Mercury came into Cancer on June 1, 2026, and did not leave until August 9. That is 69 days in one sign. In a plain year, it crosses Cancer in about 15. So a lot of babies born this summer have Mercury in Cancer. And many of them are not Cancers at all.
I ran the sky over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, to see who is born with this Mercury. Only 53.4 percent of them have the Sun in Cancer. Another 28.6 percent have the Sun in Gemini. The last 18.0 percent have the Sun in Leo. So Geminis get this Mercury more than Leos do, by about three to two.
Mercury in Cancer is the only Mercury sign a Gemini and a Leo can share, as our guide to Gemini and Leo compatibility shows.
That lean has a cause. In this sign, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun more than it trails it. The old books have a word for that side of the Sun, and it fits the sign of the Moon well. This page sets out the counts, the loop years, the dates to 2031, and the method, so you can check each figure.
Mercury and Cancer, in plain terms
In a birth chart, Mercury stands for how you think, learn and talk. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, gave it the rational part of the soul. Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies, tied it to letters, trade and speech.
Cancer is the fourth sign, the one the Sun enters at the start of summer. It is a water sign, one of the three signs of feeling. It is also a cardinal sign, which means it opens a season. The Moon rules it. Our guide to the Cancer sign covers the sign itself. This page stays with the planet and the sky clock that hands it out.
Put the two together and the old reading is a mind that thinks through memory and mood. It keeps what it hears. It speaks once it feels safe. But first, look at who can have it.
Who is born with Mercury in Cancer
Mercury never strays far from the Sun. The angle between them, seen from Earth, is called the elongation. In the 800 years, the widest gap I found with Mercury in Cancer was 25.8 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So the Sun must be in Cancer, in the sign before it, or in the sign after it.
Here is how the people with this Mercury split by Sun sign. I measured the share of all the time Mercury spends in Cancer that falls under each Sun. Time is the right yardstick, since births are spread across the year.
| Sun sign at birth | Share of people with Mercury in Cancer. |
|---|---|
| Sun in Cancer | 53.4 percent of them. |
| Sun in Gemini | 28.6 percent of them. |
| Sun in Leo | 18.0 percent of them. |
| Any other Sun sign | Zero, it cannot happen. |
In date terms, for births from 1900 to 2100, this Mercury falls between May 27 and August 12. Over the full 800 years, the Sun ran from 6 degrees of Gemini to 19 degrees of Leo at those times. A birthday outside that band rules it out. Inside it, you need the year and the time.
Now turn the question round. Start from the Sun sign and ask where Mercury is.
| Your Sun sign | Chance that your Mercury is in Cancer. |
|---|---|
| Sun in Gemini | 25.6 percent of Gemini charts. |
| Sun in Cancer | 47.6 percent of Cancer charts. |
| Sun in Leo | 16.2 percent of Leo charts. |
So a Cancer Sun has a near coin toss to share the sign with Mercury. Our Cancer sign page found 47.7 percent from a large draw of charts. My exact count gives 47.6. The two routes agree. For the rest of the Cancer Suns, Mercury sits in Leo 31.8 percent of the time, and in Gemini 20.6 percent. Again, the forward sign wins.
Those ranges overlap with a Gemini Sun’s, which is why a Gemini and a Cancer share a Mercury sign in about 2 couples in 9.
If your Sun is in Gemini and your Mercury is here, read the page on Mercury in Gemini for the sign next door. A few degrees the other way gives Mercury in Leo, built on warmth and pride.
Why Mercury runs ahead of the Sun here
When Mercury sits east of the Sun, it sets after the Sun. You can see it low in the west at dusk. Call that the dusk side. When it sits west of the Sun, it rises first, at dawn. Call that the dawn side.
With Mercury in Cancer, it is on the dusk side 55.7 percent of the time. On average, it sits 3.1 degrees ahead of the Sun. When it runs ahead, the Sun lags one sign back, in Gemini. That is why Geminis outnumber Leos in the first table.
The cause is the shape of Mercury’s path. Its orbit is the most stretched of all the planets. It swings far from the Sun on one side and close on the other. In early summer, the dusk swings happen on the far side of that orbit, so they run wider. I checked this with the widest swings that land in Cancer.
| Widest swing that lands in Cancer | Size, over 1600 to 2400. |
|---|---|
| Dusk side, 188 cases | 22.6 to 25.7 degrees, 24.2 on average. |
| Dawn side, 203 cases | 18.7 to 21.1 degrees, 19.7 on average. |
A wider swing means more days out on that side. So the dusk side gets more of the time.
