Scorpio and Capricorn compatibility is one of the most searched sign pairs in the US. Most answers give a list of traits and a score. This page does something else. I counted real US births to see how many times chance puts a Scorpio with a Capricorn. I measured the angle between their Suns. I checked where Mars sits in each partner’s chart, since Mars rules Scorpio and is honored in Capricorn. And I went back to the old books to see what they claim about this pair. The short version: the pair turns up a little less than chance alone would give. The sextile the books describe is real for only about one pair in three. And one partner in four carries Mars in one of the pair’s two signs.
Start with what no one can promise
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The largest test I know of was run by David Voas, a researcher at the University of Manchester, in 2007. He took the 2001 census of England and Wales and looked at the birth dates of 10.3 million married couples. In his corrected table, no sign pair married more than chance would allow. The small excess of couples who share a sign came from errors in how the forms were filled in. The Skeptical Inquirer reported his result in March 2008.
So this page does not rate the match. It treats the pairing as a way of reading two people, a lens, not a forecast. The lens can still help. It gives two partners words for how each one works. It shows where they can talk past each other. But the stars do not decide the outcome. The two people do.
Voas’s result has one more use here. If signs do not steer who marries whom, then a Scorpio meets a Capricorn at the rate set by birth counts alone. That rate can be measured, so I measured it.
The odds that a Scorpio and a Capricorn meet in the US
A sign is not one twelfth of the year. The Sun moves faster in winter, when Earth is closest to it. So it spends about 29.4 days in Capricorn, the shortest stay of the twelve, as our Capricorn sign page shows. It spends about 29.9 days in Scorpio. US births are not flat through the year either. They peak in late summer and early fall, and they dip in winter.
I took two public files of daily US births. The first holds Social Security counts for 2000 to 2014, about 62.2 million births. The second holds counts from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, about 39.7 million births. For each day, I found the exact moment the Sun changed sign. When the change fell inside a day, I split that day’s births by the hours on each side.
| Question | Social Security file, 2000 to 2014 | Health Statistics file, 1994 to 2003 |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US births with the Sun in Scorpio. | 8.18 percent. | 8.11 percent. |
| Share of US births with the Sun in Capricorn. | 7.63 percent. | 7.60 percent. |
| Rank of Scorpio among the twelve signs. | Seventh of twelve. | Eighth of twelve. |
| Rank of Capricorn among the twelve signs. | Last of the twelve. | Last of the twelve. |
| Chance that two people drawn at random are one Scorpio and one Capricorn. | 1.25 percent, or 1 pair in 80. | 1.23 percent, or 1 pair in 81. |
If all signs were equal, the pair would turn up once in 72 draws. This one turns up once in 80. Capricorn is the reason. It has the shortest stay of the Sun, and it falls in the winter dip in births. Both push the same way. Its share of births is about 5 percent below its share of the calendar. Scorpio sits right on its fair share. Its birth share and its share of the calendar are both close to 8.2 percent.
What does 1 in 80 mean in real life? Put 80 random couples in a room. About one of them will be a Scorpio with a Capricorn, in one order or the other. That is not rare. It is a little below what chance gives the average pair of signs.
Two signs apart: the sextile, and the share of pairs that truly have it
Count along the zodiac from Scorpio. Sagittarius is one step on, then Capricorn. Two signs apart means 60 degrees on the circle. Astrologers call that angle a sextile. They read it as a friendly link, an open door that still has to be walked through.
Here is the catch. A sign is a slice 30 degrees wide. A Scorpio born on the first day of Scorpio and a Capricorn born on the last day of Capricorn have Suns about 90 degrees apart. A late Scorpio and an early Capricorn can be only about 30 degrees apart. The label says 60, but the real gap runs anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees.
Most astrologers only count an aspect when the angle is close to exact. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The leeway around the exact angle is called the orb. For a sextile, a common modern orb is 4 to 6 degrees. So I asked a plain question: for a Scorpio and a Capricorn picked at random from US births, what share of pairs have Suns within a given orb of 60 degrees?
| Orb allowed around 60 degrees | Share of Scorpio and Capricorn pairs with a true sextile |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees. | 19 percent of pairs. |
| Within 6 degrees. | 36 percent of pairs. |
| Within 8 degrees. | 47 percent of pairs. |
| Within 10 degrees. | 56 percent of pairs. |
With a 6 degree orb, about one pair in three has a real Sun sextile. Even with 8 degrees, fewer than half do. The other pairs share the label, not the angle. About one pair in eight has Suns closer than 45 degrees. About one pair in eight has them wider than 75 degrees.
