Sagittarius Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility joins two signs that answer to the same host. In the old scheme, Jupiter rules both of them. Yet his two homes sit three signs apart, at the hard angle called a square. So this couple shares one ruler and still meets at a corner.
This page looks at that odd mix. It sets out what the old books say, what the sky data shows, and where the reading runs out.
One thing first. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | Three signs, the angle called a square. |
| Elements and modes | Fire and water, both mutable. |
| Rulers | Jupiter for both signs. |
| Moon strength | No major rank in either sign. |
| Link in Ptolemy beyond the square | None, by whole sign or by degree. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |
| Can one noon chart swap them? | No, since the two signs do not touch. |
A Moon sign in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
To compare two Moons, you count the signs between them. Some distances form an aspect, which is a named angle with a meaning. Three signs apart makes a square, or 90 degrees. Our moon sign compatibility guide sets out every distance.
One host, two houses
In the old scheme, each planet rules one or two signs. The ruled sign is called the planet’s house, or domicile. A Moon in a sign hands its moods to the ruler of that sign, the way a guest relies on the host.
The Greek astronomer Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he gives Jupiter two houses: Sagittarius and Pisces. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology of 1647, keeps the same pair. He calls Sagittarius the day house and Pisces the night house.
So both Moons in this couple answer to the same host. That is less common than it sounds. Among the 66 pairs of two different signs, only five share a ruler. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Jupiter rules this pair.
Only two of those five form a square. One is this pair. The other is Gemini and Virgo, the two houses of Mercury. Our page on Gemini Moon and Virgo Moon compatibility reads that twin. Read as a symbol, the square says the two Moons work for one boss in two very different offices.
What each house asks of Jupiter
Jupiter is the planet of growth, trust and meaning in the old books. The two houses bring out two sides of him.
| Theme | Sagittarius Moon | Pisces Moon. |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire, hot and dry | Water, cold and moist. |
| Kind of house | Jupiter’s day house | Jupiter’s night house. |
| What faith looks like | A road, a plan, a big view | A mood, a dream, a quiet trust. |
| How it calms down | By moving and talking it out | By resting and feeling it through. |
| How it shows love | Humor, candor, shared trips | Care, tact, shared silence. |
Same host, then, but not the same house rules. One Moon looks for meaning out on the road. The other looks for it in the quiet. Each can read the other as missing the point.
The Sagittarius Moon: the scout
Sagittarius is a fire sign, and mutable, which means it adapts and closes a season. It ends the fall in the north. A Moon here gets restless when life shrinks. It wants room, news and a reason to go.
When upset, this Moon says so, fast and plain. Then it wants to move on. It can mistake a hard talk for a closed case. Our page on the Moon in Sagittarius covers the sign in depth.
The Pisces Moon: the sponge
Pisces is a water sign, and also mutable. It ends the winter in the north, just before the zodiac starts again. A Moon here picks up the mood of a room. It feels first and finds words later, if at all.
When upset, this Moon goes soft and far away. It wants to be understood without having to explain. It can mistake a blunt word for a cold heart. Our page on the Moon in Pisces covers that sign.
Neither sign ranks the Moon
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The Moon is at home in Cancer and exalted, or honored, in Taurus. It is in exile in Capricorn and in its fall in Scorpio. Neither Sagittarius nor Pisces is on that list.
So both Moons are what Lilly calls peregrine, a word for a traveler with no major rank. Neither has a bonus, and neither has a burden. That makes this a pair of equals, at least on paper.
There is one small twist. Lilly also splits each sign into three faces of ten degrees. In Sagittarius, the faces go to Mercury, the Moon and Saturn. So a Moon between 10 and 20 degrees of the Archer stands in its own face. Lilly scores a face as the weakest dignity, worth one point. In Pisces, the faces go to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, so no such bonus exists there.
A square in Ptolemy’s terms
Ptolemy counts four aspects in Book 1, chapter 13: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. His reason is simple. A square joins a masculine sign to a feminine one. Here, the Archer is a masculine, or day, sign. Pisces is a feminine, or night, sign.
In chapter 11, Ptolemy also names four double-bodied signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Modern astrologers call them mutable. Each one closes a season and hands over to the next. Every square between two of them joins two season-enders. For the other Jupiter sign in that group, see Gemini Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility.
Ptolemy names two quieter ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs command and obey. Others behold each other as equals. This pair has neither, on either reading.
- By whole sign, Frank Robbins sets out the lists in notes 80 and 83 of his 1940 Loeb translation. Leo commands the Archer, and Taurus commands Pisces. The Archer beholds Aquarius, and Pisces beholds Scorpio. These two are not paired.
- By degree, Lilly reads the ties as mirror points, called antiscia. The Archer mirrors Capricorn and Cancer. Pisces mirrors Libra and Aries. Again, no link.
The square itself is the only classical bond. Since it is a real aspect, the two signs can see each other. They are not among the 24 pairs Ptolemy calls disjunct, or turned away.
How exact is the square?
Two Moons in these signs form a square by sign. But the real angle in degrees can be far from 90. A Moon at 1 degree of the Archer and a Moon at 29 degrees of Pisces are 118 degrees apart. That is closer to a trine than to a square.
An orb is the slack astrologers allow around an exact angle. The table shows how many couples have a true square at each orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true square. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46.22 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 55.56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, 7.11 percent of these couples form a different angle across the sign line. A late Archer Moon and an early Pisces Moon can make a sextile, near 60 degrees. An early Archer Moon and a late Pisces Moon can make a trine, near 120 degrees. Check both degrees before you trust the signs alone.
Fewer new moons, more full moons
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Sagittarius Moon | 7.96 percent, Sun in the Archer | 8.44 percent, Sun in Gemini. |
| Pisces Moon | 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces | 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo. |
If the Sun moved at an even pace, each value would be close to 8.33 percent. But the Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It crosses the Archer quickly, so an Archer Moon meets the Sun there less. It crosses Gemini slowly, so an Archer Moon faces it from across the sky more. The Pisces Moon sits closer to the middle.
In a couple, the lean adds up. 15.39 percent of these couples include at least one new moon birth. 16.06 percent include at least one full moon birth.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and it changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent.
Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. For this pair, the error cannot swap one sign for the other, because the two signs do not touch. But an Archer Moon born near a sign change could really be a Scorpio or a Capricorn Moon. A Pisces Moon could really be an Aquarius or an Aries Moon. If you do not know your birth times, check them before you read too much into the square.
How common is this couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Four habits that fit the symbols
Here is how the old grid reads daily life for this pair. None of it has been tested, and a full chart can change every line.
- The Archer Moon asks one more question before it offers a fix.
- The Pisces Moon names the hurt out loud, even in a few plain words.
- Both agree that a trip alone is not a way out, and that a quiet night is not a sulk.
- Both keep one shared plan with a bit of both houses: a place to go and a slow evening once you get there.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the square is not a warning, and the shared ruler is not a promise. They are symbols. One Moon seeks meaning on the road and one seeks it in the quiet. The symbols point to where that gap helps, and to where it needs words.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Sagittarius Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as two houses of Jupiter set at a square: fire and water, both mutable. Neither Moon has a major rank. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future.
What aspect do Sagittarius and Pisces form?
They are three signs apart, which makes a square, or 90 degrees. Ptolemy lists the square among his four aspects and calls it disharmonious.
Why does Jupiter matter for this pair?
Jupiter rules both signs in the old scheme, so both Moons answer to the same planet. Only one other square shares a ruler: Gemini and Virgo, under Mercury.
How common is a Sagittarius Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?
On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days, and a noon guess gives the wrong Moon pair to about one couple in five.
