Capricorn Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility joins the two signs of Saturn. That is rarer than it sounds. Five planets in the old scheme rule two signs each. Only Saturn’s two signs sit side by side.
So this couple shares a host but not a view. The signs are next door, one step apart on the wheel. Ptolemy says signs one step apart cannot see each other at all. Two Moons under one ruler, turned away from each other: that is the puzzle of this pair.
This page reads it piece by piece, with numbers where they help. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | One sign, a semi-sextile of 30 degrees. |
| Elements and modes | Earth and air, cardinal and fixed. |
| Ruler | Saturn, for both signs. |
| Moon strength | In exile in Capricorn, a plain guest in Aquarius. |
| Ptolemy’s reading | Disjunct, on either reading of his list. |
| Full moon births | Third highest of the 78 pairs. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |
What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Capricorn and Aquarius sit side by side. The angle between them is 30 degrees, a semi-sextile. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
Saturn’s two houses
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. In the old scheme, the Sun and the Moon rule one sign each. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn rule two each.
Ptolemy, the Greek scholar who wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, explains the plan in Book 1. He gave the two lights the two summer signs: Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon. Saturn, the coldest planet he knew, got the two signs across from them. Capricorn faces Cancer, and Aquarius faces Leo. The other planets fill the signs in between.
That plan puts each planet’s two signs at a set distance. Mercury’s two signs are three apart. So are Jupiter’s. Venus’s two signs are five apart, and so are Mars’s. Saturn’s two signs are the only pair that touch.
| Planet | Its two signs | Distance between them. |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Gemini and Virgo | Three signs apart. |
| Venus | Taurus and Libra | Five signs apart. |
| Mars | Aries and Scorpio | Five signs apart. |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius and Pisces | Three signs apart. |
| Saturn | Capricorn and Aquarius | Side by side. |
So among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only mixed pair of neighbors with one host. A shared host is a shared language. Both Moons trust what lasts. Both value keeping your word. Both are calm in a crisis and slow to show a need.
Signs that cannot see each other
In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists the angles that link two signs. They are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. The semi-sextile is not on his list. He calls signs one step apart “disjunct”, which means cut off. Later astrologers call this aversion: the two signs turn away from each other. The same holds for signs five steps apart.
Ptolemy does name two quieter links that can bridge a gap. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. There are two ways to read his list.
- By degree, as William Lilly read it in his Christian Astrology of 1647, signs behold each other when they mirror across the solstice points. They command and obey when they mirror across the equinox points. Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius, and Aquarius mirrors Scorpio. So these two do not mirror each other. On this reading, 16 of the 24 pairs one or five steps apart stay disjunct.
- By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), none of the 24 pairs one or five steps apart has a link. Capricorn has no partner that beholds it. So all 24 are disjunct.
Capricorn and Aquarius are disjunct on both readings. Read as a symbol, the two Moons share a host but do not read each other by instinct. They agree on values and still have to say what they feel.
An exiled Moon beside a plain guest
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, these are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio.
So the Capricorn Moon is in exile, across from its home. It is a guest in a house with rules it did not write. In the same chapters, Ptolemy gives the earth signs to the Moon by night. So a Capricorn Moon born at night holds a small rank, called triplicity, in its exile. Our page on the Moon in Capricorn explains what exile does and does not mean.
Aquarius holds none of the Moon’s four major signs. The Moon there is a plain guest, neither helped nor hurt. Lilly gives it only a minor rank, called a face, in the last ten degrees of Aquarius. Our page on the Moon in Aquarius covers that sign on its own.
Exile is not a verdict on a person. It rates the Moon’s ease, not anyone’s worth. Here, one partner starts from a hard seat and one from a neutral seat, under the same host.
Two ways to serve one host
Capricorn is earth, the element of the body and of things you can hold. It is cardinal, so it opens a season: the northern winter. A Capricorn Moon calms down by taking charge. It makes a plan and works through it. It shows love by being there, on time, year after year.
Aquarius is air, the element of ideas and links between people. It is fixed, so it holds a season steady. An Aquarius Moon calms down by stepping back to think. It shows love through fair terms, loyal friendship, and respect for your freedom. It dislikes scenes.
Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only semi-sextile of earth and air between a cardinal sign and a fixed one. The mix gives the pair its style. The Capricorn Moon wants a plan for the future. The Aquarius Moon wants room to change the plan. Both are cool under stress, so neither rushes to soothe the other.
- The Capricorn Moon names a feeling before it turns it into a task.
- The Aquarius Moon says when it needs space, and for how long.
- Both agree that a rule can change when the reason for it changes.
- Both keep one warm habit each week that has no purpose but comfort.
A pair that leans toward full moon births
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn Moon | 7.94 percent, Sun in Capricorn | 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer. |
| Aquarius Moon | 7.97 percent, Sun in Aquarius | 8.43 percent, Sun in Leo. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle, so the Sun seems to move fastest in early January. From 1600 to 2400, it spends about 29.4 days in Capricorn and 29.6 days in Aquarius. Those are its two shortest stays. It spends about 31.5 days in Cancer and 31.3 days in Leo, its two longest.
So both Moons have few days to catch the Sun in their own sign, and many days to face it. In a couple, the two leans add up. 16.20 percent of Capricorn Moon and Aquarius Moon couples include at least one full moon birth. That puts the pair third of the 78. Only 15.28 percent include at least one new moon birth, which puts it 76th.
Here is the neat part. Ptolemy set Saturn’s signs across from the houses of the lights. So in this couple, a full moon birth by sign means the Sun stood in Cancer or Leo, the homes of the Moon and the Sun. Read as a symbol, the two Saturn Moons lean toward births that face the lights. The gap is under one point. It is real in the sky, but it is not a rule about people.
Is the semi-sextile exact?
A semi-sextile by sign is not always 30 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn and a Moon at 29 degrees of Aquarius are one sign apart. Yet the real gap is 58 degrees, close to a sextile. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true semi-sextile. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. Across the sign line, two other angles appear. With an 8 degree orb, about 3.6 percent of couples have a sextile instead. Another 3.6 percent have the two Moons within 8 degrees, a conjunction that straddles the border. For those couples, the Moons are as close as two Moons in one sign.
A few hours can decide the sign
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, a little over half a degree an hour. It stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A Capricorn Moon born late in the day could be an Aquarius Moon. An Aquarius Moon born early could be a Capricorn Moon.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. If either of you was born on a day the Moon left Capricorn, check the hour before you read on.
How common is a Capricorn Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. The Sun’s days per sign are averages over 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the shared host, the aversion, and the full moon lean are not warnings. They are symbols. A Capricorn Moon and an Aquarius Moon both hold firm and keep faith. The symbols point to where their common ground helps, and where each has to say what the other cannot see.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Capricorn Moon and an Aquarius Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as neighbors under one ruler, Saturn, joined by a semi-sextile. Ptolemy left that angle off his list. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why do Capricorn and Aquarius share a ruler?
Ptolemy gave Cancer to the Moon and Leo to the Sun. He gave Saturn the two signs across from them, Capricorn and Aquarius. They are the only two signs with one ruler that sit side by side.
What does disjunct mean for this pair?
Ptolemy calls signs one step apart disjunct, or in aversion. Capricorn and Aquarius have no mirror link by degree and no link by whole signs, so they stay disjunct on both readings.
How common is a Capricorn Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Could I be a Capricorn Moon instead of an Aquarius Moon?
Yes, if you were born on a day the Moon moved from Capricorn into Aquarius. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine.
