Here is a strange fact about the Moon in the 8th house. In Seattle, the 8th house can be as thin as 18 degrees of sky or as wide as 45. The room grows and shrinks all day long. Yet the Moon lands in it in one chart out of twelve, in Seattle, in Chicago and in Miami alike. It does not matter what hour you were born. It does not matter which house system you use.
We measured this for American births, with a method you can repeat. This guide gives the numbers first, then the reading. The counting tells you how common this Moon is. The tradition tells you what it is about.
One chart in twelve, whatever the clock says
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house covers one part of life. The 8th house covers what you share with others: joint money, debts, legacies, deep trust, and endings. Our guide to the 8th house and its role in your chart sets out the whole room.
So how many people have the Moon there? We checked every 20 minutes from January 1940 to December 2030. That is 2,393,136 moments. For each one we cast a chart for three cities and asked where the Moon sat.
| City | Whole sign houses | Placidus houses |
|---|---|---|
| Miami, 25.8 degrees north | 8.33 percent | 8.33 percent. |
| Chicago, 41.9 degrees north | 8.33 percent | 8.34 percent. |
| Seattle, 47.6 degrees north | 8.34 percent | 8.33 percent. |
One in twelve is 8.33 percent. Every cell lands on it. Our 8th house guide found the same thing another way. It drew 400,000 random charts from around the world and got 8.28 percent for the Moon. Two methods, one answer: about one person in twelve has this Moon.
Why the hour of birth does not change the odds
Babies in the United States are not born evenly across the day. The CDC natality file 2024 holds every US birth record for that year, 3,638,436 births, each with its clock time. The busiest hour was 8 a.m., with 6.3 percent of all births. The quietest was 4 a.m., with 3.0 percent. Planned births pile up on weekday mornings.
That matters a great deal for the Sun. The Sun’s house is set by the time of day, so a morning peak in births moves the Sun into some houses more than others. Our guide to the Sun in the 8th house deals with that side of things.
The Moon is different. The Moon’s place in the sky depends on its phase as well as the hour. At 8 a.m. on one day the Moon is new. Two weeks later, at the same hour, it is full and on the far side of the sky. Over many months, every phase turns up at every hour. So the Moon’s house has no link to the clock.
We tested this. We gave each ten minutes of the day the weight it has in the 2024 birth file, for each month and day of the week, then counted again. The share for the 8th house stayed between 8.32 and 8.35 percent in every city and both systems. That is noise. The birth hour matters for knowing where your own Moon sits. It does not change how common this Moon is.
Two ways to cut the sky
The whole sign system makes each house one full sign. The Placidus system cuts houses by time, so their size changes with the place and the hour.
Whole sign houses are the oldest method we have on record. The Greek writers used them, and so does Chris Brennan in his book Hellenistic Astrology. You take the sign rising in the east at your birth. That whole sign is your 1st house. Count eight signs along and you reach the 8th. Our guide to the whole sign house system walks through it step by step.
Placidus is the default on many chart websites, including Astrodienst. It takes the path of each point of the sky from the top of the sky down to the west horizon. It cuts that path into three equal slices of time. The middle slice is the 8th house.
How big the 8th house gets, and when
With whole signs, the 8th house is always 30 degrees wide. With Placidus, it breathes. We tracked its width through a full day, minute by minute, in each city.
| City | Smallest 8th house | Largest 8th house | Ratio of the two |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami | 23.7 degrees | 36.9 degrees | 1.6 to one. |
| Chicago | 20.1 degrees | 42.0 degrees | 2.1 to one. |
| Seattle | 18.3 degrees | 45.0 degrees | 2.5 to one. |
The farther north you go, the wider the swing. At the equator the room barely moves, from 27.6 to 32.6 degrees. In Anchorage it runs from 10.9 to 60.2 degrees. In Seattle the 8th house is wider than 40 degrees for about 4 hours and 10 minutes each day. It is narrower than 20 degrees for about 3 hours and 50 minutes.
The 8th house is at its widest when the rising sign is late Sagittarius or early Capricorn. It is at its narrowest when early Gemini is rising. Each of those moments comes once a day, and the clock time moves with the seasons. Here are the times for Seattle in 2025, on local clock time. Chicago and Miami differ by a few minutes.
| Date in 2025 | Widest 8th house, Seattle | Narrowest 8th house, Seattle |
|---|---|---|
| March 20 | 3:05 a.m. daylight time | 10:30 a.m. daylight time. |
| June 21 | 8:55 p.m. daylight time | 4:25 a.m. daylight time. |
| September 22 | 2:50 p.m. daylight time | 10:15 p.m. daylight time. |
| December 21 | 7:56 a.m. standard time | 3:21 p.m. standard time. |
Look at the last row. A baby born in Seattle just before 8 a.m. in late December gets the widest 8th house of the whole year. That is the same hour as the morning peak in planned births. Yet the Moon is no more likely to be there on average. The next section shows why.
