Venus in the 5th House: Her Joy, and 9 in 10 Are Born After Sunset

Venus in the 5th house is Venus at home in her own room. Love turns to play here: flirting, romance, art, games, children and anything done for the fun of it. That is the reading you will find on most pages. But this placement also rests on a plain fact about the clock, and no other page puts a number on it.

Venus in the 5th house is an evening birth. In the Placidus system, every US baby with it was born between about 4 pm and 3 am, clock time. So I counted who gets it. With birth times spread evenly over the day, Venus lands in the 5th house in one chart in twelve. With the real hours at which US babies arrive, it lands there in 7.46 percent of charts, about one in thirteen. And in one of those charts in nine, the Sun was still in the sky when the baby came. This page shows how I got there, so you can check it. Then it turns to what the old and new astrologers say the placement means.

The room the Greeks called Good Fortune

Think of your birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room holds one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The 5th house holds pleasure, romance, children, games, parties and the things you make for the joy of it. Our guide to the 5th house and its Greek name tells that story in full.

The Greek-speaking astrologers of the first centuries AD gave each of the seven old planets one room where it works at ease. They called that room its joy. The fullest lists come from Firmicus Maternus, who wrote in Latin around 335 AD, and from Paulus Alexandrinus, who wrote in 378. Their list runs like this: Mercury in the 1st, the Moon in the 3rd, Venus in the 5th, Mars in the 6th, the Sun in the 9th, Jupiter in the 11th and Saturn in the 12th.

So the 5th house is the one room where Venus rejoices. The Greeks called it Agathe Tyche, which means Good Fortune. The two kind planets, Venus and Jupiter, took the two good rooms. Venus got the 5th, and Jupiter got the 11th, the Good Spirit, right across the wheel. William Lilly kept the same rule in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647. In his words, Venus joys in the fifth house.

No other house gives Venus this. Our page on Venus in the 11th house finds her there as a guest in the joy of Jupiter. Our page on Venus in the 12th house finds her in the joy of Saturn. Jupiter, for its part, is only a guest in this room, and the Sun’s angle decides who gets Jupiter in the 5th house.

Why the joy of Venus sits below the skyline

The joys are not a random list. Chris Brennan, in his 2017 book Hellenistic Astrology, shows the logic behind it. It rests on sect, the old split of the planets into a day team and a night team.

The day team is the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn. Their joys, the 9th, 11th and 12th, all sit above the skyline, in the part of the chart that is lit by day. The night team is the Moon, Venus and Mars. Their joys, the 3rd, 5th and 6th, all sit below the skyline, in the half of the sky you cannot see. Mercury, who can join either team, has his joy in the 1st, right on the eastern skyline.

Ptolemy, who wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria in the second century, puts Venus on the night team. He calls her warm and moist, and a benefic, a planet that brings good things. Vettius Valens, who wrote his Anthologies in the same century, does the same. So Venus in the 5th house is the night benefic in her own night room. That is why the old authors read it as one of her best spots.

It also raises a question the old books did not have to count. If the joy of Venus is a night room, is Venus in the 5th house a night birth? I checked. The answer is mostly yes, but not always.

Where Venus is when she sits in the 5th house

The 5th house is a slice of sky below the western skyline. The point where the sky meets the ground in the west is where planets set. Below it come the 6th house, then the 5th, then the 4th, down to the point straight under your feet. The sky turns once a day, so each planet passes through the 5th house once a day. It stays about two hours, a bit more or less with the season.

So Venus in the 5th house means one thing in the sky. At the minute you were born, Venus had set in the west some hours before. She was out of sight, under the ground, on her way down to her lowest point.

Venus stays close to the Sun, so the clock picks the room

Venus never strays far from the Sun. The angle between them, as seen from Earth, is called her elongation. I measured it every day from 1600 to 2400. It never went past 47.3 degrees. Her widest swings ranged from 45.3 to 47.3 degrees, with a middle value of 46.3. That is less than two signs of the zodiac.

So when Venus has set and sits below the western skyline, the Sun is close by. That is the first rule. It gives two cases.

When Venus sits west of the Sun, she rises and sets before it. You see her at dawn as the morning star. She runs ahead of the Sun across the sky, so she reaches the 5th house first, in the late afternoon or at dinner time. When Venus sits east of the Sun, she rises and sets after it, and shows up after sunset in the west. That is the evening star. She trails the Sun, so she reaches the 5th house late, near midnight. Venus swaps between the two roles on a cycle of about nineteen months.

