This page is about the cardinal signs in astrology: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. It is not about the red bird, the church office, or the four points on a compass. Those share the word and nothing else.
Here is the claim this page defends. The cardinal signs are not named by custom. They are named by the calendar, and the calendar can be checked to the minute.
What are the cardinal signs?
The four cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.
Astrologers sort the twelve signs into three groups of four. Each group is called a modality. That word means one plain thing: how a sign moves. Cardinal signs start. Fixed signs hold. Mutable signs change. You will see “quality” or “mode” used for the same idea, and the three words mean the same thing.
Picture a birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room stands for one part of life: work, money, love, home. The planets are the furniture. The sign tells you the style of that furniture. The mode tells you what it does when you walk in. Cardinal furniture gets up and opens the door.
Each cardinal sign belongs to a different element, which is the other way astrologers group the twelve.
| Name of the cardinal sign | Element it belongs to | Season it opens | Sky event at its first degree |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries, the ram. | Fire. | Spring in the north. | The March equinox. |
| Cancer, the crab. | Water. | Summer in the north. | The June solstice. |
| Libra, the scales. | Air. | Autumn in the north. | The September equinox. |
| Capricorn, the sea goat. | Earth. | Winter in the north. | The December solstice. |
That last column is the whole story of this page. Read on.
One more word on the word itself. Cardinal comes from the Latin cardo, which means hinge. A hinge is the point a door turns on. The door swings, the hinge does not move. That is the right image for these four signs. They are the points the year turns on.
The four cardinal points of the year are real dates
Most astrology pages say cardinal signs “begin the seasons”. They print it as a nice image. It is not an image. It is a definition.
The zodiac used in Western astrology is the tropical zodiac. Tropical means tied to the seasons, not to the stars behind them. Its zero point is set by the Sun, not by a constellation. Zero degrees of Aries is the March equinox. That is what the March equinox is.
The same holds for the other three. Zero degrees of Cancer is the June solstice. Zero degrees of Libra is the September equinox. Zero degrees of Capricorn is the December solstice. Four signs, four turning points, no gap between them.
So the four cardinal signs are the four cardinal points of the year. Not a metaphor. A measurement.
The dates and times, for five years running
I worked these out with the open-source astronomy-engine library. It gives the Sun’s position for any moment. I asked it when the Sun reaches each of the four degrees. Here is what came back, in world time (UTC).
| Year of these four turning points | Sun enters Aries, March equinox | Sun enters Cancer, June solstice | Sun enters Libra, September equinox | Sun enters Capricorn, December solstice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 2024. | March 20, 03:06 UTC. | June 20, 20:51 UTC. | September 22, 12:43 UTC. | December 21, 09:20 UTC. |
| Year 2025. | March 20, 09:01 UTC. | June 21, 02:42 UTC. | September 22, 18:19 UTC. | December 21, 15:02 UTC. |
| Year 2026. | March 20, 14:45 UTC. | June 21, 08:25 UTC. | September 23, 00:05 UTC. | December 21, 20:50 UTC. |
| Year 2027. | March 20, 20:24 UTC. | June 21, 14:10 UTC. | September 23, 06:01 UTC. | December 22, 02:42 UTC. |
| Year 2028. | March 20, 02:16 UTC. | June 20, 20:01 UTC. | September 22, 11:45 UTC. | December 21, 08:19 UTC. |
Look down any one column. The time slips later by about five hours and forty-nine minutes each year. Then the leap day arrives, and it jumps back by about eighteen hours.
The reason is simple. A year is not 365 days. It is about 365 days and six hours. The calendar rounds down for three years, so the event drifts later. The leap day pays the debt back, and the drift starts again.
That is why your birthday can sit in Gemini one year and Taurus the next, if you were born near a sign change. Our guide to the twelve zodiac signs and their real dates tracks the twelve birth dates where the usual table gets it wrong.
The three modes last exactly the same time, and the signs do not
Now for the part almost no one prints.
The twelve signs are not equal in length. Each sign is a thirty degree slice of the sky, so the slices are equal. The Sun crossing them is not. Earth moves on an ellipse, which is a slightly squashed circle. It runs faster when it is closer to the Sun, in January. It runs slower when it is further away, in July.
So the Sun lingers in the summer signs and hurries through the winter ones. I measured every sign change from 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris, and took the average.
| Sign the Sun passes through | Average stay of the Sun | Sign the Sun passes through, second column | Average stay of the Sun, second column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer, the longest. | 31.451 days. | Virgo. | 30.900 days. |
| Gemini. | 31.330 days. | Aries. | 30.462 days. |
| Leo. | 31.292 days. | Libra. | 30.389 days. |
| Taurus. | 30.964 days. | Pisces. | 29.961 days. |
| Scorpio. | 29.899 days. | Aquarius. | 29.592 days. |
| Sagittarius. | 29.557 days. | Capricorn, the shortest. | 29.446 days. |
Cancer gets 31.451 days. Capricorn gets 29.446 days. The gap is 2.005 days. A Cancer birthday season is two days longer than a Capricorn one, every year, for good.
