If your Moon is in the 2nd house, the Moon had not yet risen when you were born. It was still under the eastern horizon, and it came up about three hours later. We timed it. Over 91 years of charts, the middle wait from birth to moonrise was 3 hours and 7 minutes in Miami and 3 hours and 11 minutes in Seattle. The 1st house Moon is the next in line to rise. The 2nd house Moon is the one after it.
That wait sets your birth hour. The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, so the clock time of a 2nd house Moon depends on the phase of the Moon on your birthday. Near a full Moon, it means an afternoon birth. Near a first quarter Moon, it means a morning birth, right in the busiest hours of a US maternity ward. So the phase changes the odds of this placement a great deal. This guide gives the times, the odds, and what the old books say about the Moon in the house of money. The method is at the end, so you can check it.
The Moon was under the eastern horizon
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house covers one part of life. The 2nd house covers what you have: money you earn, things you own, skills you can trade, and the worth you put on yourself. Our guide to 2nd house astrology, where money is the smallest part of it, sets out the whole room.
Now picture the sky turning. The point of the zodiac rising in the east at your birth is called the Ascendant, or rising sign. It opens the 1st house. The houses then run downward, under the ground. The 1st house is the strip just below the eastern horizon. The 2nd house is the strip below that. The 3rd house sits lower still, near the bottom of the sky.
Everything in the sky turns the other way. It climbs from the 3rd house to the 2nd, then to the 1st, and then it rises. So a Moon in the 2nd house is two steps from the horizon. It will pass through the 1st house first, and then it will come up. Our guide to the Moon in the 1st house covers the Moon that was next in line.
That gives this placement a plain meaning in the sky. At your birth, the Moon was out of sight, below the east. Nobody in the room could have seen it. It rose a few hours after you arrived.
How long until moonrise? We timed it in three cities
Placidus is the house system most US apps use. It cuts the sky by time. Take any point of the zodiac below the horizon. Placidus splits its climb from the bottom of the sky to the eastern horizon into three equal parts of time. The 2nd house is the middle part. Our guide to the Placidus house system shows how the cuts are made.
That climb lasts about six hours on average. The middle third runs from about four hours before rising to about two hours before. But the Moon is not a fixed point. It drifts east each hour, so it rises a little later than a fixed star would. And it can sit up to five degrees above or below the path of the Sun, which moves its real moonrise by a few minutes either way.
So we stopped guessing and timed it. We took a moment every 20 minutes, on every fifth day, from 1940 to 2030. Each time the Moon sat in the Placidus 2nd house, we found the next real moonrise over that city. Here is the wait.
| City | Middle wait to moonrise | Eight cases in ten | Shortest and longest wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami, 25.8 degrees north | 3 h 7 min | 2 h 15 min to 4 h 6 min | 1 h 34 min to 4 h 57 min. |
| New York, 40.7 degrees north | 3 h 8 min | 2 h 8 min to 4 h 25 min | 1 h 9 min to 5 h 36 min. |
| Chicago, 41.9 degrees north | 3 h 9 min | 2 h 7 min to 4 h 27 min | 1 h 7 min to 5 h 41 min. |
| Seattle, 47.6 degrees north | 3 h 11 min | 2 h 3 min to 4 h 39 min | 51 min to 6 h 3 min. |
The middle wait barely moves. It stays just over three hours from Florida to Washington State. The spread is what changes. The farther north you were born, the wider the range. In Seattle a 2nd house Moon rose as soon as 51 minutes after the birth, or as late as 6 hours after.
The reason is the tilt of the zodiac against the horizon. Far north, some signs ride high in the sky. They spend little time under the ground, so their 2nd house slice is short. Other signs ride low. They stay under the ground for a long time, so their slice is long. A Moon in Gemini or Cancer rushes through the 2nd house in Seattle. A Moon in Sagittarius or Capricorn lingers there. Across the United States, a Moon in Sagittarius lands in the Placidus 2nd house 10.1 percent of the time. A Moon in Gemini or Cancer lands there 6.6 percent of the time. Near the equator, the signs are more even, and so are the waits.
The same tilt makes the Placidus 2nd house grow and shrink in width through the day. It is always the same size as the 8th house across the chart. Our guide to the Moon in the 8th house tracks that width city by city.
