Jupiter in the 3rd House: Seattle Swings Twice as Hard as Miami

Here is the short answer first. Jupiter in the 3rd house turns up in about one US birth chart in twelve. That is true in Seattle, and it is true in Miami. We checked all 50 of the largest US metro areas, and the rate barely moves from city to city. But that flat number hides a swing. Split the births by the year, and Seattle swings more than twice as hard as Miami. A Seattle baby born in 2019 was twice as likely to get this placement as one born in 2025. In Miami, the same two years differ by only a third. This page shows the count, the method, and the reason.

Where Jupiter sits when it is in your 3rd house

Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house stands for one part of life. The 3rd house stands for the near at hand: speech, study, brothers and sisters, neighbors, and short trips. Our guide to the 3rd house and what it rules covers the room itself. Here we stay with Jupiter in it.

The houses are fixed to the ground, not to the stars. The 1st house starts at the eastern skyline. The 4th house starts at the point straight below your feet. The 3rd house is the slice of sky just past that low point, on the way back up to the east.

So Jupiter in the 3rd house has a plain meaning in the sky. At your birth, Jupiter had just passed the lowest point of its daily path. It was out of sight, under the ground. It would rise in the east some four to six hours later.

The sky turns once a day. So Jupiter passes through the 3rd house once a day, like every planet. How long it stays there is the key to this page. In some charts it stays less than an hour and a half. In others it stays more than two and a half hours.

The room of the Goddess

The Greek astrologers of the first centuries AD gave each of the seven planets one room where it felt at home. They called that room its joy. Firmicus Maternus, writing in Latin around 335 AD, and Paulus Alexandrinus, writing in Greek in 378, give the same list. Mercury joys in the 1st house, the Moon in the 3rd, Venus in the 5th, Mars in the 6th, the Sun in the 9th, Jupiter in the 11th and Saturn in the 12th.

So the 3rd house belongs to the Moon. The Greeks had a name for it to match. They called it the Goddess. Across the chart, the 9th house, the joy of the Sun, was the God. Vettius Valens lists both names in his Anthologies, written in the second century. In Mark Riley’s translation, his chapter on this room is headed “The III Place. The Place of the Goddess”.

That makes Jupiter a guest here, not the host. The same is true on our page about Jupiter in the 5th house, the room of Venus. Jupiter’s own room of joy is the 11th.

Mars is another guest, and our page on Mars in the 3rd house finds it mostly in births after midnight.

Valens has one line on this exact guest. In the same chapter he writes that if Jupiter is with the Moon in the place of the Goddess, the native will be a prophet, fortunate, rich and famous. Note the condition. The promise needs the Moon in the room too. Jupiter alone gets no such line from him.

William Lilly kept the idea in 1647. In Christian Astrology he calls the 3rd house a cadent house and the joy of the Moon. A cadent house is one that falls away from an angle, the four strong points of the chart. Lilly scored a planet’s strength by the room it stood in. The 1st and 10th houses earned five points. The 3rd earned one. So by his count, Jupiter here is a kind planet in a weak seat.

The Sun visits this room every night too, and our guide to the Sun in the 3rd house finds it there in about one US birth in sixteen, between midnight and 3 a.m.

Two ways to cut the room

Chart apps do not all draw the houses the same way. In whole sign houses, the oldest method, each room is one full sign, counted from your rising sign. In Placidus houses, the default on most US sites, each room is one third of the time a point needs to climb from its lowest spot to the eastern skyline.

The two methods give this room to about the same share of people. They do not give it to the same people. Among US births with Jupiter in the Placidus 3rd house, only 48.7 percent also have it in the whole sign 3rd house. Another 41.7 percent have it in the whole sign 4th. Our page on Jupiter in the first house found the same split, about half and half, for the 1st house.

What we measured: the same odds from Miami to Seattle

Most pages say every house gets one chart in twelve. We wanted to test that for US readers. So we counted, minute by minute, where Jupiter stood for births in the 50 largest US metro areas.

Real birth hours matter too, since babies do not arrive at even hours. Our hours come from the CDC natality file 2024. That is the public record of every US birth that year, from the National Center for Health Statistics. It holds 3,638,436 births, and only 666 of them lack a time. The busiest hour is 8 am, with 6.27 percent of births. The quietest is the 4 am hour, with 3.02 percent.

Those quiet night hours weigh far more on a planet tied to the Sun. Our count of Mercury in the 3rd house, a placement of the hours after midnight, finds it in only about one US birth in sixteen.