The lean flips with the season. In winter signs, Mercury trails the Sun. Our page on Mercury in Capricorn found it on the dawn side 56.4 percent of the time, with the Sun pulled forward into Aquarius. In the summer signs, the tilt goes the other way. Cancer is where that summer lean begins in earnest.
A night Mercury, by Ptolemy’s rule
This lean has a name in the old texts. Traditional astrology sorts the planets into two teams, one for the day and one for the night. That split is called sect. The Sun, Jupiter and Saturn belong to the day. The Moon, Venus and Mars belong to the night.
Mercury is the odd one. Ptolemy, in Tetrabiblos book 1, chapter 7, calls it common to both. He makes it a day planet when it rises before the Sun, and a night planet when it sets after the Sun. Chris Brennan sets out the same rule in Hellenistic Astrology, as the tradition that came down from the Greek authors.
So by Ptolemy’s rule, Mercury in Cancer is a night planet 55.7 percent of the time. It joins the Moon’s team in the Moon’s own sign. That fits the old picture of Cancer as a sign of the night, of memory and of the inner home. The fit is a matter of meaning, not of proof. But the count backs it with a real tilt.
You can check your own chart. If your Mercury’s degree is higher than your Sun’s, counting on around the zodiac, it is on the dusk side. If it is lower, it is on the dawn side.
Short years and loop years
Mercury turns back three or four times a year. The word for this is retrograde. It means the planet seems to move backward against the stars for about three weeks. It happens each time Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun. The point where it seems to stop and turn is called a station.
When a turn falls in Cancer, or just next to it, the stay stretches. When no turn falls there, Mercury runs straight through. Over the 800 years, the two kinds of year barely look alike.
| Kind of year | How long Mercury stays in Cancer. |
|---|---|
| Straight run, 549 years of 800 | From 14.0 to 19.2 days, with a median of 14.8 days. |
| Loop year, 251 years of 800 | From 58 to 69 days, first entry to last exit. |
| Days truly inside Cancer in a loop year | From 22 to 69 days, with a median of 67 days. |
The median is the middle value: half the years fall below it, half above. So a straight year gives Cancer about 15 days of Mercury. A loop year gives it about 67. That is more than four times as much.
The straight run is fast here. Its median of 14.8 days is the second shortest of the twelve signs. Only Gemini is quicker. Our page on Mercury in Pisces ranks all twelve signs by share of time, with Gemini last at 7.57 percent. Cancer comes in at 7.68 percent, the third lowest.
A loop year can play out three ways. In 128 of the 251 loop years, Mercury turned back and forward again without ever leaving Cancer. In 55, it slipped back into Gemini for a while. In 68, it ran on into Leo, turned back, and came home. So about half of all Cancer loops stay whole. That is a high count. For Libra, our sister page found 111 whole loops out of 340.
Five people in eight come from a loop year
Now weigh the two kinds of year. Straight years are more than twice as common. But each one adds only about 15 days. Loop years are rarer, yet each one adds far more.
Over the 800 years, loop years hold 62.6 percent of all the time Mercury spends in Cancer. If births are spread evenly through time, about five people in eight with this Mercury were born in a loop year. The count holds over shorter spans too.
| Span of years | Share of years with a loop, and share of Cancer time in loop years. |
|---|---|
| 1600 to 2000 | 31.5 percent of years, 62.6 percent of the time. |
| 2000 to 2400 | 31.3 percent of years, 62.6 percent of the time. |
| 1900 to 2000 | 32.0 percent of years, 63.2 percent of the time. |
| 2000 to 2100 | 32.0 percent of years, 63.6 percent of the time. |
Is Mercury in Cancer more likely to be retrograde? A little. Over 1600 to 2400, Mercury is retrograde 19.16 percent of the time in all signs. Our Gemini sign page uses the same figure. With Mercury in Cancer, the share is 20.29 percent. So about one person in five with this Mercury has it retrograde, a touch more than the norm.
Loop years come in pairs
Loop years do not fall at random. Mercury laps the Sun, as seen from Earth, 22 times in just under seven years. So its turns come back to nearly the same part of the sky every six or seven years.