These shares are close to what you get for any two signs a few steps apart. The width of a sign alone sets them. Our page on Virgo and Scorpio compatibility found the same one in three for the sextile on Scorpio’s other side.
A true sextile needs birthdays about 59 days apart
For the angle to be exact, both Suns must sit at the same degree of their signs. You might expect those birthdays to be two months apart, about 61 days. They are a bit closer. From one degree of Scorpio to the same degree of Capricorn, the Sun takes between 59.0 and 59.5 days. It speeds up as Earth nears the point of its orbit closest to the Sun, in early January.
So take a Scorpio born about November 7. The Sun then sits near 15 degrees of Scorpio. A Capricorn born about January 5 has the Sun near 15 degrees of Capricorn. That pair has the exact sextile the books describe. A Scorpio born on October 23 and a Capricorn born on January 19 sit close to 90 degrees apart. That is a square in size, not a sextile. A Scorpio born on November 21 and a Capricorn born on December 22 are only about 30 degrees apart. If you want to use the angle, look up both birth dates and find the real degrees.
What the oldest book says about this pair
The oldest full source is the Tetrabiblos, written by Ptolemy in Alexandria around 150 AD. I read it in the Robbins English version of 1940. Ptolemy sorts the signs in several ways. Here is what each one says about Scorpio and Capricorn.
Same kind, so a calm angle
Ptolemy splits the signs into masculine and feminine, one after the other around the circle. Scorpio and Capricorn are both feminine. In Book 1, chapter 13, he says the sextile and the trine are in harmony because they join signs of the same kind. The square and the opposition clash because they join signs of opposite kinds. So the easy reading of this pair is old. It rests on a rule about gender, not on a study of couples.
No other link in his lists
Ptolemy names three more ties between signs, in chapters 14 to 16. Some signs command and others obey. Each pair sits on the two sides of Aries or of Libra, at the same distance. Scorpio is paired with Virgo, and Capricorn with Cancer. So neither one commands the other. Both sit in the half of the year where nights are longer, the half he calls obeying.
Some signs behold each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. This rule has two readings. By degree, as William Lilly uses it, Scorpio mirrors Aquarius and Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius. By whole sign, as Robbins lists the pairs in his note 83, Scorpio beholds Pisces and Capricorn is left with no mate at all. Either way, Scorpio and Capricorn do not behold each other.
The last group is the strangers. Ptolemy calls signs one or five apart disjunct, with no tie at all. Two signs apart is not on that list, since the sextile is a true aspect. So the sextile is the only tie of this kind between the two signs.
A fixed sign and a cardinal one
Scorpio falls in the middle of autumn. Modern books call it a fixed sign, one that holds and keeps. Capricorn opens winter at the December solstice. Modern books call it a cardinal sign, one that starts things. Our Scorpio sign page shows why its start date moves from year to year. So one partner likes to hold a course, and the other likes to set one.
Mars and Saturn: a sextile tied by Mars
Each sign has a ruling planet. In the old scheme, Scorpio belongs to Mars, the planet of drive and desire. Capricorn belongs to Saturn, the planet of limits, time and structure. Pluto was handed Scorpio after 1930, but the old books know only Mars. Here is the rank each planet holds in the other partner’s sign.
| Planet | Its tie to Scorpio | Its tie to Capricorn |
|---|---|---|
| Mars. | Rules Scorpio as its home sign, and leads the water signs. | Is exalted in Capricorn. |
| Saturn. | Holds no rank in Scorpio. | Rules Capricorn as its home sign. |
| Venus. | Shares rule of the water signs by day. | Rules the earth signs by day. |
| The Moon. | Shares rule of the water signs by night, but is in its fall in Scorpio. | Rules the earth signs by night. |
Some terms first. A planet’s home sign is the sign it rules. Exaltation is a second place of honor, where a planet is a guest of high rank. The fall is the sign opposite the exaltation, where a planet is least at ease. The element rulers are planets that govern all three signs of one element, one by day and one by night.