Why a room that changes size still holds one Moon in twelve
Placidus measures time, not space. Take any point of the zodiac. It rises in the east, climbs to the top of the sky, then sinks to the west. The 8th house is the middle third of its trip from the top of the sky down to the west horizon. Take a point that stays up for 16 hours. It spends 8 of them on the west side, and a third of that in the 8th house. That is 2 hours and 40 minutes a day.
Points that ride high in the sky stay up longer. Points that ride low stay up for less time. In the United States, the high part of the zodiac is Gemini and Cancer. The low part is Sagittarius and Capricorn. The two halves balance. A day of 16 hours on one side of the zodiac matches a day of 8 hours on the other.
So when the room is wide, it is wide over the low signs, which pass through quickly. When it is narrow, it is narrow over the high signs, which linger. Over a full day, the 8th house covers exactly 30 degrees on average. We checked this in every city. The mean came out at 30.00 degrees each time. Since the Moon visits all signs about equally over the years, it lands in the 8th house one time in twelve.
Where your Moon’s sign changes the odds
The total is flat. The detail is not. If you already know your Moon sign, the chance that it sits in the 8th house moves a lot. It moves in different ways in the two systems.
The table below uses the United States as a whole. We weighted 25 large metro areas by the number of people who live there. Their average latitude is 36.9 degrees north.
| Moon sign | Chance of the 8th house, Placidus | Chance of the 8th house, whole sign |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.8 percent | 10.2 percent. |
| Taurus | 9.5 percent | 10.2 percent. |
| Gemini | 10.0 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| Cancer | 10.0 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Leo | 9.5 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| Virgo | 8.8 percent | 6.3 percent. |
| Libra | 7.9 percent | 5.3 percent. |
| Scorpio | 7.1 percent | 5.3 percent. |
| Sagittarius | 6.6 percent | 6.3 percent. |
| Capricorn | 6.6 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| Aquarius | 7.1 percent | 9.8 percent. |
| Pisces | 7.9 percent | 10.4 percent. |
In Placidus, a Moon in Gemini or Cancer has the best chance. Those signs ride high, stay up long, and spend more time in each of the houses above the horizon. A Moon in Sagittarius or Capricorn has the worst chance.
Whole signs work on a different rule. For your Moon to be in the 8th, a set sign must be rising. A Moon in Libra needs Pisces rising. A Moon in Aries needs Virgo rising. In the United States, Pisces rises in a hurry, in about an hour and a quarter. Virgo takes close to two and a half hours. So a Moon in Libra rarely lands in the 8th house, and a Moon in Aries lands there more.
The gap grows as you go north. In Seattle, the whole sign figure runs from 4.2 percent for a Moon in Libra or Scorpio to 11.3 percent for a Moon in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Pisces. That is close to three to one. In Miami the same range is 6.2 to 9.6 percent.
Fewer than half keep this Moon when you switch systems
We took every chart where Placidus put the Moon in the 8th house. Then we asked where whole signs put it.
| City | Still in the 8th with whole signs | Moved to the 9th | Moved to the 7th | Moved to the 10th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami | 48.7 percent | 48.7 percent | 0.5 percent | 2.1 percent. |
| Chicago | 46.2 percent | 45.5 percent | 1.7 percent | 6.6 percent. |
| Seattle | 44.7 percent | 42.2 percent | 2.6 percent | 10.5 percent. |
So less than half of these people keep an 8th house Moon when they change system. Most of the others move one door along, to the 9th. In Seattle, one in ten jumps two doors, to the 10th. The reason is simple. Whole sign houses start at the first degree of a sign, so they sit a little behind the Placidus lines. A Moon near the end of the Placidus 8th house tips into the whole sign 9th.
If an app tells you that your Moon is in the 8th house, check which system it used. Then read our guide to the Moon in the 9th house as well. For some readers, it describes the same Moon under the other system.
What the tradition says about the Moon in this room
The Moon in astrology stands for the body, for moods and for what makes you feel safe. It is the part of you that wants to be fed and held. The 8th house is the room of what is not only yours. Put the two together and you get a need for safety that runs through other people.
The Greek writers were cool about the 8th house. Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies from the 2nd century, links it with death and with the goods of the dead. The 8th house cannot see the 1st house across the chart. The Greeks called that blind spot aversion, and they counted the 8th among the weak places. The Moon does not work well from a room it cannot see out of, in their view. Claudius Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, keeps the houses dry and technical. No chart can tell you when a life will end, and no honest reader will try.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, was practical. He used the 8th house for legacies, dowries and debts. Read his way, a Moon here points to money that comes through a spouse, a parent or a death in the family. He read it as a matter of records and estates, not of moods.
