Leo Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility pairs two signs that sit five signs apart. Leo is the one house of the Sun. Capricorn is a house of Saturn, and it is the sign where the Moon is in exile. So one partner has a Moon that visits the Sun’s home. The other has a Moon that lives in the sign facing its own home.
We also measured a sky fact that splits this couple in two. Leo Moons are born near a new moon more than near a full moon. Capricorn Moons do the reverse, more than any other Moon sign. This page explains the old rules, the numbers, and how we got them.
The short version
| Question | Answer. |
|---|---|
| What link do the signs form? | A quincunx, five signs or 150 degrees apart. |
| What did Ptolemy call it? | Disjunct: signs that cannot see each other. |
| Elements and modes? | Fire and earth, fixed and cardinal. |
| Who rules each sign? | The Sun rules Leo, Saturn rules Capricorn. |
| Rank of each Moon? | No rank in Leo, exile in Capricorn. |
| What did we measure? | Leo Moons lean new moon, Capricorn Moons lean full moon. |
First, what astrology is not
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
A census holds no birth times, so no one can run that test on Moon signs. Read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It is there to start a talk, not to grade your couple.
Two ends of the Sun’s half
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he hands out the signs to the planets. He starts with the two lights. The Sun gets Leo and the Moon gets Cancer, the signs of high summer.
Then he cuts the zodiac in two. The half from Leo to Capricorn belongs to the Sun. The half from Aquarius to Cancer belongs to the Moon. Each of the five planets gets one sign in each half.
Look at where this couple falls. Leo opens the Sun’s half. Capricorn closes it. The two Moons sit at the two ends of the same half, with Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius between them.
Saturn is the last planet in the line. Ptolemy calls it cold, and far from the lights. So it gets the signs opposite them: Capricorn, facing the Moon’s Cancer, and Aquarius, facing the Sun’s Leo. That is why the Moon counts as weak in Capricorn. It is the sign straight across from its own home.
A guest and an exile
Old astrology rates how well a planet works in each sign. The Moon owns Cancer and is honored in Taurus. It is in exile in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. Leo is on none of these lists.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, used the word peregrine for a planet with no rank in its sign. It means a traveler with no house of its own in town. So the Leo Moon is a guest in the Sun’s house. It leans on the Sun, and our guide to the Moon in Leo calls it a need for a witness.
Exile is a harder word, and a softer fact than it sounds. It does not mean a cold heart. It means the Moon works by the rules of Saturn, the planet of time, limits and structure. The Capricorn Moon feels safe when things are in order and earned. Our guide to the Moon in Capricorn times how long each of those stays lasts.
Signs with their backs turned
In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy names four links between signs: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. They need signs six, four, three or two apart. Five signs apart fits none of them. In chapter 16, he calls such signs disjunct, which means cut off.
He had two other bonds. Some signs command and others obey. Some signs see each other. These can be counted by exact degree, as mirror images, the way Lilly read them. They can also be counted by whole signs, as in the notes of the translator Frank Robbins.
By degree, Leo’s partners are Scorpio and Taurus. By whole sign, Leo commands Sagittarius and sees Gemini. By whole sign, Capricorn obeys Cancer and sees no sign at all. By degree, its partners are Gemini and Sagittarius. So Leo and Capricorn have no old bond on either reading.
That puts this couple in a small club. By degree, 16 of the 78 sign pairs are fully disjunct. By whole sign, all 24 pairs one or five signs apart are. Leo and Capricorn is on both lists.
Modern astrology gave the 150 degree angle its own name, the quincunx. It reads it as an angle that asks for constant adjustment. That is a newer idea, not Ptolemy’s. Both views are worth knowing, and neither one is a verdict.
Sixth and eighth
There is one more old way to count. In whole sign houses, you count signs from one to twelve. Counted from Leo, Capricorn is the sixth sign. Counted from Capricorn, Leo is the eighth.
Vettius Valens and other Greek authors saw the sixth and eighth places as hard ones. The sixth dealt with illness and toil, the eighth with death and inheritance. Some astrologers read a Moon pair in this position as a bond built on duty and on hard times faced together. It is an image, not a forecast.
Fire meets earth
The element of a sign sets the tone of the Moon in it. Leo is fire: warm, quick and open. Capricorn is earth: patient, practical and careful.
The Leo Moon shows love in a way you can see. Praise out loud, a plan for Friday, a big gesture. It wants proof that its love landed.
The Capricorn Moon shows love by building. It pays the bill, plans the move, keeps the promise it made last year. It says little and delivers a lot.
Here is where the two can miss each other. The Leo Moon waits for warm words the Capricorn Moon holds back. The Capricorn Moon gives steady support the Leo Moon can take for granted. Each partner gives. Neither feels it land.