Here is a real case in New York, with one of each. The times are Placidus houses in New York clock time.

Birth date in New York Kind of Venus that day Venus in the 5th house, clock time.
Night of July 15 to 16, 2026 Evening star, 43 degrees east of the Sun From 12:16 am to 2:06 am.
January 15, 2027 Morning star, 46 degrees west of the Sun From 3:52 pm to 6:19 pm.

Same city, same room, two clocks that do not touch. The July baby with this Venus comes just after midnight. The January baby comes in the late afternoon. On that day the Sun sets in New York at about 4:54 pm. So for the first hour of the January window, the Sun is still in the sky. That baby has Venus in her joy in a day chart.

These are the same two dates our page on Venus in the 4th house uses. There, Venus reaches the 4th house right after she leaves the 5th: from 2:06 am in July, and from 6:19 pm in January.

One note on that clock. Every time on this page is clock time, the time you would find on a birth record. It is the legal time in the local time zone, with summer time where it applied. Sun time is not the same. In July, New York runs an hour ahead on summer time, so the Sun there reaches its lowest point near 1 am on the clock, not at midnight.

Two ways to cut the rooms

You will see two house systems on this page. They split the same sky in two ways. In whole sign houses, the oldest method on record, each room is exactly one sign. In Placidus houses, the rooms are cut by time: each room is one third of the time a point takes to sink from the western skyline to the bottom of the sky. Placidus is the default on most US astrology sites and apps.

In the New York case, whole sign houses give Venus in the 5th from 12:32 am to 1:58 am in July. In January they give 5:11 pm to 7:44 pm, more than an hour later than Placidus.

That gap is common. In my count, only 46 percent of the charts with Venus in the 5th in Placidus also have it there in whole sign houses. Another 47 percent have it in the 6th under whole sign, and most of the rest in the 4th. If a site shows Venus in the 5th and an app shows it in the 4th or the 6th, this is the likely reason.

What I measured: how many US births have Venus in the 5th house

Most pages say every house gets one chart in twelve. That is true only if babies are born at random hours. They are not. So I ran the count twice, once with even hours and once with real ones.

The real hours come from the CDC. Its National Center for Health Statistics puts out every US birth record each year as a public file, with the clock time of birth. I used the CDC natality file 2024: 3,638,436 births, of which only 666 had no time. The busiest hour is 8 am, with 6.27 percent of births. The quietest is the 4 am hour, with 3.02 percent.

Here is the method, so you can rebuild every number.

  • Places: the 40 largest US metro areas, from New York to Milwaukee, each weighted by its 2020 census size.
  • Dates: every third day from January 2, 1940, to December 31, 2030.
  • Hours: every ten minutes of local clock time, with each city’s real time zone and summer time rules for that date.
  • Planets: Swiss Ephemeris, the star table most astrology software uses, in the tropical zodiac.
  • Houses: Placidus and whole sign, worked out for each of the 64 million points in the grid.
  • Weights: first every clock hour the same, then each ten-minute slot weighted by its share of 2024 births on that day of the week.

This is the result.

Birth hours used Placidus houses Whole sign houses.
Even hours, all births 8.31 percent of births 8.31 percent of births.
Real US hours, all births 7.46 percent of births 7.17 percent of births.
Real hours, Monday to Friday 7.36 percent of births 6.99 percent of births.
Real hours, Saturday and Sunday 7.85 percent of births 7.86 percent of births.
Real hours, morning-star Venus 8.01 percent of births 7.70 percent of births.
Real hours, evening-star Venus 6.91 percent of births 6.64 percent of births.

With even hours, the flat one in twelve holds. With real hours, Venus in the 5th house drops by about a tenth in Placidus and by about a seventh in whole sign houses. A weekend baby is more likely to have it than a weekday baby. Weekends have fewer planned daytime births, so their hours are flatter.

How does that compare with the other rooms? With the same 2024 hours, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th houses come out lower than the 5th in Placidus. The rooms above the skyline gain what the night rooms lose. Our page on Venus in the 9th house found about one birth in ten there, and our pages on Venus in the 1st house and Venus in the 8th house show the same hospital clock at work at other times of day.