Across 67 full laps of Jupiter around the zodiac, from 1607 to 2402, this is what we found.

Where and how we countedPlacidus housesWhole sign houses.
All 50 metros, even hours8.35 percent8.42 percent.
All 50 metros, real US hours8.14 percent8.21 percent.
Seattle alone, real US hours8.14 percent8.26 percent.
Miami alone, real US hours8.13 percent8.18 percent.

Seattle sits at 47.6 degrees north. Miami sits at 25.8 degrees north. That is the widest gap between big US cities. Yet the overall rate is the same to within a tenth of a point. For births from 1940 to 2030, the 50 metros all land between 8.08 and 8.11 percent in Placidus.

So if the question is “does my birth city change my odds?”, the plain answer is no. At least, not on average.

Then Jupiter’s sign splits the two cities apart

The average hides two opposite effects that cancel out. To see them, split the births by the sign Jupiter was in. Here is the chance of Jupiter in the 3rd house, with real US birth hours, over the same 67 laps.

Jupiter’s signSeattle, PlacidusMiami, PlacidusSeattle, whole signMiami, whole sign.

Capricorn10.5 percent9.1 percent11.1 percent9.3 percent.
Aquarius9.8 percent8.9 percent10.0 percent9.2 percent.
Pisces8.7 percent8.4 percent7.5 percent8.2 percent.

Read the Seattle column first. With Jupiter in Sagittarius, the chance is 10.6 percent. With Jupiter in Gemini, it is 5.7 percent. That is close to two to one. In Miami, the same two signs give 9.2 and 7.1 percent. The gap there is less than half as wide.

In whole sign houses, the Seattle gap grows to almost three to one: 11.1 percent against 4.1 percent. In Miami, it stays near one and a half to one.

In both cities, the low signs win and the high signs lose. The rich years in Seattle are the poor years in Miami, by comparison, and the other way round. Averaged over a full lap of Jupiter, the two cities end up level.

Why the north stretches the room

The answer is the tilt of the zodiac. The zodiac is the band of sky the Sun and planets move along. It is tilted against the sky’s equator. So some signs ride high in the sky, and some ride low.

Gemini and Cancer ride high. From the US, a planet there spends most of the day above the skyline and only a short time below it. Sagittarius and Capricorn ride low. A planet there spends most of the day below the skyline.

The Placidus 3rd house is one third of a planet’s time below the skyline, on the rising side. A short night path makes a short 3rd house. A long night path makes a long one. The farther north you go, the more the high and low signs pull apart. So Seattle gets the widest swing, and Miami the narrowest.

Whole sign houses follow a related rule. Your 3rd house sign sits two signs after your rising sign. For Jupiter in Gemini to fall there, Aries must be rising. Aries is one of the fastest signs to rise, and it rises fastest of all in the north. In Seattle it crosses the eastern skyline in about an hour. So few birth minutes give that chart.

You can watch the room stretch on real dates. On June 10, 2019, Jupiter was in Sagittarius. In Seattle it sat in the Placidus 3rd house from 1:08 pm to 3:44 pm, Pacific daylight time. That is 2 hours and 36 minutes. In Miami it sat there for 2 hours and 15 minutes. On January 10, 2025, Jupiter was in Gemini. The Seattle window shrank to 1 hour and 24 minutes. The Miami window was 1 hour and 44 minutes. The two cities traded places.

Your birth year, city by city

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign. So the sign effect turns into a birth year effect. These rates use real US birth hours and each city’s own time zone and summer time rules.

Birth year and Jupiter’s main signSeattle, PlacidusMiami, PlacidusSeattle, whole signMiami, whole sign.
2019, Sagittarius10.9 percent9.4 percent11.4 percent9.4 percent.
2024, Taurus and Gemini5.7 percent6.8 percent4.0 percent5.9 percent.
2025, Gemini and Cancer5.5 percent6.9 percent4.7 percent6.5 percent.
2026, Cancer and Leo6.1 percent7.2 percent6.3 percent7.5 percent.
2027, Leo and Virgo7.0 percent7.7 percent8.5 percent8.6 percent.
2030, Capricorn and Aquarius10.4 percent9.2 percent11.3 percent9.3 percent.

In Seattle, the Placidus rate halves from 2019 to 2025: 10.9 percent down to 5.5 percent. In Miami, it drops from 9.4 to 6.9 percent. For the US as a whole, it went from 10.1 percent in 2019 to 6.2 percent in 2025.

