Pisces and Gemini sit three signs apart. That gap makes a square, the angle of strain in the old books. Both are signs of change. And each one is ruled by a planet that is weak in the other’s sign. Few pairs on the wheel carry that kind of cross tie.
This guide reads the pair through those ties, and it checks them with real numbers. How many of these couples form a true square, degree by degree? How likely is a Pisces and Gemini couple in the US? And do the two partners’ Mercury signs clash as much as their Suns? We show how we got each answer.
One thing first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Sun signs predict how a couple will fare. What follows is a way to read two people, not a forecast of their fate.
Pisces and Gemini compatibility starts with a square
Picture the zodiac as a clock face with twelve signs on it. Start at Pisces and count three signs on: Aries, Taurus, Gemini. Three signs make 90 degrees. Astrologers call this angle a square. An angle between two signs is called an aspect.
Gemini is an air sign. Air stands for thought, talk and links between people. Pisces is a water sign. Water stands for feeling, mood and what flows under words. So the two signs do not share an element.
They do share a mode. A mode is the way a sign acts in its season. Both are mutable signs, which means they close a season and get ready for the next one. Gemini ends spring. Pisces ends winter. Both bend, adapt and let go. That shared trait is why a square joins them: every square links two signs of the same mode.
The oldest source adds a detail. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 11, he calls Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces the bicorporeal signs, which means signs with two bodies. They sit between two kinds of weather and share, he writes, the nature of both. The glyph of each sign shows it: two twins for Gemini, two fish for Pisces.
Ptolemy is less warm about the angle. In chapter 13 he calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, because they join signs of the same kind. The square and the opposition he calls disharmonious, because they join a masculine sign with a feminine one. Gemini is a masculine sign in his scheme, and Pisces a feminine one. He lists two more kinds of bond in chapters 14 and 15, for signs of equal rising time and for signs of equal day length. Pisces and Gemini have neither. For more on how each angle works, see our guide to the square in astrology.
Two rulers, each weak in the other’s sign
The old books rank each planet in each sign. These ranks are called dignities. A planet is strong in the sign it rules. That rank is called domicile, or home. A planet is weak in the sign across the wheel from its home. That rank is called detriment. It has one more weak sign, called its fall.
Mercury rules Gemini. Jupiter rules Pisces. Ptolemy gives both rules in Book 1, chapter 17. William Lilly repeats them in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647. Lilly spells out the weak signs too.
Of Jupiter, Lilly writes that it receives detriment in Gemini and Virgo. Of Mercury, he writes that it receives detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and that its fall is in Pisces. So the ruler of each sign is weak in the other. Mercury is weak twice over in Pisces.
How rare is this cross tie?
We checked all 66 pairs of different signs by hand, from Lilly’s table. We used the seven planets of the old books, from the Sun out to Saturn. In ten pairs, each ruler sits in detriment in the other sign.
Six of those ten are signs face to face, such as Aries and Libra. For them, the tie is automatic, since detriment is the sign across from home. The other four are two pairs of next-door signs and two squares. The squares are Pisces and Gemini, and Virgo and Sagittarius.
Only one of the four adds a fall on top. It is this pair. Mercury in Pisces holds both weak ranks at once, and no other planet does that in any sign. It happens because Mercury is exalted in Virgo, one of its own homes. So its fall and its detriment land on the same sign, Pisces.
What that means for the pair
Mercury is the planet of words, lists and quick links. Jupiter is the planet of faith, meaning and growth. Each sign runs on its own ruler’s fuel.
So Gemini brings the fuel that Pisces burns least well: facts, names, the exact word. Pisces brings the fuel that Gemini burns least well: one big belief, held on trust. Each partner offers the other a gift that the other’s sign handles with some clumsiness. Read that as a picture of friction, not as a flaw in either one.
For the full portrait of each sign, read our Pisces sign guide and our Gemini sign guide.
How many of these couples form a true square?
Here is a point most match charts skip. A square by sign is not always a square by degree.
Each sign spans 30 degrees. A Gemini born on the first day of the sign and a Pisces born on its last day have Suns 61 degrees apart. That is close to a sextile, the easy angle of 60 degrees. Flip the case, and the gap grows to 119 degrees, close to a trine. Only in the middle do the Suns make a real 90 degree angle.
Astrologers allow some slack around the exact angle. That slack is called the orb. Our page on the square uses 6 degrees, so any gap from 84 to 96 degrees counts. We asked how many Pisces and Gemini couples fall inside that range.
