If your Sun is in the 3rd house, you were born in the small hours. Under the house method most US apps use, the Sun had just passed its lowest point under your feet. You arrived in the first two hours or so after that point. On most US clocks, that means midnight to 3 a.m.
Those are slow hours on a US maternity ward, though not the slowest. So this placement is rarer than the math of twelve houses says. On an even clock it would be one birth in twelve. With the real US birth hours of 2024, it is about one birth in sixteen.
There is a second story here, and it is an old one. The Greek writers gave the 3rd house to the Moon, not the Sun. The Sun’s own room sits right across the chart, in the 9th house. This guide shows why those two rooms mirror each other, gives the clock times for your city, and counts how many US babies have the Sun land in the Moon’s room. Every number comes from our own count. The method is at the end, so you can check it.
The 3rd house, in plain words
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Think of a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one field of life, and the planets are the furniture.
The 3rd house is the room of the near at hand. It covers speech and writing, the learning mind, brothers and sisters, neighbors, and short trips. Our guide to third house astrology covers the room itself in full.
The Sun stands for the core of you: the self you grow into, and the place where you want to shine. Put it in the 3rd house and the core of you wants to shine through words, through learning, and through the people close by.
Now the sky part. The houses are not fixed to the stars. They are fixed to the ground under your feet. The line where the east sky meets the earth is the start of the 1st house. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses sit below that line, in the part of the sky you cannot see. The 3rd is the deepest of the three. It starts at the lowest point of the sky, straight down through the earth, which astrologers call the IC.
Each night, the Sun sinks under the west edge, swings down to the IC, then climbs back toward the east. The 3rd house is the first leg of that climb. That is why this placement is tied to the clock.
Two ways to draw the houses
There are two common ways to cut the sky into rooms. For the 3rd house they agree less than half the time.
Whole sign houses are the oldest way. The sign rising in the east at your birth is your whole 1st house. The next sign is your 2nd house, and the one after that is your 3rd. The Greek writers used this and nothing else.
Placidus houses cut the sky by time. The Sun’s path from sunset to sunrise is split into six equal parts of time, and each part is one room. Most US sites and apps use this one.
For the Sun, Placidus gives a clean rule. The Sun is in the 3rd house during the first third of the time from its lowest point to sunrise. In whole sign houses, the Sun is in the 3rd house when it sits two signs past your rising sign. We come back to that rule below.
What time of day puts the Sun in the 3rd house
Start with Sun time. At noon by the Sun, the Sun stands highest in your sky. At midnight by the Sun, it stands lowest, right at the IC. On the two equinox days, when day and night have the same length, the Sun rises at 6 a.m. by the Sun.
So the climb from the IC to sunrise takes six hours. Split it into thirds of two hours. The first third runs from midnight to 2 a.m. by the Sun. That is the 3rd house. The next third is the 2nd house, and the last third, which ends at sunrise, is the 1st house.
The rest of the year the window stretches and shrinks with the night. It always starts at midnight by the Sun. In June the nights are short, so the window lasts about an hour and a half. In December the nights are long, so it lasts about two and a half hours. In New York, we found an average of 91 minutes in June and 149 minutes in December.
Sun time is not clock time
Your birth record shows clock time, not Sun time. Two things pull them apart.
First, your time zone is wide. The clock is the same across the whole zone, but the Sun reaches its low point later the farther west you live. Second, daylight saving time moves the clock one hour ahead from March to November. So 1 a.m. by the Sun in July reads close to 2 a.m. on the wall.
