Cancer and Cancer compatibility sounds like the simplest match in the zodiac. Same sign, same season, same ruler. The Moon rules Cancer, so a Cancer couple has one ruler for two people. Sign books call it a home with two keepers.
We checked that picture with real numbers. Two Cancers do share a ruler. But the ruler is the Moon, and the Moon does not sit still. It crosses the whole zodiac in about 27 days. So the Moon each partner was born under lands in the same sign for only 1 Cancer couple in 12. No pair of signs can share its ruler’s sign more rarely than that.
This guide gives you that figure, how common a Cancer and Cancer couple is in the US, how far apart two Cancer birthdays land, and what the old books say about the pair. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The quick answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Cancer and Cancer couple? | About 1 random US couple in 128, or 0.78 percent. |
| What would an even split give? | 1 couple in 144, or 0.69 percent. |
| How many Cancer couples have both Moons in one sign? | 1 couple in 12, the lowest any pair can reach. |
| How many have at least one Moon in Cancer? | About 1 couple in 6. |
| How many have Suns within 8 degrees? | 46 percent, just under half. |
| Did a real count of marriages favor same sign couples? | No, once form errors were removed. |
How common is a Cancer and Cancer couple?
Most pages on this pair open with a score, such as 90 percent. Nobody says how the score is made, so you cannot check it. We began with a count you can check: how many people are born under each sign.
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Cancer season runs from about June 20 or 21 to July 22 or 23. The exact hour moves a little each year. That is why our guide to the zodiac signs and their dates checks each date against the real sky.
We then counted births. Two US data sets gave the same picture.
| Source of the births | Share born Cancer | Chance a random couple is two Cancers. |
|---|---|---|
| US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date | 8.84 percent | 0.78 percent, or 1 in 128. |
| US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date | 8.87 percent | 0.79 percent, or 1 in 127. |
| If all twelve signs were equal | 8.33 percent | 0.69 percent, or 1 in 144. |
Why not multiply by two, as for a mixed pair? A Cancer and Leo couple can form two ways. The woman can be the Cancer, or the man can. Two Cancers can form only one way. So the chance is the Cancer share times itself: 8.84 percent times 8.84 percent.
That makes Cancer and Cancer the third most common same sign couple in the US. Only Leo and Leo and Virgo and Virgo come first, each near 1 in 125. The rarest is Capricorn and Capricorn, at about 1 in 172. A Cancer is about 6 percent more likely to be born than an even split would give. Pair two of them, and the edge grows to about 12 percent.
Why there are so many Cancers
Cancer is the third most common Sun sign in US births, after Leo and Virgo. Two plain facts explain it. Neither one is about character.
First, the season is long. The Sun spends 31.451 days in Cancer on average, the longest stay of the twelve. Our page on the Cancer sign and its season works that out from the real entry times. In early July, the Earth is at its farthest from the Sun and moves at its slowest. So the Sun seems to crawl through Cancer.
Second, US births climb through the summer. The busiest months are August and September. Cancer sits on the way up to them. Put a long season and busy days together, and you get a common sign. Pair two of them, and the effect doubles.
One ruler, two Moons
Here is the part no other page on this pair measures. In astrology, each sign has a ruler, a planet said to be at home there. The Moon rules Cancer. So every Cancer has the Moon as the ruler of their Sun sign.
That sounds like a deep link for a couple. Both partners answer to the same planet. But a ruler is not only a name. It also has a place in each chart. The sign book question is simple: where was the Moon when each of you was born?
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It clears a sign in about two and a half days. During one Cancer season, it runs through all twelve signs and starts again. So the Moon’s sign at birth is close to a free draw for any Cancer.
What we measured
We placed the Sun and the Moon every hour from 1600 to 2400. For each hour with the Sun in Cancer, we noted the Moon’s sign. That is 800 years and more than 600,000 hours of Cancer season. We then asked what happens when two Cancers born in different years pair up.
| What the two Moons do in a Cancer and Cancer couple | Share of couples. |
|---|---|
| Both Moons in the same sign | 8.33 percent, or 1 couple in 12. |
| Both Moons in the same element | 25.0 percent, or 1 couple in 4. |
| At least one Moon in Cancer | 15.7 percent, about 1 couple in 6. |
| Both Moons in Cancer | 0.67 percent, about 1 couple in 149. |
An element is one of four groups of signs: fire, earth, air and water. Cancer is a water sign, with Scorpio and Pisces.
Why 1 in 12 is the floor
Think of each partner’s Moon as a spin of a wheel with twelve slots. If some slots were bigger, two spins would land together more. When all twelve slots are the same size, they land together least: 1 time in 12. No shape of the wheel can do better at keeping them apart.
