Neptune in Aquarius is the sign of the planet Neptune for almost everyone born from 29 January 1998 to 3 February 2012. In astrology it means a dream that is shared, not private: faith placed in groups, networks and the future. Close to nine in ten US babies born in those years carry it, with two short gaps that we date to the minute below.
Neptune is the slow planet of dreams, faith and blurred edges. Aquarius is the air sign of groups, friends and new ideas. This page gives the exact dates, the size of the group, what the old and new writers say, and why 2026 is a big year for these charts. Every figure comes from our own run, checked against NASA data. The method is at the end, so you can redo it.
Neptune in Aquarius dates: the six crossings
A sign change is called an ingress. It is the moment a planet crosses from one sign into the next. Aquarius starts at 300 degrees of the zodiac and ends at 330.
Neptune does not cross a line once. Each year it seems to stop and walk back for about five months. Astrologers call that backward phase retrograde. It is an effect of our view from a moving Earth. Near a border, the loop pulls the planet back over the line. So one move becomes three crossings at each end of the sign.
| Crossing | Time in UTC | Time in New York. |
|---|---|---|
| Enters Aquarius | 29 Jan 1998, 02:53 | 28 Jan, 9:53 pm. |
| Backs into Capricorn | 23 Aug 1998, 00:12 | 22 Aug, 8:12 pm. |
| Returns to Aquarius | 28 Nov 1998, 01:20 | 27 Nov, 8:20 pm. |
| Enters Pisces | 4 Apr 2011, 13:51 | 4 Apr, 9:51 am. |
| Backs into Aquarius | 5 Aug 2011, 02:53 | 4 Aug, 10:53 pm. |
| Leaves for good | 3 Feb 2012, 19:03 | 3 Feb, 2:03 pm. |
UTC is world time, the clock of the Greenwich line. Look at the New York column. Four of the six crossings fall on the evening before the UTC date. A table that lists only UTC dates gets those US evenings wrong.
Do I have Neptune in Aquarius? Check your birth date
Here is the clean rule, in US Eastern time. For other zones, use the UTC column above.
- Born before 28 January 1998, 9:53 pm: Neptune in Capricorn.
- Born from 28 January 1998 (after 9:53 pm) to 22 August 1998 (before 8:12 pm): Neptune in Aquarius.
- Born from 22 August 1998 (after 8:12 pm) to 27 November 1998 (before 8:20 pm): Neptune back in Capricorn.
- Born from 27 November 1998 (after 8:20 pm) to 4 April 2011 (before 9:51 am): Neptune in Aquarius.
- Born from 4 April 2011 (after 9:51 am) to 4 August 2011 (before 10:53 pm): Neptune in Pisces.
- Born from 4 August 2011 (after 10:53 pm) to 3 February 2012 (before 2:03 pm): Neptune in Aquarius again.
- Born after that: Neptune in Pisces.
Two gaps trip up quick tools. The first runs from late August to late November 1998. Those babies hold Neptune in the last degree of Capricorn, and our page on Neptune in Capricorn covers them. The second runs from April to August 2011. Those babies got an early taste of the next sign, which our guide to Neptune in Pisces covers.
Then there are the six crossing days. On each of them, the sign depends on the hour and the place of birth. If you were born on one of those dates, you need the time on your birth record. Nothing else settles it.
What generation has Neptune in Aquarius?
For a planet this slow, the sign is shared by tens of millions. So the useful question is how many people, and who they are.
We took the official count of US births for each year from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. Then we weighed each year by the share of its days that Neptune spent in Aquarius. We assumed births spread evenly across each year, which is close enough at this scale.
| Measure | Result. |
|---|---|
| US births from 1998 to 2012 | About 61.2 million babies. |
| Of those, born with Neptune in Aquarius | About 54.9 million, or 89.8 percent. |
| Share of 1998 babies who have it | 65.7 percent, about two in three. |
| Share of babies from 1999 to 2010 | 100 percent, every single one. |
| Share of 2011 babies who have it | 66.4 percent, about two in three. |
| Share of 2012 babies who have it | 9.2 percent, about one in eleven. |
Now match that to the usual labels. The Pew Research Center sets Gen Z at 1997 to 2012. Every US baby with Neptune in Aquarius falls inside that range. And 84.4 percent of all Gen Z babies hold this placement. So Neptune in Aquarius is close to a sky portrait of Gen Z, minus its oldest wave from 1997 and early 1998.
Neptune in Aquarius meaning
Think of your chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life. The planets are the furniture. Neptune is the piece that blurs the walls. Where it stands, you want to dissolve a limit, to merge with something larger, to believe.
Aquarius tells you what that something is. It is the sign of the group, the circle of friends, the network and the idea of a better future. So the Neptune dream here is collective. The longing is not for one perfect lover or one holy place. It is for a world where people link up as equals, and where a good idea can reach everyone.
