Aquarius Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility joins two signs that stand side by side. In the old books, though, they share no link at all. Ptolemy called signs like these disjunct: they cannot see each other. Yet the sky ties these two partners in another way. In about one couple in five, they were born under the same Sun sign.
This guide explains both facts with numbers we measured over the years 1600 to 2400. It covers how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and what Ptolemy and William Lilly wrote about Venus in each sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.
Neighbors at the end of the zodiac
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you in and how you show care. It is not your Sun sign, the one you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Aquarius and one with Venus in Pisces.
Aquarius is the eleventh sign and Pisces the twelfth. They sit one sign apart, or 30 degrees. That gap has a modern name, the semi-sextile, but it was not an aspect for Ptolemy. Aquarius is an air sign and Pisces a water sign. Aquarius is fixed, which means it holds the middle of a season. Pisces is mutable, which means it closes one. Both sit in winter, by the calendar of the Northern Hemisphere.
Out of all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only one that joins a fixed air sign with a mutable water sign one step away. The two signs differ in element, in mode and in gender. They share only a border.
How common is each Venus?
Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to turn backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so we used eight full centuries to smooth it out.
| Venus sign | Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank out of twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Aquarius | 8.16 percent | Tenth, in the lower part. |
| Venus in Pisces | 8.32 percent | Seventh, near the middle. |
| Most common: Venus in Cancer | 8.62 percent | First of the twelve. |
| Rarest: Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | Last of the twelve. |
The spread from top to bottom is under 0.6 points. Venus in Aquarius sits a little below one in twelve, but no Venus sign is truly rare.
Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Aquarius and the other Venus in Pisces? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.36 percent, or one couple in 74. That ranks 52nd of the 78 pairs.
Signs that cannot see each other
In Book I of the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy lists the ways two signs can be linked. There are four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Then come two special links. Signs that command and obey sit at equal distance on each side of the spring point. Signs that behold each other sit at equal distance on each side of the summer point, so they share days of the same length.
In chapter 16, Ptolemy names the rest. Signs with none of these ties he calls disjunct, or alien. They sit one sign apart or five signs apart. Later authors say such signs are in aversion: they turn their backs on each other. Aquarius and Pisces are one of these pairs.
Scholars read the special links in two ways. One way uses whole signs. The other uses exact degrees, as Lilly did in Christian Astrology (1647) with mirror points called antiscia. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, discusses both readings in his notes. We checked this pair both ways.
- By whole signs, Aquarius obeys Gemini and beholds Sagittarius. Pisces obeys Taurus and beholds Scorpio. Neither sign appears on the other’s list.
- By degrees, we counted couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. For this pair the count is zero.
Both readings agree. This pair has no classical tie at all on either reading. The tradition would say these two Venuses do not look at each other. It does not say they cannot love each other. It says any bond has to come from the rest of the two charts.
One Venus honored, one Venus a guest
Old astrology ranks each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. Ptolemy gives Venus two homes, Taurus and Libra. He also names one sign where she is exalted, which means honored like a guest of high rank. That sign is Pisces.
Ptolemy ties the choice to the seasons. Venus, in his scheme, is warm and moist. Pisces opens the moist season that leads into spring, so her nature grows there. Our guide to Venus in Pisces shows that later authors set her peak at the 27th degree, a band only about one Pisces Venus in ten reaches.
Aquarius is a plainer case. Venus holds none of the four major ranks there: no home, no exaltation, no exile and no fall. She keeps one minor right, a small band of degrees in the sign called her terms. Astrologers call a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin for wanderer. Our guide to Venus in Aquarius reads this placement in two ways, both of them fair.
Two hosts who neither help nor harm
Each sign has a ruling planet, its host. In the old system, Saturn rules Aquarius and Jupiter rules Pisces. Saturn holds no rank in Pisces, and Jupiter holds no rank in Aquarius. Neither host is lifted or pulled down in the partner’s sign.
That makes this pair neutral on the host side. Compare the Gemini and Pisces Venus pair, where each host sits in exile in the other’s sign. Here, Saturn and Jupiter are simply guests.
Modern astrologers add Uranus to Aquarius and Neptune to Pisces. Those two outer planets traded signs from 2003 to 2011. That story belongs to the Sun signs, and we tell it in Pisces and Aquarius compatibility.
How close are the two Venuses in degrees?
Two Venuses one sign apart can be anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The semi-sextile is exact at 30 degrees. The allowed gap around an exact angle is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.
| Orb allowed | Couples with an exact semi-sextile. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19.0 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36.0 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46.2 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 55.5 percent of couples. |
These values are close to the same for every Venus pair. The edges are more telling. With an 8 degree orb, 7.2 percent of these couples form a true aspect in degrees: a conjunction or a sextile. Say Venus sits at 29 degrees of Aquarius and at 1 degree of Pisces. The gap is 2 degrees. By sign the two are averse. In the sky they stand side by side, and many astrologers would read that as a conjunction.