For Cancer couples, the twelve Moon slots are almost exactly equal. Every sign got close to 8.3 percent of Cancer births, within a fraction of a point. So Cancer couples share a Moon sign 8.334 percent of the time. The floor is 8.333 percent.
Compare the other end. Leo is ruled by the Sun. Two Leos always have their ruler in the same sign, since the Sun is what makes them Leo. So the two same sign couples ruled by the two lights sit at the two ends of the scale. Leo couples share their ruler’s sign every time. Cancer couples share it as rarely as any pair can.
A double Cancer couple
The Moon sits in Cancer for about 8.2 percent of Cancers. Astrologers call that a double Cancer, with the Sun and the Moon in the same sign. Our guide to the Moon in Cancer covers what that placement means on its own.
A couple where both partners are double Cancers is rare. It happens in about 1 Cancer couple in 149. Across all random US couples, it comes to about 1 in 19,000.
Why 8.2 and not 8.33 percent? A Cancer with the Moon in Cancer was born close to a new Moon, when the Sun and Moon line up. The Moon moves about 3 percent faster near the new Moon and the full Moon than at the half Moon. Astronomers call this the variation. Tycho Brahe described it in the 1590s. The faster the Moon moves, the less time it spends in a sign. So it spends a bit less time in the Sun’s own sign.
Same sign, but not always the same Sun
A sign is a 30 degree slice. Two people can share the sign without sharing the Sun’s exact place. A Cancer born on June 22 and one born on July 21 have Suns about 28 degrees apart.
Astrologers call two points close together a conjunction. They count it only when the gap is small. That allowed gap is called the orb. So we measured how many Cancer couples fall inside each orb, with every pair weighted by real US births.
| Orb, the allowed gap between the two Suns | Share of Cancer and Cancer couples inside it. |
|---|---|
| 1 degree, near the same birthday | 6.6 percent, about 1 couple in 15. |
| 3 degrees | 19.1 percent, about 1 couple in 5. |
| 6 degrees | 36.1 percent, about 1 couple in 3. |
| 8 degrees, a common choice | 46.3 percent, just under half. |
| 10 degrees, a wide margin | 55.6 percent, just over half. |
These shares match the ones we found for two Virgos. That is expected. Births spread almost evenly inside any sign, so the math comes out the same. The point for you is plain. At the usual 8 degrees, fewer than half of Cancer couples have a true Sun conjunction.
Now the calendar. The average gap between two Cancer birthdays is 10.5 days. Half of all pairs are 9 days apart or less. About 1 pair in 32 shares a birthday, against 1 in 365 for two random people. The gap is a little wider than for Virgo, because the Cancer season is longer.
The census that seemed to favor same sign couples
A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if like draws like. For that, the best test we know is a British one.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. He had the birth dates of both partners. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version in March 2008.
At first, every same sign pair looked a little too common. Then Voas traced the extra couples to the census form. The person filling it in would copy their own birthday into the spouse’s box. Some wrote January 1 when they did not know a date. Each slip turned a couple into a same sign couple.
After the clean up, no sign pair stood out. Our page on Virgo and Virgo compatibility walks through that census typo step by step. The result holds for Cancer too. Cancers do not seek each other out, and they do not avoid each other.
What the old books say about Cancer with Cancer
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is one of the founding books of Western astrology. In Book 1, he sorts the signs in several ways. Two Cancers match on all of them.
| Grouping in the Tetrabiblos | Where Cancer falls. |
|---|---|
| Gender | Female, one of the six night signs. |
| Kind of season | A turning sign, since summer starts with it. |
| Element group | The water triangle, with Scorpio and Pisces. |
| Rulers of that group | Mars, with Venus and the Moon to help. |
| House ruler | The Moon. |
| Planet honored there | Jupiter, which is exalted in Cancer. |
| Planets weak there | Saturn in exile, and Mars in its fall. |
Ptolemy counts four aspects, or angles, between signs. They are the opposition, trine, square and sextile. Two planets in the same sign form none of the four. Later writers call that link a conjunction. Hellenistic astrologers, as Chris Brennan explains in his book on that period, called it being present together. It is a bond of shared space, not of angle.
The sign with no mirror
Ptolemy has two more links between signs. Both leave Cancer in an odd spot.
First, signs that sit the same distance from a solstice “behold” each other. When the Sun is in either one, the days are the same length. Counted in whole signs, the translator Frank Robbins lists five such pairs in his note 83. Then he adds that Cancer and Capricorn “are left without mates.” Cancer starts at the summer solstice, so nothing lies on the far side to mirror it.
Read degree by degree instead, as William Lilly did in his Christian Astrology of 1647, each degree has a mirror point. On that reading, Cancer mirrors Gemini. Either way, Cancer does not behold Cancer. Our page on Cancer and Capricorn compatibility follows the other sign left without a mate.
