Most pages read Mercury in the 6th house as the mind of lists, checks and daily work. That reading has deep roots. But it skips the one plain fact that decides who gets this placement: the time of day.
Mercury in the 6th house means Mercury had just set in the west when you were born. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so the Sun had set too, or was about to. That makes this an evening placement. We counted it on US charts, hour by hour. Nine in ten of these births fall between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the clock.
Then we laid the real US birth hours on top, from the federal birth file for 2024. The total barely moves. The type of birth moves it a lot. A baby born by a planned C-section, with no labor first, gets Mercury in the 6th house far less often than a baby born after an induced labor. This guide gives the count, the method, and what the old and new books say.
Where the 6th house sits in the sky
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Astrologers cut that map into twelve slices called houses. Each house covers one part of life.
The 6th house covers daily work, habits, chores, coworkers and the upkeep of the body. The Greeks gave it a harsh name, Bad Fortune. Our guide to 6th house astrology, from Bad Fortune to daily habits tells how that name softened over time.
Now picture the sky as it turns. A point of the zodiac rises in the east. It climbs to the top of the sky, then sinks in the west. The spot where it sets is called the Descendant. It opens the 7th house, the last stretch above the ground.
The 6th house is the first slice below the ground on the west side. A planet in the 6th house has already set. In most US charts, it went down within the last two hours or so. Our guide to Mars in the 6th house uses the same rule for Mars. So does our guide to the Moon in the 6th house, which ties it to moonset.
Mercury never leaves the Sun’s side
Seen from Earth, Mercury never gets more than 28 degrees from the Sun. Our guide to Mercury in the 8th house measured the widest gap over 800 years. It came to 27.8 degrees.
The reason is simple. Mercury circles the Sun well inside our own orbit. From here, it swings out to one side of the Sun, then back to the other, but never far.
The whole sky turns once a day. So 28 degrees of sky pass by in a bit less than two hours. That is the most Mercury can lead or trail the Sun on the daily clock. It follows that Mercury in the 6th house puts the Sun close by, in the 5th, 6th or 7th house.
We checked. In our count, 99.3 percent of US charts with Mercury in the 6th house have the Sun in one of those three houses. The 7th house means the Sun was still up. The 6th and 5th mean it had set.
| Where the Sun is | Placidus houses | Whole sign houses. |
|---|---|---|
| 5th house, set a while ago | 21.1 percent | 21.6 percent. |
| 6th house, with Mercury | 52.0 percent | 50.7 percent. |
| 7th house, still up | 26.2 percent | 27.7 percent. |
| Any other house | 0.7 percent | none at all. |
These shares use real US birth hours. With an even clock, they barely move. So about half of all people with Mercury in the 6th house have the Sun there too.
The hour of the day that gives it
The table gives the share of US births in each clock hour that have Mercury in the 6th house. Clock time is the time on the birth record. It is the legal local time where the baby was born, with summer time when it applied.
| Born between | Placidus houses | Whole sign houses. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 a.m. and 2 p.m. | none at all | none at all. |
| 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. | under 0.1 percent | none at all. |
| 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. | 3.6 percent | 0.6 percent. |
| 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. | 14.4 percent | 4.6 percent. |
| 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. | 26.3 percent | 13.4 percent. |
| 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. | 35.2 percent | 24.1 percent. |
| 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. | 42.3 percent | 34.5 percent. |
| 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. | 36.8 percent | 40.8 percent. |
| 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. | 25.0 percent | 37.5 percent. |
| 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. | 14.9 percent | 25.8 percent. |
| 11 p.m. and midnight | 3.3 percent | 13.3 percent. |
| Midnight and 3 a.m. | under 0.1 percent | 1.6 percent. |
Read one row to see the scale. A US baby born between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. has better than two in five odds of Mercury in the 6th house under Placidus. A baby born at 10 a.m. has none. Of all the people with this placement, 90 percent were born between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the clock.
Clock time is not Sun time. Sun time puts noon where the Sun is highest. A time zone is wide, and summer time moves the clock one hour ahead. So in July in New York, the Sun sets near 8:30 p.m. on the clock. In December it sets near 4:30 p.m. Chart apps turn clock time into sky time for you.
So the hunch holds, with one catch. About one in four of these births comes before 6 p.m. Many of them are winter births, after an early sunset. Others come while the Sun is still up. The next section shows who those people are.
Evening star or morning star
Mercury can sit on either side of the Sun. When it sits east of the Sun, it sets after the Sun. You can catch it low in the west after dusk. Astrologers call it an evening star. When it sits west of the Sun, it sets before the Sun, in daylight. It rose before dawn, so it is a morning star. Mercury swaps roles about six times a year.
