Aquarius Moon and Pisces Moon Compatibility: Averse Signs Whose Moons Can Still Touch

Aquarius Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility joins two Moons in signs that sit side by side. The old books call such neighbors averse: they cannot see each other. Yet the line between the two signs is thin. In about 1 couple in 28, the two Moons sit within 8 degrees of each other, right across that line.

This page explains both sides of that fact. It covers the gap between the signs, the two hosts, Saturn and Jupiter, and what Ptolemy said about neighbors. One thing first. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

The pair at a glance

Question Short answer.
Distance between the signs One sign, a semi-sextile of 30 degrees.
Elements and modes Fixed air meets mutable water.
Rulers Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces.
Moon strength No major rank in either sign.
Ptolemy’s view Disjunct, on both ways of reading him.
Moons joined across the line About 1 couple in 28, with an 8 degree orb.
How common is the pair? About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs.

What a Moon sign shows

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you down and how you care for the people you love.

Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Aquarius and Pisces are one sign apart. That distance is called a semi-sextile, an angle of 30 degrees. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.

Neighbors that cannot see each other

Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. In Book 1, chapter 13, he lists the aspects he accepts. They are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. The semi-sextile is not on the list. For him, two signs side by side form no aspect at all.

In chapter 16, he goes further. He calls such signs “disjunct”, or averse. They share no aspect and no other bond. Signs one apart and signs five apart are the two cases. That makes 24 of the 78 pairs.

Ptolemy also names signs that “behold” each other and signs that “command and obey”. There are two ways to read those chapters. Read by whole sign, as the translator F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), none of the 24 pairs gets a bond. All 24 are disjunct. Read by degree, as mirror points in the style of William Lilly, eight of the 24 do get a bond. Only 16 stay disjunct.

Aquarius and Pisces are disjunct on both readings. By whole sign, Aquarius beholds Sagittarius and Pisces beholds Scorpio. By degree, Aquarius mirrors Scorpio and Taurus, and Pisces mirrors Libra and Aries. Neither sign points to the other.

Read as a symbol, the two Moons stand back to back. Each one faces its own way. Neither one sees the other’s mood coming. It has to be said out loud.

But the line between them is thin

Signs are 30 degree slices. A sign is a label, not a wall. A Moon at 28 degrees of Aquarius and a Moon at 2 degrees of Pisces are in different signs. Yet they are only 4 degrees apart. By degree, that is a conjunction, the closest bond two Moons can have.

How common is that? The Moon spends about the same time in every degree of a sign. So we can work it out from the area of a square, the same way for any two neighbor signs.

Orb allowed Moons joined across the line Exact semi-sextile within the orb.
Within 3 degrees 0.5 percent, about 1 couple in 200 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 2 percent, 1 couple in 50 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 3.56 percent, about 1 couple in 28 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 5.56 percent, 1 couple in 18 56 percent of couples.

The same area gives a second, mirror case. When the Aquarius Moon is early in its sign and the Pisces Moon is late in its sign, the two are close to 60 degrees apart. That is a sextile, out of sign. It also happens in 3.56 percent of couples, with an 8 degree orb. Together, the two cases make 7.11 percent.

So in most of these couples, the old verdict holds. The Moons are one sign apart, and they are averse. In a small group, the Moons touch across the line. In those couples, the bond is stronger than the signs suggest. You can check yours by comparing the two degrees, not only the two signs.

Two hosts: Saturn and Jupiter

Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. In the old tradition, Saturn rules Aquarius and Jupiter rules Pisces. Modern astrologers add Uranus and Neptune. This page follows the old rulers. Our page on Pisces and Aquarius read through the Sun covers the modern pair.

Saturn and Jupiter are the two slowest planets the eye can see. Saturn stands for limits, time, and rules. Jupiter stands for growth, faith, and generosity. Astrologers read them as a pair of opposites. One draws the line. The other widens it.

An Aquarius Moon, hosted by Saturn, calms down through structure and distance. A Pisces Moon, hosted by Jupiter, calms down through trust and flow. One wants to know the rules. The other wants to know it is safe to let go.

