Gemini and Cancer compatibility is a story about two next-door signs. The old books give them two verdicts that seem to clash. Ptolemy puts them among the signs that are turned away from each other. William Lilly, reading degree by degree, makes each one the mirror of the other.
The mirror is not just a symbol. It is about daylight. We timed the day in New York for every Gemini and Cancer birth date. In about 1 couple in 3, the two partners were born on days within 5 minutes of the same length. Only one other pair of signs comes that close.
This guide shows each step, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Gemini and Cancer couple? | About 1 random US couple in 66, or 1.51 percent. |
| Where does it rank among the 78 pairs? | Eighth, in the top tenth. |
| Did real marriages favor the pair? | By about 0.07 percent, which is chance. |
| What does Ptolemy call two signs side by side? | Disjunct, or turned away from each other. |
| How many couples were born to days of the same length? | About 1 in 3, within 5 minutes, in New York. |
| How many share a Mercury sign? | About 2 couples in 9, close to three times the usual rate. |
How many US couples are Gemini and Cancer?
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Gemini season runs from about May 21 to June 20. Cancer season runs from about June 21 to July 22. The exact hour moves a little each year, which is why our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.
Those border dates matter for couples too: our page on Gemini and Gemini compatibility finds that about 1 Gemini couple in 7 has a partner born on one.
The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things set the count. The first is the length of each season. The Earth moves slowest in early July, so the Sun takes longer to cross the summer signs. The second is how many babies are born each day. In the US, births climb through the summer.
Here are the shares, from 62.2 million US births by exact date.
| Sign | Share of US births, 2000 to 2014 | Rank among the twelve signs. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.96 percent | First. |
| Cancer | 8.84 percent | Third. |
| Gemini | 8.56 percent | Fourth. |
| Capricorn | 7.63 percent | Last. |
| If all signs were equal | 8.33 percent | No rank. |
A couple can be a Gemini woman with a Cancer man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Gemini share times the Cancer share. That gives 1.51 percent, or about 1 random US couple in 66. If all signs were equal, it would be 1 in 72.
There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Gemini and Cancer come eighth. The top of the list is made of summer pairs, led by Leo and Virgo at 1 in 62. The pair at the far end of Cancer’s year, Cancer and Capricorn, sits near the bottom at 1 in 74.
None of this comes from the stars. It comes from the calendar and from when US babies are born. A common pair is not a better pair. It is a pair you are more likely to meet.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain question. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict?
His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version of it in March 2008.
We pulled the Gemini and Cancer cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you get if people pick partners with no regard to sign.
| Couples in the 2001 census | Found | Expected by chance | Gap. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer husband, Gemini wife | 71,566 couples | 71,423 couples | 0.2 percent more. |
| Gemini husband, Cancer wife | 71,251 couples | 71,289 couples | 0.05 percent fewer. |
| Both ways together | 142,817 couples | 142,712 couples | 0.07 percent more, about 100 couples. |
One more detail makes that tiny gap even smaller. Voas notes that cells next to the same-sign cells come out a bit high. Some people still gave the same birth month for both partners, and a month can spill into the next sign. Gemini and Cancer are next-door signs, so they get a small push from those errors. Even so, their gap is the second smallest of the twelve next-door pairs.
Next-door signs: what Ptolemy calls turned away
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book 1 he lists the ways two signs can be linked. The main one is the aspect, an angle between two points that astrologers read as a link. Ptolemy counts four: 60, 90, 120 and 180 degrees apart.
Gemini and Cancer sit 30 degrees apart, one sign. That is none of the four. Ptolemy has a name for such pairs in chapter 16. He calls them “disjunct” and “alien.” Signs one apart, he writes, “are as it were averted from one another.” Averted means turned away, like two people standing back to back.
There is a second reason in the old scheme. Signs take turns as masculine and feminine. Gemini is masculine and Cancer is feminine, so two signs side by side never match in kind. Ptolemy says the good aspects join signs of the same kind. Modern astrologers do use the 30 degree angle. They call it a semi-sextile and treat it as a minor link.
By degree, the two Suns are not always 30 degrees apart. A Gemini Sun can sit anywhere in its 30 degrees, and so can a Cancer Sun. So the gap runs from almost zero to almost 60 degrees. The leeway astrologers allow around an exact angle is called the orb. Across all pairs we have measured, about 19 percent of couples fall within 3 degrees of the exact angle and 36 percent within 6. The same holds here.
The mirror: two ways to read the signs that behold
Ptolemy’s chapter 15 gives another kind of link. He pairs the parts of the sky that are “equally removed from the same tropical sign.” A tropical sign is one where the Sun turns back, at a solstice. When the Sun is in either part of such a pair, “the days are equal to the days, the nights to the nights.” He says these parts “behold” one another. To behold means to see.