That split gives two kinds of Mercury in the 6th house. Here is a real case for each, in New York City, under Placidus houses. Times are New York clock time.
| Birth date | Kind of Mercury | Mercury in the 6th house | Sunset. |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 12, 2026 | Evening star, 25 degrees east of the Sun | 7:21 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. EDT | 6:19 p.m. EDT. |
| March 17, 2027 | Morning star, 28 degrees west of the Sun | 4:41 p.m. to 6:55 p.m. EDT | 7:03 p.m. EDT. |
Look at the second row. On that day, a baby born at 5 p.m. has Mercury in the 6th house while the Sun is still up. Mercury set in broad daylight, so no one could see it. The Sun sits in the 7th house. On the first day, the same window opens an hour after sunset. The Sun sits in the 6th or the 5th.
Our random draw of US charts gives the same split. An evening star Mercury in the 6th house never has the Sun in the 7th. The Sun has set: it is in the 6th about 56 percent of the time, and in the 5th the rest. A morning star Mercury in the 6th house has the Sun in the 7th about half the time. So “just set” does not always mean “after dark”. It means after Mercury went down.
Our guide to the Sun in the 6th house gives the clock times of the Sun’s own window after sunset, for New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, called Mercury a planet of both sides. He made it a day planet when it rises before the Sun, and a night planet when it sets after the Sun. So the old books would read these two kinds of Mercury in two ways. Your chart shows which one you have.
Do hospital hours change the odds?
If babies came at the same rate at every hour, Mercury would land in the 6th house in 8.41 percent of US charts under Placidus. That is a hair above one in twelve.
But US babies do not come at an even rate. The National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC, puts every US birth record in one public file each year. We used the CDC natality file 2024. It holds 3,638,436 births, and only 666 have no time of birth.
The busiest hour is 8 a.m., the hour of planned C-sections. The quiet stretch runs from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. The evening sits in between. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., each hour holds 3.7 to 4.7 percent of births, close to an even share. We weighted each chart by its real 2024 birth hour, with the month and the day of the week kept apart.
| Birth hours used | Placidus houses | Whole sign houses. |
|---|---|---|
| Even clock | 8.41 percent | 8.35 percent. |
| Real US hours, 2024 | 8.24 percent | 7.79 percent. |
| Real hours, weekdays only | 8.29 percent | 7.78 percent. |
| Real hours, weekends only | 8.05 percent | 7.83 percent. |
With real hours, the Placidus share dips from 8.41 to 8.24 percent. That is a small drop, about 2 percent. The evening is not a busy time, but it is not a dead one either. Whole sign houses drop more, to 7.79 percent, because their window runs later into the night.
The kind of Mercury matters more. With an even clock, an evening star and a morning star land in the 6th house at close to the same rate. With real hours, an evening star lands there in 7.83 percent of US births, and a morning star in 8.66 percent. The morning star wins by about 11 percent. For planned C-sections, the gap grows: 5.03 against 6.43 percent. The morning star’s window sits earlier, in the busier late afternoon. The evening star’s window runs later, into the quieter night.
One word of care. We used the 2024 birth hours for every year from 1940 to 2030. Planned births were far rarer in the 1960s. For older readers, the true share sits closer to the even clock value.
Winter babies get it more
The season matters too, and more than the hospital clock. Under Placidus, a house below the ground is one third of the time a point spends under the horizon on its way to the bottom of the sky. In December, the Sun and Mercury ride low and spend long nights under the ground. So their 6th house window is long, about two and a half hours in New York. In June, the nights are short, and the window shrinks to about an hour and a half.
| Birth month | Even clock, Placidus | Real US hours, Placidus. |
|---|---|---|
| January | 9.9 percent | 10.4 percent. |
| February | 9.4 percent | 9.7 percent. |
| March | 8.6 percent | 8.8 percent. |
| April | 7.8 percent | 7.5 percent. |
| May | 7.0 percent | 6.5 percent. |
| June | 6.7 percent | 6.0 percent. |
| July | 6.9 percent | 6.2 percent. |
| August | 7.5 percent | 7.0 percent. |
| September | 8.3 percent | 7.8 percent. |
| October | 9.1 percent | 8.8 percent. |
| November | 9.7 percent | 10.0 percent. |
| December | 10.0 percent | 10.5 percent. |
With an even clock, a December birth is 1.5 times as likely as a June birth to have Mercury in the 6th house. Real birth hours stretch the gap. In December, Mercury sets in the late afternoon or early evening, when births are still frequent. In June, it sets late at night, when the wards are quiet. So the real odds run from 6.0 percent in June to 10.5 percent in December.
