Libra Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility brings together two Moons that each live in a house of a kind planet. Libra belongs to Venus. Pisces belongs to Jupiter. In the oldest books, these two are the only planets that do good by nature. Astrologers call them the benefics.
The link between the two signs is less kind. Libra and Pisces sit five signs apart. The old books count no aspect at that distance, and they call such signs averse, turned away from each other. So this pair starts with two gentle hosts and a blind angle. This page looks at both facts, then checks the sky.
One thing first. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | Five signs, the angle modern astrologers call a quincunx. |
| Elements and modes | Air and water, cardinal and mutable. |
| Rulers | Venus for Libra, Jupiter for Pisces. |
| Moon strength | No major rank in either sign. |
| Link in Ptolemy | None by whole sign, a mirror by degree. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |
| Birth time needed? | Yes on many days, since the Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. |
A Moon sign in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you and how you care for the people you love.
To compare two Moons, you count the signs between them. Some distances form an aspect, which is a named angle with a meaning. Others form none. Our moon sign compatibility guide sets out every distance. This page stays with one of them.
Two houses of the kind planets
The Greek astronomer Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 5, he sorts the planets into two camps. Jupiter and Venus do good, he says, because they are warm and moist in the right measure. Saturn and Mars do harm, one by cold and one by dry heat.
In chapter 17, Ptolemy hands out the signs. Each planet gets one or two signs as its home. Venus gets Taurus and Libra. Jupiter gets Sagittarius and Pisces. So a Libra Moon lodges with Venus, and a Pisces Moon lodges with Jupiter.
In the old reading, a planet in another planet’s sign is a guest. It acts in the style of its host. That gives each Moon a clear flavor here.
- The Libra Moon handles feelings the way Venus would: with grace, fair terms and good manners.
- The Pisces Moon handles feelings the way Jupiter would: with wide sympathy, faith and forgiveness.
- Neither host is harsh. Of the 78 Moon pairs, only ten have a benefic as host on both sides.
Our page on the Moon in Libra looks at the first guest in detail. Our page on the Moon in Pisces covers the second.
Venus is exalted in Pisces
Here is the detail that ties the two hosts together. Ptolemy also names a sign where each planet is exalted, an honored guest with extra power. In Book 1, chapter 19, he places the exaltation of Venus in Pisces.
So the planet that hosts the Libra Moon is honored in the Pisces Moon’s sign. The reverse does not hold. Jupiter has no major rank in Libra. The sign honors Saturn instead. So the link runs one way.
Read as a symbol, the Libra Moon’s need for beauty and fairness finds a warm welcome in the Pisces Moon’s world. The Pisces Moon gains a partner whose host is at its best in Pisces. The same exaltation drives the Venus version of this match, told in Libra and Pisces Venus compatibility.
Neither Moon has a rank of its own
The Moon’s own signs lie elsewhere. Its home is Cancer and its exaltation is Taurus. Its exile is Capricorn and its fall is Scorpio. William Lilly lists all four in Christian Astrology, published in 1647.
Libra and Pisces are not on that list. Lilly calls a planet with no major rank peregrine, which means a traveler. A peregrine Moon is not weak. It simply borrows its tone from its host. That is why the hosts matter so much in this pair.
The Libra Moon: the peacemaker
Libra is an air sign, and cardinal, which means it starts things. It opens the fall season in the north. A Libra Moon calms down when things feel fair. It weighs both sides before it reacts. It shows love through kind words, shared plans and good taste.
When upset, a Libra Moon works to smooth the surface. It wants the talk to end on an even note. The risk is a feeling that gets filed away before it is fully said.
The Pisces Moon: the sponge
Pisces is a water sign, and mutable, which means it adapts and closes a season. It ends the winter. A Pisces Moon soaks up the mood of a room. It shows love through care, patience and a gift for forgiving.
When upset, a Pisces Moon drifts away from the fight. It goes quiet or finds a softer world to rest in. The risk is a need that never gets named out loud.
Why the old books see no aspect
Ptolemy counts four aspects in Book 1, chapter 13. They are the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Five signs apart is not one of them. In chapter 16, he calls signs one or five apart disjunct. The later term is aversion. The idea is simple: the two signs cannot see each other.