Liz Greene, in The Astrological Neptune and the Quest for Redemption (1996), reads Neptune as the longing to return to a lost unity, a state before we were split apart. Put that longing in Aquarius and the lost unity becomes humanity as a whole. The dream is of a tribe with no outsiders.
That gives the bright side of the placement:
- A real feel for causes that reach past family and nation.
- Ease with friends met through screens, games and shared interests.
- A faith in ideas over status, and in peers over bosses.
- Comfort with mixed beliefs, borrowed from many sources at once.
And it gives the shadow, the side the placement hides from itself:
- Faith in a group that does not deserve it.
- A sense of self that melts into a crowd or a feed.
- Caring for humanity in general while missing the person next to you.
- Loss of trust when the network turns out to be just people, with all their flaws.
Read these lines with care. A trait shared by fifty million people describes a climate, not a single person. Stephen Arroyo makes this point about all the outer planets: they set the mood of a whole age group first. They only turn personal through their links to your Sun, Moon and rising sign.
Is Neptune in Aquarius a good placement?
It is neither good nor bad. The old texts have no rule for it, because they never saw Neptune.
The planet is too faint for the naked eye. Johann Galle first spotted it from Berlin on 23 September 1846, at the spot Urbain Le Verrier had worked out from its pull on Uranus. Here is the twist: on that night, Neptune stood at 25.9 degrees of Aquarius. The planet of dreams was found while it crossed this very sign.
Ptolemy, Vettius Valens and William Lilly wrote long before 1846. So there is no ancient verdict on Neptune in any sign. What the tradition does give is the frame for Aquarius itself. In the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy gives Aquarius to Saturn, the planet of limits and structure. It is a fixed sign, one that holds the middle of a season. Modern astrologers added Uranus as a second ruler after its discovery in 1781.
So Neptune in Aquarius is a soft, borderless planet in a sign built on Saturn’s rules and Uranus’s breaks. Some modern writers give Neptune a sign of strength, called an exaltation. They disagree on which sign it is, and none of the old texts can settle it. We do not use those claims here. Neptune’s one widely agreed home is Pisces, the sign next door.
The aspects that mark this generation
An aspect is a set angle between two planets, counted along the zodiac. A conjunction is 0 degrees, when two planets share the same spot. An opposition is 180 degrees, when they face each other across the sky. During Neptune’s stay in Aquarius, four links stand out.
Uranus beside Neptune, 1998 to 2003
Uranus, the planet of sudden change, was also in Aquarius when Neptune arrived. The two shared the sign for most of 1998 to early 2003. Our page on Uranus in Aquarius gives the exact dates of that overlap. On our count, about 20.6 million US babies have both planets there. That is 37.5 percent of the Neptune in Aquarius group.
The swap with Uranus, 2003 to 2011
Then the two planets traded places. Uranus moved into Pisces, the sign modern astrologers give to Neptune. Neptune stayed in Aquarius, the sign they give to Uranus. When two planets each sit in the sign of the other, astrologers call it a mutual reception. It reads like two hosts staying in each other’s homes.
| Mutual reception | From, UTC | To, UTC. |
|---|---|---|
| First stretch | 10 Mar 2003 | 15 Sep 2003. |
| Main stretch | 30 Dec 2003 | 28 May 2010. |
| Last stretch | 14 Aug 2010 | 12 Mar 2011. |
Together that is 7.5 years. Weighed by US births, it covers about 31.2 million babies, or 56.9 percent of the whole Neptune in Aquarius group. For these charts, Uranus and Neptune work as a pair. Each one points to the other.
Saturn opposite Neptune, 2006 and 2007
Saturn faced Neptune three times, from Leo across to Aquarius. The exact dates in UTC were 31 August 2006, 28 February 2007 and 25 June 2007. Neptune stood between 17.9 and 21.8 degrees of Aquarius. Saturn asks for proof and Neptune asks for faith. Babies born near those dates carry that pull between the two.
Jupiter meets Neptune, 2009
Jupiter, the planet of growth, joined Neptune three times in 2009. The exact meetings fell on 27 May, 10 July and 21 December, in UTC, between 24.3 and 26.5 degrees of Aquarius. A Jupiter and Neptune meeting comes about once every thirteen years. This one took place almost on the degree where Neptune was found in 1846.
Neptune in Aquarius in the houses
The sign tells you the flavour of the dream. The house tells you where it plays out. A house is one room of the chart, and which room holds Aquarius depends on your birth time and place.
- In the 1st house, the room of the self and the body, the dream shows on your face. Others project their hopes onto you. You can look like whatever the group wants.
- In the 7th house, partners carry the dream. The risk is falling for a friend you have idealized.
- In the 10th house, the dream shapes your career or public image.
- In the 11th house, Aquarius’s own room in the modern system, the dream lives in friends and groups.
For a full read of the planet in each room, see our guide to the planet Neptune.