Here is the Placidus window for the Sun in the 3rd house in three big US cities, in local clock time. We found each start and end with the Swiss Ephemeris, the same engine many chart apps use. We checked the house of the Sun every thirty seconds.
| Date of birth in 2026 | New York | Chicago | Los Angeles. |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 15 | 12:05 to 2:31 a.m. EST | 12:00 to 2:27 a.m. CST | 12:02 to 2:22 a.m. PST. |
| March 7, last day of winter time | 12:07 to 2:13 a.m. EST | 12:02 to 2:08 a.m. CST | 12:04 to 2:09 a.m. PST. |
| March 9, after the clocks go forward | 1:07 to 3:12 a.m. EDT | 1:01 to 3:06 a.m. CDT | 1:03 to 3:07 a.m. PDT. |
| March 21, just after the equinox | 1:03 to 3:03 a.m. EDT | 12:58 to 2:57 a.m. CDT | 1:00 to 3:00 a.m. PDT. |
| June 22, near the longest day | 12:58 to 2:29 a.m. EDT | 12:52 to 2:22 a.m. CDT | 12:55 to 2:32 a.m. PDT. |
| September 23, equinox | 12:49 to 2:49 a.m. EDT | 12:43 to 2:43 a.m. CDT | 12:45 to 2:46 a.m. PDT. |
| October 31, last day of summer time | 12:40 to 2:56 a.m. EDT | 12:34 to 2:52 a.m. CDT | 12:37 to 2:50 a.m. PDT. |
| November 2, after the clocks go back | 11:40 p.m. on November 1 to 1:57 a.m. EST | 11:34 p.m. on November 1 to 1:52 a.m. CST | 11:37 p.m. on November 1 to 1:50 a.m. PST. |
| December 22, near the shortest day | 11:54 p.m. on December 21 to 2:24 a.m. EST | 11:49 p.m. on December 21 to 2:19 a.m. CST | 11:51 p.m. on December 21 to 2:14 a.m. PST. |
EST, CST and PST are winter clock time. EDT, CDT and PDT are summer clock time. At the equinox, all three cities match the two hour rule once you undo the time zone and the summer shift.
Look at the last two rows. In November and December, the window can open before midnight on the clock. A baby born at 11:45 p.m. on December 21 in New York has the Sun in the 3rd house. So check the date on the birth record as well as the hour. The sky counts from midnight by the Sun, and the calendar counts from midnight on the clock.
Look also at the two weekends when the clocks change. From March 7 to March 9, the window jumps an hour later on the clock. From October 31 to November 2, it jumps an hour back. The sky did not move. Only the clock did. Before 2007, summer time started in April and ended in late October, so check the clock rule for your birth year.
The odds at each clock hour
We then asked a plain question. Of all US babies born in a given clock hour, how many have the Sun in the 3rd house under Placidus? We used every day from 1940 to 2030, with the exact start and end of each window.
| Clock hour of birth | Share with the Sun in the 3rd house. |
|---|---|
| Before 11 p.m. | None. |
| 11 p.m. to midnight | 2.3 percent of births. |
| Midnight to 1 a.m. | 35.6 percent of births. |
| 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. | 86.9 percent of births. |
| 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. | 66.7 percent of births. |
| 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. | 7.3 percent of births. |
| 4 a.m. or later | Almost none. |
So a US baby born between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on the clock has the Sun in the 3rd house almost nine times in ten. The midnight hour counts mostly in winter time: nine of its cases in ten come between November and March. The 3 a.m. hour counts almost only in summer time, when the clock runs an hour ahead of the Sun. About 95 percent of US cases fall between midnight and 3 a.m. on the clock. About one in eighty comes in the last hour of the day before.
How common is it? A slow hour on the ward
If babies were born at the same rate every minute of the day, the Sun would sit in each house one time in twelve. That is 8.33 percent. Our even clock count gave 8.30 percent under Placidus. The 3rd house is a night room, and US nights are a little shorter than US days over the year, so it comes out a hair under one in twelve.
The CDC, the US public health agency, puts every birth record into one public file each year. The 2024 file holds 3,638,436 births. Only 666 of them lack a time of birth. On an even clock, each hour would get 4.2 percent of births. The midnight hour gets 3.29 percent. The 1 a.m. hour gets 3.17 percent, and the 2 a.m. hour 3.08 percent. The 4 a.m. hour is the slowest of the day, at 3.02 percent. The 8 a.m. hour is the busiest, at 6.3 percent.
