Capricorn Moon and Pisces Moon Compatibility: A Kind Sextile Where Jupiter Falls in Saturn’s Sign

Capricorn Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility rests on a sextile, one of the two soft angles in the old books. The signs sit two steps apart on the wheel. Earth meets water, and both signs share the same polarity. So far, this reads as an easy match.

The hosts tell a harder story. Saturn rules Capricorn and Jupiter rules Pisces. In Capricorn, Jupiter is in its fall, the weakest of its four special places. So the Pisces Moon’s host would feel low in the Capricorn Moon’s world. The reverse is not true: Saturn in Pisces is a plain guest.

This page reads the kind angle and the uneven hosts, with numbers where they help. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

The pair at a glance

Question Short answer.
Distance between the signs Two signs, a sextile of 60 degrees.
Elements and modes Earth and water, cardinal and mutable.
Rulers Saturn for Capricorn, Jupiter for Pisces.
Moon strength In exile in Capricorn, a plain guest in Pisces.
The hosts Jupiter falls in Capricorn, Saturn has no major rank in Pisces.
How common is the pair? About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs.
How close is the sextile? Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples.

What a Moon sign shows

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.

Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Capricorn and Pisces are two signs apart, with Aquarius between them. The angle is 60 degrees, a sextile. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.

Why Ptolemy called the sextile kind

Ptolemy, the Greek scholar who wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, lists four angles between signs. They are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. In Book 1, he calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is simple. Both link signs of the same kind, all feminine or all masculine.

Capricorn and Pisces are both feminine signs, in the old terms. So are all earth and water signs. Read as a symbol, the two Moons share a basic tone. Both take in before they give out. Both feel first and speak later.

Among the 78 Moon pairs, only two join earth and water by sextile between a cardinal sign and a mutable one. This is one. The other is Virgo with Cancer. The cardinal sign starts things. The mutable sign adapts and lets go.

An exiled Moon beside a plain guest

Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, these are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio.

So the Capricorn Moon is in exile, across from its home. The Moon is soft and quick to change. Capricorn is cold, dry, and slow. Ptolemy does give the earth signs to the Moon by night. So a Capricorn Moon born at night keeps a small rank, called triplicity, in its exile. Our page on the Moon in Capricorn explains what exile does and does not mean.

Pisces holds none of the Moon’s four major signs. The Moon there is a plain guest, neither helped nor hurt. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, gives it no minor rank there either. Our page on the Moon in Pisces times every pass of the Moon through that sign.

Exile is not a verdict on a person. It rates the Moon’s ease, not anyone’s worth. Here, one partner starts from a hard seat and one from a neutral seat.

Where Jupiter falls

Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Saturn hosts the Capricorn Moon. Jupiter hosts the Pisces Moon. In old texts, Saturn stands for limits, time, and duty. Jupiter stands for growth, faith, and generous hope.

Ptolemy puts Jupiter’s exaltation in Cancer. Its fall is the sign across, which is Capricorn. Lilly lists it the same way. So Jupiter, the Pisces Moon’s host, is at its weakest in the Capricorn Moon’s sign.

Saturn, the Capricorn Moon’s host, has no major rank in Pisces. It is a guest there, neither honored nor shamed. So the balance between the hosts is uneven. One host sinks in the other’s sign. The other simply visits.

Host Rules Standing in the partner’s sign.
Saturn Capricorn No major rank in Pisces.
Jupiter Pisces In its fall in Capricorn.

Read as a symbol, the Capricorn Moon’s world is where the Pisces Moon’s hope gets tested. A plan, a budget, or a deadline can make a Pisces dream look small. The Capricorn Moon means no harm by it. Its sign simply measures things. The Pisces Moon needs to hear that a dream can survive a plan.

Two other planets tip the scale back. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, and Venus is exalted in Pisces. Those links belong to the Sun-sign and Venus readings of this pair, and our pages on them go further.

