Libra Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility joins two next-door signs. The step between them is small in the sky and large in the old books. In Libra, the Moon has no major rank. One sign later, in Scorpio, it is in its fall, the weakest of its four special places.
So this pair puts a neutral Moon beside a fallen one. The Moon covers the step in about two and a half days. Two people born a few hours apart can land on either side of the line.
Ptolemy adds a twist. He says signs one step apart cannot see each other at all. This page reads the pair piece by piece, with numbers where they help. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |

| Elements and modes | Air and water, cardinal and fixed. |
| Rulers | Venus for Libra, Mars for Scorpio. |
| Moon strength | No major rank in Libra, in its fall in Scorpio. |
| Ptolemy’s reading | Disjunct, on either reading of his list. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |

What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Libra and Scorpio sit side by side. The angle between them is 30 degrees, a semi-sextile. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
From a plain guest to a fallen Moon
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
For the Moon, the home is Cancer and the exaltation is Taurus. Ptolemy puts the fall in Scorpio, across from Taurus. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, marks the exaltation at 3 degrees of Taurus. So in his scheme, the exact point of the fall is 3 degrees of Scorpio.
Libra is none of the four. The Moon there is a plain guest, neither helped nor hurt. Lilly gives it only a minor rank, called a face, in the first ten degrees of Libra.
So one partner starts from a neutral seat, and the other from a hard one. A fall is not a verdict on a person. It means the Moon works harder to feel at ease and to be seen. Our page on the Moon in Scorpio explains the fall in detail. Our page on the Moon in Libra covers the sign next door.
A few hours can decide the sign
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, a little over half a degree an hour. A Moon at 29 degrees of Libra and a Moon at 1 degree of Scorpio are only 2 degrees apart. On the same pass, those two births are about four hours apart.
That makes this pair a close call in many charts. The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A Libra Moon born late in the day could be a Scorpio Moon. A Scorpio Moon born early could be a Libra Moon.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. If either of you was born on a day the Moon left Libra, check the hour before you read on.
Signs that cannot see each other
In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists the angles that link two signs. They are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. The semi-sextile is not on his list. He calls signs one step apart “disjunct”, which means cut off. Later astrologers call this aversion: the two signs turn away from each other. The same holds for signs five steps apart.
Ptolemy does name two quieter links that can bridge a gap. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. There are two ways to read his list.
- By degree, as Lilly read it, signs behold each other when they mirror across the solstice points. They command and obey when they mirror across the equinox points. Libra and Scorpio mirror neither way. On this reading, 16 of the 24 pairs one or five steps apart stay disjunct.
- By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), none of the 24 pairs one or five steps apart has a link. Aries and Libra stand outside the command scheme. So all 24 are disjunct.
Libra and Scorpio are disjunct on both readings. The old texts give this pair no classical bond at all. Read as a symbol, the two Moons do not read each other by instinct. Each has to say what it feels.
Is the semi-sextile exact?
A semi-sextile by sign is not always 30 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Libra and a Moon at 29 degrees of Scorpio are one sign apart. Yet the real gap is 58 degrees, close to a sextile. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true semi-sextile. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. Across the sign line, two other angles appear. With an 8 degree orb, about 3.6 percent of couples have a sextile instead. Another 3.6 percent have the two Moons joined within 8 degrees, a conjunction that straddles the border. For those couples, the Moons are as close as two Moons in one sign.
Venus and Mars, each exiled in the other’s sign
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Venus rules Libra and Mars rules Scorpio. These two are the old pair of lovers in myth. Venus stands for harmony and pleasure. Mars stands for drive and defense.
Each host is in exile in the other’s sign. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so she is in exile in Scorpio and Aries. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, so he is in exile in Libra and Taurus. Lilly lists all four. So the Libra Moon’s host would feel out of place in the Scorpio Moon’s world, and the reverse.
Read as a symbol, that shows where the two styles part. The Libra Moon keeps the peace and wants the tone to stay kind. The Scorpio Moon wants the truth, even when it stings. Under stress, Libra smooths things over and Scorpio digs in.
What each partner brings
Libra is air, the element of talk and links between people. It is cardinal, so it opens a season: the northern autumn. A Libra Moon calms down by restoring balance. It shows love through fair terms, kind words, and time together.
Scorpio is water, the element of feeling and bonds. It is fixed, so it holds a season steady. A Scorpio Moon feels in depth and shows little. It gives trust slowly. It shows love through loyalty and close attention.
The pair works best when each lends the other its gift. The Libra Moon gives the Scorpio Moon a calm, fair room to open up. The Scorpio Moon gives the Libra Moon depth and a bond that does not waver.
- The Libra Moon says a hard thing plainly, instead of keeping the peace.
- The Scorpio Moon asks a direct question, instead of testing.
- Both agree that tact is not hiding and that depth is not a demand.
- Both set one private ritual each week, with no guests and no agenda.
New moon and full moon births
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Moon | 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra | 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries. |
| Scorpio Moon | 8.06 percent, Sun in Scorpio | 8.33 percent, Sun in Taurus. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It crosses Libra and Aries at close to its average pace, so the Libra Moon stays level. It crosses Scorpio a little faster and Taurus a little slower. So the Scorpio Moon leans toward full moon births.
In a couple, 15.59 percent include at least one new moon birth. That puts the pair 57th of the 78. And 15.85 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 23rd. The lean comes from the Scorpio side alone.
How common is a Libra Moon and Scorpio Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the fall and the aversion are not warnings. They are symbols. A Libra Moon and a Scorpio Moon want the same thing, a bond that feels safe. The symbols point to where they reach it by different roads, and where each needs to say what the other cannot guess.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Libra Moon and a Scorpio Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as neighbors joined by a semi-sextile, an angle Ptolemy left off his list. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why is the Moon in its fall in Scorpio?
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, and the fall is the sign opposite the exaltation. That sign is Scorpio. In Libra, next door, the Moon has no major rank.
What does disjunct mean for this pair?
Ptolemy calls signs one step apart disjunct, or in aversion. Libra and Scorpio have no mirror link by degree and no link by whole signs, so they stay disjunct on both readings.
How common is a Libra Moon and Scorpio Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Could I be a Libra Moon instead of a Scorpio Moon?
Yes, if you were born on a day the Moon moved from Libra into Scorpio. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine.
