A bit more than 1 couple in 3 has Mercury signs in a square, just like the Suns.
By degree, the numbers shrink, as they do for any aspect. Within 8 degrees of exact, 21.9 percent of couples have a Mercury square. Another 16.7 percent have a Mercury trine, and 9.9 percent a Mercury sextile.
Both at home: 1 couple in 4
The biggest single case is the one the books like best. The Gemini has Mercury in Gemini, and the Virgo has Mercury in Virgo. Each partner holds the ruler in its own home. That is 47.85 percent times 49.5 percent, or 23.7 percent. It covers about 1 couple in 4.
Here is the catch. When both Mercury points sit at home, they form a square by sign, just like the Suns. So in the purest version of this pair, the two partners use the same planet at full strength, from two angles that do not line up. The old reading would call that two sharp minds that argue well. It would not call it one mind.
Check your own couple in two minutes
You need both birth dates. A birth time helps, but it is not required for Mercury. Then follow these steps.
- Open any free chart site and enter each birth date.
- Find the line for Mercury and note its sign.
- Count the signs from the Gemini’s Mercury to the Virgo’s Mercury.
- Two or four steps is a soft link, found in half of all couples.
- Gemini with Virgo is the case where both hold Mercury at home, found in 1 couple in 4.
If your Mercury signs form a square, that is not a warning. It is true of a bit more than 1 couple in 3. In the old style of reading, it means you think in different keys. It does not mean you cannot understand each other.
Air and earth, both mutable
The old books sort each sign three ways. Here is how Gemini and Virgo line up.
| Trait on the usual lists | Gemini | Virgo. |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Air, hot and moist in the old theory | Earth, cold and dry in the old theory. |
| Mode | Mutable, the end of spring | Mutable, the end of summer. |
| Gender in the old books | Masculine | Feminine. |
| Ruler | Mercury, which also helps rule the air group by night | Mercury, which is also exalted here. |
| Symbol | The twins, two people | The maiden with a sheaf of wheat. |
Air and earth share no quality in the old theory. Air is hot and moist. Earth is cold and dry. That is the root of Ptolemy’s clash between signs of opposite kinds.
The mode tells a softer story. Both signs close a season. Mutable signs adjust, sort and hand things on. So the old picture of this pair is two people who both like to change plans, one by talking it out and one by fixing the details.
What the pair looks like in daily life
These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know. They describe two styles, drawn from the sign books.
Gemini, as a mutable air sign, leads with talk. Many threads at once. A new idea before the last one ends. Needs said out loud, then changed an hour later. Gemini wants to be heard, and wants room to think.
Virgo, as a mutable earth sign, leads with use. Help given in small, exact ways. A list for the week. Needs said plainly, with the steps spelled out. Virgo wants to be useful, and wants its effort to be seen.
The Mercury count fits this sketch. Both partners run on the same planet, so both like words, facts and plans. But they never use it from the same sign. One asks what else is out there. The other asks what works.
| Where it snags | What Gemini feels | What Virgo feels | A small step that helps. |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new plan | Wants to try three ideas | Wants to test one idea well | Gemini lists the ideas, Virgo picks the first test. |
| Feedback | Hears a fix as a stop sign | Means the fix as care | Start with what works, then give one fix. |
| Talk | Jumps from topic to topic | Wants to finish one point | Keep one topic per talk, and a notes list for the rest. |
| Plans for the week | Wants room to change them | Wants them fixed | Set two fixed slots and leave the rest open. |
None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with different styles can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.
The rest of the chart counts for more
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. For this pair, three stand out.
Mercury comes first, since it rules both signs and sets the test above. The Moon comes next, since it shows what makes a person feel safe. It can sit in any sign for either partner. Venus shows what each partner finds lovely and how they show care.
Affection carries its own signature in a chart, and Gemini and Virgo Venus placements follows this pairing along it. In that configuration, the square binds two signs that push at the same moment for different ends.
Voas saw one reply coming: that only a full birth chart can say anything. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show up in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.
How we measured
You can redo every number on this page.
Birth shares. We used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003, where Gemini and Virgo also rank fifth. Each birth day was placed on the sky with the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side. The chance for two different signs is two times the product of their shares.
Mercury. Route one used the astronomy-engine code. It placed the Sun and Mercury every 3 hours from 1600 to 2400. For each Gemini and Virgo moment, it noted where Mercury stood, to a tenth of a degree. Route two ran the same count with a step of 5 hours and 17 minutes and a start 37 minutes later, so the two sets of moments do not line up. The two routes agree to within 0.01 points on every share.
Limits. A third run stepped every hour over the same 800 years to find the two extreme cases. The last Mercury for a Gemini came on June 21, 1644, at about 25.5 degrees of Cancer. The first Mercury for a Virgo came on August 23, 2367, at about 11.4 degrees of Leo. Both times are in UTC. We checked both moments against NASA’s Horizons system, which uses the DE441 model.
Couples. The chance for each pair of Mercury signs is the Gemini share times the Virgo share, since two partners are born at unrelated times. For the degree tests, we paired every Gemini bin with every Virgo bin and summed the weights. Both routes gave the same result to a tenth of a point.
Marriages. The census counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, built from census table C0792. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date, and the Mercury counts use time, not births. The figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.
Questions people ask
Are Gemini and Virgo compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Gemini and Virgo couples within 0.14 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair is a square, which Ptolemy called disharmonious because it joins a masculine and a feminine sign.
How common is a Gemini and Virgo couple?
About 1 random US couple in 65, or 1.53 percent, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks fifth of all 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.
Can a Gemini and a Virgo have the same Mercury sign?
No, never. Mercury stays close to the Sun, so a Gemini’s Mercury is in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and a Virgo’s is in Leo, Virgo or Libra. Over 800 years, the two Mercury points never came closer than 15.9 degrees.
Why do Gemini and Virgo share a ruler?
Ptolemy gave the Sun and Moon the homes of Leo and Cancer. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so it got the next sign on each side: Gemini and Virgo. Mercury is also exalted in Virgo, the only planet exalted in one of its own homes.
What should a Gemini and Virgo couple compare next?
The Mercury, Moon and Venus signs of both partners. Half of all Gemini and Virgo couples have Mercury signs in a trine or sextile. About 1 in 4 has both Mercury points at home, which forms a square like the Suns.