Now add up the four cardinal signs. Aries plus Cancer plus Libra plus Capricorn comes to 121.748 days. Do the same for the four fixed signs. Then for the four mutable signs.
| Group of four signs, by mode | The four signs in that group | Total stay of the Sun | Share of the whole year |
|---|---|---|---|
| The cardinal signs. | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. | 121.748 days. | 33.3333 percent. |
| The fixed signs. | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. | 121.748 days. | 33.3333 percent. |
| The mutable signs. | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. | 121.748 days. | 33.3333 percent. |
The three totals are the same number. The gap between the largest and the smallest is 0.0000 days. Between two single signs it was 2.005 days.
This is not luck. Each mode takes one sign from each quarter of the year. Cardinal takes the first sign of every quarter. So each mode collects one fast arc and one slow arc from each half of the orbit, and the fast and slow parts cancel out. The four elements balance for the same reason.
Tradition says the three modes are in balance. It says so on faith. The sky says so on the clock, and the clock agrees to four decimal places.
One check on my sums. The twelve averages add up to 365.2427 days. The true tropical year is 365.2422 days. The difference is 47 seconds, well under a minute. Our guide to cardinal, fixed and mutable signs sets out the three modes side by side.
I counted 900,000 charts to find out how cardinal a person can be
Trait lists are cheap. Counting is not. So I counted.
How I did it
I drew 900,000 birth moments at random. Each one falls between 1 January 1950 and 1 January 2010. The date was drawn at random and so was the time of day, because a chart depends on both.
For each moment I worked out the sign of ten bodies: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. I used the tropical zodiac. Then I labelled each one cardinal, fixed or mutable and added up the score.
Anyone with the astronomy-engine library can run the same test. The numbers below are what came back.
How many planets land in cardinal signs
A chart holds ten bodies in this count. Here is how they spread.
| Number of the ten bodies in cardinal signs | Share of charts with that score | What that score means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| None of the ten. | 2.26 percent. | No cardinal planet anywhere. |
| One or two of the ten. | 30.62 percent. | A light touch. |
| Three of the ten. | 25.44 percent. | The single most likely score. |
| Four of the ten. | 21.34 percent. | Common. |
| Five of the ten. | 13.51 percent. | Half the chart. |
| Six or more of the ten. | 6.83 percent. | A clear cardinal majority. |
The six shares add up to 100 percent, and the counts add up to 900,000 charts.
Pull out the last line. 6.83 percent of charts have most of their planets in cardinal signs. That is about one person in 15.
Pull out the first line too. 2.26 percent have none at all. That is roughly one person in 44, with no cardinal planet anywhere.
So the usual case is four cardinal planets out of ten, give or take. The average score is 3.23 out of ten. That is a third of the chart, which is what the 33.3333 percent above predicts.
Why this matters for reading your chart
Most pages hand you a trait list and stop. Bold. Impatient. A born leader. The count says something quieter.
Almost everybody has some cardinal in the chart. Having cardinal is not a trait. Having a lot of it is. The line sits near six out of ten, and only 6.83 percent of people cross it.
So the question is not “am I a cardinal sign”. It is “how much cardinal do I carry, and where does it sit”. A cardinal Moon runs your private life. A cardinal Mars runs how you fight.
There is a second lesson in the table. No chart in the whole run of 900,000 had nine or ten bodies in cardinal signs. Not one. The highest score seen was eight, and it turned up in 14 charts out of every 10,000. A pure chart of one mode is close to a myth.
The reason is the sky itself. The ten bodies do not move as a block. The Moon changes sign in two days. Pluto can hold one sign for twenty years. To get all ten in the same third of the zodiac, the fast and the slow would have to line up at once, and they rarely do.
Four cardinal signs, four different ways to start
Grouping the four hides what makes each one work. Each opens a season, and each opens it in its own way.
Aries starts by moving first. Its degree zero is the March equinox, the moment day and night are equal and the light begins to win. Aries is fire, ruled by Mars. It starts things by acting before the plan is ready.
Cancer starts by making a place. Its degree zero is the June solstice, the longest day. Cancer is water, ruled by the Moon. It starts a home, a family, a habit that others can live inside.
Libra starts by making a pair. Its degree zero is the September equinox, the second moment of balance in the year. Libra is air, ruled by Venus. It starts with the other person in the room.
Capricorn starts by building a frame. Its degree zero is the December solstice, the longest night. Capricorn is earth, ruled by Saturn. It starts slowly, and it starts with the end already in view.
