Venus in the 11th House: Planned C-Sections Almost Double It

Venus in the 11th house is love that lives among friends. It is the crush that starts in a group chat, the gift that comes through a friend of a friend, the art you make with a crew. That is the reading most pages give you. But this placement also rests on a plain fact about the clock, and no other page puts a number on it.

I counted US births hour by hour. With birth times spread evenly over the day, Venus lands in the 11th house in one chart in twelve. With the real hours at which US babies arrive, it lands there in about one chart in ten. And among babies born by planned C-section, it lands there in more than one chart in seven. That is 1.8 times the even rate. This page shows how I got there, so you can check it. Then it turns to what the old and new astrologers say the placement means.

The 11th house is the sky just before the top

Think of your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room holds one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The 11th house holds friends, groups, hopes and the help that comes to you through other people. The Greek-speaking astrologers called it Good Spirit. Our guide to the 11th house and its old name tells that story in full.

Where the room sits in the sky matters here. The top of the chart is the point the Sun reaches at midday. Astrologers call it the Midheaven. A planet climbs from the eastern skyline to that top point in about six hours. The Placidus system cuts that climb into three rooms. The 12th house is the first part, just after the planet rises. The 11th house is the middle part. The 10th house is the last part, just before the top.

The sky turns once a day, so each planet passes through this room once a day. It stays about two hours, a bit more or less with the season. So Venus in the 11th house means one thing in the sky. At the minute you were born, Venus was partway up the eastern sky, about two to four hours after it rose.

Venus stays close to the Sun, so the hour decides the room

Venus never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, it can get 47 degrees away at most. That gap is called its elongation, which just means the angle between Venus and the Sun as we see them. It is less than two signs of the zodiac.

So if Venus is high in the southeast, the Sun is up too, or close to it. That is the first rule. Venus in the 11th house is a daytime birth, and mostly a morning one.

There are two ways it can happen. When Venus sits west of the Sun, it rises first. You see it at dawn as the morning star. When Venus sits east of the Sun, it rises after the Sun and shows up after sunset in the west. That is the evening star. Venus swaps between the two roles on a cycle of about nineteen months.

A morning-star Venus climbs into the 11th house early, before the Sun gets high. An evening-star Venus gets there later, near midday. Here is a real case in New York, with one of each. The times are Placidus houses in New York clock time.

Birth date in New YorkKind of Venus that dayVenus in the 11th house, clock time.
July 15, 2026Evening star, 43 degrees east of the SunFrom 11:35 am to 1:45 pm.
January 15, 2027Morning star, 46 degrees west of the SunFrom 5:39 am to 7:12 am.

Same city, same room, two very different clocks. On the July day, a baby born at 9 am has Venus in the 12th house, not the 11th. On the January day, a baby born at 9 am already has it in the 10th.

One note on that clock. Every time on this page is clock time, the time you would find on a birth record. It is the legal time in the local time zone, with summer time where it applied. Sun time is not the same. In July, New York runs an hour ahead on summer time, so the Sun there stands highest near 1 pm on the clock.

Two ways to cut the rooms

You will see two house systems on this page. They split the same sky in two ways. In whole sign houses, the oldest method on record, each room is exactly one sign. In Placidus houses, the rooms are cut by time: each room is one third of the time a point takes to climb from the skyline to the top of the sky. Placidus is the default on most US astrology sites and apps. Our guide to the Placidus house system shows how the cuts are made.

In the New York case, the two systems give very different windows. On July 15, 2026, whole sign houses put Venus in the 11th from 1:54 pm to 4:27 pm. On January 15, 2027, they put it there from 7:40 am to 9:06 am. The Placidus windows came earlier on both days.

That gap is the rule, not the exception. In my count, only 47 percent of the charts with Venus in the 11th in Placidus also have it there in whole sign houses. Another 47 percent have it in the 12th under whole sign. If a site shows Venus in the 11th and an app shows it in the 12th or the 10th, this is the likely reason.

What I measured: how many US births have Venus in the 11th house

Most pages say every house gets one chart in twelve. That is true only if babies are born at random hours. They are not. So I ran the count twice, once with even hours and once with real ones.

The real hours come from the CDC. Its National Center for Health Statistics puts out every US birth record each year as a public file, with the clock time of birth. I used the CDC natality file 2024: 3,638,436 births, of which only 666 had no time. The busiest hour is 8 am, with 6.27 percent of births. The quietest is the 4 am hour, with 3.02 percent.

