Capricorn Venus and Pisces Venus Compatibility: The Rarest Venus Sextiles the Exalted One

Capricorn Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility joins the two ends of the Venus scale. Venus in Capricorn is the rarest Venus sign over eight centuries of sky. Venus in Pisces is the one sign where old astrology says she is exalted, or honored. The two signs sit two apart, a friendly link called a sextile.

This guide explains what that mix means, with numbers we measured over the years 1600 to 2400. It covers how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and what Ptolemy and William Lilly wrote about Venus in each sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.

A sextile between earth and water

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you in and how you show care. It is not your Sun sign, the one you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Capricorn and one with Venus in Pisces.

Capricorn is the tenth sign and Pisces the twelfth. Count from one to the other and you get two signs, or 60 degrees. That angle is the sextile, which the tradition reads as an easy, helpful link. Capricorn is an earth sign and Pisces a water sign. Capricorn is cardinal, which means it opens a season, here winter. Pisces is mutable, which means it closes one, again winter.

So both Venus signs sit in the same season, one at its start and one at its end. Only two of the 78 Venus pairs join earth and water this way, a cardinal sign with a mutable one. The other is Cancer with Virgo.

The rarest Venus and the exalted Venus

Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to turn backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so we used eight full centuries to smooth it out.

Venus sign Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 Rank out of twelve.
Venus in Capricorn 8.04 percent Twelfth, the rarest.
Venus in Pisces 8.32 percent Seventh, near the middle.
Most common: Venus in Cancer 8.62 percent First of the twelve.
Flat share, if all were equal 8.33 percent One in twelve.

The word rarest needs care. The gap between the top and the bottom is under 0.6 points. Venus in Capricorn is last, but it still turns up in about one chart in twelve. The Sun moves fastest through Capricorn, since Earth is closest to the Sun in early January. Venus, tied to the Sun, spends a little less time there as well.

Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Capricorn and the other Venus in Pisces? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.34 percent, or one couple in 75. That ranks 60th of the 78 pairs.

How the old books rank each Venus

Old astrology ranks each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. In the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy gives Venus two homes, Taurus and Libra. He also names one sign where she is exalted, which means honored like a guest of high rank. That sign is Pisces.

Ptolemy ties the choice to the seasons. Venus, in his scheme, is warm and moist. Pisces opens the moist season that leads into spring, so her nature grows there. Our guide to Venus in Pisces shows that later authors set her peak at the 27th degree, a band only about one Pisces Venus in ten reaches.

Capricorn is a quieter case. Venus holds none of the four major ranks there: no home, no exaltation, no exile and no fall. She keeps two minor ones. In a daytime chart, Venus rules the earth signs as a group, a rank called triplicity. She also owns a small band of degrees in the sign, called her terms. Our guide to Venus in Capricorn explains why that makes her quiet, not weak.

So the ranks are uneven. One Venus holds a seat of honor. The other is a guest with a few small rights. A rank is a label from the old books. It is not a grade for a person.

One host sits at its lowest

Each sign has a ruling planet, its host. In the old system, Saturn rules Capricorn and Jupiter rules Pisces. These two slow planets are the great timekeepers of the tradition. Their meetings, every twenty years or so, marked eras for astrologers of the past.

Look at where each host stands in the partner’s sign. Saturn holds no rank in Pisces. He is a plain guest there. Jupiter, though, is in fall in Capricorn. Fall is the sign across from a planet’s exaltation, where it is at its lowest. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, so his fall is Capricorn.

Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), read a planet in fall as one that acts with less standing than it would like. Put simply, the host of the Pisces Venus loses some footing in the Capricorn partner’s world. The host of the Capricorn Venus keeps his footing in the Pisces world. Astrologers who read hosts this way see an uneven give and take between hope and caution.

What Ptolemy says about the sextile

In Book I, chapter 13, Ptolemy names the aspects, the set angles between signs. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is gender. A sextile joins two signs of the same kind. Capricorn, an earth sign, and Pisces, a water sign, are both feminine in his scheme.

Ptolemy adds two more links in chapters 14 and 15. Signs that command and obey sit at equal distance on each side of the spring point. Signs that behold each other sit at equal distance on each side of the summer point, so they share days of the same length. Scholars read these two rules in two ways. One way uses whole signs. The other uses exact degrees, as Lilly did with mirror points called antiscia. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, discusses both readings in his notes.