Whole signs or Placidus: two answers
Whole sign houses are the oldest method on record. The whole sign rising at your birth is your 1st house. The next sign along is your whole 2nd house. So with whole signs, your Moon is in the 2nd house when your Moon sign is the sign right after your rising sign. With Aries rising, that means a Moon in Taurus. With Leo rising, a Moon in Virgo. The Greek writers used this method, and Chris Brennan sets it out in his book Hellenistic Astrology.
The two systems agree on the picture: the Moon was below the east and not yet up. They disagree on the edges. A Moon can sit in the Placidus 2nd house and the whole sign 1st or 3rd house. We give both systems where it matters, and we say which one each number uses.
Your phase sets your birth hour
The phase of the Moon is the angle between the Moon and the Sun. At new Moon, the Moon sits beside the Sun and rises with it at dawn. At full Moon, it sits across the sky from the Sun, so it rises around sunset. The quarters fall in between. Waxing means the lit part is growing, before full Moon. Waning means it is shrinking, after full Moon. Gibbous means more than half lit.
A 2nd house Moon rises about three hours after the birth. So you can work back from moonrise to the birth hour. We did it with the full count, for the whole United States, on local clock time.
| Phase at birth | When the Moon rises | Most 2nd house Moon births, US clock time |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | With the Sun, near dawn | 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. |
| Waxing crescent | Mid morning | 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. |
| First quarter | Around noon | 8 a.m. to noon. |
| Waxing gibbous | Mid afternoon | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
| Full Moon | Around sunset | 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. |
| Waning gibbous | Mid evening | 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Last quarter | Around midnight | 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. |
| Waning crescent | In the small hours | 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. |
The last column holds the middle 80 percent of cases. The spans are wide because they mix summer and winter, and summer clocks run an hour ahead of the Sun. Local clock time is the time on the birth certificate. Local sun time is where the Sun really is in the sky, and it can differ from the clock by an hour or more.
The rule is easy to use. A full Moon baby with a 2nd house Moon was born in the afternoon. A new Moon baby was born in the small hours before dawn. A first quarter baby was born in the morning. A last quarter baby was born in the evening.
The next four months in New York
Here are the Placidus windows on the day of each main phase, from October 2026 to January 2027. The times are New York clock time. EDT is summer time and EST is winter time. The last column gives the next moonrise in New York. Other US cities shift by a few minutes to an hour, so cast your own chart for a firm answer.

| January 29 | Last quarter | 8:38 p.m. to 11:03 p.m. EST | 1:46 a.m. next day. |
Look at the first quarter rows. The windows sit between about 7:30 a.m. and noon. That is the same stretch of the day when US hospitals do the most planned births. The next section counts what that does.
One chart in twelve, until you add the hospital clock
Over many years, the Moon passes through the 2nd house for about a twelfth of each day. If babies were born at the same rate every minute, one chart in twelve would have this Moon. That is 8.33 percent.
We checked this for American births. We took a moment every 10 minutes, on every third day from 1940 to 2030. For each moment we cast a chart for 303 places across the United States, weighted by how many people live there. With an even clock, the Moon was in the 2nd house in 8.33 percent of charts with Placidus, and 8.33 percent with whole signs.
Then we weighted each chart by the real hour, month and weekday of US births. The hours come from the CDC natality file 2024, which holds 3,638,436 births. The total barely moved: 8.32 percent with Placidus and 8.33 percent with whole signs. Each phase takes its turn at every hour over the years, so the busy hours and the quiet hours cancel out.
The total hides a large swing by phase. US babies are not born evenly around the clock. In the CDC natality file 2024, the US birth record for that year, the 8 a.m. hour is the busiest. Planned cesarean births peak at 8 a.m. Induced births fill the hours from noon to 5 p.m. The hours from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. are the quietest. So a phase whose 2nd house hours fall on the morning rush wins. A phase whose hours fall before dawn loses.
| Phase at birth | Chance of a 2nd house Moon, Placidus | Chance, whole sign |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | 6.1 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| Waxing crescent | 7.6 percent | 9.0 percent. |
| First quarter | 10.5 percent | 10.5 percent. |
| Waxing gibbous | 10.5 percent | 10.2 percent. |
| Full Moon | 9.6 percent | 9.2 percent. |
| Waning gibbous | 8.4 percent | 8.0 percent. |
| Last quarter | 7.4 percent | 7.1 percent. |
| Waning crescent | 6.5 percent | 6.3 percent. |
With an even clock, every row would read 8.3 percent. We checked, and it does, within 0.1 point. With real birth hours, the rows spread apart.
