Libra Moon and Libra Moon Compatibility: Two Equinox Moons, Balanced Between New and Full

Libra Moon and Libra Moon compatibility puts both partners’ Moons in the sign of the autumn equinox. At the equinox, day and night are close to equal. Libra’s own symbol is a pair of scales. So it fits that two Libra Moons share a small real balance, one you can measure.

Most Moon signs lean toward new moon births or toward full moon births. Libra does not. Its new moon and full moon shares are almost exactly equal. Only one other Moon sign does the same: Aries, the sign of the spring equinox.

This page explains that balance, the shared ruler Venus, and how close two Moons in one sign really are. One thing first. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

The pair at a glance

Question Short answer.
Distance between the signs None, both Moons share one sign.
Element and mode Air, cardinal, for both partners.
Ruler Venus hosts both Moons.
Moon strength No major rank in Libra.
New and full moon births Almost equal, a trait Libra shares only with Aries.
How common is the pair? About 1 couple in 144, like any same-sign pair.
How close are the two Moons? Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples.

What a Moon sign shows

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you and how you care for the people you love.

Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. When both sit in the same sign, the distance is zero. Astrologers call that a conjunction by sign. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.

The equinox Moon keeps new and full in balance

A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.

For a Libra Moon, a new moon birth needs the Sun in Libra. A full moon birth needs the Sun in Aries, the sign across the zodiac. Here are the shares, measured over 800 years.

Moon sign New moon births, Sun in the same sign Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign.
Libra Moon 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries.
Aries Moon 8.21 percent, Sun in Aries 8.18 percent, Sun in Libra.
Cancer Moon 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer 7.92 percent, Sun in Capricorn.
Capricorn Moon 7.94 percent, Sun in Capricorn 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer.

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle. So the Sun seems to move fastest in early January and slowest in early July. It crosses Cancer in the most days, so Cancer Moons meet it most. It crosses Capricorn in the fewest days, so Capricorn Moons meet it least.

The equinoxes fall halfway between those two extremes. The Sun spends about 30.4 days in Libra and about 30.5 days in Aries. That is close to its average of 30.44 days per sign. So a Libra Moon has about as many days to meet the Sun as to face it. The new moon share and the full moon share come out even.

For this couple, both partners carry that balance. 15.71 percent of Libra Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. 15.73 percent include at least one full moon birth. Only three of the 78 pairs join two Moons that are each balanced in this way: Libra with Libra, Aries with Aries, and Aries with Libra.

Read as a symbol, the scales hold level. Neither partner is pulled toward the fresh start of a new moon or the peak of a full moon. The pair begins from the middle.

One host for both Moons: Venus

Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Venus rules Libra. So both partners hand their moods to the same planet. Venus stands for harmony, beauty, and the pull between two people.

A shared host is a shared language. Both Moons feel safe when the room is calm and the terms are fair. Both notice a harsh tone before anyone else does. Both want the other person to feel at ease, sometimes more than they want to be right.

The same host sets the shared risk. Two Moons ruled by Venus can keep the peace for so long that nothing gets said. Each one waits to see what the other wants. A small hurt goes unnamed, then another, until the calm is only on the surface.

For the sign on its own, see our page on the Moon in Libra. It shows why a noon chart misses that sign one time in nine.

A plain guest in the sign of the scales

Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, these are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio.

Libra is none of them. The Moon there has no major rank, so it is neither helped nor hurt by the sign. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, does give it a small rank, called a face, in the first ten degrees of Libra. That rank is minor.

So neither partner starts from a hard seat. Both Moons are guests in a friendly house. The work in this couple is not about strength. It is about speaking up.

Two cardinal air Moons

Each sign has an element and a mode. Libra’s element is air, the element of ideas, talk, and links between people. Its mode is cardinal. Cardinal signs start a season. Libra starts the northern autumn.

Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only one where both Moons are in a cardinal air sign. Aries with Aries is cardinal fire. Cancer with Cancer is cardinal water. Capricorn with Capricorn is cardinal earth.

The mix gives the pair its style. Air wants to talk a feeling through. Cardinal wants to act on it. Two Libra Moons like to open things: a plan, a trip, a new circle of friends. They find it harder to close a hard talk.

How close are two Moons in the same sign?

A conjunction by sign is not always a conjunction by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Libra and a Moon at 29 degrees of Libra share the sign. Yet they are 28 degrees apart. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.

Orb allowed Share of couples with a true conjunction.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 56 percent of couples.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Libra Moon couples have an exact conjunction. The rest share the sign but not the degree.

Ptolemy’s aspects, in Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. Two Moons in one sign are simply together. Ptolemy also names signs that “command and obey”. In the Loeb edition, the translator F. E. Robbins notes that Aries and Libra stand outside that scheme (note 80). So the classical link here is the shared sign and the shared host, nothing more.

What each partner brings

A Libra Moon calms down by restoring balance. It weighs both sides before it reacts. It shows love through kind words, good taste, and time spent together. When upset, it smooths things over first and feels the hurt later.

Two of them in one home make a gracious team. Guests feel welcome. Plans are fair to both. Arguments are rare and polite. The cost shows up in the small print. Who picks the restaurant? Who says that something hurt? When both partners defer, the choice waits.

  • Take turns deciding small things, with no appeal.
  • Name one real feeling a day, even a mild one.
  • Agree that a fair fight is kinder than a quiet grudge.
  • Keep a time each week for plain talk, with no need to please.

How common is a Libra Moon and Libra Moon couple?

The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. Any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.

Check your Moons before you read on

The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.

Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. A Libra Moon born early in the day could be a Virgo Moon. One born late could be a Scorpio Moon.

How we measured

We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.

Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. The Sun’s days per sign are averages over 1900 to 2100. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.

What the research says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.

So the level scales are not a promise, and the shared host is not a warning. They are symbols. Two Libra Moons both love fairness and grace. The symbols point to where that shared taste helps, and to where it needs one partner to speak first.

Frequently asked questions

Are two Libra Moons compatible?

Astrology reads them as a conjunction by sign, with Venus hosting both Moons. They share a taste for calm and fairness. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.

Why are new and full moon births balanced for Libra Moons?

The Sun spends about 30.4 days in Libra and about 30.5 days in Aries, close to its average. So a Libra Moon has about as many days to meet the Sun as to face it: 8.19 and 8.20 percent.

Is the Moon strong in Libra?

The Moon has no major rank in Libra. It is not at home, exalted, in exile, or in its fall there. Lilly gives it only a minor rank, a face, in the first ten degrees.

How common is a Libra Moon and Libra Moon couple?

About 1 random couple in 144. Every same-sign Moon pair has the same odds, because the Moon spends almost the same time in each sign.

Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?

On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
