Leo Moon and Pisces Moon Compatibility: The Sixth-and-Eighth Pair of the Sun and Jupiter

Leo Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility joins two signs that sit five signs apart. Leo is the one house of the Sun. Pisces is a house of Jupiter, the planet the old books called the greater benefic, which means the larger helper. So one Moon answers to the day’s light, and the other to its most generous planet.

Counted in the old way, the two signs sit sixth and eighth from each other. We also measured a small sky fact that tilts this couple toward new moon births. This page explains the old rules, the numbers, and how we got them.

The short version

Question Answer.
What link do the signs form? A quincunx, five signs or 150 degrees apart.
What did Ptolemy call it? Disjunct: signs that cannot see each other.
Elements and modes? Fire and water, fixed and mutable.
Who rules each sign? The Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Pisces.
Rank of each Moon? No rank in either sign.
What did we measure? The couple leans toward new moon births.

First, what astrology is not

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.

A census holds no birth times, so no one can run that test on Moon signs. Read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It is there to start a talk, not to grade your couple.

The Sun’s house and a house built for the Moon

Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he hands out the signs to the planets. He starts with the lights. The Sun gets Leo and the Moon gets Cancer, the two signs of high summer.

Then he cuts the zodiac in two. The half from Leo to Capricorn belongs to the Sun. The half from Aquarius to Cancer belongs to the Moon. Each of the five planets gets one sign in each half, one linked to the Sun and one to the Moon.

Jupiter’s pair is Sagittarius and Pisces. Ptolemy calls them windy and fecund, and says they are in trine to the lights. Sagittarius makes a trine with Leo, the Sun’s house. Pisces makes a trine with Cancer, the Moon’s house.

So this couple joins two signs from opposite halves. Leo is the Sun’s own house. Pisces is Jupiter’s house on the Moon’s side, placed in harmony with the Moon’s home. One Moon sits with the Sun. The other sits in a sign that was built to agree with the Moon.

Two Moons with no rank

Old astrology rates how well a planet works in each sign. The Moon owns Cancer and is honored in Taurus. It is in exile in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. Leo and Pisces are on none of these lists.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, used the word peregrine for a planet with no rank in its sign. It means a traveler with no house of its own in town. A peregrine Moon is not weak. It leans on the planet that owns the sign.

So the Leo Moon takes its cue from the Sun. Our guide to the Moon in Leo calls it a need for a witness. The Pisces Moon takes its cue from Jupiter, and from Neptune in modern charts. Our guide to the Moon in Pisces times every passage of the Moon through that sign.

The Sun and Jupiter share a trait in the old system. Both belong to the day team of planets, which the Greeks called the diurnal sect. So both Moons here answer to day planets, while the Moon itself leads the night team.

Signs with their backs turned

In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy names four links between signs: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. They need signs six, four, three or two apart. Five signs apart fits none of them. In chapter 16, he calls such signs disjunct, which means cut off.

He had two other bonds. Some signs command and others obey. Some signs see each other. These can be counted by exact degree, as mirror images, the way Lilly read them. They can also be counted by whole signs, as in the notes of the translator Frank Robbins.

By degree, Leo’s partners are Scorpio and Taurus. Pisces’s partners are Aries and Libra. By whole sign, Leo commands Sagittarius and sees Gemini. Pisces obeys Taurus and sees Scorpio. The two lists never meet, so Leo and Pisces have no old bond on either reading.

That puts this couple in a small club. By degree, 16 of the 78 sign pairs are fully disjunct. By whole sign, all 24 pairs one or five signs apart are. Leo and Pisces is on both lists.

Modern astrology gave the 150 degree angle its own name, the quincunx. It reads it as an angle that asks for constant adjustment. That is a newer idea, not Ptolemy’s. Both views are worth knowing, and neither one is a verdict.

Sixth and eighth

There is one more old way to count. In whole sign houses, you count signs from one to twelve. Counted from Pisces, Leo is the sixth sign. Counted from Leo, Pisces is the eighth.

Vettius Valens and other Greek authors saw the sixth and eighth places as hard ones. They do not aspect the rising sign, so they were called dark places. The sixth dealt with illness and toil, the eighth with death and inheritance.

Some astrologers read a Moon pair in this position as a bond that forms around care and crisis. One partner nurses, the other is nursed, and the roles can swap. It is an image to talk about, not a forecast.

Fire meets water

The element of a sign sets the tone of the Moon in it. Leo is fire: warm, bold and open. Pisces is water: soft, porous and deep.

The Leo Moon shows love out loud. Praise, gifts, a grand plan. It wants to be seen, and it wants its love to be seen.

