Capricorn Venus and Aquarius Venus Compatibility: 1 Couple in 76, and the Suns Swap Places

Venus in Capricorn with Venus in Aquarius is a rare match. We checked 800 years of sky, from 1600 to 2400. Pick two people at random, and the odds that one has Venus in Capricorn and the other has Venus in Aquarius are 1.31 percent. That is about one pair in 76.

The same count holds a small surprise. A Capricorn Sun is more likely to have Venus in Aquarius than in Capricorn. An Aquarius Sun is more likely to have Venus in Capricorn. So when this Venus pair shows up in a Capricorn and Aquarius couple, the Venus signs are swapped more than they match.

This page explains both results and how we got them. It reads the pair through the old rules and the modern ones. It does not claim to predict how a couple will do. No one has shown that a sign can do that, and we come back to this point near the end.

Two signs next door with one ruler

Venus in a birth chart shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Its sign is the style. This page compares two styles: Venus in Capricorn and Venus in Aquarius.

The two signs sit side by side on the wheel. In the old books, that is a weak link. Ptolemy, in the first book of the Tetrabiblos, calls signs that sit next to each other disjunct, or alien. He says they are turned away from each other. They share no element, since Capricorn is earth and Aquarius is air. They share no mode, since Capricorn is a cardinal sign that starts things, and Aquarius is a fixed sign that holds them.

Yet these two share one thing that no other pair of next-door signs shares. They have the same ruler. Each sign has a planet that owns it, the way a host owns a house. Saturn owns both Capricorn and Aquarius. Ptolemy says why in the next chapter. Saturn is the cold planet, the one farthest from the Sun and Moon. So it gets the two cold, wintry signs across from Cancer and Leo, the signs of the Moon and the Sun.

Check the rest of the wheel and you will not find a second case. Aries and Pisces have Mars and Jupiter. Cancer and Leo have the Moon and the Sun. Only Capricorn and Aquarius are next door and under one owner.

This matters for Venus. When Venus sits in a sign, the owner of that sign acts as its host. Astrologers call this host the dispositor. For both people in this pair, the host is Saturn. Two different Venus styles, one landlord. It is the one thread this pair shares by birthright.

For the full portrait of each sign, see our guides to the Capricorn sign and the Aquarius sign. Our guide to the zodiac signs shows how all twelve fit together.

How many people have each Venus

If Venus spent the same time in each sign, each would hold one twelfth of the year, or 8.33 percent. It does not. We timed each Venus sign change from 1600 to 2400 and added up the days.

Venus signShare of all time, 1600 to 2400Rank out of twelve
Capricorn8.04 percentTwelfth, the lowest.
Aquarius8.16 percentTenth, third from the bottom.
Cancer, for scale8.62 percentFirst, the highest.

So both signs sit near the bottom. Put them together and Venus spends 16.20 percent of the time in Saturn’s two signs. That is the lowest share for any two signs side by side on the wheel. At the top, Gemini and Cancer together reach about 17.1 percent.

Our guide to Venus in Capricorn found the same 8.04 percent, with the same method. The gaps are small. Still, they add up when you pair two people.

The odds of this pair in a couple

Take two people born at random moments. The chance that the first has Venus in Capricorn and the second has Venus in Aquarius is 8.04 percent times 8.16 percent. The chance of the reverse is the same. Add the two, and you get 1.31 percent, or one pair in 76.

There are 66 ways to pair two different Venus signs. On our count, this one ranks 65th. Only Venus in Scorpio with Venus in Capricorn is less common, at 1.30 percent. The most common mixed pair is Venus in Taurus with Venus in Cancer, at 1.48 percent.

These are small gaps. One pair in 76 against one in 68 for the most common mix is not a gulf. The point is that the flat one-in-twelve rule is not quite right, and this pair sits at the thin end of it.

Your Sun sign limits your Venus sign

From Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. On our 800-year scan, the widest gap was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus can only be in your Sun sign or one of the two signs on each side of it.

That rule shuts most people out of this pair. Here is who can have each Venus, as a share of all people born with it.