Whole sign houses give a different curve, since they follow the signs, not the hours. With real hours, they run from 4.9 percent in August to 10.1 percent in January. The low point moves to late summer, but the winter lead holds.
Planned C-sections get it less often
This is the count we set out to make. The 2024 file says how each baby was born. So we split the births into four groups and ran the count for each.
| How the baby was born | Share of 2024 births | Mercury in the 6th, Placidus | Mercury in the 6th, whole sign. |
|---|---|---|---|
| C-section with no labor first | 23.0 percent | 5.7 percent | 5.1 percent. |
| Vaginal birth, labor not induced | 40.4 percent | 8.3 percent | 8.1 percent. |
| C-section after labor had started | 9.0 percent | 9.7 percent | 9.6 percent. |
| Vaginal birth after induced labor | 27.1 percent | 9.8 percent | 9.2 percent. |
A C-section with no labor first is a planned surgery in most cases. It is booked for the morning, and its peak hour is 8 a.m. By the evening, the list is done. So only 5.7 percent of these babies get Mercury in the 6th house. That is fewer than one in seventeen.
Induced labor works the other way. Labor is started on purpose with drugs, and those births pile up from noon to the evening. So 9.8 percent of them get Mercury in the 6th house, about one in ten. The odds are 1.7 times those of a planned C-section.
The same pattern shows up next door. Our guide to Mars in the 6th house found the same order for Mars, with C-section babies lowest and induced births highest. Mercury shows it more sharply, because Mercury is tied to the Sun and so to the evening.
Two house systems, two answers
You have seen two columns in the tables. Here is why. Whole sign houses make each house one full sign, counted from the sign rising at your birth. Placidus houses cut the sky by time. Each house holds the part of the sky that passes by in a set share of the day.
Whole sign is the oldest method on record. Vettius Valens used it in the 2nd century. Placidus came in the 1600s, and most US chart apps use it by default.
The two agree on the story. Both put Mercury in the 6th in the evening. They part ways at the edges. Placidus opens the door around 3 p.m. and shuts it near midnight. Whole sign opens it later and keeps it open until 1 a.m. or a bit past. Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., the odds are 15 percent under Placidus and 26 percent under whole sign houses. If one app shows Mercury in your 6th house and another shows it in your 5th or 7th, neither app is broken. They use two rules.
What the old books say
The Greek writers called the 6th house Kakē Tychē, which means Bad Fortune. Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies, gave it illness, injury, slaves and hard labor. It is a falling house. A planet there has just passed an angle, here the western horizon, and is falling away from it.
The Greeks gave each planet one house where it was glad to be. They called it the planet’s joy. The list comes from Firmicus Maternus and Paulus of Alexandria. Mercury rejoices in the 1st house, the house of the self. Mars rejoices in the 6th. So Mercury in the 6th house is a guest in the room of Mars, as our Mars guide explains.
The two rooms mirror each other. The 1st house sits just below the eastern horizon, where planets are about to rise. The 6th house sits just below the western horizon, where they have just set. In the Greek scheme, the 6th house cannot see the 1st. The angle between them, 150 degrees, was not one they counted as a line of sight. So in the 6th house, Mercury works out of view of its own joy.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, gave the 6th house servants, sickness and small cattle. He called it unfortunate. He gave Mercury the clerks, the scribes, the schoolmasters and the merchants. Put his two lists side by side. Mercury in the 6th becomes the clerk of daily work: the one who keeps the rota, the stock list and the day book.
These are judgments from a symbolic craft, not measured facts. They are not health advice. A chart cannot find or forecast illness. Any worry about your body belongs with a doctor.
What modern writers add
Modern astrology turned the 6th house from misfortune into daily work, routine and service. That shift came in the last century, with the psychological school.
Stephen Arroyo reads Mercury as the way we take in and pass on facts. In the 6th, those facts are about tasks, tools and methods. Robert Hand reads a house as a field of life where a planet acts. Here, the mind acts through the job in front of it. Liz Greene, a Jungian analyst as well as an astrologer, brought the inner life into the reading of every house.
Demetra George and Chris Brennan have done the most to bring the Greek sources back into English. Their work shows that the older reading was harder. It dealt with toil and service, not with self-care. A good reading today keeps both in view.
What it looks like in a life
This is where the count stops and the reading starts. We give it as the tradition gives it, not as a forecast.
The mind likes a method. Lists, steps, checklists and good tools feel like calm. A task with no plan feels like noise.
Work is where the talk happens. This Mercury speaks best about the job at hand. It is the coworker who writes the how-to guide, fixes the form and spots the typo.
Small things get noticed. A wrong number, a missed step, a loose thread in a plan. That eye for detail is a real skill at work.