The Pisces Moon shows love by merging. It picks up moods, forgives fast and gives without keeping score. It feels safe when it can let go of its own edges.

Here is where the two can miss each other. The Leo Moon’s big feelings can flood a room the Pisces Moon was already feeling for both. The Pisces Moon’s quiet drift can look like it has lost interest. Each partner is giving. The signals do not match.

Fixed and mutable

Leo is a fixed sign, one that holds on once it has chosen. Pisces is a mutable sign, one that bends and adapts. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only quincunx between fire and water that joins a fixed sign to a mutable one.

In practice, the Leo Moon keeps its line and its pride. The Pisces Moon keeps adjusting to the room. The Leo Moon can take that as a lack of backbone. The Pisces Moon can take the Leo Moon’s firmness as a wall.

What we measured: a lean toward the new moon

Here is the sky fact on this page. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. Each Moon sign has its own split.

Moon sign New moon type, Sun in the same sign Full moon type, Sun in the opposite sign.
Leo Moon 8.43 percent, with a Leo Sun 7.96 percent, with an Aquarius Sun.
Pisces Moon 8.07 percent, with a Pisces Sun 8.32 percent, with a Virgo Sun.

The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the northern summer. It spends more days in Leo and Virgo than in Aquarius and Pisces. More Sun days in Leo means more new moons in Leo. More Sun days in Virgo means more full moons in Pisces.

So both Moons favor a late summer Sun. A Leo Moon is likeliest with a Leo Sun. A Pisces Moon is likeliest with a Virgo Sun.

For the couple, the Leo lean is the stronger one. 15.82 percent of couples include at least one partner born with the Moon in their own Sun sign. 15.62 percent include at least one partner born near a full moon. The gap is small, but it holds on both routes we used.

In the old reading, a new moon birth joins the self and the needs in one sign. A Leo Sun with a Leo Moon wants to be seen, with no second voice. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.

Rare by Sun, ordinary by Moon

Through the Sun, the count is different. Our page on Leo and Pisces Sun sign compatibility uses US birth data to find how common that couple is.

The Moon does not favor any pair. It spends close to the same time in every sign, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. Any mixed Moon pair comes out at about 1 couple in 72. So a Leo and Pisces Moon couple is as common as any other mixed pair.

Venus reads the pair another way. Our page on Leo Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility sets an exalted Venus beside a Venus in the Sun’s sign.

How close are the two Moons in degrees?

An angle by sign is not always exact in degrees. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so plain geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.

Orb allowed Couples with a true 150 degree angle.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 56 percent of couples.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a trait of this one. Two edge cases matter here. An early Leo Moon and a late Pisces Moon can sit 120 degrees apart, a real trine. A late Leo Moon and an early Pisces Moon can sit 180 degrees apart, a real opposition. At an 8 degree orb, each case covers 3.56 percent of couples.

Check both Moons first

A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.

Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.

A Leo Moon born on a change day can turn out to be a Cancer or a Virgo Moon. A Pisces Moon can be an Aquarius or an Aries Moon. Any of those shifts changes the pair. The birth time settles it.

Three talks worth having

  • How loud is love? The Leo Moon likes it said and shown. The Pisces Moon likes it felt without words. Say which one you need, out loud.
  • Who takes care of whom? The Pisces Moon gives until it runs dry. The Leo Moon likes to rescue. Check that care flows both ways.
  • Where are the edges? The Leo Moon holds firm lines. The Pisces Moon blurs them. Agree on a few that stay put.

How we measured

We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points, and they give the same new moon and full moon shares.

The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 17, in the Robbins translation, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.

Frequently asked questions

Are a Leo Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as signs with no old bond, a bold fire Moon beside a soft water Moon. One shows love out loud, the other by merging. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple does, so use the reading as a lens.

Why are Leo and Pisces called disjunct?

Ptolemy’s four aspects need signs two, three, four or six apart. Five signs apart fits none of them, and the pair shares no other old link, by degree or by whole sign. So he said they cannot see each other.

What does sixth and eighth mean here?

In whole sign houses, Leo is the sixth sign from Pisces, and Pisces is the eighth from Leo. Greek authors called those places dark, since they do not see the rising sign.

Is the Moon weak in Leo or in Pisces?

No. The Moon has no rank in either sign, which tradition calls peregrine. It leans on the ruler of the sign, the Sun for Leo and Jupiter for Pisces.

Can I find my Moon sign from my birth date?

On 56 percent of days, yes, since the Moon stays in one sign all day. On the other days, you need a birth time. A noon guess is wrong in about 1 chart in 9.