The wave repeats every twelve years or so. The US peaks fell in 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2019. The next one comes around 2031. Babies born in 2025 sit at the bottom of the wave, and Seattle babies sit lowest of all.

Our page on Jupiter in the 2nd house found the same kind of birth year wave, one room over. The 2nd and 3rd houses share the same stretch of night sky, so they rise and fall together.

The hospital clock adds a second swing

The hour when Jupiter sits in the 3rd house depends on where it stands from the Sun. When Jupiter faces the Sun from across the sky, it stands highest near midnight. It reaches its lowest point near noon. So it sits in the 3rd house from about 11 am to 4 pm, clock time, with a peak in the 1 pm hour. When Jupiter is next to the Sun, the window moves to about 11 pm to 4 am.

US hospitals are busy at noon and quiet at 2 am. So the angle to the Sun changes the odds, just as it does for the 5th house. For births from 1940 to 2030, with real US hours, here is what we found in Placidus.

Where Jupiter stood from the SunWhen it was in the 3rd houseShare of US births with Jupiter in the 3rd.
Facing the Sun, 150 to 180 degrees awayabout 11 am to 4 pm10.20 percent of births.
Evening Jupiter, 90 to 150 degrees east of the Sunabout 7 am to noon10.43 percent of births.
Next to the Sun, within 30 degreesabout 11 pm to 4 am6.33 percent of births.

The evening Jupiter row is worth a look. An evening Jupiter sits east of the Sun and shines after dusk. Its 3rd house window covers the morning and takes in the 8 am hour. That is when planned C-sections start. So the busiest hour of the hospital day feeds this placement.

With even hours, all three rows would sit near 8.3 percent. The gap comes from the ward, not the sky.

Jupiter in the 3rd house for babies born in 2026 and 2027

Jupiter entered Leo on June 30, 2026, at 5:52 UTC. It leaves for Virgo on July 26, 2027, at 4:49 UTC. So most babies born in the next ten months will have Jupiter in Leo. Here are the Placidus 3rd house windows on sample dates, in local clock time.

Birth dateSeattle, Pacific timeMiami, Eastern time.
October 15, 20269:08 pm to 10:47 pm9:20 pm to 11:11 pm.
December 15, 20264:28 pm to 6:08 pm4:39 pm to 6:31 pm.
February 15, 202712:02 pm to 1:40 pm12:14 pm to 2:04 pm.
April 15, 20278:53 am to 10:29 am9:05 am to 10:54 am.
June 15, 20275:15 am to 6:53 am5:26 am to 7:17 am.

Three things stand out. First, the window moves about two hours earlier each month. Second, the Seattle window runs about 1 hour and 38 minutes. The Miami window runs about 1 hour and 50 minutes. With Jupiter in Leo, the south gets the longer room. Third, the window crosses the 8 am hour between the April and June rows. Babies born by planned C-section in that stretch have a good chance of this placement.

Our page on Jupiter in Leo covers the sign side of these charts.

What the old and new books say Jupiter does here

Numbers tell you how common a placement is. They do not tell you what it means. For that, astrologers turn to the books.

Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria in the second century. He counts Jupiter, Venus and the Moon as the kind planets, because they warm and moisten. So in the room of the Moon, Jupiter keeps kind company.

Vettius Valens, as we saw, ties Jupiter’s best result here to the Moon being in the room too. William Lilly reads the 3rd house for brothers and sisters, kin, neighbors, letters, rumors and short journeys. In his rules, a kind planet in this room speaks well of those things. It is a small good, in a weak seat.

Modern writers ask a different question. They ask what you reach for and why. Liz Greene reads Jupiter as the part of you that trusts life will open up. Robert Hand reads it as growth and the urge to take part in something larger. Stephen Arroyo ties Jupiter to faith and to where you feel most free. In the room of daily talk, that faith goes into ideas and the people close by.

Demetra George and Chris Brennan both went back to the Greek sources. Brennan’s 2017 book, Hellenistic Astrology, sets out the joys and the names of the rooms. George’s work keeps the old reading of gifts next to the new reading of meaning. The two views do not fight. The old one says what arrives. The new one says where you put your trust.

How Jupiter in the 3rd house plays out

Here is how astrologers turn that into a life. None of it is a forecast. It is a way to read the room.