So we weighted our count by the real 2024 birth hours, with the month and the day of the week kept apart.
| Birth hours used | Placidus houses | Whole sign houses. |
|---|---|---|
| Even clock | 8.30 percent | 8.30 percent. |
| Real US hours, 2024 | 6.29 percent | 6.21 percent. |
With real hours, the Sun in the 3rd house goes from one birth in twelve to about one in sixteen. That is a drop of about a quarter.
It lands close to its two neighbors below the horizon. Our guide to the Sun in the 1st house found 6.13 percent there, in the hours before sunrise. Our guide to the Sun in the 8th house puts the 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses at about 6.1 to 6.3 percent each. Our count agrees. The 3rd is the least rare of the three, because the hours just after midnight are a little busier than the hours before dawn.
So the hunch that the 3rd house holds the emptiest hours of the ward is only half right. Its hours are slow, but the slowest ones, from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., belong to the 2nd and the 1st.
Planned C-sections skip this window
The CDC file says how each baby was born. For a C-section, it also says if labor had started first. A C-section with no labor first is a birth planned ahead. Hospitals book these from the start of the surgery day, and the peak is the 8 a.m. hour. Almost none of them are booked for the hours after midnight.
So we ran the count for each kind of birth.
| Kind of birth in 2024 | Share of all births | Sun in the 3rd house, Placidus. |
|---|---|---|
| C-section with no labor first | 23 percent of births | 2.7 percent of these births. |
| C-section after labor had started | 9 percent of births | 7.1 percent of these births. |
| Vaginal birth, labor not induced | 40 percent of births | 7.8 percent of these births. |
| Labor induced with drugs, any delivery | 34 percent of births | 6.9 percent of these births. |
A planned C-section baby has the Sun in the 3rd house about one time in thirty-six. Our 1st house guide found about one in thirty for its own window. A baby whose labor started on its own gets close to the even clock rate. The last row overlaps the second, since some induced labors end in a C-section.
Put it together and one figure stands out. Planned C-sections were 23 percent of US births in 2024. Yet they made up only 10 percent of the babies born with the Sun in the 3rd house. The surgery schedule fills the morning rooms and leaves the small hours to labor that starts on its own.
Weekends and weekdays
Hospitals book far fewer planned births on the weekend. So on a Saturday or a Sunday, the night hours hold a bigger slice of the day’s births.
| Day of birth | Sun in the 3rd house, Placidus, real hours. |
|---|---|
| Monday | 4.96 percent. |
| Tuesday | 5.74 percent. |
| Wednesday | 6.06 percent. |
| Thursday | 5.99 percent. |
| Friday | 6.18 percent. |
| Saturday | 8.24 percent. |
| Sunday | 7.88 percent. |
A weekend birth has the Sun in the 3rd house 8.07 percent of the time. That is almost the even clock rate. A weekday birth has it 5.80 percent of the time. Monday is the low point, since it has the most planned C-sections of the week. On a weekend, the hospital clock almost stops mattering for this house.
Winter babies have it more
The 3rd house window grows with the night, so your birth month shifts the odds a lot. With real hours and Placidus, 7.73 percent of December births have the Sun in the 3rd house. In June it is 4.90 percent.