Sun signShare of all Venus in Capricorn peopleShare of all Venus in Aquarius people
Scorpio9.6 percentNone.
Sagittarius28.8 percent9.7 percent.
Capricorn23.2 percent28.5 percent.
Aquarius29.0 percent23.1 percent.
Pisces9.4 percent29.5 percent.
AriesNone9.3 percent.
The other six Sun signsNoneNone.

Read the table down the middle. Only four Sun signs can hold either Venus: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. A Scorpio Sun can bring the Capricorn Venus but never the Aquarius one. An Aries Sun can bring the Aquarius Venus but never the Capricorn one. A Leo, a Gemini or a Libra Sun can have neither.

The swap: Suns and Venus signs cross over

Now ask the question the other way round. If you know your Sun sign, what are the odds of each Venus?

Your Sun signOdds of Venus in CapricornOdds of Venus in Aquarius
Sagittarius28.6 percent9.7 percent.
Capricorn23.2 percent28.8 percent.
Aquarius28.8 percent23.2 percent.
Pisces9.2 percent29.3 percent.

Look at the two middle rows. A Capricorn Sun has Venus in Aquarius 28.8 percent of the time, and in Capricorn only 23.2 percent. An Aquarius Sun shows the mirror image.

Why? Venus lingers when it is far from the Sun. At its widest points, it seems to slow down against the Sun for weeks. On our scan, Venus was more than 30 degrees from the Sun 51 percent of the time. At that range, it has to sit in a sign next door. So the sign just past your Sun beats your own Sun sign.

Here is what that means for a couple. Say one partner is a Capricorn Sun and the other an Aquarius Sun. The chance that their Venus signs form this pair is 13.7 percent, about one couple in seven. That is ten times the rate for two people picked at random. But the pair splits two ways:

  • The match: the Capricorn Sun has Venus in Capricorn, and the Aquarius Sun has Venus in Aquarius. Odds: 5.4 percent.
  • The swap: the Capricorn Sun has Venus in Aquarius, and the Aquarius Sun has Venus in Capricorn. Odds: 8.3 percent.

So the swap is half again as likely as the match. In that version, each partner loves in the style of the other’s Sun sign. The one who looks like a Capricorn wants an Aquarius kind of love. The one who looks like an Aquarius wants a Capricorn kind.

Two Capricorn Suns can form the pair too, and so can two Aquarius Suns. The odds are 13.3 and 13.4 percent. So a couple of the same Sun sign is almost as likely to hold it as a mixed couple.

The lesson is plain. You cannot read this Venus pair off two Sun signs. You need the charts.

What the old books give Venus in each sign

Traditional astrology ranks a planet in each sign. Those ranks are called dignities. The top ranks are home, where a planet owns the sign, and honor, where it is exalted. The low ranks are exile, the sign across from home, and fall, the sign across from honor. Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra and exalted in Pisces. It is in exile in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo.

Capricorn and Aquarius hold none of those four ranks for Venus. That is why some modern books call these placements neutral. The old tables add smaller ranks, and here the two signs differ.

Minor rankVenus in CapricornVenus in Aquarius
Element rulerYes: Venus leads the earth signs in a day chart, as in Dorotheus and Lilly. No: Saturn and Mercury lead the air signs.
Bound, a slice of the sign14 to 22 degrees, in the Egyptian bounds.7 to 13 degrees, in the Egyptian bounds.
Face, a ten-degree thirdNone: Jupiter, Mars and the Sun.0 to 10 degrees: the first face is Venus.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, counts each of these small ranks. A planet with none of them he calls peregrine, a wanderer with no claim on the place. Venus in these two signs is peregrine only when it falls outside all of its small ranks. So each one earns its claim by degree, or by day and night.

The Egyptian bounds are the ones Vettius Valens uses in his Anthologies. Lilly uses a different set, so check which table your astrologer reads.

Two ways of saying yes

Here the numbers stop and the reading starts. What follows is the way astrologers read these styles. It is a lens, not a finding.

Venus in Capricorn says yes with proof. Love is shown by what you build and keep. Time kept, bills paid, plans made and kept. Earth signs, in Stephen Arroyo’s reading of the elements, trust what they can touch.

