Pisces and Libra Compatibility: One US Couple in 73, Tied by Venus

Pisces and Libra sit five signs apart. They share no element and no mode. The old books even call such signs strangers. Yet one planet holds them together. Venus rules Libra, and Venus is honored in Pisces. Only two pairs of signs this far apart share a tie like that.

This guide reads the pair through that tie. It also counts real US births. If you pick two Americans at random, how likely is a Pisces and Libra couple? The answer is about one couple in 73, and we show how we got it.

One thing first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Sun signs predict how a couple will fare. What follows is a way to read two people, not a forecast of their fate.

Pisces and Libra compatibility starts with a gap

Picture the zodiac as a clock face with twelve signs on it. Libra sits at one spot. Count five signs on, and you reach Pisces. That makes an angle of 150 degrees. Astrologers call this angle a quincunx, or an inconjunct.

An angle between two signs is called an aspect. The main aspects join signs that have something in common. A trine joins signs of the same element, such as two water signs. A square joins signs of the same mode. The quincunx joins signs with nothing in common at all.

Libra is an air sign. Air stands for thought, talk and links between people. Pisces is a water sign. Water stands for feeling, mood and what flows under words. Libra is a cardinal sign, which means it starts things. Pisces is a mutable sign, which means it adapts and lets go.

So the two signs speak different home tongues. Libra weighs a choice out loud. Pisces feels its way to an answer in silence. Neither way is wrong. They just do not line up on their own.

The oldest source is blunt about it. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 16, he names signs with no tie of any kind. He calls them disjunct, or alien. Signs one or five apart fall in that group. For more on how each angle works, see our guide to aspects in astrology.

The Venus thread: at home in Libra, honored in Pisces

The old books rank each planet in each sign. These ranks are called dignities. A planet is at home in the sign it rules. That rank is called domicile. A planet can also be a guest of honor in one sign. That rank is called exaltation.

Venus has two homes: Taurus and Libra. Its sign of honor is Pisces. Ptolemy gives that rule in Book 1, chapter 19. William Lilly repeats it in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647. Lilly even pins the peak at 27 degrees of Pisces.

So Venus links these two signs from both ends. In Libra, Venus owns the house. In Pisces, Venus is the best guest in it. That is the thread most write-ups mention in one line. It is worth a closer look, because it is rare.

How rare is this kind of tie?

Take the seven planets of the old books: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. List each home sign and each sign of honor. Then pair every home with the sign of honor of the same planet. We did that by hand, from Lilly’s table.

Out of 66 possible pairs of signs, only 11 are tied this way. Six of them are friendly angles, trines and sextiles. Three are squares. Only two are quincunx pairs. One is Libra and Pisces, through Venus. The other is Sagittarius and Cancer, through Jupiter.

One of those sextiles joins Taurus and Pisces, where our page on Taurus and Pisces compatibility counts who carries Venus into the other sign.

One of the three squares joins Libra and Capricorn through Saturn, and our page on Libra and Capricorn compatibility follows that tie.

There are twelve quincunx pairs on the wheel. Two more of them share a ruling planet: Taurus and Libra share Venus, and Aries and Scorpio share Mars. The other eight share nothing. Only two join a planet’s home to its sign of honor. Pisces and Libra are one of them.

What each sign does with Venus

Venus is the planet of what we value and whom we love. The same planet shows two faces in these two signs.

In Libra, Venus is taste, fairness and balance. It wants a fair deal, a calm room and a clear yes. Liz Greene, the Jungian astrologer, links Libra to a love of the ideal. Love, for Libra, has a shape.

In Pisces, Venus is mercy and devotion. It gives without a ledger. It melts the line between self and other. Stephen Arroyo writes of the water signs as a life lived through feeling. Love, for Pisces, has no edges.

That is the paradox of the pair. They love the same planet. They do not love in the same way. One partner keeps score to be fair. The other finds a score cold. When this pair clicks, it is on shared taste: music, art, a lovely place, a kind act. When it jars, it is on how to settle what is owed.

A second tie: the same length of day

There is one more link between Pisces and Libra, and you can check it with a clock. It is a mirror in the sky.

Fold the zodiac along the line from the start of Cancer to the start of Capricorn. Those are the two points of the solstices, the longest and the shortest day. Each degree lands on a twin across the fold. Astrologers call those twins antiscia. Pisces folds onto Libra. The tenth degree of Pisces lands on the twentieth of Libra.

Lilly explains why the twins matter. When the Sun stands in either one, he writes, the days and nights are of equal length. We tested that for New York City in 2026. We timed sunrise and sunset on the dates the Sun sat at each twin degree.