A baby born near a first quarter Moon has a 10.5 percent chance of a 2nd house Moon under Placidus. Its window runs from about 8 a.m. to noon, right on the peak of planned births. A baby born near a new Moon has a 6.1 percent chance. Its window falls between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., the quietest hours on the ward. That is a gap of 1.7 to one.
The whole waxing half of the month gains. The four phases from the waxing crescent to the full Moon hold half of all US births. They hold 57 percent of all 2nd house Moons. The waning half, which rises late in the evening and at night, loses the same amount.
Compare the 1st house. For a 1st house Moon, the best odds go to the waxing crescent and the first quarter. The 2nd house sits about two hours further from rising, so its best phases come one step later: the first quarter and the waxing gibbous Moon. The same morning rush favors a different phase for each house.
A room the Moon cannot see from
The Greek astrologers had a rule of sight. A house could see another house only at certain angles, the ones used for aspects. The 2nd house sits right next to the 1st. From there it cannot see the 1st house at all. The Greeks called that blind spot aversion. Our 2nd house guide explains why they also gave this room a dark name, the Gate of Hades.
So a Moon in the 2nd house is in aversion to the Ascendant. It cannot look at the house of the body and the self. In the Greek books, the Moon was a key sign of the body and of daily life. Here it sits one room away from the self and does not see it. Modern readers put this in plain words. What feeds you is right beside you, but you have to reach for it.
The Greeks gave each planet a joy, a house where it was said to be glad. The list comes from Paulus Alexandrinus and from Firmicus Maternus in his Mathesis. The Moon rejoiced in the 3rd house. So a Moon in the 2nd house is one room short of its joy. It still sits on the night side of the chart, below the horizon, where the Moon belongs in this scheme. Our guide to the Moon in the 3rd house follows this Moon one room down, toward siblings, short trips and daily talk.
The Moon and money in the old books
Vettius Valens wrote the Anthologies in the 2nd century. It is the largest Greek astrology text to survive. In his list of the twelve places, the 2nd place stands for livelihood, the means you live on.
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around the same time. In his chapter on wealth, he does not use the 2nd house. He uses the Lot of Fortune. That is a point you find by taking the distance from the Sun to the Moon and counting it out from the Ascendant. So in Ptolemy, the Moon is built into the very point he reads for money.
William Lilly wrote Christian Astrology in 1647, the first large astrology book in English. He gives the 2nd house the estate and movable goods of a person. In his question charts, the Moon always stands beside the person who asks. In charts of nations, it stands for the common people. Later writers joined the two ideas. A Moon in the 2nd house became income that comes through the public, through food, through care, or through work that serves daily needs.
Modern astrologers add the Moon’s cycle. The Moon waxes and wanes every month. Stephen Arroyo reads the Moon as the need for comfort and safety. Liz Greene and Robert Hand read the 2nd house as the values behind the spending, not the spending itself. Put together, a 2nd house Moon ties the feeling of being safe to what you hold in your hands.
Here is the line that matters most. A birth chart does not forecast a bank balance. Astrology is not a science, and no placement makes anyone rich or poor. What the tradition offers is a way to think about your own habits with money, not a promise about money.
How this Moon shows up in a life
Astrologers who work with this placement describe a few themes. None of them is a rule. Read them as questions to ask yourself.
Safety you can touch. The Moon is the part of you that needs comfort. In the 2nd house, comfort takes a form you can hold: savings, a full pantry, a well-worn coat, a home that is paid for. When those feel steady, the mood feels steady.
Money that moves with mood. The Moon changes fast, and so can the urge to spend or to save. A hard week can end in a shopping bag. A calm week can end with a bigger balance. Noticing the link is half the work.
Senses and food. The 2nd house holds the five senses in modern practice. A 2nd house Moon gets real comfort from taste, touch and smell. Cooking, gardening and handmade things suit it.
Worth that swings. The 2nd house holds self-worth too. With the Moon there, the sense of your own value can rise and fall like the tide. Demetra George, who has spent decades on the Greek sources, links the Moon to the body and what keeps it going. Here, what keeps you going is feeling valued.
A few habits help this Moon. Keep a small cash cushion, so a bad mood cannot touch the rent. Wait a day before any large purchase made on a hard day. Price your work when you feel good, not when you feel low. And name one thing you value that money cannot buy.