How we measured it
First route: we took real US birth counts by day, from the Social Security Administration, for 2000 to 2014. We spread each day’s births over the clock in Chicago time. For each birth we found the Sun’s exact degree. Then we paired every Pisces with every Gemini and measured the gap.
Second route: we assumed the Sun’s degree is spread evenly across each sign. That gives a simple formula. The two routes agree within a quarter of a point.
| Slack allowed around 90 degrees | Share of Pisces and Gemini couples inside it | What the formula gives. |
|---|---|---|
| Within 1 degree, a near exact square | 6.9 percent of couples | 6.6 percent. |
| Within 3 degrees | 19.3 percent of couples | 19.0 percent. |
| Within 6 degrees, the usual orb | 36.2 percent of couples | 36.0 percent. |
| Within 8 degrees, a wide orb | 46.4 percent of couples | 46.2 percent. |
So only about one Pisces and Gemini couple in three has a true Sun square at the usual orb. Two couples in three have a square by sign only. About one couple in four has Suns more than 15 degrees off the square. And about 2 couples in 100 have Suns within 6 degrees of a sextile, with 2 more near a trine.
This matters for how you read your own pair. The square by sign is a fact of the calendar. The square by degree is a fact of your two birthdays. You need both dates to know which one you have.
How common is a Pisces and Gemini couple?
Here is a question no match chart answers. Say you pick two Americans at random. How likely is it that one is a Pisces and the other a Gemini?
If births were spread evenly, each sign would hold one twelfth of people. The odds of this pair would be two in 144, or one in 72. The two is there because either partner can be the Pisces.
But births are not spread evenly. More US babies arrive in late summer and early fall. So we use real birth counts. The Social Security data for 2000 to 2014 cover 62.2 million births, and we checked them against CDC counts for 1994 to 2003.
| Sign | Share of US births, 2000 to 2014 | How it compares with an even spread. |
|---|---|---|
| Pisces | 8.04 percent of births | A little below one in twelve. |
| Gemini | 8.56 percent of births | A little above one in twelve. |
| A Pisces and Gemini pair | 1.38 percent of random pairs | About one couple in 73. |
| Even spread, as a baseline | 1.39 percent of random pairs | One couple in 72. |
The math is short. Take the Pisces share times the Gemini share, then double it. That gives 1.38 percent. The small Pisces deficit and the small Gemini surplus almost cancel out. So this pair is about as common as chance would give. What sets it apart is the cross tie of rulers, not the head count.
One practical note. If you were born on February 18 or 19, March 20, May 20 or 21, or June 20 to 22, your sign depends on the year and the hour. Check it with our guide to the zodiac signs before you read on.
The planet of talk: where each partner’s Mercury sits
For this pair, Mercury is the planet to watch. It rules Gemini, it is weakest in Pisces, and it shapes how people talk and think. So we asked how the two partners’ Mercury signs meet.
Seen from Earth, Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. So Mercury sits in the Sun’s sign or in one of the two signs next to it.
| Sun sign of the partner | Where Mercury can sit | Share of people with that Sun sign, 1600 to 2400. |
|---|---|---|
| Pisces | Aquarius, Pisces or Aries | 36.90, 49.06 and 14.03 percent. |
| Gemini | Taurus, Gemini or Cancer | 26.58, 47.85 and 25.57 percent. |
The Pisces row comes from our Pisces page, and the Gemini share of 47.85 percent from our Gemini page. We measured the Taurus and Cancer shares for this guide, over the same 800 years. We sampled the sky every six hours with one program and every 4.8 hours with another. Both runs gave the same shares to within a tenth of a point.
So about half of all Pisces carry Mercury in Pisces, its weakest sign. That is geometry, not bad luck, as our page on Mercury in Pisces explains. And about half of all Geminis carry Mercury at home.
How the two Mercury signs meet
Next we paired the two lists. Each Pisces Mercury can meet each Gemini Mercury, which gives nine cases. We grouped them by the angle between the two signs.
| Angle between the two Mercury signs | Share of Pisces and Gemini couples | Cases that make it up. |
|---|---|---|
| Square, three signs apart | About 37 percent | Pisces with Gemini, Aquarius with Taurus, Aries with Cancer. |
| Trine, same element | About 30 percent | Aquarius with Gemini, Pisces with Cancer. |
| Sextile, friendly signs | About 20 percent | Pisces with Taurus, Aries with Gemini. |
| Quincunx, five signs apart | About 9 percent | Aquarius with Cancer. |
| Next-door signs | About 4 percent | Aries with Taurus. |
Here is the finding. The Suns of this pair always clash by sign. Their Mercury signs clash in only about 37 percent of couples. In half of all couples, the two Mercury signs form a trine or a sextile, the two easy angles.