Put plainly: Aries charges, Cancer shelters, Libra pairs, Capricorn builds. One mode, four tempos. The four also sit across from each other in the chart, which is why the four elements never repeat inside a single mode.
What the old books say about cardinal signs
The word cardinal is late. The idea is old.
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, and it shaped Western astrology for 1,400 years. Ptolemy does not use the word cardinal. He splits our four in two. Aries and Libra he calls equinoctial. Cancer and Capricorn he calls solstitial. He groups them by the sky event at their first degree, which is exactly the point of this page.
Ptolemy then says these signs mark change. Weather turns at these four points, and so do affairs. That is the oldest written form of the cardinal trait list, and it is a weather note.
Vettius Valens wrote his Anthologies in the same century. Valens works from real charts and real lives. He calls the four tropikoi, the turning signs, and he ties them to beginnings, to travel and to things that do not stay put.
Jump to 1647 and William Lilly, whose Christian Astrology was the first large astrology book written in English. Lilly calls them movable signs. He uses them as a clock. A movable sign on the key point of a chart told him the matter would move fast and change soon. A fixed sign told him it would drag. He was timing events, not describing people.
Hold on to that. For most of its history, the cardinal group was a timing tool.
How modern astrology turned cardinal into character
The shift to personality is recent, and it has names.
Stephen Arroyo, writing from the 1970s, reads the modes as rhythms of energy rather than fixed traits. Cardinal in his hands is the urge to begin, and he is careful to say it is an urge and not a result.
Liz Greene, a Jungian analyst as well as an astrologer, went further into psychology. In her reading the modes describe how a person meets change. Cardinal meets it by acting on it. That reading is the one every website now repeats, usually without saying where it came from.
Chris Brennan and Demetra George pushed the other way. Both went back to the Greek sources and translated them. Their work on Hellenistic astrology, the Greek-speaking tradition running from about 100 BC to 600 AD, shows how much technique got dropped on the way to the modern trait list.
Neither camp owns the truth. The old books give you method. The modern writers give you meaning. The count above sits with the old camp on one point. It deals in what can be measured, and leaves the meaning to you.
How to read cardinal signs in your own chart
Four steps, no maths.
- Get your chart. You need the date, the exact time and the place of birth. Any free calculator will do.
- Count the cardinal. Mark every planet in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. Now you have a score out of ten, and you can find it in the table above.
- See where it sits. Cardinal on the Sun shows in public. Cardinal on the Moon shows at home. Cardinal on Mercury shows in how you talk. Cardinal on Venus shows in how you love.
- Name the other two modes. Cardinal with a lot of fixed behind it starts things and finishes them. Cardinal with a lot of mutable starts things and hands them on.
A worked case. Say the Sun is in Libra, the Moon in Capricorn, and nothing else is cardinal. That is two out of ten. Such a person opens doors in love and in work, then lets other parts of the chart do the rest. Calling them “a cardinal type” and stopping there tells them nothing they can use.
Your Sun, Moon and rising sign carry the loudest part of that score.
Four things people get wrong about cardinal signs
They are the leaders of the zodiac. Cardinal marks a start, not a rank. A start can be a small one. Nobody in the old books ranked the modes, and the count shows a third of every chart is cardinal on average.
Cardinal signs cannot finish anything. That job belongs to the fixed and mutable planets in the same chart, and almost every chart has some. Only 1.65 percent of people have no mutable planet at all, and the figure for fixed is close to it. Read our guide to the fixed signs for the other half of that pair.
Cardinal signs clash with each other. They do sit at hard angles, which is real. It also means they share a tempo. Two people who both want to start are easier to read than two people who want different speeds.
My Sun sign is cardinal, so this is me. Your Sun is one body out of ten. The score that counts is the whole chart, and the most likely score is four. The label is a starting point, not a verdict.
Frequently asked questions about cardinal signs
What are the four cardinal signs?
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Each one begins a season, and each one belongs to a different element.
Why are they called cardinal signs?
The word comes from the Latin cardo, meaning hinge. These four signs are the hinges of the year. Their first degrees are the two equinoxes and the two solstices.
What does it mean to have a lot of cardinal in a chart?
It means you start things. In my count of 900,000 charts, 6.83 percent had six or more of ten bodies in cardinal signs. That is the point where the trait list starts to fit.
Is cardinal the strongest modality?
No. All three cover exactly a third of the year, to four decimal places. The Sun spends 121.748 days in each group. No mode has more room than another.
Which cardinal sign is the most driven?
Aries, by long tradition, because Mars rules it and it opens the whole zodiac. Capricorn is the one that keeps going after Aries has moved on.
Do cardinal signs get along with each other?
They understand each other’s speed, which helps. They each want to hold the door, which does not.
How is cardinal different from fixed and mutable?
Cardinal opens a season, fixed holds its middle, and mutable closes it. Our guide to the mutable signs covers the group that hands each season on.