Ptolemy sets all of this out in Book 1. In chapter 17, Mars gets Aries and Scorpio, and Saturn gets Capricorn and Aquarius. In chapter 18, the water signs go to Mars, with the Moon by night and Venus by day as partners. The earth signs go to Venus by day and the Moon by night. In chapter 19, Mars is exalted in Capricorn, “because in it he is farthest south.” William Lilly repeats these ranks in Christian Astrology in 1647. He places the peak of Mars’s exaltation at 28 degrees of Capricorn. Our page on Mars in Capricorn tests that claim against the sky.
So the ruler of Scorpio is honored in Capricorn. Saturn gets nothing back in Scorpio. The link runs one way. The two elements share Venus and the Moon as rulers, one by day and one by night. That is a second, softer tie.
How rare is a sextile with this kind of tie?
Take the seven planets of the old books: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Pair each home sign with the exaltation of the same planet. I did this by hand from Lilly’s table. Out of 66 possible pairs of signs, 11 are tied this way. Only three of those 11 are sextiles. Taurus and Cancer are tied through the Moon. Taurus and Pisces are tied through Venus. Scorpio and Capricorn are tied through Mars.
So this pair is one of three sextiles that the old books bind with a planet’s home and its honor. In that system, the calm angle and the shared ruler point the same way.
Where Mars sits in each partner’s chart
That tie made me ask a plain question. If Mars links the two signs, how many Scorpios and Capricorns carry Mars in one of them? Mars moves on its own path, so the answer is not fixed by the birthday. But it is not free either. Mars and the Sun move the same way for months when Mars is on the far side of the Sun. So Mars clusters in and near the Sun’s sign.
I counted over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, so that the Mars cycles average out. A short window of 60 years can move these shares by up to a point.
| Where Mars sits | Share of Scorpio Suns | Share of Capricorn Suns |
|---|---|---|
| Mars in Scorpio, its home sign. | 14.21 percent. | 12.44 percent. |
| Mars in Capricorn, its exaltation. | 10.14 percent. | 12.30 percent. |
| Mars in either of the two signs. | 24.35 percent, about 1 in 4. | 24.74 percent, about 1 in 4. |
Compare that with the sky as a whole. Mars sits in Capricorn 7.21 percent of the time over the same 800 years. For a Capricorn Sun, the share climbs to 12.30 percent, about 1.7 times as high. For a Scorpio Sun, it is 10.14 percent. So both partners carry Mars in its sign of honor more than the average person does. Both carry Mars at home in Scorpio more than the average person, too.
Pisces sits on Capricorn’s other side, and our page on Capricorn and Pisces compatibility adds Venus to the same count.
What does that give for a couple? If the two birth dates are not linked, the chance that both partners have Mars in Scorpio or Capricorn is about 6 percent. That is about 1 couple in 17. For those couples, the Mars tie is more than a line in an old table. It sits in both charts.
Most couples do not have it. Three Scorpios in four, and three Capricorns in four, carry Mars in some other sign. That sign shapes how each one pushes, wants and fights. It is worth more than the Sun sign when you read how two people handle conflict.
Where each partner’s Venus can sit
Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does. From here, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. That limit boxes in the Venus sign of each partner. Our sign pages list the five signs open to each Sun sign.
For a Scorpio Sun, Venus can only be in Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn. For a Capricorn Sun, Venus can only be in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. So the two partners can share a Venus sign in three cases: Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn. And each one can have Venus in the other’s Sun sign, though that is the rarer case, at about one chart in ten.
This is one more reason to read the full chart. The Scorpio and Capricorn Venus placements page reads the pair through the planet of affection instead of the Sun.
How the pair can play out day to day
Here the language turns from counts to tradition. What follows is how astrologers read the two signs. It is a set of images to test against your own life, not a set of facts.
What each partner brings
Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Water means feeling, memory and bonds. Fixed means it holds on. A Scorpio partner shows care through loyalty and focus. They notice what is not said. They want the truth, even when it costs.
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Earth means the concrete, the body and daily work. A Capricorn partner shows care through effort and time. They plan. They keep promises. They build something that will still stand in ten years.
Where they meet
Both signs are private. Both take a promise as a serious thing. Both prefer a long game to a quick win. In the old picture, both are feminine signs, so both work from the inside out, not by show. Scorpio brings depth to Capricorn’s plans. Capricorn brings a firm floor to Scorpio’s strong feelings. Mars, honored in Capricorn, gives the pair a shared taste for effort that is aimed and paced.