Second, some signs “command” and others “obey.” In whole signs, Robbins lists Cancer as commanding Capricorn, in his note 80. Again, the partner is another sign.
So in the old system, the bond of a Cancer couple is sameness itself. Same ruler, same element, same season. The tradition adds no second voice. The Moon supplies one anyway, since it lands in a different sign for 11 couples in 12.
Two Cancers in daily life
Here is how the style looks when it meets itself. These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know.
Cancer, as a turning water sign, starts things that feel like home. A shared meal. A family custom. A room that feels safe. Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the elements, calls water the element of feeling. Cancer feels first and then moves to protect.
Put two of them together and the sign books see a warm, closed circle. Both remember dates. Both read a mood before a word is said. Both would rather host at home than go out.
The same trait cuts two ways. Two partners who pull back when hurt can both wait for the other to reach out. The quiet can stretch for days. The fix is not to stop feeling. It is to agree on who knocks first.
The Sun sets the direction, and other planets set the daily weather. What each partner finds lovely is a Venus question, not a Sun one. That side is taken up in Cancer and Cancer Venus placements.
Where the friction shows up
With the same sign on both sides, the snags come from too much of one thing, not from a clash. Here are four from the sign books, with a small step for each.
| Where it snags | What one Cancer feels | What the other Cancer feels | A small step that helps. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hurt | Safer after pulling back | Shut out by the silence | Agree on a time limit for going quiet. |
| Family | Pulled toward their own kin | Pulled toward theirs | Plan the holidays a month ahead. |
| Care | Loved when looked after | Tired from doing the looking after | Take turns being the one who is cared for. |
| Moods | Sure the other can tell | Left to guess | Name the mood out loud in one word. |
None of these steps needs a chart. Any two close people can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.
The two Moons count for more than the shared Sun
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. For this pair, the Moons matter most.
Our guide to moon sign compatibility compares the twelve Moon signs, pair by pair.
In the sign books, the Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. For a Cancer, it also rules the Sun sign. So when two Cancers compare charts, the Moon speaks twice. And 11 times in 12, it speaks from two different signs.
Say one partner has the Moon in Aries and the other in Taurus. The first wants comfort fast and direct. The second wants it slow and steady. Both are Cancers, but their needs for safety differ. That gap says more than the shared Sun does.
Voas saw this reply coming. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show up in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives.
How we measured
Birth shares come from real daily counts. We took US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security Administration file. We checked them against the 1994 to 2003 file of the National Center for Health Statistics. The site FiveThirtyEight compiled both. For each date, we placed the Sun with exact entry times into each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side.
The Moon figures used two routes. Route one used the code library Astronomy Engine, with one step per hour from 1600 to 2400. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris, with one step every 47 minutes over the same years. Both gave the Moon in Cancer for 8.2 percent of Cancers, and both gave a shared Moon sign for 8.334 percent of couples. We use 800 years because the Moon’s path shifts over cycles of about 9 and 19 years. A short span gives a skewed share. US Cancer births from 2000 to 2014 alone put the Cancer Moon at 8.46 percent, yet still gave a shared Moon sign 1 time in 12.
The orbs and birthday gaps also used two routes. Route one took the 2000 to 2014 births with the Swiss Ephemeris, 96 steps per day. Route two took the 1994 to 2003 births with Astronomy Engine, 48 steps per day. Both gave 46 percent within 8 degrees and a 10.5 day average gap.
The census facts come from the Voas paper, found online at magonia.com. The Ptolemy points follow the Loeb edition translated by Frank Robbins, Book 1, chapters 11 to 19, with his notes 80 and 83.
The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. People move, and many couples meet across borders. Partners born in the same year would not have fully separate Moons. The US figures are a close guide, not a count of real couples.
Questions people ask
Are two Cancers compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, over ten million marriages in England and Wales, found no pull between same sign partners once form errors were removed. As a symbol, the pair shares one ruler, the Moon, and one element, water.
How common is a Cancer and Cancer couple?
About 0.78 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 128, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. An even split of signs would give 1 in 144.
Do two Cancers have the same Moon sign?
Only about 1 couple in 12. The Moon rules Cancer but crosses all twelve signs during one Cancer season. So each partner’s Moon is close to a free draw.
What is a double Cancer couple?
A couple where both partners have the Sun and the Moon in Cancer. About 1 Cancer couple in 149 fits, or about 1 random US couple in 19,000.
Is Cancer and Cancer a conjunction?
By sign, yes. By degree, only 46 percent of Cancer couples have Suns within 8 degrees. The average gap between two Cancer birthdays is about 10.5 days.
Which sign does Cancer behold in Ptolemy?
In whole signs, none: Robbins says Cancer and Capricorn are left without mates. Degree by degree, as Lilly read it, Cancer mirrors Gemini.
