Taurus Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility starts with a strong Moon. In Taurus, the Moon is exalted, its seat of highest honor. In Pisces, it holds no rank at all. Between the two signs lies a sextile, one of the friendly angles in the old books.
There is a quieter tie, too, and it gives this page its title. Ptolemy wrote that some signs “command” and others “obey”. Read by whole signs, as his translator Frank Robbins lists them, Taurus commands Pisces. Read by degree, the two signs have no such link. Below, we set out both readings and what each one means.
First, a plain note. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read this page as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair in brief
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | Two signs, a sextile of 60 degrees. |
| Elements and modes | Earth and water; Taurus is fixed and Pisces is mutable. |
| Kind of sign | Both are night signs, like the Moon. |
| Moon strength | Exalted in Taurus, with no rank in Pisces. |
| Rulers | Venus for Taurus, Jupiter for Pisces. |
| Does one sign command the other? | By whole sign, Taurus commands Pisces; by degree, no. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |

What a Moon sign tells you
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was crossing when you were born. Astrologers use it to read your private side: how you settle, what makes you feel safe, and how you show care.
To compare two Moons, count the signs between them. Pisces is two signs before Taurus, with Aries in between. That gap is a sextile. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy counts the sextile among the harmonious angles, with the trine. Our moon sign compatibility guide explains each distance and its odds.
The Moon’s best seat meets a Moon with no title
Tradition grants each planet a set of special signs. The home is where it rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest, its best seat. Across from these sit the exile and the fall. For the Moon, the home is Cancer and the exaltation is Taurus.
So the Taurus Moon holds a place of honor. In the old reading, it is calm, loyal and slow to panic. It settles through the body: food, sleep, touch, a known room. Our page on the Moon in Taurus looks at that seat and its price.
The Pisces Moon has no rank at all. A planet with no title in a sign is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no boost and takes no damage. The Pisces Moon soaks up the mood around it and gives it back as care. Our page on the Moon in Pisces covers that sign alone.
That makes this a pair with one strong Moon and one neutral Moon. Neither partner begins from a hard seat.
Venus is honored in the Pisces Moon’s sign
Each Moon answers to the ruler of its sign. Venus rules Taurus, so the Taurus Moon hands its moods to Venus, the planet of comfort and pleasure. Jupiter rules Pisces, so the Pisces Moon hands its moods to Jupiter, the planet of faith and mercy. Modern astrologers add Neptune for Pisces.
Here is the link between the rulers. Venus is exalted in Pisces. So the planet that hosts the Taurus Moon is an honored guest in the Pisces Moon’s sign. Read as a symbol, the Taurus Moon’s need for comfort is welcome in the Pisces Moon’s world.
The link does not run back. Jupiter holds no major rank in Taurus. It has a small stretch of degrees there, called terms, but no home, exaltation, exile or fall. Our page on Taurus Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility follows Venus through both of these signs.
Earth and water at a sextile
A sextile joins two signs of friendly elements. Earth and water fit well in the old scheme. Water keeps earth alive, and earth gives water a shape. Both are night signs, which Ptolemy calls feminine. Neither Moon wants its feelings on show.
The modes bring the contrast. Taurus is fixed, so it keeps a course. Pisces is mutable, so it shifts with events. In a good week, the Taurus Moon gives the couple a steady floor, and the Pisces Moon gives it give and warmth. In a bad week, Taurus will not budge, and Pisces drifts away rather than argue.
Only two of the 78 Moon pairs match this exact type: an earth and water sextile between a fixed sign and a mutable one. The other one is Virgo with Scorpio.
Taurus commands, Pisces obeys: two readings
In the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy names signs that “command” and signs that “obey”. The idea is symmetry around the spring equinox, the point where the Sun starts Aries. Two signs at the same distance from that point, one on each side, are paired. The sign on the summer side is said to command, because its days are longer.
Where you set the mirror line changes the pairs.
| Way of reading | Where the mirror line sits | What it says about Taurus and Pisces. |
|---|---|---|
| By whole sign | Through Aries, which stays out of the scheme | Taurus commands, and Pisces obeys. |
| By degree | At the exact equinox point, 0 degrees Aries | Taurus pairs with Aquarius, and Pisces with Aries. |
The whole-sign pairs come from note 80 in Robbins’s 1940 translation. Taurus commands Pisces, Gemini commands Aquarius, Cancer commands Capricorn, Leo commands Sagittarius, and Virgo commands Scorpio. Aries and Libra stay outside the list. Taurus is one step after Aries and Pisces is one step before it, so they pair up.