Sun in Pisces, date in 2026Twin degree in Libra, date in 2026Day length in New York.
0 degrees Pisces, February 1830 degrees Libra, October 2310 h 49 min in winter, 10 h 48 min in fall.
10 degrees Pisces, February 2820 degrees Libra, October 1311 h 15 min in winter, 11 h 14 min in fall.
20 degrees Pisces, March 1010 degrees Libra, October 311 h 42 min in winter, 11 h 40 min in fall.
End of Pisces, March 20Start of Libra, September 2312 h 09 min in spring, 12 h 07 min in fall.

Each twin pair matches within two minutes. The small gap comes from how fast the Sun moves in a single day. We checked every row twice, with two separate sky programs.

So a Pisces and a Libra are born under the same share of light. The Pisces is born as days grow longer. The Libra is born as they grow shorter. Same light, opposite way. That is a neat image for this couple, and it is a fact of the sky, not a claim about love.

A word of care on sources. Read in Frank Robbins’s standard translation, Ptolemy’s list of signs with equal days, in chapter 15, pairs Pisces with Scorpio, not with Libra. He counts whole signs, not degrees. The degree-by-degree mirror comes from later writers, and Lilly uses it. The old books do not all agree, and it is fair to say so.

How common is a Pisces and Libra couple?

Here is the question no match chart answers. Say you pick two Americans at random. How likely is it that one is a Pisces and the other a Libra?

If births were spread evenly, each sign would hold one twelfth of people. The odds of this pair would be two in 144, or one in 72. The two is there because either partner can be the Pisces.

But births are not spread evenly. More US babies arrive in late summer and early fall. So we counted real births.

How we counted

Our main source is the CDC natality file for 2024. It lists 3,638,436 US births with the month, the day of the week and the minute of birth. It does not list the day of the month. So we spread each month’s births evenly over the dates that share a weekday. Then we found the Sun’s sign at each birth hour, with a blend of the four main US time zones.

Our second route used daily birth counts, with exact dates. One set covers 2000 to 2014, from the Social Security Administration. The other covers 1994 to 2003, from the CDC. For those two sets we spread each day’s births evenly over the clock.

Birth data usedShare born with the Sun in PiscesShare born with the Sun in LibraOdds of a random Pisces and Libra pair.
CDC births of 2024, 3.6 million8.08 percent8.45 percent1 couple in 73.
Social Security counts, 2000 to 2014, 62 million8.04 percent8.52 percent1 couple in 73.
CDC counts, 1994 to 2003, 40 million8.09 percent8.51 percent1 couple in 73.
Even spread, as a baseline8.33 percent8.33 percent1 couple in 72.

All three sources agree. About 8.1 percent of Americans are Pisces, and about 8.5 percent are Libra. A random pair is Pisces and Libra about 1.37 percent of the time.

Why Libra gains and Pisces loses

Pisces season fills 8.203 percent of the year, as our Pisces page shows. Pisces births come in a bit lower than that. Libra season fills 8.319 percent of the year, as our Libra page shows. Libra births come in a bit higher.

The cause is the US birth calendar. In 2024, an average September day saw about 10,300 births. An average March day saw about 9,640. Libra season catches the tail of the late-summer peak. Pisces season falls in the quiet stretch of late winter.

The two effects cancel out. So a Pisces and Libra couple is almost exactly as common as chance would give. The pair is neither rare nor special in number. What sets it apart is the Venus thread, not the head count.

One practical note. If you were born on February 18 or 19, March 20, September 22 or 23, or October 22 or 23, your sign depends on the year and the hour. Check it with our guide to the zodiac signs before you read on.

What ten million marriages showed

Do signs shape who marries whom? One sociologist tested it on a large scale. David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of over ten million married couples.

At first, same-sign couples looked a little too common. Voas traced the excess to errors in the forms. Some people wrote the same birthday for both spouses. Once he took that out, the pairs fell where chance puts them. His 2007 paper ends with a clear line: none of those couples seems to have been brought together by love signs.

Our US count points the same way. Pisces and Libra pair up at the rate chance predicts. So read this pairing as a lens on two styles. It is not a score, and it is not a verdict on your couple.

Where each partner’s Venus can sit

The Sun sign is only the first layer. For love, astrologers look next at Venus in each chart. And here the sky sets hard limits.

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. We measured the widest gap from 1600 to 2400 at 47.3 degrees. So Venus sits in the Sun’s sign or within two signs of it.

That means a Pisces has Venus in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries or Taurus. A Libra has Venus in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. The two lists never overlap. No Pisces can have Venus in Libra. No Libra can have Venus in Pisces.

So the Venus tie between these signs lives in the rule book. It can never show up as a Venus in the partner’s Sun sign. That is a clean fact, and few pages state it.