Gemini ends at the summer solstice, the longest day. Cancer starts there. So the two signs fold onto each other around that day, like the two halves of an open book. How you count decides whether they behold each other.
| Way of counting | Who uses it | Gemini’s partner | Cancer’s partner. |
|---|---|---|---|
| By whole signs | The notes of the Robbins edition, note 83 | Leo | None, it is “left without mates.” |
| By degree | William Lilly, Christian Astrology, 1647 | Cancer | Gemini. |
In whole signs, Cancer touches the solstice itself, so nothing mirrors it. Gemini pairs with Leo, one sign further out. If you use that reading, Gemini and Cancer have no tie at all. That is why chapter 16 calls them disjunct.
Lilly reads it by degree. Each degree has a mirror point on the far side of the solstice, which he calls its antiscion. Gemini 10 mirrors Cancer 20. Gemini 25 mirrors Cancer 5. Every degree of Gemini has its mirror in Cancer, and none anywhere else. Our page on the pair at both solstices gives the same two readings for Cancer.
Measured: born to the same daylight
Ptolemy’s own reason for the link is day length. So we tested it on real days. Day length here means the time from sunrise to sunset. We used New York, near the middle of the US by latitude. Here are some mirror dates for 2026, in New York time.
| Gemini date and degree | Day length | Mirror Cancer date and degree | Day length. |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 20, Gemini 0 | 14 hours 38 minutes | July 22, end of Cancer | 14 hours 37 minutes. |
| May 31, Gemini 10 | 14 hours 53 minutes | July 12, Cancer 20 | 14 hours 52 minutes. |
| June 5, Gemini 15 | 14 hours 58 minutes | July 6, Cancer 15 | 14 hours 58 minutes. |
| June 10, Gemini 20 | 15 hours 2 minutes | July 1, Cancer 10 | 15 hours 2 minutes. |
| June 20, Gemini 29 | 15 hours 6 minutes | June 22, Cancer 1 | 15 hours 6 minutes. |
The two signs cover the exact same span of daylight. In New York, it runs from 14 hours 37 minutes to 15 hours 6 minutes. That is a span of just 29 minutes for a whole month.
The span is so narrow because the days barely change near the solstice. In late June, the day gains or loses only a few seconds each day. So any Gemini and any Cancer were born to days of close to the same length. We counted how close, for every pair of birth dates in the US file.
| Day lengths within | Gemini and Cancer couples | Taurus and Leo, the next mirror pair out. |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | 17 to 19 percent | 6 to 7 percent. |
| 5 minutes | 35 to 37 percent, about 1 in 3 | 14 to 15 percent. |
| 10 minutes | 58 to 59 percent | 27 to 28 percent. |
Each range gives our two counts, one by births and one by time. Taurus and Leo mirror each other in the same way, yet they match far less. Their span of daylight is 68 minutes wide, since they sit farther from the solstice. The only pair that matches Gemini and Cancer is Sagittarius and Capricorn, around the shortest day of the year.
Now look at Gemini and Leo, the pair the whole-sign reading joins. Their day lengths meet only at one edge. Within 5 minutes, it happens in about 1 couple in 200. So the degree reading is the one that fits Ptolemy’s own test of equal days. The whole-sign reading keeps the list tidy, but it loses the reason.
Check your own couple in two minutes
- Find each partner’s Sun degree on any free chart site.
- Add the two degrees together.
- A sum near 30 means your Suns are mirror points.
- A sum within 3 of 30 puts you in about 1 couple in 5.
- For day length, look up sunrise and sunset for each birthday in your city.
In the old style of reading, mirror points act like a hidden link. They are not an aspect, so the two partners do not look straight at each other. Yet they share the same light. It is a quiet tie, and it is common for this pair.
The rulers: Mercury lives next door to the Moon
In the old books, each sign has a planet that rules it, as a host rules a home. Mercury rules Gemini. The Moon rules Cancer. Our Gemini sign guide and our Cancer sign guide cover each ruler in depth.
Ptolemy explains the layout in chapter 17. The Sun and Moon took the two warmest signs, Leo and Cancer. Mercury, he writes, “never is farther removed from the sun than one sign in either direction.” So it got the signs right next to the homes of the Sun and Moon. Gemini is Mercury’s home on the Moon’s side.
Chapter 18 adds a quiet link. Ptolemy splits the signs into four groups of three, called triangles. Gemini is in the air group, ruled by Saturn by day and Mercury by night. Cancer is in the water group, led by Mars, with the Moon by night and Venus by day. So each sign’s own planet takes the night shift in its group.
The Mercury test: a shared sign in 2 couples in 9
Mercury is the planet astrologers link with talk and daily thinking. One simple check is whether two partners have Mercury in the same sign. Mercury never strays far from the Sun. Over 800 years, the widest gap we found was 27.8 degrees, less than one sign.