Neptune in Aquarius in 2026: Pluto, Uranus and Neptune all call
Neptune is not in Aquarius in the sky today. It entered Aries for good on 26 January 2026, at 17:35 UTC, and stays there until 2039. Our page on Neptune in Aries tells that story.
But 2026 still matters a great deal for this group. A transit is the link between a planet moving in the sky now and a planet frozen in your birth chart. In 2026, three slow planets touch the early degrees of natal Neptune in Aquarius at once.
- Pluto sits on it. Pluto spends 2026 between 2.7 and 5.5 degrees of Aquarius. Most babies born from mid-February to early August 1999, mid-December 1999 to early March 2000, and mid-July 2000 to early January 2001 have natal Neptune in that band.
- Uranus forms a trine to it, an easy angle of 120 degrees. Uranus moves from 0 to 5.6 degrees of Gemini in 2026, a trip our page on Uranus in Gemini follows.
- Neptune forms a sextile to itself, a helpful angle of 60 degrees. In 2026 it moves from 0 to 4.4 degrees of Aries. That touches natal Neptune for most people born in 1998 and 1999.
Richard Tarnas, in Cosmos and Psyche (2006), reads the cycles of the slow planets alongside history. He treats them as a shared weather that a whole age group moves through at once. On that reading, those born in 1998 to 2000 face a year where their old shared dream gets tested and renewed. That is a reading, not a law. Hold it loosely.
How long Neptune stays, and when it comes back
From first entry to final exit, this visit lasted 14.01 years. Take out the two gaps and Neptune sat in Aquarius for 13.41 years, or 4,899 days. For 43.4 percent of those days it was moving backward.
Is that stay normal? We checked over ten full orbits, from the year 400 to 2037. Neptune spends 8.31 percent of its time in Aquarius. One sign in twelve would be 8.33 percent. So no sign gets a much longer turn, because Neptune’s path is close to a circle.
| Visit | First entry, UTC | Final exit, UTC | Time in the sign. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last visit | 13 Feb 1834 | 6 Dec 1848 | 13.6 years in all. |
| Our visit | 29 Jan 1998 | 3 Feb 2012 | 13.4 years in all. |
| Next visit | 21 Mar 2161 | 20 Jan 2176 | 13.7 years in all. |
So the next babies with Neptune in Aquarius arrive in March 2161. That is 149 years after the last ones. The next visit is messy at its start: Neptune crosses the Capricorn line five times in 2161 and 2162. Its last loop back lasts only 40 days.
How to read it in your own chart
Neptune in Aquarius alone says little about you. About 55 million US babies share it. Three things make it yours.
The first is the house, covered above. Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology (2017), shows that the oldest way to count houses gives each room exactly one sign. Astrologers call this whole sign houses. It is the simplest way to find which room your Neptune sits in.
The second is the aspects to your personal planets. Neptune on your Sun, Moon or rising degree matters far more than the sign. The third is the degree. Neptune moves so slowly that people born months apart can share the same degree. Your degree, not your birth year, decides which transits reach it, as the 2026 list above shows.
The method, so you can redo it
A number no one can check is worth nothing. Here is how we got ours.
Route one used the Swiss Ephemeris, the engine behind many astrology sites. We stepped through each year one day at a time in the tropical zodiac. At each sign change we split the interval in half, again and again, to the second.
Route two used NASA’s JPL Horizons service. For each crossing, we pulled Neptune’s place every minute over a six hour window, then found the exact crossing. The times in this article come from this route. For 1998 to 2012, the two routes agree to within five minutes. For 1834 and 2161, they agree to within about an hour, so we give those dates to the day only.
The aspect dates and the mutual reception came from the Swiss Ephemeris, with the same halving search. The ten orbit share is a scan every two days, with no random draw. The birth counts come from the CDC dataset of US births by year, from 1998 to 2012.
Frequently asked questions
What years was Neptune in Aquarius?
Neptune first entered Aquarius on 29 January 1998 and left for good on 3 February 2012, in UTC. It stepped back into Capricorn from 23 August to 28 November 1998. It visited Pisces from 4 April to 5 August 2011.
What generation has Neptune in Aquarius?
Gen Z, almost entirely. On our count, 89.8 percent of US babies born from 1998 to 2012 have it. Every one of them falls inside the Gen Z years of 1997 to 2012.
Is Neptune in Aquarius a good placement?
It is neither good nor bad. The old texts never saw Neptune, so they give no verdict. Modern astrologers read it as an ideal placed in groups, friends and the future. Its gift is a wide sense of belonging. Its trap is blind faith in a crowd.
When will Neptune be in Aquarius again?
Neptune enters Aquarius again on 21 March 2161 and leaves for good on 20 January 2176. The visit before ours ran from 1834 to 1848. Neptune was found during that visit, on 23 September 1846.
Where is Neptune now, in 2026?
Neptune is in Aries. It crossed in for good on 26 January 2026, at 17:35 UTC, and stays until 2039. In 2026 Pluto sits on natal Neptune for many people born in 1999 and 2000.
