Two Capricorn symbols (sea-goats) mirrored over mountains, symbolizing Capricorn and Capricorn compatibility.

Capricorn and Capricorn Compatibility: The Rarest Couple of All 78

Capricorn and Capricorn compatibility gets the same pages as every other pair. Two hard workers, one shared goal, a slow and steady love. We wanted to test something you can check instead. So we asked a plain question. How likely is it that chance puts two Capricorns together at all?

The answer comes from 62 million US births. Pair two people born in the US at random, and both come out Capricorn about 1 time in 172. No other pair of signs is that rare. Out of all 78 ways to match two Sun signs, this one sits last.

This guide shows where that number comes from and why it lands at the bottom. It also covers how close two Capricorn Suns sit, the one small foothold the Sun has in this sign, and what old books say about Saturn, the ruler you both share. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The short answer, in six lines

Question What we found.
How common is a Capricorn and Capricorn couple? About 1 random US couple in 172, or 0.58 percent.
Where does it rank? Last of all 78 sign pairs, in two separate birth files.
What would an even split of signs give? 1 couple in 144, so this pair is about 16 percent short.
How many of these couples have Suns within 8 degrees? About 46 percent, just under half.
How many have both Suns in the Sun’s own part of the sign? About 12 percent, or 1 couple in 8 or 9.
What do the two share in the old books? Saturn, which rules the sign, and a cold, wintry season.

How rare is a Capricorn and Capricorn couple?

Most pages on this pair start with a score, such as 90 percent. Nobody says how the score is made, and you cannot check it. So we began with a count you can check: how many people are born under each sign.

Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. The Sun takes about a month to cross one. Capricorn season runs from about December 21 or 22 to January 19 or 20. The exact hour shifts a little each year. That is why our guide to the zodiac signs and their dates checks each date against the real sky.

We then counted births. Two US data sets gave the same result.

Source of the births Share born Capricorn Chance a random couple is two Capricorns.
US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date 7.63 percent 0.58 percent, or 1 in 172.
US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date 7.60 percent 0.58 percent, or 1 in 173.
If all twelve signs were equal 8.33 percent 0.69 percent, or 1 in 144.

The math is short. If 7.63 percent of people are Capricorn, the chance that two random people both are is 7.63 percent of 7.63 percent. That gives 0.58 percent. Turn it over and you get 1 couple in 172.

Why a same sign pair sits at the bottom

Before we read too much into the rank, one fact needs to be clear. Every same sign pair starts with a handicap. A Capricorn and Aquarius couple can form two ways. She can be the Capricorn and he the Aquarius, or the other way round. Two Capricorns can form only one way. So a same sign pair has half the chances of a mixed pair built from signs of the same size.

That is why the rare end of the list is crowded with same sign pairs. It is also why the rarest couple of two different signs, Capricorn and Aquarius compatibility, still turns up about 1 time in 83. That is about twice the rate of two Capricorns.

The fair test compares same sign pairs with each other. Here Capricorn still comes last.

Same sign couple Chance for a random US couple.
Leo and Leo, the most common About 1 in 125.
Virgo and Virgo, second About 1 in 125.
Cancer and Cancer, third About 1 in 128.
Sagittarius and Sagittarius, tenth About 1 in 158.
Aquarius and Aquarius, eleventh About 1 in 159.
Capricorn and Capricorn, the rarest About 1 in 172.

So a Leo and Leo couple is about 38 percent more common than a Capricorn and Capricorn couple. All twelve same sign pairs together make about 1 random couple in 12. That is almost exactly what an even zodiac would give. The gaps between signs cancel out when you add them up. They show only when you look at one sign.

Why so few Capricorns are born

Capricorn is the rarest Sun sign in US births, and two causes stack up. The first is in the sky. Earth passes its closest point to the Sun in early January. It moves fastest there, so the Sun crosses Capricorn in about 29.4 days. No sign gets a shorter season. Our Capricorn sign page measures that stay and explains the orbit.

The second cause is on the calendar. Christmas and New Year both fall in Capricorn season. Many births are planned, such as a set date for a C-section. Those planned births avoid holidays, when fewer staff are on duty. In our files, the six holiday dates from December 24 to January 2 hold about 17 percent of Capricorn births. They make up about 20 percent of the days.

A short season with a quiet week inside it gives the smallest sign. Square that small share, as a same sign pair does, and the gap grows. A sign that is 8 percent short of an even split turns into a pair that is 16 percent short.