Where they rub
The two signs guard different things. Scorpio guards feelings. Capricorn guards time and standing. When Scorpio asks what is going on inside, Capricorn can hear a demand to stop working. When Capricorn goes quiet to fix a problem, Scorpio can read the silence as distance.
Control is the other sore spot. Scorpio holds on through the bond. Capricorn holds on through the plan. Neither is wrong. But each can see the other’s grip as a lack of trust.
What helps, in the words of the tradition
The sextile is read as a door that stays shut until someone opens it. The link is there, but it needs a first step from one side. In plain terms, that means a few simple habits:
- Name one feeling before you talk about the plan.
- Set a time each week to talk about the two of you, not the tasks.
- Agree on what stays private and what gets shared.
- Keep promises small and exact, so both can see them kept.
- Build something together, a home or a project, that needs both skills.
These habits are not astrology. They are what helps most couples. The signs only give a name to the pattern.
Look past the Sun
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with ten planets and twelve houses. To read two people well, astrologers compare whole charts. That method is called synastry. It looks at how each planet in one chart meets each planet in the other.
Three placements matter most for love in the traditional view. The Moon shows needs and moods. Venus shows what someone finds lovely and how they give affection. Mars shows desire and how someone pushes for what they want. For this pair, Mars carries the old link, so it deserves a close look in both charts.
If a birthday falls near a sign change, check it first. The guide to the 12 zodiac signs has the real Sun dates for each sign. The first day of Scorpio and the last day of Capricorn both shift by a day from year to year.
How I measured this
You can redo each number on this page.
For the Sun sign shares, I used two daily birth files published by FiveThirtyEight. One comes from the Social Security Administration and covers 2000 to 2014. The other comes from the National Center for Health Statistics and covers 1994 to 2003. I found each Sun sign change with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library, in the tropical zodiac. I spread each day’s births evenly over its 24 hours in Chicago time. When the Sun changed sign that day, I split the births by the hours before and after. Using New York time moves the shares by less than a hundredth of a point.
For the pair rate, I assumed partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found. The chance of one Scorpio and one Capricorn is then two times the Scorpio share times the Capricorn share.
For the sextile, I took the Sun’s position at each hour of the birth years, weighted by births. I built the spread of Scorpio Sun degrees and Capricorn Sun degrees, and combined them to get the spread of the gap. Both birth files gave the same shares. As a check, a simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives 19, 36, 46 and 56 percent, within one point of the table.
For the 59 days, I timed the Sun from each degree of Scorpio to the same degree of Capricorn, for every year from 1990 to 2030. I did it once with astronomy-engine and once with the short solar formula of Jean Meeus. Both gave the same days to within a hundredth.
For Mars, I sampled the sky every six hours from 1600 to 2400 with astronomy-engine, and noted the Sun’s sign and the Mars sign at each step. Then I checked it by a second road. I took one Mars position per day for the same 800 years from JPL Horizons, the ephemeris service of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. I found the Sun’s sign for each day with the Meeus formula. The two roads agree to within two hundredths of a point on every share in the Mars table.
For the old rules, I read Ptolemy’s Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, in the Robbins version. I checked the exaltation degrees and the mirror signs in Lilly’s tables.
Frequently asked questions
Are Scorpio and Capricorn compatible?
Astrology reads the pair as an easy angle with a real tie. The signs sit 60 degrees apart, and Ptolemy calls that angle harmonious because both signs are feminine. Mars, ruler of Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn. No study has shown that any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.
How common is a Scorpio and Capricorn couple?
In US birth data, about 1 random pair in 80 is one Scorpio and one Capricorn. Capricorn is the rarest Sun sign in US births, and Scorpio sits near the middle of the twelve.
Is every Scorpio and Capricorn pair a sextile?
By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of pairs have Suns in a real sextile. The rest range from about 30 to 90 degrees apart.
Why is Mars important for this pair?
Mars rules Scorpio in the old scheme and is exalted in Capricorn. Over 800 years, about one Scorpio in four and one Capricorn in four has Mars in Scorpio or Capricorn. For about 1 couple in 17, both partners do.
Can a Scorpio have Venus in Capricorn?
Yes. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so a Scorpio’s Venus can be in Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn. In the same way, a Capricorn can have Venus in Scorpio. Both cases are the rarer ones, at about one chart in ten.