Here is the method, so you can rebuild every number.

  • Places: the 40 largest US metro areas, from New York to Milwaukee, each weighted by its 2020 census size.
  • Dates: every fifth day from January 1, 1940, to December 31, 2030.
  • Hours: every ten minutes of local clock time, with each city’s real time zone and summer time rules for that date.
  • Planets: Swiss Ephemeris, the star table most astrology software uses, in the tropical zodiac.
  • Houses: Placidus and whole sign, worked out for each of the 38 million points in the grid.
  • Weights: first every clock hour the same, then each ten-minute slot weighted by its share of 2024 births on that day of the week.

This is the result.

Birth hours usedPlacidus housesWhole sign houses.
Even hours, all births8.36 percent of births8.37 percent of births.
Real US hours, all births9.80 percent of births10.23 percent of births.
Real hours, Monday to Friday10.04 percent of births10.53 percent of births.

Real hours, evening-star Venus10.48 percent of births10.38 percent of births.
Real hours, morning-star Venus9.12 percent of births10.09 percent of births.

With even hours, the flat one in twelve holds. With real hours, Venus in the 11th house rises by a sixth in Placidus and by a fifth in whole sign houses. A weekday baby is more likely to have it than a weekend baby, because weekdays hold more planned morning births.

How does that compare with the rooms next door? The same count, with the same 2024 hours, puts Venus in the 12th house at 8.5 percent in Placidus. That is the figure our page on Venus in the 12th house found. In Placidus, only the 10th and the 9th house come out ahead of the 11th. Our pages on Venus in the 1st and the 8th house show the same hospital clock at work at other hours of the day.

Which birth hours put Venus in the 11th house

The next table answers the question people ask first. At what time of day is this placement even possible? It shows, for each clock hour, the share of US births with Venus in the 11th house in Placidus.

So the window runs from about 5 am to 2 pm. Inside it, about one birth in four has Venus in the 11th house. Of all US babies with this placement, 91 percent were born between 6 am and 1 pm on the clock. After 3 pm, it never happens.

The two kinds of Venus split that window. The morning star owns the early part, from 5 am to 9 am. The evening star owns the late part, from 10 am to 2 pm. At 7 am, six in ten babies with a morning-star Venus get this placement.

In whole sign houses, the window is wider and later. It runs from about 6 am to 4 pm, and it is highest from 8 am to 1 pm.

The 8 am surgery slot: what the count confirms, and what it corrects

I started with a guess. Venus in the 11th house is a morning birth. Planned C-sections pile up at 8 am, the first slot of the surgery day. So planned C-sections should push this placement up hard.

The CDC file gives the kind of delivery, so I split the count by it.

Kind of birth in the 2024 CDC fileBusiest hourVenus in the 11th, PlacidusVenus in the 11th, whole sign.
C-section with no labor first, 837,903 births8 am, with 14.2 percent of them15.10 percent of births15.74 percent of births.
Labor that starts on its own, vaginal birthnoon, with 4.6 percent of them8.63 percent of births8.79 percent of births.
C-section after labor had started5 pm, with 5.2 percent of them8.05 percent of births8.44 percent of births.
Labor started with drugs, vaginal birth4 pm, with 5.7 percent of them7.62 percent of births8.31 percent of births.

The first half of the guess held, and then some. A C-section with no labor first is a birth planned ahead. Among those babies, 15.1 percent have Venus in the 11th house in Placidus. That is 1.8 times the even rate, or about one birth in seven. In whole sign houses, it is 15.7 percent.

Turn it around, and the gap shows up again. Planned C-sections are 23 percent of all US births. But they are 35 percent of the US babies with Venus in the 11th house. More than one in three.

The second half of the guess needed a fix. I thought the 8 am slot alone did the work. It does not. Only a quarter of the planned C-section babies with this placement were born in the 8 am hour. Most of the rest came between 9 am and 1 pm. The surgery day keeps going all morning, and the Venus window keeps going with it. The 8 am slot mostly serves the morning star. The late-morning slots serve the evening star. So the planned C-section lift is almost the same for both: 15.4 percent with an evening star, 14.8 percent with a morning star, in Placidus.

