Scorpio Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility is a square between two fixed signs. Fixed signs hold a course and resist change. Here, both Moons do that, and they sit at a right angle to each other.
The rulers raise the stakes. Mars rules Scorpio and Saturn rules Aquarius, in the old scheme. Tradition calls these two planets the difficult ones. So each partner’s Moon reports to a planet of friction.
This page covers the square, the rulers, and a quiet mirror between the two Moons that shows up only by degree. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | Three signs, a square of 90 degrees. |
| Elements and modes | Water and air, both fixed. |
| Rulers | Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius. |
| Moon strength | In its fall in Scorpio, no major rank in Aquarius. |
| Ptolemy’s quiet ties | Mirrored by degree, not by whole sign. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |
| How close is the square? | Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples. |
What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Scorpio and Aquarius are three signs apart. That distance is a square. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer who wrote the Tetrabiblos, lists the square as a tense angle, next to the opposition. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
A square between two fixed signs
The zodiac has three modes. Cardinal signs start a season. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and keep it going. Mutable signs close a season and prepare the next one.
Scorpio holds the middle of autumn. Aquarius holds the middle of winter. Both are fixed. In a square, the two signs share a mode, so both partners bring the same way of acting to the tension. Here, that way is to stand firm.
The elements differ. Scorpio is water, the element of feeling and bonds. Aquarius is air, the element of ideas and distance. Water wants to merge. Air wants room to breathe. So the square pits a Moon that bonds deeply against a Moon that needs space to think.
The zodiac holds four fixed squares, and each joins a different mix of elements. Taurus and Leo join earth and fire. Leo and Scorpio join fire and water. Taurus and Aquarius join earth and air. Scorpio and Aquarius are the only fixed square of water and air.
Mars and Saturn hold the keys
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. In the old scheme, Mars rules Scorpio and Saturn rules Aquarius. Ptolemy calls these two the malefics, the planets that bring trouble when they are poorly placed. Mars stands for heat, drive, and defense. Saturn stands for cold, limits, and time.
So the Scorpio Moon hands its moods to Mars. It reacts fast and guards its ground. The Aquarius Moon hands its moods to Saturn. It cools a feeling down and looks at it from a distance.
Neither host has any major rank in the other’s sign. Mars is not exalted in Aquarius, and Saturn is not exalted in Scorpio. So the two rulers do not lend each other a hand, as some pairs do. Each Moon keeps its own host, and each host keeps its own rules.
Read as a symbol, heat meets cold. A Scorpio Moon under stress moves closer and asks hard questions. An Aquarius Moon under stress steps back and asks for time. Neither is wrong. They simply cool down in opposite ways.
The Scorpio Moon: in its fall
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
Ptolemy puts the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus. So its fall is in Scorpio, the sign across from Taurus. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, lists the same. A Moon in its fall still works. It just works harder to be seen and to feel at ease.
A fall is not a verdict on a person. In the old reading, a Scorpio Moon feels in depth and shows little. It gives trust slowly. It remembers both kindness and hurt for a long time. When it loves, it is loyal to the end. Our page on the Moon in Scorpio explains the fall in detail.
The Aquarius Moon: a guest without rank
Aquarius holds none of the Moon’s four major signs. The Moon there is a plain guest, neither helped nor hurt. Lilly does give it one small rank, called a face, in the last ten degrees of Aquarius. That rank is minor and does not change the big picture.
An Aquarius Moon calms down by stepping back and thinking. It shows love through loyalty to friends, fairness, and respect for freedom. It dislikes scenes. When upset, it goes quiet and treats the feeling as a problem to solve. Our page on the Moon in Aquarius covers the sign and its timing.
So the Scorpio Moon works harder to feel safe, and the Aquarius Moon works harder to feel close.
Mirrored by degree, not by sign
Ptolemy names two quiet ties between signs. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. There are two ways to read his list, and they give different answers for this pair.
The first reading works by degree. It is the one William Lilly used. Signs behold each other when they sit at the same distance from the solstice points, 0 degrees of Cancer and 0 degrees of Capricorn. Such mirror points are called antiscia. On this reading, Scorpio and Aquarius behold each other. Scorpio sits on one side of the winter solstice point, and Aquarius on the other. A Moon at 10 degrees of Scorpio mirrors a Moon at 20 degrees of Aquarius.
The second reading works by whole signs. In the Loeb edition of the Tetrabiblos, the translator F. E. Robbins lists the pairs of signs that behold each other (note 83). The list is Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, Aquarius and Sagittarius. Scorpio and Aquarius are not on it. So by whole signs, these two do not behold each other.
We measured how close the mirror is for random couples. The two Moons sit within 1 degree of mirror points in 6.56 percent of couples. Within 3 degrees, the share is 19 percent. Neither reading places the pair in the “command and obey” list.
| Reading of Ptolemy | What it says about this pair. |
|---|---|
| By degree, Lilly’s mirror points | They behold each other, closely in about 1 couple in 15. |
| By whole signs, Robbins note 83 | They do not behold each other. |
| Command and obey, either reading | No link between these two signs. |
Read as a symbol, the mirror softens the square for couples whose Moons land on it. Two people who clash in style can still share the same pitch of feeling.
Is the square exact?
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Scorpio and a Moon at 29 degrees of Aquarius are three signs apart. Yet the real gap is 118 degrees. That is close to a trine, a gentle angle. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true square. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have an exact square. About 3.6 percent have a trine across the sign line instead. Another 3.6 percent have a sextile. For those couples, the tense square by sign is a soft angle by degree.
A pair that leans toward full moon births
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio Moon | 8.06 percent, Sun in Scorpio | 8.33 percent, Sun in Taurus. |
| Aquarius Moon | 7.97 percent, Sun in Aquarius | 8.43 percent, Sun in Leo. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It crosses Aquarius and Scorpio fairly fast, so these Moons have fewer days to meet it. It crosses Leo and Taurus more slowly, so these Moons have more days to face it.
In a couple, the two leans add up. 15.39 percent of Scorpio Moon and Aquarius Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. That puts the pair 68th of the 78. But 16.06 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 10th.
How common is a Scorpio Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. A Scorpio Moon born late in the day could be a Sagittarius Moon. An Aquarius Moon born early could be a Capricorn Moon.
Four habits that fit the symbols
Two fixed Moons at a square can both dig in. The Scorpio Moon waits for proof, the Aquarius Moon for calm.
- The Scorpio Moon names the feeling in one plain sentence, without a test.
- The Aquarius Moon says when it will come back to the talk, and then does.
- Both agree that space is not a verdict and that depth is not a demand.
- Both keep one shared cause, a friend group or a project, that feeds the Aquarius side and the Scorpio loyalty at once.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the fall, the square, and the two hard rulers are not warnings. The mirror is not a promise. They are symbols. A Scorpio Moon and an Aquarius Moon both keep their word and both hold their ground. The symbols point to where that shared firmness helps, and to where it needs a first step.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Scorpio Moon and an Aquarius Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a square between two fixed signs, water and air. The square is a tense angle. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why do Mars and Saturn matter for this pair?
Mars rules Scorpio and Saturn rules Aquarius in the old scheme. Tradition calls them the difficult planets. Neither has a major rank in the other’s sign, so each Moon keeps its own host.
Do Scorpio and Aquarius behold each other?
By degree, yes: Lilly’s mirror points link them, closely in 6.56 percent of couples within 1 degree. By whole signs, no: they are not on the list in Robbins’s note 83.
How common is a Scorpio Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?
On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