That means your Sun sign shifts the odds too. The table gives the chance of a Sun in the 3rd house for each Sun sign. The even clock column holds for any hour pattern. The real hours column is for a baby born under the 2024 pattern.
| Sun sign | Even clock | Real US hours, 2024. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 7.9 percent | 5.9 percent. |
| Taurus | 7.1 percent | 5.4 percent. |
| Gemini | 6.6 percent | 5.0 percent. |
| Cancer | 6.6 percent | 5.0 percent. |
| Leo | 7.1 percent | 5.4 percent. |
| Virgo | 7.9 percent | 6.0 percent. |
| Libra | 8.8 percent | 6.6 percent. |
| Scorpio | 9.5 percent | 7.4 percent. |
| Sagittarius | 10.1 percent | 7.7 percent. |
| Capricorn | 10.1 percent | 7.7 percent. |
| Aquarius | 9.5 percent | 7.2 percent. |
| Pisces | 8.8 percent | 6.5 percent. |
The even clock column is the same as in our 1st house guide, to the last digit. Each of the three night rooms below the east edge is one third of the Sun’s climb, so each gets the same share. The real hours column is a little higher here, because the hours after midnight are a little busier.
There is a small irony in this table. Modern books pair the 3rd house with Gemini, the 3rd sign. Yet a Gemini Sun is among the least likely to sit in the 3rd house, since Gemini season has the shortest nights of the year.
Whole sign houses: always a night birth too
In whole sign houses, the Sun is in the 3rd house when it sits two signs past your rising sign. The rule has nothing to do with the IC. So the window drifts later or earlier through each month.
Here is the whole sign window in New York, in local clock time.
| Date in 2026 | Whole sign 3rd house, New York | Placidus 3rd house, New York. |
|---|---|---|
| January 15 | 12:49 to 3:22 a.m. EST | 12:05 to 2:31 a.m. EST. |
| March 21 | 4:23 to 5:49 a.m. EDT | 1:03 to 3:03 a.m. EDT. |
| May 1 | 3:08 to 4:19 a.m. EDT | 12:53 to 2:35 a.m. EDT. |
| June 22 | 2:06 to 3:32 a.m. EDT | 12:58 to 2:29 a.m. EDT. |
| August 1 | 12:54 to 2:49 a.m. EDT | 1:02 to 2:41 a.m. EDT. |
| September 23 | 1:43 to 4:15 a.m. EDT | 12:49 to 2:49 a.m. EDT. |
| December 22 | 2:24 to 4:57 a.m. EST | 11:54 p.m. to 2:24 a.m. EST. |
On March 21, the two windows do not touch at all. A baby born at 2 a.m. that day has the Sun in the 3rd house in one system and not in the other. On August 1, they almost match.
With real US birth hours, 6.21 percent of births have the Sun in the whole sign 3rd house. That is close to the 6.29 percent under Placidus. But they are not the same babies. Of the babies with the Sun in the Placidus 3rd house, only 46 percent have it in the whole sign 3rd house too. Most of the rest have it one room further on, in the whole sign 4th.
One thing does hold in both systems. In our 600,000 random US charts, not one whole sign 3rd house Sun was above the horizon. At US latitudes, the whole sign 3rd house is always a night birth, just like the Placidus one. That sets it apart from the 1st house, where the whole sign Sun is already up more than half the time.
The Moon’s room, and the Sun’s room across the chart
The Greeks gave each planet a house where it was glad to be. They called it the planet’s joy. Mercury rejoices in the 1st house, the Moon in the 3rd, Venus in the 5th, Mars in the 6th, the Sun in the 9th, Jupiter in the 11th and Saturn in the 12th. Firmicus Maternus and Paulus of Alexandria both give this list in the 4th century.
The names of the two rooms tell the story. The 3rd house was called the Goddess. The 9th house, right across the chart, was called the God. The Moon took the Goddess and the Sun took the God. Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies from the 2nd century, calls the 3rd the place of the Goddess. He ties it to brothers, friends and time spent abroad.
Why the two joys mirror each other
Here is the part the old lists do not spell out, and the sky makes it plain. The Sun’s joy, the 9th house, is the first third of the afternoon. At the equinox, that is noon to 2 p.m. by the Sun. The Moon’s joy, the 3rd house, is the first third after midnight. At the equinox, that is midnight to 2 a.m. by the Sun.