One more twist. Labor started with drugs lowers the count, to 7.6 percent. Those births come in the afternoon and evening, after Venus has left this room. Our page on Venus in the 9th house found the reverse for the room past the top of the sky. There the afternoon births do the lifting. Same hospital clock, two different rooms.

Where the Sun sits when Venus is in the 11th

If Venus is in your 11th house, your Sun is close by. I checked where, with real US birth hours, in Placidus.

House of the SunShare of charts with Venus in the 11th.
9th house10.3 percent.
10th house29.9 percent.
11th house26.8 percent.
12th house26.7 percent.
1st house6.2 percent.
Any other houseunder 0.1 percent.

So more than four in five people with Venus in the 11th have the Sun in the 10th, 11th or 12th house. When the Sun sits in the 12th or 1st, the Sun is low in the east and Venus runs ahead of it. That is a morning star. When the Sun sits in the 10th or 9th, Venus trails behind it. That is an evening star.

What I checked, and the limits

I checked the grid a second way. I drew 250,000 births with even hours and 250,000 with real hours, using a fixed-seed random number tool from a standard library, not a hand-made one. For each draw, Swiss Ephemeris gave the exact Venus spot and its own house walls for that minute, with no shortcuts. With real hours, that route gave 9.77 percent in Placidus and 10.25 percent in whole signs. With even hours, it gave 8.37 and 8.34 percent. A third draw of 100,000 planned C-section births gave 15.17 and 15.97 percent. The margin of each draw is about a tenth of a point or less, so the two routes agree.

I also moved the date range, because a short range can fool you. Venus runs on an eight-year cycle. So I ran a second grid over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, in six large cities, with standard time and no summer time. It gave the same answer as the same setup on 1940 to 2030, to the second decimal: 9.24 percent in Placidus with real hours. The long window changes nothing.

That check shows one more thing. In that setup, with no summer time, the real-hours figure is 9.2 percent, not 9.8. Summer time moves the clock an hour ahead of the Sun. So the busy 8 am to noon clock hours land closer to the Venus window. Your birth year and city set how much summer time you had.

Last, a limit worth saying out loud. The CDC hours are from 2024. Births in 1950 were not timed by surgery plans the way they are now, so the old hours were flatter. For an older reader, the true figure sits somewhere between the even-hours row and the real-hours row.

The room of Good Spirit: what the old books say

Numbers tell you who has the placement. They do not tell you what it means. For that, astrologers turn to the books.

The Greek-speaking astrologers of the first centuries AD gave this room a warm name. They called it Good Spirit, Agathos Daimon in Greek. Vettius Valens, who wrote his Anthologies in the second century, tied it to friends, gifts, hopes and help you did not earn. He counted it among the best rooms in the chart.

Ptolemy, who wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria in the same century, calls Venus warm and moist. In his scheme she is a benefic, a planet that brings good things. So the Greek answer for Venus in the 11th house is simple. A kind planet sits in a kind room. The good comes through other people: a friend who opens a door, a patron, a group that has your back.

William Lilly, who printed Christian Astrology in London in 1647, lists friends, hope, trust and praise among the things this room shows. He also gave each room a score for how much it helps a planet. The 10th house and the 1st get five points. The 11th gets four, the same as the 7th and the 4th. In Lilly’s terms, Venus here is well placed and able to act.

Is the 11th house the joy of Venus? No, that is Jupiter

The Greeks gave each of the seven planets one room where it works at ease. They called that room its joy. The fullest lists come from Firmicus Maternus, who wrote in Latin around 335 AD, and from Paulus Alexandrinus, who wrote in 378.

In that list, the 11th house is the joy of Jupiter, the greater benefic. Venus has her joy in the 5th house, the room the Greeks called Good Fortune. Our page on Venus in the 5th house covers her home room.

The two rooms face each other across the chart. Chris Brennan, in his 2017 book Hellenistic Astrology, points out how neat the pattern is. The two kind planets, Venus and Jupiter, sit in the two good rooms, the 5th and the 11th. So Venus in the 11th house is not in her own joy. She is a guest in the joy of her fellow benefic. Read with the old rules, she is an easy guest in a friendly home.

A malefic in this same room is a rougher guest, and our page on Mars in the 11th house counts its share of day charts.

What modern astrologers read in it

Modern writers ask a different question. They ask what you love, and why.

