Sagittarius Moon and Capricorn Moon Compatibility: Jupiter’s Sign Next to Jupiter’s Fall

Sagittarius Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility joins two signs that sit side by side. Between them runs the winter solstice, the longest night of the year in the north. On one side is Jupiter’s sign. On the other is the sign where Jupiter falls.

The two Moons start from different seats too. In Sagittarius, the Moon has no rank. In Capricorn, it is in exile, one of its two hardest places. This page follows both threads. It also shows how Ptolemy’s old rules split this pair in two: turned away by whole sign, yet mirrored by degree.

A plain word first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will fare. Take what follows as a way of looking, not as a forecast.

Sagittarius and Capricorn Moons at a glance

Question Short answer.
Distance between the signs One sign, a semi-sextile of 30 degrees.
Elements and modes Fire and mutable, earth and cardinal.
Kind of sign A day sign next to a night sign.
Moon strength No rank in Sagittarius, in exile in Capricorn.
Rulers Jupiter for Sagittarius, Saturn for Capricorn.
Ptolemy by whole sign Turned away, with no link.
Ptolemy by degree Mirrored across the solstice point.
How common is the pair? About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs.

What a Moon sign tells you

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It shows what soothes you, what scares you, and how you care for people.

Two Moons are compared by counting the signs between them. Sagittarius and Capricorn are one sign apart. That gap is called a semi-sextile, and the old list of angles leaves it out. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance, from the same sign to the opposite one.

Jupiter’s sign next to Jupiter’s fall

Each Moon answers to the ruler of its sign. Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Saturn rules Capricorn. Modern astrologers keep the same two rulers.

Jupiter is the planet of faith, growth and good luck. Saturn is the planet of limits, time and duty. The old books call Jupiter the greater benefic and Saturn the greater malefic. They sit at two ends of a scale.

Here is the twist in this pair. Every planet has a sign where it is honored, its exaltation, and a sign across from it, its fall. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. So Jupiter falls in Capricorn. The host of the Sagittarius Moon is in its weakest seat in the Capricorn Moon’s sign.

Read as a symbol, the hope of the Sagittarius Moon meets a cold room in Capricorn. Big plans get asked for proof. The link does not run the other way in full. Saturn has no major rank in Sagittarius. It owns only a small span of degrees there, called terms.

So one host is humbled in the other’s sign, and the other host is simply a visitor. The Capricorn side sets the terms of the meeting.

A traveling Moon and an exiled one

Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is the sign it rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits across from the home, and the fall sits across from the exaltation. The Moon’s home is Cancer, and its exaltation is Taurus.

Capricorn sits across from Cancer. So the Moon in Capricorn is in exile. Think of a person far from home who keeps a strict routine to feel safe. The Capricorn Moon feels a great deal, but it shows care through work, time and duty. Our page on the Moon in Capricorn looks at this exile closely.

Sagittarius holds none of the four for the Moon. A planet with no major rank is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no help and no harm. The Sagittarius Moon settles by moving: a road trip, a new idea, a long talk. Our page on the Moon in Sagittarius covers that seat alone.

So one partner starts from a neutral seat, and the other from a hard one. The Moon steps down one level as it crosses the solstice.

Fire and earth, change and start

Fire is the element of heat and spirit. Earth is the element of form and use. In the old scheme, fire and earth do not blend well. Fire wants to rise, and earth wants to hold.

The modes pull in two ways too. Sagittarius is mutable: it closes a season and adapts. Capricorn is cardinal: it opens a season and starts things. The Sagittarius Moon ends the year with a wide view. The Capricorn Moon opens the new one with a plan.

No other pair of the 78 mixes a fire sign and an earth sign, a mutable mode and a cardinal one, one sign apart. In a good week, the mix works. Sagittarius brings the why, and Capricorn brings the how. In a hard week, Sagittarius feels fenced in, and Capricorn feels let down.

Turned away by whole sign, mirrored by degree

In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy says that signs one apart, or five apart, are “disjunct”. They form no angle, so they cannot see each other. Some later writers call this aversion. But Ptolemy also names signs that “behold” each other through a mirror line. Here the two rules pull in different ways. The answer turns on how you read him.

Way of reading Where the mirror line sits What it says about this pair.
By whole sign Through the middle of Capricorn, which is left alone No link: the pair stays disjunct.
By degree At 0 degrees Capricorn, the solstice point Each Sagittarius degree has its mirror in Capricorn.

The whole-sign list comes from the notes of Frank Robbins, in his 1940 translation. His note 83 gives five pairs that behold each other: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, Aquarius and Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn have no partner. So, by whole sign, this pair is one of 24 disjunct pairs with no tie at all. His note 80 adds a list of signs that “command” others. Cancer commands Capricorn there, and Leo commands Sagittarius. Neither links this pair.