So the two rooms are the same slot on the clock face, twelve hours apart. One sits just past the top of the sky, in full day. The other sits just past the bottom, in deep night. The Sun belongs to the day, so its joy is the day version. The Moon belongs to the night, so its joy is the night version. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, sets out the same split in plain terms: the Sun is the light of the day, and the Moon is the light of the night.
A Sun in the 3rd house is the Sun standing in its own slot, turned upside down. It is at the right hour of its cycle, on the wrong side of the earth. In the Moon’s house, the Sun is a guest.
The hospital clock takes sides
The two mirror rooms get very different numbers of babies. Our guide to the Sun in the 10th house found 10.36 percent of US births with the Sun in the 9th house, with the same 2024 birth hours. The 3rd house gets 6.29 percent. So the Sun’s own room of joy gets about 1.6 times as many US babies as the Moon’s room across the chart. The early afternoon is a busy time on the ward, and the small hours are quiet.
A night chart, every time
The old writers also split every chart into day and night. They called this sect. A chart is a day chart when the Sun is above the horizon, and a night chart when it is below. A 3rd house Sun is always below the horizon, so it always gives a night chart. In a night chart, the Moon leads the team and the Sun waits in the wings. Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology from 2017, sets out this rule and the joys in plain terms.
So a 3rd house Sun is doubly in the Moon’s world. It is born in the Moon’s hours, and it sits in the Moon’s room. The old reading of such a Sun is a light that serves rather than rules. It shines through daily talk, kin and the near at hand, not through rank.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology from 1647, agrees that the 3rd house is the joy of the Moon. He keeps score with points. A planet in the 1st or the 10th house gets five points. A planet in the 3rd gets one point. That is a weak score, but it is still a plus. For Lilly, a Sun here is quiet, but it is not hurt.
What modern writers add
The modern reading keeps the room and changes the owner. Most modern books give the 3rd house to Mercury and Gemini. The subject becomes the mind, speech and learning.
Liz Greene reads the Sun as the hero’s road, the self you grow into over a life. In the 3rd house, that road runs through the local streets. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols from 1981, reads the 3rd house as your near world and the way you take it in. Stephen Arroyo reads the house of the Sun as the field of life where a person wants to feel most alive. Put that field in the 3rd and the person comes alive by learning, telling and linking people up. Demetra George, who spent years bringing the Greek texts back, keeps the older sense in view: the 3rd is the Moon’s place, tied to kin and to the goddess.
Here is how those readings show up in a life. We give them as the tradition gives them, not as a forecast.
The voice is the stage. With the Sun in the room of speech, the self comes out in what you say and write. Many modern authors see these natives as the ones who explain things, and who think out loud.
Kin matter. The oldest meaning of the room is brothers and sisters. A Sun here puts those bonds near the center of the life story, for good or for ill.
Near, not far. The 3rd house is the short trip, and the 9th house across the chart is the long one. A 3rd house Sun finds its light close to home: the block, the school, the daily round.
The small hours. This one is ours, and it comes from the sky, not the books. A Placidus 3rd house Sun was born in the first quiet stretch after the Sun turned the corner at the bottom of the sky. The night is past its deepest point. The light is on its way back, but it is still far off.
The rooms on each side change the tone. The Sun in the 2nd house sits one room further up the climb, closer to dawn, and our guide to the Sun in the second house covers it. Astrologers read the Sun in the 4th house against this one, because the room just before the IC asks something quite different of the same Sun. A planet can also share this room with the Sun. Our guide to Jupiter in the 3rd house shows how the angle between Jupiter and the Sun sets the hour.
Is your Sun in the 3rd house? Check these three things
First, you need a birth time you can trust. Look for the time on your long form birth record, not a family memory. Under Placidus, a birth in the lower 48 states after 4 a.m. on the clock never has the Sun in the 3rd house. A birth before 11 p.m. never does either.