What each partner brings

Capricorn is earth, the element of the body and of things you can hold. It is cardinal, so it opens a season: the northern winter. A Capricorn Moon calms down by taking charge. It makes a plan and works through it. It shows love by being there, on time, year after year.

Pisces is water, the element of feeling and bonds. It is mutable, so it closes a season and lets it go: the end of winter. A Pisces Moon calms down by drifting, resting, and taking in art or music. It shows love through care, a soft word, and a sense of what you did not say.

The pair works best when each lends the other its gift. The Capricorn Moon gives the Pisces Moon a safe shore and a clear plan. The Pisces Moon gives the Capricorn Moon rest, mercy, and room to feel.

  • The Capricorn Moon asks what the dream is before it asks what it costs.
  • The Pisces Moon says a need in plain words, instead of hoping it is guessed.
  • Both set one limit together, so no one has to be the bad cop.
  • Both keep a quiet evening each week with no goals at all.

Is the sextile exact?

A sextile by sign is not always 60 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn and a Moon at 29 degrees of Pisces are two signs apart. Yet the real gap is 88 degrees, close to a square. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.

Orb allowed Share of couples with a true sextile.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 56 percent of couples.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. So with an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have a true sextile. About 3.6 percent have a square across the sign line instead. For those couples, the kind angle by sign is a tense angle by degree.

Ptolemy names two quieter ties between signs. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. His list can be read two ways.

  • By degree, as Lilly read it, signs behold each other when they mirror across the solstice points. They command and obey when they mirror across the equinox points. Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius and Gemini. Pisces mirrors Libra and Aries. So these two do not mirror each other.
  • By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), Capricorn has no partner that beholds it. Cancer commands Capricorn, and Taurus commands Pisces. There is no link between Capricorn and Pisces.

So the pair has no extra tie on either reading. It does not need one. The sextile is already a link on Ptolemy’s main list.

New moon and full moon births

A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.

Moon sign New moon births, Sun in the same sign Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign.
Capricorn Moon 7.94 percent, Sun in Capricorn 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer.
Pisces Moon 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo.

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle, so the Sun seems to move fastest in early January. From 1600 to 2400, it spends about 29.4 days in Capricorn, its shortest stay, and about 30.0 days in Pisces. It spends about 31.5 days in Cancer and 30.9 days in Virgo. More days facing the Sun means more full moon births.

In a couple, 16.09 percent include at least one full moon birth. That puts the pair 8th of the 78. And 15.37 percent include at least one new moon birth, which puts it 71st. The lean comes mostly from the Capricorn side. The gap is under one point. It is real in the sky, but it is not a rule about people.

A few hours can decide the sign

The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A Capricorn Moon born late in the day could be an Aquarius Moon. A Pisces Moon born early could be an Aquarius Moon too.

Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. If either of you was born on a day the Moon changed sign, check the hour before you read on.

How common is a Capricorn Moon and Pisces Moon couple?

The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.

How we measured

We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.

Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. The Sun’s days per sign are averages over 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.

What the research says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.

So the kind sextile is not a promise, and the fallen host is not a warning. They are symbols. A Capricorn Moon and a Pisces Moon both give more than they show. The symbols point to where the shore and the sea help each other, and where hope needs a gentler hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are a Capricorn Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as a sextile of earth and water, an angle Ptolemy called harmonious. The hosts are less even, since Jupiter falls in Capricorn. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.

Why is Jupiter in its fall in Capricorn?

Ptolemy puts Jupiter’s exaltation in Cancer, and the fall is the sign opposite the exaltation. That sign is Capricorn. Jupiter rules Pisces, so the Pisces Moon’s host is weak in the Capricorn Moon’s sign.

Is the Moon strong in Pisces?

The Moon has no major rank in Pisces. It is a plain guest there, neither helped nor hurt. In Capricorn, the Moon is in exile, because Capricorn faces Cancer, the Moon’s home.

How common is a Capricorn Moon and Pisces Moon couple?

About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.

Could my Moon be in Aquarius instead?

Yes, if you were born on a day the Moon moved between Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine.