For Cancer, the beat is plain. Loop years came in pairs 112 times over the 800 years, and in runs of three only 9 times. Between them came four or five straight years, 61 times each. Two on, four or five off is the rule.
| Decade | Loop years for Mercury in Cancer. |
|---|---|
| 1950s | 1953 and 1954. |
| 1960s | 1960, 1961, 1967 and 1968. |
| 1970s | 1973 and 1974. |
| 1980s | 1980, 1981, 1986 and 1987. |
| 1990s | 1993, 1994 and 1999. |
| 2000s | 2000, 2006 and 2007. |
| 2010s | 2013, 2014 and 2019. |
| 2020s | 2020, 2026 and 2027. |
If your birth year is on this list, and you were born between late spring and mid August, your odds of Mercury in Cancer are high. If not, the window is short, about 14 to 19 days. You need your exact date to know.
Summer 2026: close to the longest stay there is
This year is a loop year, and a big one. Times below are in UTC, the clock of Greenwich, and in New York time. A turn at 2:00 UTC falls the evening before on the East Coast, so check the zone before you compare with a birth time.
| Event in 2026 | When it happened. |
|---|---|
| Mercury enters Cancer | June 1 at 11:55 UTC, 7:55 AM in New York. |
| Station, turns retrograde at 26 degrees of Cancer | June 29 at 17:37 UTC, 1:37 PM in New York. |
| Station, turns direct at 16 degrees of Cancer | July 23 at 22:56 UTC, 6:56 PM in New York. |
| Mercury leaves for Leo | August 9 at 16:28 UTC, 12:28 PM in New York. |
That is 69.19 days in one piece. Over the 800 years, the longest stay was 69.24 days, in 1651. The 2026 stay ranks 26th of 800. So a baby born in Cancer season this year had Mercury in Cancer for the whole of it.
2027 is the second year of the pair. Mercury comes in on May 28 at 17:07 UTC, turns back on June 10, and slips into Gemini on June 26. It turns direct there on July 4, comes back into Cancer on July 12, and leaves on August 2. That gives 49.5 days inside the sign, in two parts.
Every stay from 2020 to 2031
| Year | Mercury in Cancer, UTC with New York time. |
|---|---|
| 2020, loop | From May 28 at 18:09 UTC, 2:09 PM NY, to August 5 at 03:32 UTC, 11:32 PM NY on August 4. That is 68.4 days. |
| 2021 | From July 11 at 20:35 UTC to July 28 at 01:12 UTC, 9:12 PM NY on July 27. That is 16.2 days. |
| 2022 | From July 5 at 06:25 UTC to July 19 at 12:34 UTC. That is 14.3 days. |
| 2023 | From June 27 at 00:23 UTC, 8:23 PM NY on June 26, to July 11 at 04:10 UTC. That is 14.2 days. |
| 2024 | From June 17 at 09:06 UTC to July 2 at 12:50 UTC. That is 15.2 days. |
| 2025 | From June 8 at 22:58 UTC to June 26 at 19:09 UTC. That is 17.8 days. |
| 2026, loop | From June 1 at 11:55 UTC to August 9 at 16:28 UTC. That is 69.2 days. |
| 2027, split loop | From May 28 to June 26 at 07:23 UTC, then July 12 at 13:45 UTC to August 2. That is 49.5 days inside. |
| 2028 | From July 9 at 01:36 UTC, 9:36 PM NY on July 8, to July 24 at 01:50 UTC. That is 15.0 days. |
| 2029 | From July 1 at 12:00 UTC to July 15 at 13:36 UTC. That is 14.1 days. |
| 2030 | From June 22 at 23:56 UTC, 7:56 PM NY, to July 7 at 10:22 UTC. That is 14.4 days. |
| 2031 | From June 14 at 09:09 UTC to June 30 at 08:26 UTC. That is 16.0 days. |
Look at the drift. In the straight years from 2021 to 2025, the entry date slides back by six to ten days a year. Then a loop year resets it. The next pair after 2026 and 2027 starts in 2032.
No dignity here, and it changes nothing about the count
Traditional astrology grades each planet by sign. A planet is strong in its home sign, called its domicile, and in its sign of honor, called its exaltation. It is weak in the sign across from home, its detriment, and across from honor, its fall.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, prints the grades for Cancer in his table of essential dignities. The Moon has its home there. Jupiter is exalted there. Saturn is in detriment and Mars is in fall. Mercury gets none of the four. So in Cancer, Mercury is a guest. Its host is the Moon, the ruler of the sign.