Second, know which house system your app uses. The two systems can give very different answers. On March 21, 2026, in New York, the Placidus window is 1:03 to 3:03 a.m. EDT. The whole sign window that day is 4:23 to 5:49 a.m. EDT. The two windows do not share a single minute.
Third, allow for error near the edges. A time off by half an hour can move the Sun one room. Near the start of the window, the Sun slides back across the IC into the 4th house. Near the end, it climbs on into the 2nd house.
Your Sun sign comes from the date alone. The house needs the hour. Our guide to the Sun in Leo shows how the date gives the sign while the hour gives the house.
How we counted
We want you to be able to check this, so here is the full method. It is the same setup as our other Sun in the houses guides, so the pages can be read side by side.
Places: every US county, placed at its 2020 center of people from the Census Bureau and weighted by its head count. We grouped the counties into 303 cells, each with its own time zone. Puerto Rico is left out, as it is in the CDC file.
Dates: every day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. We turned each clock time into world time with the official time zone rules, war time and summer time included. For this house we read the clock offset at 1 a.m. local time, since the window sits near midnight.
Birth hours: the CDC natality file for 2024, split by month, day of the week and minute of birth. For the kinds of birth, we used three fields of the same file: the way the baby was born, if labor was induced, and, for a C-section, if labor was tried first. We used the 2024 pattern for every year. Births in the 1970s had far fewer planned C-sections, so for older readers the true share sits between the even clock value and the 2024 value.
Route one: an exact sum. For the Sun, Placidus has a simple rule. The Sun is in the 3rd house during the first third of the time between its lowest point and its rise. We solved for the start and end of that window each day, in each place, with our own formulas for the Sun. When a window opened before clock midnight, we counted that part with the births of the day before. Then we added up the births that fall inside. This gave 6.29 percent, and every figure by kind of birth, by weekday, by month, by sign and by clock hour.
Route two: 600,000 charts drawn at random with a fixed seed, each one built with the Swiss Ephemeris and its own Placidus houses. It gave 6.30 percent, give or take 0.03. It also gave 6.21 percent for the whole sign 3rd house, and the match between the two systems. A draw of 300,000 charts on an even clock gave 8.24 percent, give or take 0.05.
Route three: a regular grid every third day and every two minutes, with our own formulas for the Sun and the rising degree. It was built for our 11th house guide, from the same places and birth hours. It gives 6.20 percent for the whole sign 3rd house with real hours. The routes agree.
Questions people ask
How common is the Sun in the 3rd house?
On an even clock, a hair under one chart in twelve, or 8.30 percent under Placidus. With real US birth hours from 2024, it drops to 6.29 percent, about one birth in sixteen. Only the 1st and the 2nd house are rarer for the Sun under Placidus, and only by a hair.
What time of day gives the Sun in the 3rd house?
Under Placidus, the first third of the time from midnight by the Sun to sunrise. That is midnight to 2 a.m. by the Sun at the equinox. On US clocks, about 95 percent of cases fall between midnight and 3 a.m. The 1 a.m. hour has the best odds, at 86.9 percent.
Is the 3rd house the joy of the Sun?
No. The Greeks gave the 3rd house to the Moon and called it the Goddess. The Sun’s joy is the 9th house, the God, right across the chart. The two rooms are the same slot on the clock, twelve hours apart: just after midnight for the Moon, just after noon for the Sun.
Is the Sun in the 3rd house a day chart or a night chart?
Always a night chart, since the Sun is below the horizon. That holds in Placidus and, at US latitudes, in whole sign houses too. In a night chart, the old writers let the Moon lead.
Can a baby born before midnight have the Sun in the 3rd house?
Yes, mostly from November to March, in the east part of a time zone. The window can then open before clock midnight, by up to about 45 minutes in northern Maine. About one Sun in the 3rd house in eighty comes in the 11 p.m. hour of the day before.