The risk is to check and check again. A mind built for fixing can find something to fix in everything. The work is to know when a task is done.
Next door: the 5th and the 7th house
A shift of an hour or two can move Mercury one room over. So it helps to know the rooms on each side.
A bit earlier in the evening, Mercury had not yet set. Next along the wheel sits Mercury in the seventh house, where partners replace the chores of this room.
Later in the night, Mercury sinks deeper under the ground, into the 5th house, the room of play and children. Further down still, Mercury in the 4th house runs the same habit of speech through home, family and where you come from.
For the afternoon side of the chart, our guide to Mercury in the 8th house runs the same count on the other side of the Descendant.
Is your Mercury in the 6th? A quick check
You can rule it out in ten seconds. Look at your birth time on the clock.
Born between 3 a.m. and 2 p.m., in the US? Then Mercury is not in your 6th house, under either system.
Born between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.? The odds run from one in four to more than two in five. It is worth a look. Born between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.? Check both house systems, since this is where they part ways.
Then look at the sky of that day. If Mercury was a morning star, its window sits earlier, near sunset. If it was an evening star, the window opens after dark. For a real answer, you need your birth time to the minute, your birth town, and the house system your app uses.
How we measured it
A number you cannot repeat is worth nothing. So here is the full method.
Route one, a grid. Dates: every third day from January 1, 1940 to December 31, 2030. Hours: every ten minutes of local clock time. Places: the 40 largest US metro areas, from New York to Milwaukee, weighted by their 2020 census count. Each clock time was turned into world time with the real time zone rules of that city and year, with war time and summer time included. This is the same grid our Mercury in the 8th house guide used, read here for the 6th house.
The Sun and Mercury came from the Swiss Ephemeris, a standard set of planet tables used by chart apps. We used our own code for Placidus and whole sign houses. We checked it against the Swiss Ephemeris house routine on 3,000 random US charts. It gave the same house for Mercury every time, and its house lines sat within 0.01 degree. The zodiac is the tropical one used in the US.
Route two, a second grid. Every eleventh day over the same years, with its own start date. It also noted which side of the Sun Mercury was on. It gave 8.41 percent on an even clock and 8.24 percent with real hours under Placidus, and 7.78 percent under whole sign houses. That matches route one to within 0.01 point. The evening star and morning star figures come from this grid.
Route three, a random draw. We cast 300,000 charts with real birth hours and 200,000 with an even clock, all with the Swiss Ephemeris house routine itself. We used a known random number tool with a fixed seed. Places came from 301 US population centers, weighted by head count. It gave 8.45 percent on an even clock and 8.34 percent with real hours under Placidus, and 7.84 percent under whole sign houses. The gaps from the grids, about 0.1 point, come from the margin of the draw and its wider set of places. It gave 7.90 percent for an evening star and 8.79 percent for a morning star, the same gap as the grid. The Sun houses for each kind of Mercury come from this draw.
Birth hours and birth types come from the CDC natality file 2024. We kept the month, the day of the week and the ten minute slot of each birth apart. The New York windows come from a scan at one minute steps.
Questions people ask
How common is Mercury in the 6th house?
On an even clock, 8.41 percent of US charts under Placidus, a hair above one in twelve. With real US birth hours from 2024, it comes to 8.24 percent under Placidus and 7.79 percent under whole sign houses.
What time of day gives Mercury in the 6th house?
The evening. Under Placidus, 90 percent of these births fall between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the clock, and none between 3 a.m. and 2 p.m. The odds peak between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., at 42 percent of the births in that hour.
If Mercury is in my 6th house, where is my Sun?
In the 6th house too, about half the time: 52 percent under Placidus. Otherwise it sits one room away, in the 7th house (26 percent) or the 5th (21 percent). Almost never anywhere else.
Are C-section babies less likely to have Mercury in the 6th house?
Planned ones are. With no labor first, only 5.7 percent get it under Placidus, since those births cluster around 8 a.m. After an induced labor, the figure is 9.8 percent.
Does Mercury in the 6th house mean poor health?
No. The old books tied the 6th house to illness as a symbol. Astrology is not a medical tool. A placement is not a diagnosis or a forecast. Questions about your health are for a doctor.
Why does my app put Mercury in a different house?
The app uses another house system, or your birth time sits near the edge. Placidus and whole sign houses part ways most in the late evening. Check which system each app uses.
Your own chart, read properly
Everything above is general. Your chart is not. Your Mercury sits in one sign, in one house, at one angle to your Sun, and the reading changes with each.
Astrovision builds that reading from your birth date, hour and town. It comes as a written guide and a personal podcast. Same chart, two formats, and every term explained.