Which birth hours put Venus in the 5th house

The next table answers the question people ask first. At what time of day is this placement even possible? It shows, for each clock hour, the share of US births with Venus in the 5th house in Placidus.

Clock hour of birth All births Morning-star Venus Evening-star Venus.
3 am to 3 pm almost none none at all almost none.
3 pm hour under 0.1 percent 0.2 percent none at all.
4 pm hour 2.9 percent 5.8 percent none at all.
5 pm hour 10.1 percent 20.2 percent none at all.
6 pm hour 18.9 percent 37.7 percent under 0.1 percent.
7 pm hour 26.6 percent 51.4 percent 1.8 percent.
8 pm hour 26.9 percent 45.2 percent 8.6 percent.
9 pm hour 23.9 percent 26.6 percent 21.1 percent.
10 pm hour 25.2 percent 10.7 percent 39.6 percent.
11 pm hour 27.2 percent 1.3 percent 53.1 percent.
Midnight hour 23.1 percent none at all 46.2 percent.
1 am hour 12.1 percent none at all 24.2 percent.
2 am hour 2.5 percent none at all 5.0 percent.

So the window runs from about 4 pm to 3 am. From 6 pm to 1 am, about one birth in four has Venus in the 5th house. From 3 am to 3 pm, it almost never happens in Placidus.

The two kinds of Venus split that window. The morning star owns the late afternoon and the evening, from 4 pm to about 10 pm. The evening star owns the late night, from about 9 pm to 2 am. At 7 pm, about half of the babies with a morning-star Venus get this placement. At 11 pm, the same holds for an evening-star Venus.

In whole sign houses, the window shifts about an hour later. It runs from about 5 pm to 4 am, and it is highest from 9 pm to 1 am.

The guess I started with, and what the count changed

I started with a guess. The 5th house is the joy of a night planet, and it sits below the western skyline. Venus stays close to the Sun. So Venus in the 5th house should be a birth in the evening or early night, a few hours after sunset.

Most of that held. 75 percent of US babies with this placement were born between 6 pm and midnight. But the window is wider on both sides than the guess. It opens at 4 pm, well before sunset in summer, and it runs past midnight to 3 am. The morning star makes the early edge, and the evening star makes the late one.

The count changed a second thing. The morning star wins here: 8.01 percent against 6.91 percent in Placidus. Its window falls from 4 pm to 10 pm, when each clock hour still holds 3.7 to 4.7 percent of US births. The evening star’s window falls from 10 pm to 2 am, when each hour holds 3.2 to 3.6 percent. It is the same pattern our page on Venus in the 4th house found one room further on.

Day chart or night chart?

This is where the numbers meet the old theory. In a day chart, the Sun is above the skyline at birth. In a night chart, it is below. For the Greek astrologers, this split mattered. A night planet like Venus was thought to work best in a night chart. They called that being in sect.

So Venus in her joy, in a night chart, is Venus at her best in the old scheme: the night benefic, in her night room, on her own team’s shift. I checked how many US babies with Venus in the 5th house had the Sun below the skyline at birth.

The answer: 88.8 percent, in Placidus, with real US hours. With even hours, it is 89.9 percent. So nine times in ten, Venus in the 5th house comes with a night chart, and the old picture holds. Venus sits in her joy, on her own shift.

The other one time in nine is a day chart. In each of those births, the Sun sits in the 7th house, the room just above the western skyline, in the last hours before sunset. And in each of them, Venus is a morning star. Only a Venus that runs ahead of the Sun can set while the Sun is still up. A baby born in New York at 4 pm on January 15, 2027, is one of them.

Real hours raise that day share a little, from 10.1 to 11.2 percent. The late afternoon is a busy time in US hospitals, and midnight is quiet. Among planned C-sections, it climbs to 12.9 percent. For an astrologer, this is the detail to check first. A Venus in her joy in a night chart is the classic picture. A Venus in her joy in a day chart is in a good room, on the wrong shift.

How the kind of birth changes the count

The CDC file gives the kind of delivery, so I split the count by it.

Kind of birth in the 2024 CDC file Busiest hour Venus in the 5th, Placidus Venus in the 5th, whole sign.
C-section with no labor first, 837,903 births 8 am, with 14.2 percent of them 4.51 percent of births 4.07 percent of births.
Labor that starts on its own, vaginal birth noon, with 4.6 percent of them 7.98 percent of births 7.91 percent of births.
Labor started with drugs, vaginal birth 4 pm, with 5.7 percent of them 8.65 percent of births 8.18 percent of births.
C-section after labor had started 5 pm, with 5.2 percent of them 9.07 percent of births 8.71 percent of births.