Two Suns in one sign: how close are they?

Sharing a sign does not mean sharing the Sun’s exact spot. A Capricorn born on December 22 and one born on January 19 have Suns about 28 degrees apart. That is almost the full width of the sign.

Astrologers call two points close together a conjunction. They count it only when the gap is small. The allowed gap is called the orb. We placed every Capricorn birth on the sky and paired them all, weighted by births. The average gap between two Capricorn Suns is about 10 degrees, which is close to 10 days of the calendar.

Orb, the allowed gap between the two Suns Share of Capricorn couples inside it.
1 degree, close to the same birthday About 6 percent, or 1 couple in 16.
3 degrees About 19 percent, or 1 couple in 5.
6 degrees About 36 percent, or 1 couple in 3.
8 degrees, a common choice About 46 percent, just under half.
10 degrees, a wide margin About 56 percent, just over half.

The holiday dip did not change these shares in any way that counts. They match what we found for other pairs, such as the Virgo and Virgo pairing. Births spread almost evenly inside any sign, so the math comes out the same. The point for you is plain. Being two Capricorns does not mean your Suns sit together. A rule of thumb helps here. If your birthdays are 8 days apart or less, your Suns are most likely within 8 degrees.

The Sun’s one foothold in Capricorn

Old astrology gives each planet ranks in each sign. A planet can rule a sign, which means it is at home there. It can be exalted, a place of honor. It can also hold a smaller share, such as a face. A face is one third of a sign, 10 degrees wide.

The Sun holds no major rank in Capricorn. It does not rule the sign, and it is not exalted there. It has no share in the earth group either, since Ptolemy gives that group to Venus by day and the Moon by night. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, lists one small share. In his table of faces, the Sun holds the last 10 degrees of Capricorn. The two faces before it go to Jupiter and Mars.

So we asked how many Capricorns are born with the Sun in its own face. That is the stretch from about January 10 to January 19. The answer was about 34 percent in both birth files. That is a little more than one third, since the holidays thin out the first two faces. For a couple, both Suns land there about 12 percent of the time. That is about 1 Capricorn couple in 8 or 9.

A face is a minor rank. Lilly counts it as the weakest of his five kinds of rank. It is a small detail, and we give it that weight. It is still the one place in Capricorn where the Sun holds any rank at all.

Saturn, the ruler you both share

Every sign has a ruling planet. For Capricorn, it is Saturn. The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is one of the founding books of Western astrology. In Book 1, chapter 17, he explains why Saturn got this sign.

Saturn, he says, is cold and moves on the orbit farthest from the Sun and Moon. So it was given the two signs across from the homes of the Sun and Moon. Those are Capricorn and Aquarius. He adds that these signs “are cold and wintry.” So a Capricorn couple shares one ruler and one season.

That shared ruler is only a symbol. It does not mean Saturn sits in Capricorn in your charts. We measured this for our Capricorn sign page, over whole turns of Saturn. Only about 1 Capricorn in 10 has Saturn in Capricorn at birth. Most of you have Saturn in some other sign.

Saturn matters for another reason. It takes about 29 and a half years to circle the sky. Its return to its birth place is a well known marker in adult life. If you and your partner are close in age, your Saturn returns will fall close together too. A shared ruler is a neat image for that.

What else the old books put in Capricorn

Ptolemy and Lilly place other planets in this sign as well. Here is the full list, checked against the Robbins translation of the Tetrabiblos and against Lilly.

Planet Its rank in Capricorn.
Saturn Rules the sign, its home.
Mars Exalted, because Ptolemy says it is farthest south here.
Jupiter In its fall, the sign opposite its exaltation.
The Moon In its detriment, opposite its home in Cancer.
Venus and the Moon Rule the earth group by day and by night.
The Sun No major rank, only the last face.

Ptolemy also calls Capricorn a solstice sign. The Sun turns at its start and the days begin to grow. Both of you were born in the shortest days of the year, at least in the north. Our page on Cancer and Capricorn compatibility looks at what that solstice place means in Ptolemy’s other groupings.

For the pair itself, the old books are quiet. Ptolemy counts four aspects, or angles, between signs. Two planets in one sign form none of them. Later writers call that a conjunction. Hellenistic astrologers, as Chris Brennan explains in his book on that period, spoke of planets being present together. It is a bond of shared space, not of angle.