Neither Moon has a major rank here. Tradition gives the Moon four special signs: Cancer, its home; Taurus, its exaltation; Capricorn, its exile; and Scorpio, its fall. Aquarius and Pisces are none of them. So both Moons are plain guests. Neither partner starts from a weak seat.

Fixed air, mutable water

Each sign has an element and a mode. Aquarius is air and fixed. Air is the element of ideas and talk. Fixed signs hold a course once it is set. Pisces is water and mutable. Water is the element of feeling. Mutable signs close a season and adapt to change.

Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only semi-sextile between a fixed air sign and a mutable water sign. The mix explains a lot. The Aquarius Moon holds a view. The Pisces Moon changes shape to fit the room. One thinks about a feeling. The other lives inside it.

In practice, the Aquarius partner wants a clear answer. The Pisces partner wants to be felt, not solved. Each one can give the other what is missing. Aquarius lends a steady frame. Pisces lends warmth and a sense of meaning.

New and full moon births

A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.

Moon sign New moon births Full moon births.
Aquarius Moon 7.97 percent, Sun in Aquarius 8.43 percent, Sun in Leo.
Pisces Moon 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo.

Both signs lean the same way, toward the full moon. The Sun moves slowest in early July, so it spends more days in Leo and Virgo than in Aquarius and Pisces. For this couple, 16.05 percent include at least one full moon birth. 15.40 percent include at least one new moon birth.

What each partner brings

An Aquarius Moon steps back to feel safe. It shows love through loyalty and honest talk. When upset, it goes quiet and thinks. A Pisces Moon moves closer to feel safe. It shows love through care and a shared mood. When upset, it drifts, or takes on the other person’s pain.

Together, they can build something kind and a little unusual. Aquarius brings the plan. Pisces brings the heart of it. The friction shows up in timing. The Pisces Moon reaches out just as the Aquarius Moon needs room. Then the Aquarius Moon reaches back once the Pisces Moon has drifted away.

  • Name the need before you act on it: “I need an hour” or “I need a hug”.
  • Give space with a time limit, so it does not feel like a door closing.
  • Let the Pisces partner feel first, then let the Aquarius partner talk it through.
  • Check your two Moon degrees. If they touch across the line, you share more than the signs say.

How common is an Aquarius Moon and Pisces Moon couple?

The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. Any same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.

Check your Moons before you read on

The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.

Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five.

For this pair, the error has a twist. A noon mistake moves the Moon by one sign. So a late Aquarius Moon can really be a Pisces Moon. An early Pisces Moon can really be an Aquarius Moon. Your couple could then be Aquarius Moon and Aquarius Moon, or Pisces Moon and Pisces Moon. A birth time settles it.

How we measured

We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.

Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. For the degrees, we treat each Moon as equally likely to be at any degree of its sign. Then a join within an orb of d degrees has a share of d squared over 1,800. For the exact semi-sextile, the real spread of the Moon gives the same result. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.

What the research says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.

So the old verdict of aversion is not a warning, and the join across the line is not a promise. They are symbols. They point to where these two Moons miss each other, and to the small bridge some couples already have.

Frequently asked questions

Are Aquarius Moon and Pisces Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as neighbors that cannot see each other, one guest of Saturn and one of Jupiter. They need to say their needs out loud. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.

What does averse mean in astrology?

Ptolemy calls two signs averse, or disjunct, when they share no aspect and no other bond. Signs one apart and signs five apart are averse. Aquarius and Pisces are averse on both ways of reading him.

Can an Aquarius Moon and a Pisces Moon be conjunct?

Yes, by degree. When one Moon is late in Aquarius and the other is early in Pisces, they can be close. With an 8 degree orb, that happens in about 1 couple in 28.

Is the Moon strong in Aquarius or Pisces?

The Moon has no major rank in either sign. It is not at home, exalted, in exile, or in its fall there. Both Moons are plain guests.

Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?

On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