So a Gemini’s Mercury can only be in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. A Cancer’s Mercury can only be in Gemini, Cancer or Leo. Their ranges overlap in two signs, not one.
| Where Mercury sits | Share of Gemini Suns | Share of Cancer Suns. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | 26.6 percent | None, never. |
| Gemini | 47.9 percent | 20.6 percent. |
| Cancer | 25.6 percent | 47.6 percent. |
| Leo | None, never | 31.8 percent. |
Now pair them up. Both can have Mercury in Gemini, which happens in 9.8 percent of couples. Both can have it in Cancer, which happens in 12.2 percent. Together that is 22 percent, or about 2 couples in 9.
If Mercury could be anywhere, two people would share a Mercury sign about 1 time in 12. So this pair shares one at close to three times that rate. Compare the pair on Cancer’s other side, where Cancer and Virgo share a Mercury sign in only 1 couple in 22.
A shared sign is still a loose test. Two points can be in the same sign but 29 degrees apart. So we also counted the couples whose two Mercury points sit within 8 degrees, a link called a conjunction. That is 11.6 percent, or about 1 couple in 9.
The Moon, Cancer’s ruler, plays by other rules. It goes around the whole sky in about 27 days, so it can be in any sign in any month. About 1 Gemini in 12 has the Moon in Cancer. About 1 Cancer in 12 has it in Gemini.
Air and water, mutable and cardinal
The old books sort each sign three ways. Here is how the two line up.
| Trait on the usual lists | Gemini | Cancer. |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Air, hot and moist in the old theory | Water, cold and moist in the old theory. |
| Mode | Mutable, a sign that ends a season | Cardinal, a sign that starts one. |
| Gender in the old books | Masculine | Feminine. |
| Ruler | Mercury | The Moon. |
| Place in the year | The last month of spring | The first month of summer. |
The two share one quality in the old theory: both are moist. One is hot and one is cold. Gemini closes spring and adjusts to what comes next. Cancer opens summer and likes to set the course. So the old picture is a sign that finishes beside a sign that begins, meeting at the turn of the year’s light.
What the pair looks like in daily life
These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know. They describe two styles, drawn from the sign books.
Gemini, as a mutable air sign, leads with talk. Questions. News. Two plans at once. Feelings sorted out loud. Gemini wants room to move and someone quick to trade ideas with.
Cancer, as a cardinal water sign, leads with care. Home first. Help that shows in food and warmth. Needs said through mood more than words. Cancer wants to feel safe before it opens up.
The Mercury count fits this sketch in one way. About 2 couples in 9 share a Mercury sign, so many of these pairs do talk in the same key. The gap is less about words and more about pace.
| Where it snags | What Gemini feels | What Cancer feels | A small step that helps. |
|---|---|---|---|
| A hard day | Wants to talk it through | Wants quiet comfort first | Gemini asks: talk now, or later? |
| Plans | Likes to keep them open | Likes to know the shape of the week | Fix one evening, leave the rest free. |
| Friends | Likes a wide circle | Likes a small, close one | Take turns picking the next outing. |
| Hurt | Moves on fast | Holds on longer | Gemini names the hurt before moving on. |
None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with different styles can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.
Two people can share a temperament and still court on opposite terms, the gap examined in Gemini and Cancer Venus placements.
The rest of the chart counts for more
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. For this pair, three stand out: Mercury, the Moon and Venus.
Voas saw one reply coming: that only a full birth chart can say anything. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show up in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map.
How we measured
You can redo every number on this page.
Birth shares. We used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. Each birth day was placed on the sky with the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. The chance for two different signs is two times the product of their shares.
Day length. Route one took every birth date from 2000 to 2014 and timed sunrise and sunset in New York with the astronomy-engine code. Each pair of dates was weighted by its births. Route two used a plain formula from the Sun’s height in the sky, with a Sun position every 5 hours and 17 minutes from 1600 to 2400. Both routes count sunrise from the top edge of the Sun, with the usual bend of light in the air. They agree within 2 points.
Mercury and the Moon. Route one placed the Sun, Mercury and the Moon every 3 hours from 1600 to 2400. Route two used a step of 5 hours and 17 minutes, starting 37 minutes later, so the two sets of moments do not line up. They agree within 0.1 points. The chance of a shared Mercury sign multiplies the two shares, since partners are born at unrelated times.
Marriages. The census counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, built from census table C0792. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. The figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.
Questions people ask
Are Gemini and Cancer compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Gemini and Cancer couples within 0.07 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair is read two ways: turned away by sign, and mirror images by degree.
How common is a Gemini and Cancer couple?
About 1 random US couple in 66, or 1.51 percent, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks eighth of all 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.
Why are Gemini and Cancer called mirror signs?
They sit on either side of the summer solstice. Each Gemini degree has a mirror degree in Cancer with the same day length. In New York, about 1 couple in 3 was born on days within 5 minutes of the same length.
What aspect do Gemini and Cancer form?
They are one sign apart, 30 degrees. Ptolemy counts no aspect there and calls such signs disjunct, or averted. Modern astrologers call the angle a semi-sextile, a minor link.
Do Gemini and Cancer share a Mercury sign?
In about 2 couples in 9. Both can have Mercury in Gemini or both in Cancer. That is close to three times the rate for two random people.