The textbook case, with Mercury in Pisces facing Mercury in Gemini, covers about 23 percent of couples. That is the pair the cross tie describes in full. For three couples in four, the talk between them runs on a different track than the Sun signs suggest.
What ten million marriages showed
Do signs shape who marries whom? One sociologist tested it on a large scale. David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of 10.3 million married couples.
At first, same-sign couples looked a little too common. Voas traced the excess to errors on the forms. Some people wrote the same birthday for both spouses. Once he took that out, the pairs fell where chance puts them. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. The paper came out in 2007, and the Skeptical Inquirer ran a summary in March 2008.
Our US count points the same way. Pisces and Gemini pair up at the rate chance predicts. So read this pairing as a lens on two styles. It is not a score, and it is not a verdict on your couple.
Reading the pair as a lens, not a verdict
With the facts in place, here is how astrologers read the dynamic. These are pictures from the tradition, not rules for your life.
Talk
Gemini talks to find out what it thinks. It names, sorts and jumps from one topic to the next. Pisces feels its way to meaning and then looks for words. A Gemini can hear a Pisces answer as vague. A Pisces can hear a Gemini answer as glib. The cross tie names that friction: each uses the tool the other’s sign holds least well.
Change
Both signs are mutable. Neither one clings to a plan. That makes the pair quick to forgive and quick to shift. The risk is drift. Astrologers read two mutable signs as a couple that needs some fixed point, such as a set day, a shared task or a home base.
Conflict
Neither sign enjoys a hard fight. Gemini argues from a safe distance, with jokes and facts. Pisces slips away from the heat. Both moves can bury a problem. Robert Hand, in Planets in Aspect, reads the square as a strain that pushes a person to act. Here, the strain runs between thought and feeling.
Shared ground
Here the two bodies of each sign earn their place. Both signs hold two sides at once. Both like play, stories and new faces. Both can see a thing from more than one angle. Liz Greene, in her book on Neptune, ties Pisces to a longing to merge with something larger. Gemini is the sign of the curious mind. Put together, that is a couple that can dream out loud.
What the full chart changes
A Sun sign is one planet out of ten. Two charts can share Sun signs and look nothing alike.
The rising sign shows first impressions and daily style. It changes about every two hours, so it needs a birth time. The Moon shows emotional needs. Mars shows drive and desire. Mercury, as we saw, can soften the square or repeat it.
Venus adds the layer of taste and romance. Our page on Pisces and Gemini Venus placements reads the case where both Venus signs match this pair. Astrologers compare full charts to see all this. The method is called synastry, which means setting two charts side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Are Pisces and Gemini compatible?
Astrology gives no yes or no. The signs form a square, three signs apart, with no shared element but the same mutable mode. Each sign’s ruler is weak in the other’s sign. Read it as a lens on two styles, not a forecast.
What aspect do Pisces and Gemini make?
By sign, a square: three signs, or 90 degrees, apart. By degree, only about 36 percent of these couples have Suns within 6 degrees of an exact square. The rest have a square by sign only.
Why is Mercury said to be weak in Pisces?
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Pisces sits across from Virgo, which makes it Mercury’s detriment. Ptolemy and Lilly also give Pisces as Mercury’s fall. It is the only sign where one planet holds both weak ranks.
How common is a Pisces and Gemini couple?
From US birth data, about 8.04 percent of people are Pisces and 8.56 percent are Gemini. Two people picked at random form a Pisces and Gemini pair about once in 73 tries, close to the one in 72 of an even spread.
Do Pisces and Gemini communicate well?
It depends on each partner’s Mercury, not only the Sun. In about half of these couples, the two Mercury signs form a trine or a sextile. In about 37 percent they form a square, like the Suns.
Does it matter who is the man and who is the woman?
Not in the chart. A Pisces man with a Gemini woman and a Gemini man with a Pisces woman have the same angle and the same cross tie of rulers. What changes the reading is the rest of each chart.