Stephen Arroyo, whose books from the 1970s shaped much of US astrology, reads Venus as what you value and how you give and take love. Put that in the room of friends, and love wants company. You feel most at ease when your affection has a circle around it.

Liz Greene reads the houses as parts of the inner life. In her frame, the 11th house is where you look for your own kind, the people who share your hopes. Venus there makes that search warm rather than cold. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, ties the 11th to shared goals and to the future a group works toward. Demetra George, who has spent decades on the Greek sources, keeps the older reading in view: the good that comes to you from outside.

The old view and the new one do not fight. The old one says what arrives: help, gifts and allies. The new one says what you reach for: a circle of people who feel like home.

Venus in the 11th house in friendship, love and groups

Here is how astrologers turn that into a life. None of it is a forecast. It is a way to read the room.

  • Friends first. Your closest friends can matter as much as a partner. A life with a great partner and no circle feels thin to you.
  • Love that starts as friendship. A bond that grows out of a shared team, class or cause fits this room. So does a partner who gets along with your friends.
  • Beauty made with others. A choir, a band, a mural, a group show. You enjoy art more when many hands make it.
  • Charm that opens doors. People like to help you, and help comes back. This is the gift the Greeks put in the room of Good Spirit.
  • Hope with a warm face. You picture a future full of people you like. You work best toward a goal you share.

The shadow is the flip of the same coin. You can keep the peace in a group at the cost of what you want. You can be a friend to everyone and close to no one. The work here is to let one or two bonds go deep, and to say no to the group when it asks too much.

Next door: the 10th and the 12th house

The clock moves Venus from one room to the next every two hours or so. So it helps to know the rooms on each side.

Venus in the tenth house moves affection into the public record: your name, your work, the face you show the world. It comes just after the 11th in the day, as Venus nears the top of the sky. Venus in the 12th house comes just before. There love stays out of sight, in private rooms and quiet hours.

Put simply, the 12th is love in private, the 11th is love among friends, and the 10th is love in public view. A few minutes on your birth record can move you from one to the next.

How to check your own Venus

You need three things: your birth date, your exact birth time and your birth city. The hour is the one people get wrong.

  • Use the time on your birth record, not a family memory. Venus spends only about two hours in this room, so “some time in the morning” is not enough.
  • Enter the clock time as written. Good chart software turns it into Sun time by itself, with the right time zone and summer time rule for your date.
  • Look at the Sun in your chart. If Venus is in the 11th house, the Sun sits between the 9th and the 1st house. In my count it was in the 10th, 11th or 12th house more than four times in five.
  • See which kind of Venus you have. If Venus sits at a later degree of the zodiac than the Sun, it is an evening star. If it sits earlier, it is a morning star. A birth before 9 am points to a morning star, a birth after 10 am to an evening star.
  • Look at both house systems. If Venus is in the 11th in one and the 10th or 12th in the other, read both rooms.

Frequently asked questions

How common is Venus in the 11th house?

With birth hours spread evenly, it is one chart in twelve, or 8.4 percent. With the real hours of US births in 2024, it is 9.8 percent in Placidus houses and 10.2 percent in whole sign houses. That is about one US birth in ten.

What time of day do you need to be born to have Venus in the 11th house?

In Placidus houses, between about 5 am and 2 pm, clock time. Of all US babies with it, 91 percent were born between 6 am and 1 pm. With a morning-star Venus, the window sits from about 5 am to 9 am. With an evening-star Venus, it runs from about 10 am to 2 pm. After 3 pm, it never happens.

Do planned C-sections make Venus in the 11th house more common?

Yes. Among US babies born by C-section with no labor first, 15.1 percent have Venus in the 11th house in Placidus, 1.8 times the even rate. These births are 23 percent of all US births but 35 percent of those with this placement. The lift comes from the whole surgery morning, not just the 8 am slot.

Is Venus in the 11th house good?

In the Greek tradition, yes. Venus is a benefic, a planet that brings good things, and the 11th house is the room of Good Spirit. William Lilly scored the 11th as one of the strong rooms. It is a claim about meaning, not a promise.

Is the 11th house the joy of Venus?

No. In the Greek joy scheme, the 11th house is the joy of Jupiter. Venus has her joy in the 5th house, the room of Good Fortune. Firmicus Maternus, Paulus Alexandrinus and William Lilly give the same list.