Modern writers moved the room inward. Liz Greene reads the 8th house as the place where we meet what we cannot control. Stephen Arroyo writes about the Moon as the need for emotional safety. Put those two readings side by side and this Moon looks for safety in the one place where control is hard to find. Robert Hand frames the 8th house as what we go through with another person. Demetra George has spent years on the Greek sources, and she argues that the old writers were plainer than the modern books.
How this Moon shows up in a life
Here the counting stops and the reading starts. These are the themes astrologers attach to this placement. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
Feelings run deep and stay private. People with this Moon feel strongly but share with few. They want to know what is going on under the surface of a room, a deal or a friendship.
Safety comes through trust, and trust comes slowly. A small lie can break a bond that took years to build. What restores it is plain talk and time.
Shared money carries feeling. A joint account, a loan, or a family legacy can stir strong emotions. Clear written terms help, because they take the guesswork out of the shared pot.
Endings leave a mark. Moves, losses and breakups are felt in the body. Many with this Moon become the calm one when others face a crisis, because they have been there before.
Growth comes through change. The 8th house is the room of endings, and endings clear the way for what comes next. This Moon learns to let go in small, safe steps.
The Moon’s house shifts as it travels. The room before this one is the 7th, and our guide to the Moon in the seventh house covers what the Moon seeks from one partner. For a Moon that looks for joy and play, see the Moon in the fifth house. The same one in twelve rule holds there, because the Moon has no link to the clock in any house.
How to check your own chart
You need three facts: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth town. The time matters most. The rising sign moves on by about one degree every four minutes. The Moon moves about half a degree each hour.
For the Moon in the 1st house, the birth hour also follows the phase, since that Moon was about to rise.
A birth time that is off by an hour can move the lines between houses by fifteen degrees or more. That is enough to push a Moon from the 8th into the 7th or the 9th. If your time came from a family story, treat the house as a guess.
Birth certificates in the United States list the time on the local clock. That includes daylight saving time in summer. The sky follows local solar time, which is set by the Sun, not by the clock. A good chart program converts from one to the other for you. Make sure you enter the time as it is written on the certificate.
Next, check the house system. Most apps offer both Placidus and whole signs. Look at your Moon under each. If the two agree, the reading is firm. If they disagree, read both houses and see which one sounds more like you.
Questions people ask about the Moon in the 8th house
How rare is the Moon in the 8th house?
It is not rare. Our grid of 2,393,136 moments from 1940 to 2030 put it at 8.33 percent in Miami, Chicago and Seattle. That is one chart in twelve, under both Placidus and whole sign houses.
Does my birth hour make this Moon more or less likely?
No. The Moon changes phase through the month, so every phase shows up at every hour. When we gave each hour the weight it has in United States birth records from 2024, the share stayed between 8.32 and 8.35 percent. You still need your birth hour to find your own Moon’s house.
Why does my Moon change house when I switch to whole signs?
The two systems draw the lines in different places. In our count, less than half of the Placidus 8th house Moons stayed in the 8th with whole signs. Most moved to the 9th house.
Which Moon signs land in the 8th house most?
It depends on the system. With Placidus in the United States, Gemini and Cancer lead at 10.0 percent each, and Sagittarius and Capricorn trail at 6.6 percent. With whole signs, Gemini and Pisces lead at 10.4 percent, and Libra and Scorpio trail at 5.3 percent.
Is the Moon in the 8th house a bad sign?
No. The Greek writers called the 8th house a weak place because it cannot see the 1st house. Modern writers read it as a room of depth and trust. No placement sets the course of a life on its own.
How we measured it
We used pyswisseph, a Python version of the Swiss Ephemeris, with its built-in Moshier tables. We stepped through time every 20 minutes from 1 January 1940 to 31 December 2030, in Universal Time. For each step we took the Moon’s position along the zodiac and cast Placidus and whole sign houses for Miami, Chicago and Seattle. We counted a Moon as in a house when its zodiac position fell between that house’s first line and the next.
We checked the result by a second route. We used a different library, astronomy-engine, for the Moon. We wrote our own house formulas, with Placidus built from the three equal slices of time. The two routes agreed within 0.01 points on the totals, and within 0.1 points sign by sign. A third check used pure formulas with no dates at all, and it agreed as well.
We ran a longer test from 1600 to 2400, with a step of 97 minutes. The shares did not change. The house widths come from a scan of one full turn of the sky in steps of 12 seconds. The birth hour weights come from the CDC natality file 2024, read in ten-minute steps by month and day of the week.
Your own Moon, read in full
A number like one in twelve tells you how common a placement is. It says nothing about your Moon’s sign, its links to other planets, or the ruler of your 8th house. Those are what turn a count into a reading.
Astrovision builds that reading from your birth date, hour and town. It comes as a written guide and as a personal podcast, with each term explained in plain words. Get your complete natal chart reading.