Your Moon sign colors all of this. A Moon in Taurus in the 2nd house is in its sign of exaltation, where the tradition says the Moon is strongest. A Moon in Scorpio is in its fall, where it is weakest. Read the sign and the house together.
How to check your own chart
You need three facts: your birth date, your birth time and your birth town. For this Moon, the time is the key. The Placidus 2nd house lasts about two hours in most of the country. A birth time that is off by an hour can move the Moon into the 1st or the 3rd house.
US birth certificates list local clock time, daylight saving time included. The sky runs on sun time, not clock time. Good chart software makes the switch for you. Enter the time as it is written on the certificate, with the town, and let the software find the time zone.
Then check the house system. Most apps offer both Placidus and whole signs. If both put your Moon in the 2nd house, the reading is firm. If only one does, read both houses and see which one sounds more like you.
A last check uses the table above. Find the phase of the Moon on your birthday. If your birth hour falls far outside the span for that phase, look again at the time or the house system.
Questions people ask about the Moon in the 2nd house
What does it mean to have the Moon in the 2nd house?
In the sky, it means the Moon was below the eastern horizon and rose about three hours after you were born. In astrology, it ties your need for comfort to money, things you own and the worth you put on yourself.
What time was I born if my Moon is in the 2nd house?
It depends on the phase of the Moon. Near a new Moon, it means the small hours before dawn. Near a first quarter, it means the morning. Near a full Moon, it means the afternoon. Near a last quarter, it means the evening.
How rare is the Moon in the 2nd house?
It is not rare. With an even clock, it is one chart in twelve. With real US birth hours from 2024, the total stays at 8.32 percent. The odds do change with the phase, from 6.1 percent near a new Moon to 10.5 percent near a first quarter Moon.
Does the Moon in the 2nd house mean I will be rich?
No. A birth chart does not forecast wealth. The tradition links the 2nd house to livelihood and goods, and the Moon to changing needs. Read it as a guide to your habits with money, not as a promise.
Can the Moon see the Ascendant from the 2nd house?
No. In Greek astrology, the 2nd house cannot see the 1st house. The name for that blind spot is aversion. The Moon rejoices one room lower, in the 3rd house.
How we measured it
We used pyswisseph, a Python version of the Swiss Ephemeris, with its built-in Moshier tables, for the Moon and the Sun. For the main count we stepped through time every 10 minutes, on every third day from 1 January 1940 to 31 December 2030, in Universal Time. A step of three days does not share a factor with the seven-day week, so every weekday gets the same weight. At each step we cast charts for 303 population centers that cover the United States, weighted by the 2020 Census.
We wrote our own house formulas. A Moon is in the Placidus 2nd house when its point on the zodiac is in the middle third of its time between the bottom of the sky and the eastern horizon. It is in the whole sign 2nd house when its sign is the sign after the rising sign. We tested our Placidus rule on 19,859 random charts against the house function of the Swiss Ephemeris. It agreed on all of them. We split the count into eight phases of 45 degrees each.
For real birth hours we used the CDC natality file 2024, from the National Center for Health Statistics. We kept the month, the day of the week and the minute of birth apart. We turned each chart’s time into local clock time, with the daylight saving rules for each year and place.
To check the count by a second route, we drew 400,000 random US charts with a fixed seed, using the house function of the Swiss Ephemeris and exact time zone rules. With an even clock we got 8.27 percent. With real hours we got 8.27 percent, with 10.6 percent near a first quarter and 6.0 percent near a new Moon. The margin of error on these draws is about 0.04 point for the total and 0.1 point for each phase, so the two routes agree.
For the moonrise times, we took a moment every 20 minutes on every fifth day from 1940 to 2030, in each city. Whenever the Moon sat in the Placidus 2nd house, we asked the Swiss Ephemeris for the next moonrise. That is when the top edge of the Moon clears the horizon, with the usual bending of light by the air.
Two limits matter. The 2024 birth hours are one year’s pattern, applied to every year. And clock time is not sun time. Your place in your time zone, and daylight saving time, can shift sun time by an hour or more, and the sky follows sun time.
Your own Moon, read in full
A phase and a clock time tell you where your Moon sat. They say nothing about its sign, its links to other planets, or the ruler of your 2nd house. Those are what turn a sky picture into a reading.
Astrovision builds that reading from your birth date, hour and town. It comes as a written guide and as a personal podcast, with each term explained in plain words. Get your complete natal chart reading.