Same Sun sign in one couple in five
Seen from Earth, Venus stays close to the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two signs next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.
| Sun sign | Share of Venus in Aquarius people | Share of Venus in Pisces people. |
|---|---|---|
| Sagittarius | 9.7 percent | None at all. |
| Capricorn | 28.5 percent | 9.4 percent. |
| Aquarius | 23.1 percent | 28.6 percent. |
| Pisces | 29.5 percent | 23.3 percent. |
| Aries | 9.3 percent | 29.6 percent. |
| Taurus | None at all | 9.2 percent. |
The two lists share four Sun signs: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries. So the partners can match by Sun in four ways. Add them up and you get 18.9 percent of these couples, about one in five. Pisces Suns give 6.9 points of that, Aquarius Suns 6.6, Aries Suns 2.7 and Capricorn Suns 2.7.
This is not unique to the pair. All twelve next-door Venus pairs share a Sun sign in about 19 percent of couples. Pairs that sit further apart share one in 13 percent of couples at most. What is worth seeing is the contrast. By Venus, the tradition calls these two signs blind to each other. By Sun, they match more than most couples do.
The likeliest single mix is an Aquarius Sun with a Pisces Sun, at 13.8 percent of these couples. In other words, the likeliest Sun pair repeats the Venus pair. Next come Aries with Pisces, at 10.9 percent, and Capricorn with Aquarius, at 10.3 percent.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of these couples. |
|---|---|
| Next-door signs | 36.7 percent of couples. |
| Sextile, two signs apart | 24.4 percent of couples. |
| Same Sun sign | 18.9 percent of couples. |
| Square, three signs apart | 13.7 percent of couples. |
| Trine, four signs apart | 5.5 percent of couples. |
| Quincunx, five signs apart | 0.9 percent of couples. |
No couple in this pair has opposite Sun signs. The reason is the same one our guide to Venus sign compatibility gives for opposite Suns: Venus never strays far from the Sun, so two Venuses one sign apart keep their Suns close as well.
An Aquarius and a Pisces by Sun sign is not this couple
Many readers land here because they are an Aquarius and a Pisces by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.
An Aquarius Sun has Venus in Aquarius about 23 percent of the time. A Pisces Sun has Venus in Pisces about 23 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.4 percent of these Sun couples, or one in 19.
From the Venus side, 41.0 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 76th of the 78 pairs, near the very bottom. A birth chart shows your Venus sign in a few seconds. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.
Reading the pair the old way
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition, and modern writers such as Liz Greene and Robert Hand, read Venus in these two signs.
Venus in Aquarius loves as a friend first. It values freedom, fairness and ideas. It shows care by accepting the partner as they are, and it wants room to breathe. Venus in Pisces loves with no walls. It gives without keeping count, forgives fast and wants to feel at one with the other.
- Distance and closeness. Aquarius needs some space. Pisces reads space as a sign of cooling.
- Ideals in common. Both care about more than the couple: a cause, a group, a dream.
- Head and heart. Aquarius explains how it feels. Pisces shows it without words.
- Steady and fluid. Aquarius holds its view. Pisces shifts with the mood of the room.
- After a fight. Aquarius steps back to think. Pisces wants comfort right away.
Take this reading as an invitation to talk about space and closeness. It is not a verdict on the couple. The moods behind it are covered in Aquarius and Pisces Moon compatibility.
What the evidence says
The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. In a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages, he used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from data errors.
Voas tested Sun signs only. As far as we know, no one has run such a test for Venus signs. So the figures on this page describe the sky, not the fate of a couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.
Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs multiply each partner’s Sun-sign shares. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.

Questions about Aquarius and Pisces Venus
Are Venus in Aquarius and Venus in Pisces compatible?
By the old grid, the two signs are disjunct: they share no aspect and no special link. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does. Read the pair as freedom meeting fusion.
What does it mean that Aquarius and Pisces are averse?
Ptolemy called signs one or five signs apart disjunct, with no tie between them. Later authors say they turn away from each other. It is a label about geometry, not a ban on love.
Can a Venus in Aquarius and a Venus in Pisces share a Sun sign?
Yes, in four ways: both Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries Suns. That covers about 18.9 percent of these couples, or one in five.
How common is an Aquarius Venus and Pisces Venus couple?
Over 1600 to 2400, about 1.36 percent of random couples, or one in 74. It ranks 52nd of the 78 Venus pairs.
Why is Venus exalted in Pisces?
Ptolemy saw Venus as warm and moist. Pisces opens the moist season before spring, so he made it her sign of honor. In Aquarius, she holds only a small band of degrees called her terms.