Venus in Aquarius says yes with room. Love is shown by respect for who you are, and for your friends and your causes. Air signs, in that same reading, live through ideas and talk. A partner who asks for too much too soon can feel like a cage.

So each partner can read the other’s love as a lack. The Capricorn Venus can see the Aquarius style as cool. The Aquarius Venus can see the Capricorn style as a set of rules.

The shared host gives them a common tongue, if they want it. Saturn is the planet of time, limits and keeping your word. Both of these Venus signs trust love that lasts through dull days. They just build it with different tools: one with a plan, one with a pact that leaves each free.

Liz Greene’s work on Saturn reads it as the part of us that learns through slow effort. In that light, the pair is less about sparks than about a long build.

When Venus was in these signs

Venus crosses Capricorn and then Aquarius in one sweep, about once a year. A plain crossing of each sign lasts about 24 days. Over 800 years, the middle value was 24.3 days for Capricorn and 24.4 days for Aquarius.

Every eight years, for now, Venus turns back, or goes retrograde, in Capricorn. Then it stays far longer. From November 2021 to March 2022, Venus spent 121 days in Capricorn. The same thing comes back from November 2029 to March 2030.

The dates below are in New York time. Venus changes sign at a set moment for the whole world, so the date can differ by one day in other time zones.

If you were born on the day Venus changed sign, you need the hour. A chart made with your birth time will show which side of the line you fall on.

What this can and cannot tell you

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will fare. The largest test we know of is David Voas’s 2007 paper, Ten million marriages. He looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with more than ten million married couples. He found that Sun signs had no effect on who marries whom, or on who stays married. Voas did not test Venus signs.

For the odds of every other Venus pair, see our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

So read this page as a lens. It can give two people words for how each one shows love. It cannot tell you whether you should be together. The odds on this page are odds about the sky, not about love.

Venus is also one voice in a chart. The Moon shows what makes you feel safe at home. Our page on Capricorn and Aquarius Moon signs looks at the same two signs through that lens. The Sun shows what a life is built around. Read the Sun-sign comparison of Capricorn and Aquarius for that side.

How we measured this

All positions are tropical, seen from the center of the Earth, on the true ecliptic of the date.

Route one used the open astronomy-engine library. We stepped through time from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400 every six hours. At each Venus sign change, we cut the gap in half again and again, down to one minute. Then we summed the days in each sign. That gave 8.04 percent for Capricorn and 8.16 percent for Aquarius. We then checked the Sun and Venus together every two hours, 3.5 million moments in all, to build the Sun and Venus tables.

Route two used different math. We took the orbit tables that NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory gives for rough planet positions over five thousand years. We solved each orbit by hand, turned the result into a view from Earth, and corrected for the slow drift of the equinox. We sampled every two hours, offset by one hour from route one. The two routes agree on every share on this page within 0.01 of a point.

For the dates, we checked four sign changes against JPL Horizons, NASA’s own service. Our times fell within two minutes of it.

The couple odds assume two people born at random moments, not linked in any way. Real couples are not drawn at random, and birth rates vary by month. So treat those figures as a guide to the sky, not a census.

Questions people ask

How rare is a Venus in Capricorn and Venus in Aquarius couple?

For two people picked at random, the odds are 1.31 percent, about one pair in 76. Of the 66 ways to pair two different Venus signs, only Scorpio with Capricorn is less common.

Can a Capricorn Sun have Venus in Aquarius?

Yes, and it is more likely than Venus in Capricorn. From 1600 to 2400, a Capricorn Sun had Venus in Aquarius 28.8 percent of the time, and Venus in Capricorn 23.2 percent.

Which Sun signs can have Venus in Aquarius?

Five: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the other seven are ruled out.

Why do Capricorn and Aquarius share a ruler?

In Ptolemy’s scheme, Saturn, the cold planet, gets the two cold, wintry signs across from Cancer and Leo. They are the only pair of next-door signs with one ruler.

Is Venus weak in Capricorn or Aquarius?

Neither sign is Venus’s home, honor, exile or fall. In a day chart, Venus in Capricorn leads the earth signs. In Aquarius, Venus rules the first ten degrees as a face.

Does this Venus pair predict a good match?

No. No study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do. It is a way to describe two styles of love, not a forecast.