What ten million marriages show

If Capricorns sought each other out, it would show up in real marriages. In 2007, the British researcher David Voas tested this on the 2001 census of England and Wales. He had the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.

The raw census table did seem to favor same sign couples. Capricorn and Capricorn had the largest excess of all twelve, about 4,200 extra couples. The cause was the form, not the stars. Some people wrote January 1 when they did not know a birthday, and January 1 falls in Capricorn. Our Virgo and Virgo guide tells that story in full. Once Voas fixed the errors, the extra couples went away.

So the rarest pair in the birth files also looked like the most favored pair in the raw census. Both facts come from the calendar. Neither says a thing about love.

Two Capricorns, read as a lens

With the numbers set out, here is the symbolic side. Take it as a set of prompts for talk, not a verdict.

Astrologers link Capricorn with time, work and long plans. Liz Greene ties Saturn to the need to earn a place through effort. Stephen Arroyo writes that earth signs trust what they can see and touch. Robert Hand reads Saturn as the urge to build a form that lasts.

In a couple, that reading points to a few shared habits:

  • Plans made years ahead, and kept.
  • Respect shown through action more than words.
  • A home run like a small, steady firm.
  • Trust that grows slowly and then holds.
  • Humor that is dry and shows up late in the day.

Many couples with no Capricorn at all will see themselves in that list. That is the limit of any sign portrait. It fits a lot of people.

Where the friction shows up

With the same sign on both sides, snags come from too much of one thing, not from a clash. Astrologers name a few:

  • Two full calendars, and no time left for each other.
  • Feelings held back until they come out as a list of tasks.
  • Both waiting for the other to make the first soft move.
  • Rest that feels like a waste of time.
  • Money talks that turn into a board meeting.

A simple fix is to book the warm things like you book the work. A set night out. A walk with phones left home. A small gift with no reason behind it. The symbol says Capricorns keep what they schedule. Use that.

The rest of the chart counts for more

The Sun is one point in a chart of many. Your Moon sign speaks to moods and needs. Venus speaks to taste and affection. Mars speaks to drive. Two Capricorn Suns can sit on top of very different Moons.

If you want to go further, read how Capricorn and Capricorn Moon signs meet, and how Capricorn and Capricorn Venus placements work together. A full chart for each of you shows much more than the shared Sun.

How we measured

The birth counts come from the US Social Security Administration file for 2000 to 2014, with 62.2 million births by exact date. We checked them against the 1994 to 2003 file of the National Center for Health Statistics, with 39.7 million births. Both were compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. For each date, we placed the Sun with exact entry times into each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side.

The chance for a couple is the Capricorn share times itself. We made the same sum for all 78 pairs and sorted them. Capricorn and Capricorn came last in both files.

For the orbs and faces, we spread each day’s births over the day in even steps. We used 12 steps per day on the first file and 8 on the second. Each step got the Sun’s place from the exact entry times. Then we paired every Capricorn with every other Capricorn, weighted by births. Both files gave 46 percent within 8 degrees and 34 percent of births in the last face.

The census counts come from the Voas paper, “Ten million marriages,” Table 7 and his notes on date errors. The Ptolemy quotes follow the Loeb edition translated by F. E. Robbins, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19. The faces come from Lilly’s Christian Astrology. The Saturn share comes from our Capricorn sign page.

The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. People move, and many couples meet across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.

Questions people ask

Are two Capricorns compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, over ten million marriages in England and Wales, found no pull between Capricorns once form errors were removed. As a symbol, the pair shares one ruler, Saturn, and one element, earth.

How rare is a Capricorn and Capricorn couple?

About 0.58 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 172, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. It is the rarest of all 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 144.

Why are there so few Capricorns?

The Sun crosses Capricorn in about 29.4 days, the shortest stay of any sign, because Earth moves fastest in early January. Planned births also avoid the Christmas and New Year week.

Do two Capricorns have a Sun conjunction?

Only about 46 percent of Capricorn couples have Suns within 8 degrees. The average gap is about 10 degrees, close to 10 days of the calendar.

Does the Sun have any rank in Capricorn?

No major rank. In Lilly’s table, the Sun holds only the last face, the final 10 degrees. About 34 percent of Capricorns are born there, and both partners are in about 12 percent of couples.

Do I need a full chart to judge a Capricorn and Capricorn match?

For any real detail, yes. The Moon, Venus and Mars signs of both partners say more about daily life than the shared Sun sign.