There are two minor grades. The first is the term, a slice of each sign given to one planet. In Ptolemy’s own table, which Lilly copies, Mercury’s term in Cancer runs from 13 to 20 degrees. The Egyptian table, which Valens uses, gives Mercury 13 to 19 degrees. The second is the face, a slice of ten degrees. In Cancer, Mercury has the middle face, from 10 to 20 degrees.
Does Mercury linger in its own slice? I checked. It spends 23.4 percent of its Cancer time from 13 to 20 degrees. An even spread would give 23.3 percent. The middle face holds 33.3 percent, against a third for an even spread. So the grades say something about style. They say nothing about how common a degree is.
How to read it in your chart
The tradition reads Mercury in Cancer through its host. So the first step is to find your Moon. A Moon in a strong sign, well placed by house, gives Mercury a steady room to work in. A Moon under strain passes some of that strain to the way you think and speak.
Next, check the side of the Sun. A dusk Mercury, the more common case here, is a night planet by Ptolemy’s rule. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, treats Mercury as the planet that links one thing to the next. On the night side, that linking leans on memory and on the inner world more than on the outer scene.
Then check the house. In the fourth house, the one tied to home and roots, Mercury in Cancer talks about family and the past. In the tenth, it brings that same memory to work. Stephen Arroyo reads the water signs as signs of feeling, and Liz Greene reads Cancer through the need for a safe base. Both treat the sign as a style, not a fate.
Demetra George adds a useful habit. Read a planet by its condition, not by its sign alone. For this placement, that means the Moon, the house, the sect and any turn back in the sky. The sign only sets the tone.
In daily life, people with this Mercury do well to write things down. The mind holds the mood of a talk with ease. A short note after a call keeps the facts as well.
The method, so you can redo it
A number no one can check is worth nothing. Here is how I got these.
I used the astronomy-engine library. For each moment, I took the apparent place of Mercury and the Sun, seen from the center of the Earth. I turned each into a tropical longitude, measured along the path of the Sun from the spring equinox of that date.
For the stays, I stepped through time every six hours, from January 1, 1600 to January 1, 2400. Each time Mercury changed degree or turned, or the Sun changed sign, I halved the step until the moment was exact to well under a second. Then I added up the exact time in each case. I merged two parts into one stay when the gap was under 60 days. That gave 2,522 backward turns and 800 stays in Cancer. For the sides of the Sun, I read both places every 0.05 days inside each stay.
For the check, I used a second route with no search at all. I took one position per day from JPL Horizons, the NASA ephemeris, over the same 800 years, and simply counted. Horizons gave 7.68 percent of all time in Cancer, 20.27 percent of it retrograde, and 31.5 percent of stays with a loop. The Sun sign split matched to 0.01 percent, and the dusk share came out at 55.7 percent. For 2020 to 2031, I pulled Horizons positions every ten minutes. Every entry and exit matched to within five minutes, and every station to within ten.
Why 800 years? Short windows can mislead. Mercury’s loops shift from year to year, and the orbit turns slowly. A long window evens this out.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have Mercury in Cancer if my Sun is not in Cancer?
Yes, if your Sun is in Gemini or Leo. Over 1600 to 2400, 28.6 percent of people with Mercury in Cancer have a Gemini Sun, and 18.0 percent have a Leo Sun.
Why do more Geminis than Leos have Mercury in Cancer?
In this sign, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun 55.7 percent of the time. When it runs ahead, the Sun is still one sign back, in Gemini.
How long is Mercury in Cancer each year?
About 14 to 19 days in a straight year. In a loop year, the stay runs 58 to 69 days from first entry to last exit.
Is Mercury in Cancer rare?
A little below a fair share. Mercury spends 7.68 percent of all time in Cancer, against 8.33 percent for one sign in twelve. Only Gemini and Taurus get less.
When was Mercury last in Cancer?
From June 1 to August 9, 2026, in UTC. That 69-day stay ranks 26th of 800 over 1600 to 2400. The next visit starts on May 28, 2027, at 17:07 UTC.
Does Mercury have any dignity in Cancer?
None of the four main ones. It has only a term, 13 to 20 degrees in Ptolemy’s table, and the middle face, 10 to 20 degrees. The Moon is its host.