A C-section with no labor first is a birth planned ahead. Surgery days start in the morning and end in the afternoon, and the Venus window opens at 4 pm. So among those babies, only 4.51 percent have Venus in the 5th house in Placidus. That is about one birth in twenty-two, a little over half the even rate.

Turn it around, and the gap shows up again. Planned C-sections are 23 percent of all US births. But they are only 14 percent of the US babies with Venus in the 5th house.

Two kinds of birth go the other way and land above the flat rate. Labor started with drugs gives 8.65 percent. Those births pile up from noon to the evening, and their busiest hour is 4 pm, just as the morning-star window opens. A C-section after labor had started gives 9.07 percent, the highest of the four. Those births peak at 5 pm, when doctors act on a labor that has gone on too long, and they spill into the evening.

Where the Sun sits when Venus is in the 5th

If Venus is in your 5th house, your Sun is close by. I checked where, with real US birth hours, in Placidus.

House of the Sun Share of charts with Venus in the 5th.
3rd house 8.0 percent.
4th house 26.1 percent.
5th house 24.8 percent.
6th house 30.0 percent.
7th house 11.2 percent.
Any other house none at all.

When the Sun sits in the 6th or the 7th, it set not long ago or is about to set, and Venus is further on, deeper down. That is a morning star. When the Sun sits in the 4th or the 3rd, it has passed the bottom of the sky, and Venus trails behind it. That is an evening star.

What I checked, and the limits

I checked the grid a second way. I drew 300,000 births with real hours, in two runs, and 100,000 with even hours, using a fixed-seed random number tool from a standard library, not a hand-made one. For each draw, Swiss Ephemeris gave the exact spots of Venus and the Sun and its own house walls for that minute, with no shortcuts. With real hours, that route gave 7.49 percent in Placidus and 7.16 percent in whole signs. With even hours, it gave 8.29 and 8.33 percent. The night-chart share came out at 88.5 percent with real hours and 90.3 with even hours. The margin of each draw is about a tenth of a point for the rates and a third of a point for the night share, so the two routes agree.

I also moved the date range, because a short range can fool you. Venus runs on an eight-year cycle. So I ran a second grid over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, in six large cities, with standard time and no summer time, every eleventh day. It gave 7.68 percent in Placidus with real hours. The same setup on 1940 to 2030 gave 7.68 percent too. The long window changes nothing.

That check shows one more thing. With no summer time, the real-hours figure is 7.7 percent, not 7.5. Summer time moves the clock an hour ahead of the Sun, so the Venus window lands an hour later on the clock, deeper into the quiet night. Your birth year and city set how much summer time you had.

Last, a limit worth saying out loud. The CDC hours are from 2024. Births in 1950 were not timed by surgery plans the way they are now, so the old hours were flatter. For an older reader, the true figure sits somewhere between the even-hours row and the real-hours row.

What the old books say about Venus in the 5th house

Numbers tell you who has the placement. They do not tell you what it means. For that, astrologers turn to the books.

Vettius Valens tied the 5th house to children, friendship and good deeds, and he called it Good Fortune. For the Greek authors, a benefic in a good room was a double blessing. A kind planet, in its own joy, gives its best: pleasure, gifts, love affairs that go well, and children who bring joy.

Lilly gave each room a score for how much it helps a planet. The 10th house and the 1st get five points. The 7th, 4th and 11th get four. The 5th gets three, the same as the 2nd. So in his scheme, the 5th is not a strong room. It is not near an angle, where a planet acts with force. Its gift is ease, not power. Lilly gives the 5th house children, pleasure, banquets, plays and taverns, and he names Venus as the planet who joys there.

Brennan draws the same line. The four angles, or pivots, show how strong and busy a planet is. The joys show where it is at ease. Venus in the 5th house has the ease of her joy, not the force of a pivot. Our page on Venus in the 4th house covers the pivot next door.

What modern astrologers read in it

Modern writers ask a different question. They ask what you love, and why.

Stephen Arroyo, whose books from the 1970s shaped much of US astrology, reads Venus as what you value and how you give and take love. Put that in the room of play, and love wants fun. You feel most loved when affection comes with laughter, beauty and a bit of show.