The degree reading is the one William Lilly used in Christian Astrology. He called these mirror points antiscia. A point at 10 degrees Sagittarius has its mirror at 20 degrees Capricorn. The two points sit the same distance from the solstice, one on each side. When the Sun stands on either point, the day has the same length.

By degree, a Sagittarius Moon and a Capricorn Moon meet in the mirror when their degrees add up to about 30. With a margin of 3 degrees, that happens in 19 percent of couples, about one in five. With a margin of 1 degree, it happens in 6.56 percent. Read by degree, 16 pairs stay disjunct, and this pair is not one of them.

So which reading is right? Both have a long history, and this page does not pick one. By whole sign, the pair is cut off. By degree, about one couple in five shares a mirror across the longest night.

Is there a real angle at all?

A semi-sextile by sign is not always 30 degrees in fact. Take a Sagittarius Moon at 1 degree and a Capricorn Moon at 29 degrees. They are one sign apart, but the true gap is 58 degrees. That is close to a sextile, a friendly angle. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb.

Orb allowed Share of couples with a true semi-sextile.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.

These shares are the same for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, 7.11 percent of these couples form a sextile across the sign line instead.

Few new moons, many full moons

A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon across from the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.

Moon sign New moon births, Sun in the same sign Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign.
Sagittarius Moon 7.96 percent, Sun in Sagittarius 8.44 percent, Sun in Gemini.
Capricorn Moon 7.94 percent, Sun in Capricorn 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer.

The cause is the speed of the Sun. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January. So the Sun moves fastest through Sagittarius and Capricorn. That leaves fewer days for the Moon to join it there. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. So the Sun crawls through Gemini and Cancer, and the Moon has more days to face it. The Capricorn Moon has the lowest new moon share of all twelve signs, and the highest full moon share.

In a couple, the two leans add up. Only 15.27 percent of these couples include a new moon birth. That is the lowest of the twelve semi-sextile pairs, and 77th of all 78. On the other side, 16.2 percent include a full moon birth, 2nd of 78.

How common is the pair?

The Moon gives each sign almost the same share of its time. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs turns up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair turns up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps are smaller than the error of our method.

Be sure of both Moons

The Moon is quick. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So the Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. On those days, only the birth time decides the Moon sign.

Many free charts use noon when the birth time is missing. That guess names the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. For a couple, two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair 20.75 percent of the time, about one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone.

This pair has a special trap. The two signs touch. A noon chart that says Sagittarius could hide a Capricorn Moon for someone born late in the day. A noon chart that says Capricorn could hide a Sagittarius Moon for someone born early. Some couples who read this page are, in fact, two Moons in one sign.

How we got these numbers

Every figure here comes from two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time the Moon and the Sun changed sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second. It then added up the hours. The noon test used a chart cast at 12:00 UTC each day.

The second method used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of star tables. It checked the Moon’s sign once an hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid offset by half an hour. That gives more than seven million checks. No random draws were used. The two methods agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure here. All values use the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.

What the evidence says

The largest test of star-sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas studied 10.3 million married couples in a 2007 paper, “Ten million marriages”. Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small excess of couples sharing a sign traced back to errors in the data. His test covered Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.

So the exile is not a warning, and the mirror is not a promise. They are symbols. A Sagittarius Moon and a Capricorn Moon both care about the long run. One looks at the horizon, and the other at the path. The symbols show where that pairing helps, and where it needs patience.

Habits that fit the pattern

These follow the symbols. They are not rules.

  • The Sagittarius Moon turns one big idea into one dated step.
  • The Capricorn Moon says what it feels, not only what needs doing.
  • Both set one day a month for fun with no goal attached.
  • Both treat a “not yet” from Capricorn as a timing question, not a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Are a Sagittarius Moon and a Capricorn Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as neighbors with no classic angle. One Moon has no rank, and the other is in exile. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat this as a lens.

Why is the Moon weak in Capricorn?

Capricorn sits across from Cancer, the Moon’s home. The sign opposite a home is an exile. In the old reading, an exiled Moon shows care through duty more than through words.

Do Sagittarius and Capricorn behold each other in Ptolemy?

By whole sign, no: Robbins’s note 83 leaves Capricorn without a partner. By degree, as Lilly read it, yes: each Sagittarius degree mirrors a Capricorn degree across the solstice point.

How common is a Sagittarius Moon and Capricorn Moon couple?

About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.

Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?

On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. For this pair, a noon chart can even swap one sign for the other.