Modern astrologers gave this distance a name, the quincunx, or 150 degrees. Many read it as an angle that asks for small, constant changes. The two signs share nothing in the old scheme. Air and water differ. Cardinal and mutable differ. One is a day sign and the other a night sign. Of all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only air and water quincunx between a cardinal and a mutable sign.
In daily life, the symbol reads like two kind people speaking two dialects. Both want peace. The Libra Moon looks for peace in a fair deal. The Pisces Moon looks for peace in letting go. Each can miss what the other is offering.
Mirrored by degree, not by sign
Ptolemy names two quieter ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs command and obey. Others behold each other, which means they see each other as equals. There are two ways to read his lists, and they give different answers here.
Read by whole sign, the answer is no. Frank Robbins, who translated the Tetrabiblos for the Loeb series in 1940, sets out the pairs in his notes. Note 83 lists the signs that behold each other. Libra pairs with Aries, and Pisces pairs with Scorpio. Note 80 lists the signs that command and obey, and neither Libra nor Pisces is linked to the other. So by whole sign, Libra and Pisces are fully disjunct.
Read by degree, the answer is yes. When the Sun stands at a degree of Libra, the day lasts as long as when it stands at the mirror degree in Pisces. Lilly calls such mirror points antiscia. They fold the zodiac around midwinter and midsummer. A Moon at 10 degrees Libra mirrors a Moon at 20 degrees Pisces.
How many couples land on a true mirror? With a 1 degree orb, 6.56 percent of these couples do. With a 3 degree orb, 19 percent do. Across the zodiac, 24 pairs of signs are disjunct by whole sign, but only 16 are disjunct by degree. Libra and Pisces sit in the gap between the two counts. The same kind of split marks Virgo Moon and Libra Moon compatibility.
Is the quincunx exact?
A quincunx by sign is not always a quincunx by degree. A Moon at 29 degrees Libra and a Moon at 1 degree Pisces are five signs apart. Yet the real gap is 122 degrees, close to a trine. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true quincunx. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, 7.11 percent of Libra Moon and Pisces Moon couples form a trine or an opposition across the sign line instead. Check both degrees before you trust the sign alone.
The fewest new moon births of any quincunx
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Moon | 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra | 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries. |
| Pisces Moon | 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces | 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It spends less time in Pisces than in Virgo. So a Pisces Moon has fewer days to meet the Sun in its own sign, and more days to face it from across the sky.
In a couple, the gap adds up. 15.6 percent of Libra Moon and Pisces Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. That is the lowest share among the twelve quincunx pairs. 15.84 percent include at least one full moon birth.
If your Suns also fall in these signs, see our page on Pisces and Libra Sun sign compatibility.
How common is a Libra Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by frequency. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. A Libra Moon born late in the day could be a Scorpio Moon. A Pisces Moon born early could be an Aquarius Moon.
Four habits that fit the symbols
Here is how the old grid reads daily life for this pair. None of it has been tested, and a full chart can change every line.
- The Libra Moon says the hard thing plainly, instead of wrapping it in charm.
- The Pisces Moon names one need out loud, instead of hoping it is sensed.
- Both agree that a calm room is not the same as a solved problem.
- Both keep one small ritual of care each week. Both hosts reward kindness that is kept.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the benefic hosts are not a promise, and the blind angle is not a warning. They are symbols. A Libra Moon and a Pisces Moon both prize peace. The symbols point to where that shared wish helps, and to where it needs plain words.
Other pairs to compare
The Libra Moon meets another house of Venus in Taurus Moon and Libra Moon compatibility. On the Pisces side, the rulers trade places across the sky in Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Are a Libra Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as two Moons hosted by the kind planets, Venus and Jupiter, but set at a blind angle. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
What aspect do Libra and Pisces form?
They are five signs apart, which modern astrologers call a quincunx. Ptolemy counts no aspect there. He calls such signs disjunct, meaning they cannot see each other.
Do Libra and Pisces behold each other in Ptolemy?
Not by whole sign: Robbins lists Libra with Aries and Pisces with Scorpio. By degree, yes: the two signs mirror each other around midwinter, which Lilly calls antiscia.
How common is a Libra Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?
On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