Liz Greene reads the houses as parts of the inner life. In her frame, the 5th is where the self wants to be seen and to create. Venus there makes that wish soft and warm. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, links the 5th to self-expression and to the things you do for their own sake. Demetra George, who has spent decades on the Greek sources, keeps the older reading in view: good fortune, children and pleasure.

The old view and the new one do not fight. The old one says what you are given: joy, children, love that goes well. The new one says what you reach for: love that feels like play.

Venus in the 5th house in love, play and family

Here is how astrologers turn that into a life. None of it is a forecast. It is a way to read the room.

  • Romance as play. You flirt with humor, eye contact and small, kind gestures. Courtship is half the fun, and you want it to last after the first date.
  • Love you can see. You show care with gifts, surprise plans and things you make with your hands. A love note or a song says more to you than a speech.
  • Art for the joy of it. Painting, music, dance, cooking or a hobby shared with friends. You do it because it feels good, not to earn a living.
  • Warm with children. Astrologers read this Venus as a playful, fond parent, aunt or teacher, who loves games and bright days out.
  • Taste on show. You care how things look, from your clothes to the table at a party. Beauty is a gift you give to other people.

The shadow is the flip of the same coin. You can need applause to feel loved. You can chase a new crush when the first spark fades. You can mistake a good show for a close bond. The work here is to keep the play and add depth: honest talk, quiet time, love that holds when no one is watching.

Next door: the 4th and the 6th house

The clock moves Venus from one room to the next every two hours or so. So it helps to know the rooms on each side.

Venus in the 6th house comes just before the 5th, right after Venus has set. There love goes into daily work, routine, pets and health. Venus in the 4th house comes just after, as Venus sinks to her lowest point. There love turns to home, family and roots.

Put simply, the 6th is love at work, the 5th is love at play, and the 4th is love at home. A few minutes on your birth record can move you from one to the next.

How to check your own Venus

You need three things: your birth date, your exact birth time and your birth city. The hour is the one people get wrong.

  1. Use the time on your birth record, not a family memory. Venus spends only about two hours in this room, so “some time in the evening” is not enough.
  2. Enter the clock time as written. Good chart software turns it into Sun time by itself, with the right time zone and summer time rule for your date.
  3. See which kind of Venus you have. If Venus sits at a later degree of the zodiac than the Sun, she is an evening star. If she sits earlier, she is a morning star. A birth before 9 pm points to a morning star, a birth after 11 pm to an evening star.
  4. Look at the Sun in your chart. If Venus is in the 5th house, the Sun sits between the 3rd and the 7th house. If it is in the 7th, you were born before sunset, in a day chart.
  5. Look at both house systems. If Venus is in the 5th in one and the 4th or 6th in the other, read both rooms.

Frequently asked questions

How common is Venus in the 5th house?

With birth hours spread evenly, it is one chart in twelve, or 8.3 percent. With the real hours of US births in 2024, it is 7.5 percent in Placidus houses and 7.2 percent in whole sign houses. That is about one US birth in thirteen or fourteen.

What time of day do you need to be born to have Venus in the 5th house?

In the evening or at night. In Placidus houses, it happens between about 4 pm and 3 am, clock time, and three births in four with it fall between 6 pm and midnight. With a morning-star Venus, the window runs from about 4 pm to 10 pm. With an evening-star Venus, it runs from about 9 pm to 2 am.

Is the 5th house the joy of Venus?

Yes. In the Greek joy scheme, found in Firmicus Maternus and Paulus Alexandrinus, Venus rejoices in the 5th house, the room the Greeks called Good Fortune. It is the only room where she has her joy. Jupiter has his in the 11th, right across the wheel.

Is Venus in the 5th house a night chart?

Nine times in ten, yes. With real US birth hours, 88.8 percent of the babies with Venus in the 5th house in Placidus had the Sun below the skyline at birth. The other 11.2 percent were born in the last hours of daylight, with the Sun in the 7th house and a morning-star Venus that had already set.

What does Venus in the 5th house mean in love?

In the old books, Venus is a benefic, a planet that brings good things, and the 5th house is the room of pleasure, romance and children. Astrologers read it as love that wants to play: flirting, courtship, gifts and fun shared with a partner. It is a claim about meaning, not a promise.
