Cancer Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility starts with a record. Venus spends more time in Cancer than in any other sign. So of the twelve pairs where both partners share a Venus sign, this one turns up the most. It holds a second record too. No other Venus pair is as likely to include someone whose Venus matches their own Sun sign.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Venus as a guest in the Moon’s house
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Ruler of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer Venus | No major rank, a guest. | The Moon. |
| Cancer Venus | No major rank, a guest. | The Moon. |
Ptolemy set out these ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. In chapter 17, he gave Cancer to the Moon and Leo to the Sun. He chose them because they are the most northern signs, closest to our zenith, and so the warmest. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, he wrote in chapter 19, and Mars falls there. Venus gets no major rank in the sign.
Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. Venus owns a few degrees in Cancer, her terms, but nothing more. So she loves in the manner of her host, the Moon: through care, food, memory and home. Our page on Venus in Cancer covers this placement in full.
Ptolemy did tie Venus to Cancer in two other ways. First, he gave her the house of Taurus partly because it sits a sextile, two signs, from Cancer, the house of the Moon. Second, in chapter 18, he sorts the signs into four triangles. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces form the water triangle. He gave it to Mars, with the Moon as co-ruler by night and Venus by day. So in a day chart, Venus holds a share in running Cancer. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon.
Same sign: a conjunction by sign
When two Venuses sit in the same sign, astrologers call it a conjunction. It means the two points share one stretch of the sky. Ptolemy did not list the conjunction among his aspects in chapter 13. His four aspects are the opposition, trine, square and sextile. Later authors treat the conjunction as a link of its own.
Cancer is a water sign and a feminine one, the old term for earth and water signs. Ptolemy also called it a solstitial sign. The Sun turns there at the summer solstice and starts the hot season. Modern astrologers call it cardinal, a sign that begins things.
Two people with the same Venus sign share a taste in love. Both value a safe home and a long memory. Both show care before they show desire. The tradition reads this as ease of understanding, with one risk: two partners who both wait to be cared for.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Cancer | 8.62 percent | First of twelve, the most common. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | Last of twelve, the rarest. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Why does Cancer win? On average, Venus keeps pace with the Sun. The Sun moves slowest in early July, when Earth is farthest from it. So the signs of early summer hold Venus a little longer.
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that both have Venus in Cancer? Square the share of Cancer. The answer is 0.74 percent, or about one couple in 134. That ranks 67th of the 78 Venus pairs. This low rank is normal for a same-sign pair. A mixed pair can form two ways, one partner or the other in each sign. A same-sign pair can only form one way, so all twelve sit near the bottom of the list.
| Same-sign Venus pair | Share of couples | Place among the twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer and Cancer | 0.74 percent | First, about one couple in 134. |
| Taurus and Taurus | 0.74 percent | A close second. |
| Gemini and Gemini | 0.72 percent | Third. |
| Capricorn and Capricorn | 0.65 percent | Last, about one couple in 155. |
Which Sun signs sit behind a Cancer Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The table shows the split for Cancer, as a share of all people with Venus there.
| Sun sign | Share of Cancer Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | 8.27 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Gemini | 29.33 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Cancer | 24.07 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Leo | 29.67 percent | The largest group. |
| Virgo | 8.66 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
In calendar terms, Cancer Venus people are born between about April 20 and September 22. Both partners come from that same five-month window.
Same Venus, different Suns
Since both partners draw from the same list, they can share a Sun sign in five ways. We added up all five. The two Suns match in 24.63 percent of these couples, about one in four. Two Leo Suns come first, at 8.80 percent. Two Gemini Suns follow, at 8.60 percent. Two Cancer Suns come third, at 5.79 percent.
So three couples in four have different Suns. We multiplied each partner’s Sun shares to rank the mixes.
| Mix of Sun signs | Share of these couples | Angle between the Suns. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini and Leo | 17.40 percent | A sextile, with Cancer between. |
| Cancer and Leo | 14.28 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Gemini and Cancer | 14.12 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Leo and Leo | 8.80 percent | The same sign. |
| Gemini and Gemini | 8.60 percent | The same sign. |
The likeliest couple is one Gemini Sun and one Leo Sun, about one couple in six. These are the two signs on either side of Cancer. So the typical pair of Cancer Venuses sits between two Suns that stand one sign apart from Cancer in opposite directions.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Semi-sextile | 38.4 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Sextile | 25.6 percent | A friendly link, two signs apart. |
| Same sign | 24.6 percent | The Suns match. |
| Square | 10.0 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Trine | 1.4 percent | Only a Taurus Sun with a Virgo Sun. |
The Suns of this couple are never more than four signs apart. They never form an opposition. This is the closest Sun spread a Venus pair can have, and every same-sign pair shares it.
A record for Venus in your own Sun sign
Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. For Cancer Venus people, the figure is 24.07 percent, the highest of the twelve signs.
Now look at couples. In 42.34 percent of Cancer Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That is the highest share among all 78 Venus pairs. In 5.79 percent, both do. Those are the couples with two Cancer Suns, about one in 17.
Many readers land here because they are two Cancer Suns. Our page on Cancer and Cancer compatibility gives the numbers for that Sun pair. Does it make them this Venus pair? Only in one couple in 17 or so. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The conjunction in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses in one sign can sit anywhere from 0 to 29 degrees apart. The margin allowed around an exact match is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside Cancer to see how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with a true conjunction | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.01 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 36.03 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.27 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.62 percent | Just over half. |
These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. They do show one thing. Sharing a sign does not mean sharing a degree. More than half of these couples have Venuses more than 8 degrees apart. Picture Venus at 1 degree Cancer and at 28 degrees Cancer. By sign they are joined. In the sky, 27 degrees lie between them.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both love through care: a meal, a warm room, a remembered date.
- Memory. Both keep the past close. Old gifts, old stories and old hurts all stay in the house.
- Tone. Both feel first and speak later. Silence can mean comfort, or it can mean a wound.
- The sore spot. Each partner can wait for the other to reach out first. Then both wait.
A simple habit helps. Agree that either partner can say “I need care tonight” with no reason given. The other answers with one act, not a debate. Each gets to be the carer and the cared for, in turn.
The Moon, the host of both Venuses, changes sign a little more than every two days. The tradition links Cancer to that rhythm of change and return. Read that way, this couple does best with small, steady rituals.
The same sign through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Cancer Moon and Cancer Moon compatibility covers the same sign from the Moon’s side. A Cancer Venus with a Taurus Venus makes the most common of all 78 Venus pairs, in Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility. Two Taurus Venuses make the runner-up among same-sign pairs, in Taurus Venus and Taurus Venus compatibility.
A Cancer Venus squares a Venus at home in Venus in Cancer and Venus in Libra compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a shared Venus sign is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside the sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 11 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are two Cancer Venuses compatible?
They share one sign, which astrologers read as a conjunction. Both love through care and home. At an 8 degree orb, only 46.27 percent of these couples have Venuses truly close. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Cancer Venus and Cancer Venus couple?
About one couple in 134, or 0.74 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It is the most common of the twelve same-sign Venus pairs.
Is Venus strong in Cancer?
Venus has no major rank in Cancer, so astrologers call her peregrine, a guest in the Moon’s sign. In Ptolemy’s scheme, she co-rules the water triangle by day.
Do two Cancer Venus people share a Sun sign?
In about one couple in four. Two Leo Suns and two Gemini Suns are more common matches than two Cancer Suns.
What is the most likely Sun pair for two Cancer Venuses?
One Gemini Sun and one Leo Sun, at 17.40 percent of these couples, about one in six.