By whole signs, Capricorn obeys Cancer and has no partner for equal days. Pisces obeys Taurus and beholds Scorpio. Neither list includes the other sign. By degrees, we counted couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. For this pair the count is zero. Both readings agree. The sextile is the only classical thread, and it is a friendly one.

Is the sextile exact in degrees?

Two Venuses two signs apart can be anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. The sextile is exact at 60 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

Orb allowed Couples with an exact sextile.
Within 3 degrees 19.0 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36.0 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46.2 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 55.5 percent of couples.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. One edge is worth a look. With an 8 degree orb, 3.5 percent of these couples form a square in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 1 degree of Capricorn and at 29 degrees of Pisces. The gap is 88 degrees, close to a square. By sign it is a sextile. In degrees it is a tense link.

Which Sun signs do these partners have?

Seen from Earth, Venus stays close to the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two signs next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

Sun sign Share of Venus in Capricorn people Share of Venus in Pisces people.
Scorpio 9.6 percent None at all.
Sagittarius 28.8 percent None at all.
Capricorn 23.2 percent 9.4 percent.
Aquarius 29.0 percent 28.6 percent.
Pisces 9.4 percent 23.3 percent.
Aries None at all 29.6 percent.
Taurus None at all 9.2 percent.

Look at the Aquarius row. It is a top choice on both sides, at close to 29 percent each. Neither Venus sign is Aquarius, yet an Aquarius Sun sits between them. About half of these couples, 49.3 percent, include at least one Aquarius Sun.

The lists share three Sun signs: Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Add the three cases and the partners share a Sun sign in 12.7 percent of couples, about one in eight. Two Aquarius Suns account for 8.3 points of that. That is one couple in 12 where both partners are Aquarius by Sun and neither has Venus there.

The 12.7 percent is not unique to this pair. Every Venus pair two signs apart shares a Sun sign in 12.5 to 13 percent of couples. The Aquarius center is the part that belongs to this pair.

The likeliest single mix is an Aquarius Sun with a Pisces Sun, at 9.4 percent of these couples. Capricorn with Aquarius follows at 9.4 percent, then Aries with Aquarius at 8.6 percent.

Angle between the two Suns Share of these couples.
Sextile, two signs apart 24.9 percent of couples.
Next-door signs 24.3 percent of couples.
Square, three signs apart 19.0 percent of couples.
Trine, four signs apart 12.9 percent of couples.
Same Sun sign 12.7 percent of couples.
Quincunx, five signs apart 5.5 percent of couples.
Opposition, six signs apart 0.9 percent of couples.

So one couple in four has a sextile by Sun as well as by Venus. For the other three, the Sun story and the Venus story differ. A full reading looks at both.

A Capricorn and a Pisces by Sun sign is not this couple

Many readers land here because they are a Capricorn and a Pisces by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.

A Capricorn Sun has Venus in Capricorn about 23 percent of the time. A Pisces Sun has Venus in Pisces about 23 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.4 percent of these Sun couples, or one in 19. The Sun-sign match has its own page: Pisces and Capricorn compatibility.

From the Venus side, 41.1 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 74th of the 78 pairs. A birth chart shows your Venus sign in a few seconds. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.

Reading the pair the old way

Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition, and modern writers such as Liz Greene and Demetra George, read Venus in these two signs.

Venus in Capricorn loves by building. It shows care through effort, time and follow-through. It wants proof before it commits, and it keeps its word. Venus in Pisces loves by giving. It forgives fast, senses moods before they are named, and wants a bond that feels larger than daily life.

  • Form and feeling. Capricorn gives love a shape. Pisces gives it a soul.
  • Plans and dreams. Capricorn asks how. Pisces asks why not.
  • Reserve and warmth. Capricorn shows care through deeds. Pisces shows it through tenderness.
  • Limits. Capricorn sets them with ease. Pisces struggles to say no.
  • After a fight. Capricorn goes quiet and fixes the problem. Pisces wants the hurt heard first.

Take this reading as an invitation to talk about how each of you shows love. It is not a verdict on the couple. The moods behind it are covered in Capricorn and Pisces Moon compatibility.

What the evidence says

The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. In a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages, he used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from data errors.

Voas tested Sun signs only. As far as we know, no one has run such a test for Venus signs. So the figures on this page describe the sky, not the fate of a couple.

How we measured it

We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.

Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs multiply each partner’s Sun-sign shares. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