  • Learning as a habit. You pick up facts, names and skills with ease, and you like to pass them on.
  • Talk that lifts. You explain big ideas in plain words. People leave a chat with you in a better mood.
  • Brothers, sisters and cousins. The old books read this room for siblings. Jupiter here points to kin who help, or to a role as the one who helps them.
  • Neighbors and the street. You know people nearby, and they know you. Local groups, school boards and clubs suit you.
  • Short trips with a purpose. A drive to the next town turns into a new contact or a new idea.

The shadow side is the same trait turned up too loud. You promise more than you can do. You talk before you check the facts. You start ten small projects and finish two. The fix is not less talk. It is talk with a list and a date.

Next along the wheel sits Jupiter in the fourth house, where the home replaces the concerns of this room.

How we checked the numbers

Here is the method, so you can rebuild every figure.

  • Places: the 50 largest US metro areas, from New York to Birmingham, each weighted by its 2020 census size.
  • Reader window: every day from January 1, 1940, to December 31, 2030, every ten minutes of local clock time. Each city used its real time zone and summer time rules for that date.
  • Long window: 67 full laps of Jupiter, from its entry into Aries on May 9, 1607, to its entry into Aries on March 3, 2402. We took every fifth day, every ten minutes, on standard time.
  • Planets: Swiss Ephemeris, the star table most chart software uses, in the tropical zodiac.
  • Houses: Placidus and whole sign, worked out from the sky with our own formulas.
  • Birth hours: each ten minute slot weighted by its share of births in the CDC natality file 2024, for that month and that day of the week.

We checked the work three ways. First, on 20,000 random charts from 1600 to 2400, our house formulas matched the Swiss Ephemeris house routine in every case. Second, we drew 150,000 US births at random with a fixed seed and a standard number tool. For each, the Swiss Ephemeris routine gave the house. That route gave 8.10 percent in Placidus, plus or minus 0.07, against 8.10 percent from the grid. Third, a second star table, astronomy-engine, put Jupiter within 0.003 degrees of the first.

Two limits matter. The 2024 hours are one year’s pattern, applied to every year. Births in 1950 were not timed by surgery plans the way they are now. And clock time is not Sun time. Your place in your time zone, and summer time, can shift Sun time by an hour or more. The sky follows Sun time, so our windows use each city’s true longitude.

How to check your own chart

You need three things: your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth city. The time is the one people get wrong.

  • Use the time on your birth record, not a family memory. In Seattle, with Jupiter in Gemini, the room lasts less than an hour and a half.
  • Enter the clock time as written. Good chart software turns it into Sun time by itself.
  • Cast your chart in both house systems. If Jupiter is in the 3rd in one and the 2nd or 4th in the other, read both rooms.
  • Look at the Moon. If it shares the 3rd house with Jupiter, you hold the pairing Valens singled out.
  • Note Jupiter’s sign and your birth city. Use the tables above to see whether you hold a common or a rare version of the placement.

Frequently asked questions

How common is Jupiter in the 3rd house?

About one US birth in twelve. With real US birth hours, we found 8.14 percent in Placidus and 8.21 percent in whole sign houses, over 67 full laps of Jupiter from 1607 to 2402.

Does where I was born in the US change the odds?

Not on average. Seattle and Miami both land at about 8.1 percent. But your city changes how much your birth year matters. In Seattle, the rate ran from 10.9 percent for 2019 births to 5.5 percent for 2025 births. In Miami, it ran from 9.4 to 6.9 percent.

Is the 3rd house the joy of Jupiter?

No. The Greeks gave the 3rd house to the Moon and called it the Goddess. Jupiter’s joy is the 11th house. Firmicus Maternus and Paulus Alexandrinus give the same list, and Vettius Valens uses the name Goddess.

What did Vettius Valens say about Jupiter in the 3rd house?

In Mark Riley’s translation, Valens writes that Jupiter with the Moon in the place of the Goddess makes the native a prophet, fortunate, rich and famous. The line needs the Moon in the room as well.

What time of day gives Jupiter in the 3rd house?

It depends on where Jupiter stood from the Sun. Facing the Sun, the window runs from about 11 am to 4 pm, clock time. Next to the Sun, it runs from about 11 pm to 4 am. For babies born in Seattle or Miami in 2026 and 2027, the table above gives sample windows.

Why does one app show Jupiter in my 3rd house and another in my 4th?

The apps use different house systems. About 42 percent of US births with Jupiter in the Placidus 3rd house have it in the whole sign 4th house instead.