By degree, a point in Taurus mirrors a point in Aquarius. A Taurus Moon and a Pisces Moon only meet in the mirror when both sit right at the Aries border: Taurus in its first degrees, Pisces in its last. With a 3 degree margin, that is about 1 couple in 200.
What does “command” mean for two Moons? The old texts give no love advice here. Read as a symbol, the Taurus Moon sets the rhythm, and the Pisces Moon follows the tune. That works while the Taurus Moon listens. It stops working when the Pisces Moon stops saying what it wants. Neither sign “beholds” the other, on either reading.
By degree, Taurus pairs with Aquarius instead, at a square. That reading is covered in Taurus Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility.
How exact is the sextile?
A sextile by sign is not always one by degree. Put a Taurus Moon at 1 degree and a Pisces Moon at 29 degrees. They are two signs apart, but the true gap is only 32 degrees. Astrologers allow some slack around the exact angle, called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true sextile. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
The Moon spends close to the same time in each degree, so these shares hold for every Moon pair. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Taurus Moon and Pisces Moon couples have an exact sextile. In about 3.6 percent, the two Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
New moons and full moons, nearly even
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. The share of each shifts a little from sign to sign. Our page on moon phase compatibility gives the exact phases.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus Moon | 8.35 percent, Sun in Taurus | 8.04 percent, Sun in Scorpio. |
| Pisces Moon | 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces | 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest across the summer signs. It spends about 31 days in Taurus, which gives the Moon more chances to join it there. It spends under 30 days in Scorpio and in Pisces.
The two Moons lean opposite ways, so they cancel out. 15.75 percent of Taurus Moon and Pisces Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. 15.69 percent include at least one full moon birth. Both shares sit near the middle of the 78 pairs.
If your Suns fall in these signs too, see our page on Taurus and Pisces Sun sign compatibility.
How common is this couple?
The Moon gives each sign almost exactly one twelfth of its time. From 1600 to 2400, the share runs from 8.331 to 8.336 percent. So two people with Moons in two different signs meet about 1 time in 72. Two Moons in the same sign meet about 1 time in 144. We do not rank Moon pairs from rare to common. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Is your Moon sign certain?
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, with a range of 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So it changes sign during 43.92 percent of days. On those days, the birth hour decides the Moon sign.
A chart with no birth time is set to noon by most free tools. Noon gives the wrong Moon sign to 10.98 percent of people, one in nine. With two such charts, 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair, one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. A Taurus Moon born early in the day could be an Aries Moon. A Pisces Moon born late could be an Aries Moon, too.
Our method
We used two routes that share no code. The first ran the Astronomy Engine library. It traced every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second. Then it summed the time in each sign. For the noon test, it set a chart at 12:00 UTC on every day.
The second route ran the Swiss Ephemeris, with its own star tables. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, half an hour off the first grid. That is more than seven million readings. Neither route used random numbers. On each Moon figure here, the routes agree within 0.04 points. We used the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research found
The biggest test of sign matches drew on the 2001 census of England and Wales. In 2007, the sociologist David Voas studied 10.3 million married couples in “Ten million marriages”. He found no sign in the Sun signs of who wed whom. A slight excess of same-sign couples came from mistakes in data entry. His work covered Sun signs. No test that large exists for Moon signs.
So the exaltation is not a prize, and the sextile is not a guarantee. They are symbols. A Taurus Moon and a Pisces Moon both want peace and closeness. The symbols show where one partner’s calm helps the other, and where the quiet one needs to speak up.
Small habits that fit the pattern
- The Taurus Moon asks what the Pisces Moon wants, instead of setting the plan alone.
- The Pisces Moon says no out loud, rather than agreeing and then drifting off.
- Both keep a shared routine, like a weekly meal, that gives the bond a fixed point.
- Both allow a little change in that routine, so the mutable partner can breathe.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Taurus Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a sextile between earth and water, a friendly angle between two night signs. The Taurus Moon is exalted. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why is the Moon strong in Taurus?
Ptolemy and later writers put the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus. An exaltation is the sign where a planet is an honored guest. In the old reading, it gives the Moon a calm, steady tone.
Does Taurus command Pisces?
By whole sign, yes. Note 80 of Robbins’s translation of Ptolemy lists Taurus as commanding Pisces. By degree, no: Taurus mirrors Aquarius across the equinox point. This page gives both readings.
How common is a Taurus Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Can I know my Moon sign without a birth time?
Only on some days. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon chart gets the Moon sign wrong for about one person in nine.