Fixed and cardinal
Leo is a fixed sign, one that holds on once it has chosen. Capricorn is a cardinal sign, one that starts things and sets the plan. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only quincunx between fire and earth that joins a fixed sign to a cardinal one.
In practice, the Leo Moon keeps its mood and its loyalty. The Capricorn Moon keeps moving the goal ahead. The Leo Moon can feel it is never enough. The Capricorn Moon can see the Leo Moon’s need for praise as a delay.
What we measured: a summer Moon and a winter Moon
Here is the sky fact on this page. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. The two Moons of this couple lean in opposite ways.
| Moon sign | New moon type, Sun in the same sign | Full moon type, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo Moon | 8.43 percent, with a Leo Sun | 7.96 percent, with an Aquarius Sun. |
| Capricorn Moon | 7.94 percent, with a Capricorn Sun | 8.48 percent, with a Cancer Sun. |
The Capricorn line holds two records. No Moon sign has a lower new moon share than 7.94 percent. No Moon sign has a higher full moon share than 8.48 percent.
The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the northern summer. It spends more days in Cancer and Leo than in Capricorn and Aquarius. More days with the Sun in Leo means more new moons in Leo. More days with the Sun in Cancer means more full moons in Capricorn.
So both Moons favor a summer Sun. A Leo Moon is most likely with a Leo Sun. A Capricorn Moon is most likely with a Cancer Sun, right across the sky.
For the couple, the two leans almost cancel. 15.7 percent of couples include at least one partner born with the Moon in their own Sun sign. 15.76 percent include at least one partner born near a full moon.
In the old reading, a full moon birth sets the self and the needs on opposite sides. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.
Rare by Sun, ordinary by Moon
Through the Sun, Leo and Capricorn is a lopsided pair. Our page on Leo and Capricorn Sun sign compatibility shows why: Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births, and Capricorn the rarest.
The Moon does not work that way. It spends close to the same time in every sign, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. Any mixed Moon pair comes out at about 1 couple in 72. So a Leo and Capricorn Moon couple is as common as any other mixed pair. The Sun fact and the Moon fact do not mix.
Venus tells a third story. Our page on Leo Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows that those two Venus signs are never born in the same month.
How close are the two Moons in degrees?
An angle by sign is not always exact in degrees. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so plain geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.
| Orb allowed | Couples with a true 150 degree angle. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a trait of this one. Two edge cases matter here. A late Leo Moon and an early Capricorn Moon can sit 120 degrees apart, a real trine. An early Leo Moon and a late Capricorn Moon can sit 180 degrees apart, a real opposition. At an 8 degree orb, each case covers 3.56 percent of couples.
Check both Moons first
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
A Leo Moon born late on a Moon change day can turn out to be a Virgo Moon. A Capricorn Moon born early can be a Sagittarius Moon. Either shift changes the pair, and the whole reading. The birth time settles it.
Three talks worth having
- How do you know you are loved? The Leo Moon needs words and signs. The Capricorn Moon shows it through plans kept. Say which one you need, out loud.
- When is it enough? The Capricorn Moon keeps raising the bar. The Leo Moon wants a moment to enjoy the win. Agree on when to stop and celebrate.
- Who gets seen? The Leo Moon likes to be thanked in public. The Capricorn Moon likes its effort to be noticed in private. Give each the kind of thanks it counts.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points, and they give the same new moon and full moon shares.
The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 17, in the Robbins translation, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.
Frequently asked questions
Are a Leo Moon and a Capricorn Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as signs with no old bond, a warm fire Moon beside a careful earth Moon in exile. One shows love with words, the other with results. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple does, so use the reading as a lens.
Why is the Moon in exile in Capricorn?
Capricorn is the sign opposite Cancer, the Moon’s home. Ptolemy gave it to Saturn, the cold planet farthest from the lights. Exile means the Moon works by Saturn’s rules there, not that it is broken.
Why are Leo and Capricorn called disjunct?
Ptolemy’s four aspects need signs two, three, four or six apart. Five signs apart fits none of them, and the pair shares no other old link, by degree or by whole sign. So he said they cannot see each other.
Why are Capricorn Moons born near the full moon more?
A full moon puts the Sun in the opposite sign, which is Cancer here. The Sun moves slowest in the northern summer, so it lingers in Cancer. That gives Capricorn Moons the highest full moon share of all, 8.48 percent.
Can I find my Moon sign from my birth date?
On 56 percent of days, yes, since the Moon stays in one sign all day. On the other days, you need a birth time. A noon guess is wrong in about 1 chart in 9.