Venus at home in both charts

A Pisces can still have Venus in Pisces, its sign of honor. Just under one Pisces in four does. A Libra can have Venus in Libra, its home. Our Libra page puts that at 23.52 percent of Libra Suns, over 1600 to 2400.

We then paired the two charts at random. In about two Pisces and Libra couples in five, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In about one couple in eighteen, both do. Those are the couples where the Venus thread runs through both charts at once.

There is a flip side. Most Libras have Venus in Virgo or Scorpio, two signs where the old books rate Venus as weak. Nearly three Libras in five fall there. So the Libra partner is less likely to carry the easy Venus than the sign’s ruler would suggest.

How the two Venus signs meet

We also asked what angle joins the two Venus signs in a random Pisces and Libra couple. We used the time Venus spends in each sign for each Sun sign, from 1600 to 2400.

Angle between the two Venus signsShare of Pisces and Libra couplesAn example pair.
Quincunx, five signs apart, againAbout 37 percentVenus in Pisces with Venus in Libra.
Trine, same elementAbout 24 percentVenus in Aquarius with Venus in Libra.
Opposition, face to faceAbout 19 percentVenus in Aries with Venus in Libra.
Square, same modeAbout 14 percentVenus in Aquarius with Venus in Scorpio.
Sextile, friendly signsAbout 5 percentVenus in Aquarius with Venus in Sagittarius.
Next-door signsAbout 1 percentVenus in Capricorn with Venus in Sagittarius.

Two points stand out. First, more than a third of these couples repeat the 150-degree gap in Venus too. Second, three couples in ten get an easy trine or sextile between their Venus signs. For them, the love styles blend more smoothly than the Sun signs suggest.

Our page on Libra and Pisces Venus placements reads the case where each Venus sits in its own sign. That is the one-in-eighteen couple from above.

Reading the pair as a lens, not a verdict

With the facts in place, here is how astrologers read the dynamic. These are pictures from the tradition, not rules for your life.

Choices

Libra weighs. It lists the pros and cons and asks what is fair. Pisces senses. It knows how a choice feels before it can say why. A Libra can hear a Pisces answer as vague. A Pisces can hear a Libra answer as cold. The quincunx names that friction: two good methods that do not translate on their own.

Conflict

Neither sign enjoys a fight. Libra smooths the surface to keep the peace. Pisces slips away from the heat. Both moves can bury a problem. Astrologers read this pair as prone to things left unsaid, not to open war.

Social life

Libra is the sign of the other person, of the partner and the room full of guests. Pisces needs time alone to refill. A Libra can read that need as distance. A Pisces can feel drained by one more evening out. The pair works best, in the tradition’s reading, when each style gets its own space.

Shared ground

Here Venus earns its place. Both signs care about beauty and about kindness. Art, music, a well-set table, a gentle word: these are common ground. Modern astrologers call the quincunx an aspect of adjustment. For this pair, Venus gives them something worth adjusting for.

The Moon adds another layer, the reflex that comes before any choice. Astrologers read the Moon for that, and Libra and Pisces Moon signs works that layer for this same combination.

What the full chart changes

A Sun sign is one planet out of ten. Two charts can share Sun signs and look nothing alike.

The rising sign shows first impressions and daily style. It changes about every two hours, so it needs a birth time. The Moon shows emotional needs. Mars shows drive and desire. Venus, as we saw, has five possible signs for each partner.

So a Pisces with Venus in Aries and a Libra with Venus in Leo form a fire-sign trine in love. That couple can feel nothing like the textbook picture. Astrologers compare full charts to see this. The method is called synastry, which means setting two charts side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Are Pisces and Libra compatible?

Astrology gives no yes or no. The signs sit 150 degrees apart, with no shared element or mode. But Venus rules Libra and is honored in Pisces, a tie that only two quincunx pairs share. Read it as a lens on two styles, not a forecast.

What aspect do Pisces and Libra make?

They form a quincunx, also called an inconjunct: five signs, or 150 degrees, apart. Ptolemy called such signs disjunct, or alien, because they share no link of element, mode or main aspect.

Venus rules Libra, which is its home. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which is its sign of honor. Ptolemy gives both rules, and William Lilly places the peak at 27 degrees of Pisces.

How common is a Pisces and Libra couple?

From US birth data, about 8.1 percent of people are Pisces and 8.5 percent are Libra. Two people picked at random form a Pisces and Libra pair about once in 73 tries, close to the one in 72 of an even spread.

Can a Pisces have Venus in Libra?

No. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. A Pisces has Venus in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries or Taurus. A Libra has Venus in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius.

Does it matter who is the man and who is the woman?

Not in the chart. A Pisces man with a Libra woman and a Libra man with a Pisces woman have the same angle and the same Venus tie. What changes the reading is the rest of each chart.
